Chiến dịch Swachh Bharat do Thủ tướng Narendra Modi phát động năm 2014 đặt mục tiêu chấm dứt tình trạng đại tiện ngoài trời tại Ấn Độ. Với hơn 110 triệu nhà vệ sinh được xây dựng và tuyên bố “không còn tình trạng đại tiện ngoài trời” vào năm 2019, liệu chương trình này có thực sự thành công? Những rào cản về văn hóa, tôn giáo và bất cập trong bảo trì đang đặt ra câu hỏi lớn về tính bền vững của chiến dịch này. Để nói về vấn đề đi vệ sinh ngoài trời ở Ấn Độ, nhiều chuyên gia nghiên cứu về vệ sinh trích lại câu nói của Ganhdi : “Vệ sinh còn quan trọng hơn cả độc lập”. Từ nhiều thế kỷ qua, Ấn Độ được coi là một trong những quốc gia mà tỷ lệ người dân đi vệ sinh ngoài trời cao nhất thế giới. Vào năm 2014, khoảng 40 % dân số Ấn Độ đi vệ sinh ở ngoài trời, tương đương với hơn nửa tỷ người. Thời điểm đó, nhiều ngôi nhà, trường học hay các hạ tầng được xây dựng mà không có nhà vệ sinh. Tình trạng này chủ yếu xảy ra tại các khu vực nông thôn (65%). Điều này không chỉ ảnh hưởng đến sức khỏe cộng đồng, làm gia tăng các bệnh truyền nhiễm như tiêu chảy, tả, và viêm gan A, mà còn gây tổn thất kinh tế lớn, được ước tính lên tới 6% GDP của Ấn Độ (World Bank, 2014). Hệ thống vệ sinh kém còn làm trầm trọng hơn tình trạng bất bình đẳng giới, khi nhiều khu vực có nhà vệ sinh chỉ dành riêng cho nam giới, khiến phụ nữ và trẻ em gái phải đối mặt với nguy cơ bị quấy rối hoặc tấn công khi đi vệ sinh ngoài trời vào ban đêm. Để giải quyết tình trạng này, thủ tướng Ấn Độ Narendra Modi đã phát động chiến dịch đầy tham vọng Swachh Bharat (Ấn Độ sạch) vào năm 2014, để cải thiện vệ sinh và xóa bỏ tình trạng đại tiện ngoài trời tại Ấn Độ trong vòng 5 năm. Chương trình đã thúc đẩy việc xây dựng và sử dụng lâu dài cho tất cả các thành viên trong hộ gia đình, cũng như khởi xướng các dự án Quản lý chất thải rắn và lỏng (SLWM) tại nhiều ngôi làng của đất nước. Chương trình cũng tập trung vào can thiệp thay đổi hành vi, nhận thức của người dân có tính đến văn hóa, tập quán, và nhu cầu của địa phương. Trong tuyên bố ngày 2 tháng 10 năm 2019, nhân kỷ niệm 150 năm ngày sinh của Gandhi, thủ tướng Ấn Độ Modi khẳng định không còn tình trạng đại tiện ngoài trời (ODF). « Trong 60 tháng, 600 triệu người đã được tiếp cận nhà vệ sinh, hơn 110 triệu nhà vệ sinh đã được xây dựng. » Theo Bộ Nước và Vệ sinh Ấn Độ (Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, 2019), trong 5 năm, 600 triệu người được tiếp cận nhà vệ sinh. Toàn bộ 36 bang và vùng lãnh thổ của Ấn Độ tuyên bố “không còn tình trạng đại tiện ngoài trời” (ODF – Open Defecation Free) vào năm 2019. Tỷ lệ tiếp cận nhà vệ sinh tăng từ 38% (2014) lên hơn 98% (2019). Tỷ lệ mắc bệnh liên quan đến vệ sinh, đặc biệt là tiêu chảy và bệnh đường ruột cũng giảm đáng kể. Những nhà vệ sinh được xây dựng có thực sự được sử dụng ?  Tuy nhiên, nhiều chuyên gia đặt câu hỏi về tính bền vững và hiệu quả thực tế của những con số này. Một số nghiên cứu chỉ ra rằng một bộ phận người dân vẫn tiếp tục đại tiện ngoài trời ngay cả khi khu vực của họ đã được công nhận là ODF. Nhà nghiên cứu về Ấn Độ Catherine Bros, giảng viên tại đại học Tours trả lời France Culture, cho biết :    Tác động của chương trình mà chính phủ Ấn Độ đưa ra, thường được đánh giá không lâu sau khi các nhà vệ sinh được xây dựng, và vội vàng đưa ra kết luận rằng chương trình này đã thành công. Nhưng trên thực tế, khi quay trở lại nghiệm thu nhiều năm sau đó, người ta có thể thấy rằng vấn đề đối với các nhà vệ sinh được xây dựng đó là bảo trì. Khi chính quyền hoan nghênh việc đã xây dựng được nhiều nhà vệ sinh, cấp nước cho nhiều ngôi làng, nhưng 7, 8 năm sau, khi quay trở lại, những nhà vệ sinh đó đã bị bỏ hoang, không ai dọn dẹp, đường ống thì vỡ hỏng, tắc nghẽn… Đó chính là mặt khuất của chương trình này ». Tại sao những nhà vệ sinh lại không được sử dụng hay bảo trì ? Vấn đề này còn nhiều nguyên nhân sâu sa. Theo nghiên cứu của Diane Coffey, nhà nhân khẩu học tại đại học Texas, chuyên nghiên cứu về tình trạng vệ sinh ở Ấn Độ, nguyên do đầu tiên là yếu tố văn hoá. Tại nhiều khu vực nông thôn ở Ấn Độ, phân được coi là nguồn gây ô nhiễm chính. Đạo Hin Đu được nhiều người Ấn tin theo, đưa ra những khái niệm về sự thanh tịnh (shuddhata) và sự ô uế (ashuddhata). Việc để phân gần nhà, thậm chí ngay cả trong bể phốt, cũng bị coi là làm ô uế không gian sinh hoạt. Tín ngưỡng này khiến nhiều người muốn đi đại tiện ở ngoài trời, xa nhà, để giữ môi trường xung quanh trong sạch, thanh tịnh. Trong các ngôi nhà tại Ấn Độ thường có khu vực thờ cúng