SPOILER ALERT!!! AS WITH ALL SPECIAL EDITIONS WE DISCUSS ANYTHING AND EVERYTHINGOsgood Perkins is one of the best horror directors going today. He has an eye for horror and knows how to deliver scares and an engaging story. Keeper is no different as its character driven plot builds to some of the best jump scares of the year. The mood will draw you in and the setting is perfect for its tale.Which is not to say that the storytelling is not without its problems. The pacing may be an issue for some as it takes a while for the plot to actually develop. It is not a long movie, but the first third of Keeper is a little too methodical. But it is the ending that is a bigger issue. The exposition dumps and vagueness will definitely turn some off.One thing that we had no problem with was the performance of Tatiana Maslany. She has done some amazing work in genre cinema and is the heartbeat of Keeper. So much so that if the same story is told without her, it would be nowhere near as good. The movie does a lot right, but she is the highlight. The end result is a whole lot of good with some very noticeable bad. What does that mean for the entire film? We talk about the direction of Perkins, its patient and frustrating storytelling, the acting of the small cast, the over the top ending, and more as we try to make sense of Keeper. [School of Everything Else] This one took a lot of consideration. We wanted to separate ourselves from the ragebait YouTubers who decided before it was even out that this was the worst TV show ever made. Even the thumbnail had to be put together in a way that conveys there are problems, but it's not because of BIG ANGRY WOMAN! (Seriously, what is it with basic dudes seeking attention and thumbnails of ladies mid-shout?) We liked a lot about this long-awaited debut of the onscreen adaptation of John Byrne's reimagined fourth-wall-breaking sassy jade giantess. And the casting for starters was excellent, as was Tatiana Maslany's firecracker chemistry with Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock. However, there are some deep-seated issues that go way beyond being so meta that you spend the climax of what would turn out to be your only season making multiple gags about how disappointing it is. Director Osgood Perkins is back after last year's sleeper hit Longlegs (2024)! This time he's adapting a 1980 short story by Stephen King called "The Monkey" featuring a cursed monkey toy. Theo James and Theo James star as twin brothers who face random horrific deaths due to the monkey toy. The movie also stars Tatiana Maslany, Christian Convery, Colin O'Brien, Rohan Campbell, Sarah Levy, Adam Scott, and Elijah Wood. It got decent enough reviews and good box office. One of the greatest treats of Collider Ladies Night is getting to welcome a longtime favorite to show. That happened this time around with Tatiana Maslany, who currently has The Monkey playing in theaters nationwide. One of my earliest experiences doing week-to-week series coverage was Orphan Black. Not only did I absolutely adore the show and frequently marvel at Maslany's work in it, but given my investment, it heavily defined some of the earlier years of my career, paving the way to consistent work, work that I was excited to do and quite proud of. While I have crossed paths with Maslany a number of times since for short-form conversations, I was itching to get the opportunity to sit down for a longer chat, and now, thanks to a downright wild Stephen King adaptation from Osgood Perkins, that time has finally come.Maslany plays Lois in The Monkey, mother to twins Hal and Bill, both played brilliantly by Christian Convery. Lois' husband (Adam Scott) thought a drum-playing monkey would be a great gift to bring home to his boys - until he discovers its tendency to kill victims in especially outrageous and horrific ways. He disappears, leaving Lois a single mother. The trio forge forward well enough until Hal and Bill unearth their father's monkey.With The Monkey currently in theaters, Maslany joined me for a Ladies Night chat to discuss her experience working with Perkins on not one, but two feature films - The Monkey and also Keeper, which was filmed before The Monkey and is due in theaters via Neon later this year.