cho tổ tiên và các vị thần. Việc có nhà vệ sinh ở gần được coi là hành động báng bổ, thiếu tôn trọng thần linh. Hệ thống phân cấp bậc xã hội vẫn nặng nề trong xã hội Ấn Tại Ấn Độ, xã hội vẫn bị chia rẽ, phân cấp, dựa trên xuất thân và nghề nghiệp. Yếu tố này cũng có vai trò quan trọng trong nhận thức về vệ sinh và chăm sóc sức khỏe. Cụ thể, xã hội Ấn Độ được chia làm bốn đẳng cấp (Varnas) : Brahmanes - Các thầy tu, trí thức, người dạy học; Kshatriyas - Các chiến binh, nhà lãnh đạo; Vaishyas - Các thương nhân, thợ thủ công; Shudras - Những người lao động, phục vụ. Ngoài 4 nhóm này, là các Dalit (tiện dân), còn được gọi là những “Không thể chạm vào”, được giao những công việc bị coi là “ô uế”, bao gồm công việc dọn dẹp nhà vệ sinh và xử lý chất thải con người. Mặc dù Hiến Pháp Ấn Độ năm 1950, đã huỷ bỏ việc phân tầng giai cấp, nhưng những người Dalit, vẫn tiếp tục bị phân biệt đối xử, coi là những người dưới đáy xã hội. Trong tâm thức của nhiều người Ấn, việc lắp đặt nhà vệ sinh ở trong nhà có nghĩa là cần phải dọn dẹp, và công việc này bị coi là việc hạ đi phẩm giá của những người thuộc tầng lớp cao hơn. Nhiều người từ chối sử dụng nhà vệ sinh, để tránh bị gắn với hình ảnh người Dalit và những người dọn dẹp vệ sinh. Các nhà nghiên cứu cũng nêu ra những thói quen đã hình thành từ nhiều thế hệ. Một số người thích đi đại tiện ngoài trời vì thói quen lâu đời và cảm giác thoải mái. Nhiều người không muốn đi đại tiện trong một không gian hẹp, đặc biệt là đối với những người lớn lên với thói quen đó, thì đi đại tiện ở ngoài tự nhiên “thoáng gió”, không có mùi hôi, thường được coi là ưu điểm so với nhà vệ sinh kín. Chính phủ Ấn Độ đã chi khoảng 28 tỷ đô la cho chương trình Ấn Độ Sạch từ hơn chục năm qua, nhưng Marie-Hélène Zerah chuyên gia về Ấn Độ tại đại học Paris-Cité, trả lời đài phát thanh Pháp, giải thích thêm về những bất cập của chương trình này : « Có những nhà vệ sinh được xây dựng, nhưng lại được sử dụng cho mục đích khác, ví dụ như trở thành nơi chứa đồ. Những gia đình nhận được hỗ trợ tài chính để xây dựng nhà vệ sinh, nhưng lại xây một gian khác và tiếp tục hành vi đại tiện ở ngoài trời như truyền thống. Đó mà vấn đề đầu tiên. Thêm vào đó và tình trạng phân biệt đối xử đối với các gia cấp xã hội vẫn duy trì. Một số nhóm người không được phép sử dụng nhà vệ sinh công cộng, ngay cả trong thành phố. Vấn đề thứ ba là việc đông dân, ngay cả trong những ngôi làng, nên khó có thể xây dựng nhà vệ sinh ở khắp mọi nơi. Thêm vào đó, chính phủ đã chi rất nhiều vào đầu tư xây dựng hạ tầng, nhưng những công trình đó lại không đảm bảo chất lượng. Vấn đề quan trọng để thay đổi nhận thức về văn hóa xã hội, thì lại không được chú trọng. »   Nhiều nghiên cứu, trong đó có học giả Anisha Gupta, đã chỉ ra tình trạng thiếu nhận thức về lợi ích sức khỏe của việc sử dụng nhà vệ sinh. Một số người không biết về mối liên hệ giữa việc đại tiện ngoài trời và sự lây lan các bệnh lây truyền qua đường nước như tiêu chảy hoặc dịch tả. Một số khác thậm chí còn cho rằng có nhà xí sẽ tạo ra khí ga độc hại, gây bệnh. Và các chương trình tuyên truyền thúc đẩy việc sử dụng nhà vệ sinh lại không đề cập đến yếu tố tín ngưỡng văn hóa. Với hơn 10 năm nghiên cứu về vấn đề vệ sinh ở Ấn Độ, nhà nghiên cứu Anisha Gupta trả lời RFI Tiếng Việt bày tỏ quan ngại : “Hiện đã là năm 2025, trong khi chính phủ Ấn Độ đã thông báo chấm dứt tình trạng vệ sinh ngoài trời. Chương trình làm sạch Ấn Độ  nói trên đã chấm dứt, và không còn các hoạt động xây dựng nhà vệ sinh hoặc tuyên truyền phổ biến kiến thức. Do đó tôi e sợ rằng những nhà vệ sinh do chính phủ xây dựng sẽ sớm xuống cấp, không được bảo trì, hoặc không được sử dụng và tình trạng đi vệ sinh ngoài trời vẫn tiếp diễn. Chúng tôi hiện không có nhiều dữ liệu về vấn đề này, nên khó có thể biết chuyện gì đang xảy ra”. Trong nghiên cứu của mình, Anisha Gupta kết luận rằng sự thay đổi hành vi không thể áp đặt bằng biện pháp kỹ thuật hay tuyên truyền ngắn hạn, mà cần chuyển đổi nhận thức sâu về “sạch sẽ” trong khuôn khổ tôn giáo và đẳng cấp. Chỉ khi đó, các chương trình vệ sinh mới đạt được tính bền vững thực sự.

My brother and I received a call to ministry at a young age. I remember once speaking with him about what we envisioned for our lives in ministry. We both discussed our hopes and dreams (e.g., playing music in front of hundreds and even thousands of people, preaching before large crowds and seeing God move mightily through the work to which he called us, and living within the context of a successful occupation). We both agreed that we desired to be used of God tremendously and we would go anywhere the Lord sent us; we were willing to do anything, but it became clear that it was not acceptable to us to do so unseen. Paul teaches that the gifts and callings of God are without repentance or irrevocable (Rom 11:29). Nonetheless, human nature holds a propensity to forget or even neglect such truth, especially when one's call from the Lord goes unseen. Christians should take care in approaching tasks to which God has called them, for his plans are higher than the plans of humankind and his ways are unsearchable (Isa 55:8-9). The narrative in the final third of Genesis presents an often unseen and (assuredly) misunderstood focus, for the primary character, Joseph, does not hold the most important role. The aim here is for believers to perceive and understand their own task and calling as 1) for the glory of God alone rather than self and 2) meaningful despite the possibility of being unseen, rewarded, or praised. To properly comprehend Genesis 45, background of the book to such a point must be conveyed. Mindful of the fact that Joseph seemingly satiates the final fourteen chapters of the book of Genesis (chapters 37-50), a reader could straightforwardly miss the point of the story, which is precisely what occurs when believers make feeble attempts to turn the Bible into compartmentalized individual stories with the aim of moralistic therapeutic deism. One, for example, might interpret the story of Daniel refusing to eat anything but fruits and vegetables as a comprehensive approach to diet rather than a purpose for a specific time and a specific people and then proceed to imitate Daniel's diet with a belief that it is the only appropriate diet for the people of God when such a viewpoint would be a gross misinterpretation. In the book of Genesis, Joseph takes considerable space because he is a tool to preserve the chosen seed, which ultimately would be Jesus. The Apostle Paul referred to Adam as a type of the one to come (Rom 5:14). The doctrine of original sin infers that through Adam, the human race has been infected with the disease of sin; we are, therefore, sinners by nature. Just as humankind is dead in sin through Adam, so also are we, the church, made alive through Jesus Christ. Adam then was a type of what was to come, but the abundantly apparent truth is that Jesus is better than original sin. The gospel centers around Christ and his fulfillment of the law and of the covenant God made with his people. From the beginning of the Bible, God told the serpent, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heal” (Gen 3:15). This tells of the miraculous virgin birth that was to come, for Jesus had to be born of the Holy Spirit so as not to be conceived in sin. From the beginning of time, a promised seed was established to save God's people in the covenant, and while Satan continued to try to thwart the line of seed, God continued it. Cain killed Abel, but the covenant continued because then Seth was born. Then in Genesis 5, there is a genealogy of ten generations from Seth to Noah so that the promised seed is preserved. Seth and Noah are both promised seeds but not the ultimate promised seed; they would preserve the promised seed that is to come. Noah has three sons (Shem, Ham, and Japheth), and while the world is judged in a flood, they preserved the seed. Shem then preserves the seed later through Zerah who has a son named Abraham, the next link in the seed of promise. The problem, however, is that Abraham's wife, Sarah, is beyond childbearing years so Abraham tries to manipulate the situation by having a child with his servant and Ishmael is born. However, Ishmael is not the promised seed and eventually Isaac is born and then Jacob and Esau. Esau, the older, would seem to be the promised seed, but it is, in fact, Jacob, the younger. Jacob then has twelve sons. We might think Jacob's son, Joseph, is the promised seed, but the promised seed is Judah; Joseph merely preserves the seed. From Judah's line eventually comes Jesse who bears a great son named David who is again a promised seed but not the ultimate promised seed. The covenant is then renewed with David in that his lineage will sit on the throne forever. Even David's son, Solomon, is not the promised seed, but eventually through David's line, the ultimate Savior of the world was born of a virgin to save his people in the covenant.[1] Thus, Joseph is merely a tool for the Lord to use in preserving the life of Judah, for without Joseph's high position in the land of Egypt, his brothers might have perished in famine. Christians should understand that God's plans involve the entirety of his people and there is no job or calling too small or insignificant for him. The primary character of the story (at least in relation to the covenant of the Lord)—the protagonist if you will—then is Judah, for Judah preserves the promised seed in Jesus Christ. Therefore, after nine chapters of focusing on Joseph, the account is brought to chapter 45 of Genesis. 2 Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God. 3 He removed the foreign altars and the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles.[b] 4 He commanded Judah to seek the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and to obey his laws and commands. 5 He removed the high places and incense altars in every town in Judah, and the kingdom was at peace under him. 6 He built up the fortified cities of Judah, since the land was at peace. No one was at war with him during those years, for the Lord gave him rest. 7 “Let us build up these towns,” he said to Judah, “and put walls around them, with towers, gates and bars. The land is still ours, because we have sought the Lord our God; we sought him and he has given us rest on every side.” So they built and prospered. 8 Asa had an army of three hundred thousand men from Judah, equipped with large shields and with spears, and two hundred and eighty thousand from Benjamin, armed with small shields and with bows. Help us, Lord our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast army. Lord, you are our God; do not let mere mortals prevail against you.” 12 The Lord struck down the Cushites before Asa and Judah. The Cushites fled, 13 and Asa and his army pursued them as far as Gerar. Such a great number of Cushites fell that they could not recover; they were crushed before the Lord and his forces. The men of Judah carried off a large amount of plunder. 14 They destroyed all the villages around Gerar, for the terror of the Lord had fallen on them. They looted all these villages, since there was much plunder there. 15 They also attacked the camps of the herders and carried off droves of sheep and goats and camels. Come As You Are Series: TamarGenesis 38:26 “Then Judah acknowledged them and said, “She is more righteous than I, inasmuch as I did not give her to my son Shellac.” And he did not lie with her again.”The purpose of this series is to show you that God doesn't pick the perfect people to fulfill his plan. This is what we tell ourselves, or what the enemy tells us. We tell ourselves that God can't use us because we are not good people, and we have done bad things. If, by some miracle, we can believe that God wants to use us, then the enemy comes in and starts whispering lies in our ears. He tells us that we aren't enough and that God would never pick us. He reminds us about every bad thing we have ever done and tries to tell us that because of these things, God can't use us.I have been hearing this so much more from people lately, and that is what prompted this series. You may get tired of me saying the same thing over and over again. However, it is an important enough message that it is okay if I convey the same message 31 different ways. We need repetition. We need to hear things over and over again. Research suggests that we need to listen to things between 5 and 7 times before we remember them correctly. I think when we are trying to correct negative thinking, the number is much higher.Over and over again in the Bible, God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. He uses people who have sinned to show us that our sins don't count us out. He uses people who think they are better than others to show us that even if we feel that way, God can still use us. He uses people with unfavorable professions to show us that even if that is us, we can still be of use. God made you, He created you, He knows you. He can use you no matter what your circumstances are.Today, we will talk about Tamar. You can find her complete story in Genesis 38. I will summarize it for you. Tamar was married to one of Judah's three sons. His oldest son is named Er. But Er was wicked, in the sight of the Lord, so the Lord killed him. It was the custom when they lived that if your husband died before you got pregnant, it was the job of his brother to sleep with you and give you an offspring. So, Judah told his next son, Onan, to sleep with Tamar and give her a child. Onan slept with Tamar, but he withdrew before getting her pregnant, as it would not be considered his child. God did not like this, and he slew Onan too.Judah's younger son was too young to produce a child, so Judah told Tamar to go live as a widow in her father's house, and as soon as his younger son was old enough, he would give her to his youngest son. Over time, Judah's wife died, and Tamar saw that the younger brother had grown up, and Judah did not keep his promise. Tamar really wanted to have a child, so she dressed up like a harlot and slept with her father-in-law. He did not recognize her as she was covered. She asked him before they slept to gather to give her something so that he could go into her.Judah said he would send a goat. Tamar asked for his signet ring, cord, and staff as a pledge until he sent the goat. Judah agreed and went into her. Then, when he got back home, he sent his friend back with a goat for this harlot, but he could not find her, as Tamar was back to living as a widow in her father's house. Judah felt foolish, so he let it go. Then he heard, three months later, that Tamar had played the harlot and was with child as a result of this harlotry. Judah said to bring her out to be burned. However, when she came out, she brought the ring, cord, and staff and said, “By the man to whom these belong, I am with child.” This is where today's verse picks up. “Then Judah acknowledged them and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shellac.” And he did not lie with her again.”When Tamar gave birth, she had twins, one named Perez and one called Zerah. The next time we hear about Tamar is in Ruth 4:12. Her name is mentioned in the blessing at Boaz and Ruth's wedding: “ and, through the children that the Lord will give you by this young woman, may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.” By mentioning Tamar, the people are saying: Even out of broken, unexpected circumstances, God can bring blessing and a great family line. Perez Became a Symbol of Strength and Growth. Perez's name means “breaking out. He became the ancestor of a large, influential tribe in Israel. The blessing is basically saying: May your descendants “break out” in number, influence, and strength like Perez's did.Tamar was not an extraordinary person. She did not do anything spectacular. She was married and wanted to be a mom. However, God knew her husband was wicked and killed him. Then her brother-in-law was being selfish, and God killed him. However, God did not abandon her, and He did not forget her desire to have a baby. I am not condoning how she had that baby, and I have no idea if there was another way for her to have a baby or not. I don't think that is the point of the story.What I do know is that God used Tamar and her child to bring about Jesus Christ, the Messiah. After the mention in Ruth, we hear about Tamar in Matthew 1:3 when he is recounting the lineage of Jesus. “and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Aram.” I did not list the whole genealogy, but as you can see, Tamar is listed. There were 14 generations listed from Abraham to David, and from David to deportation to Babylon, there were 14 generations, and from the Deportation of Babylon to Christ, there were 14 generations. In all these generations listed in the genealogy, there are only five women listed. All the rest are men.Tamar, who dressed as a harlot to seduce her father-in-law to sleep with her so she could have a baby, is one of only five women listed in the lineage of Jesus. Are you starting to see what I am saying? Are you starting to believe me when I say God can and will use anyone He wants to use for His purpose? I know you feel like God can't or won't use you. You feel too old, too young, too sick, too busy. You feel as if your sins are too great. You feel as if you have done too much, and your sins can't be redeemed. In this story, there is no shame towards Tamar. There are so many people God could have used to bring forth Jesus. I am sure some people were going to the temple as they should have, following all the laws and doing everything right, and yet that is not who God chose.God wants to use you. I don't know what He wants to use you for, but I know He wants to use you. He is just waiting for your yes. He will use all you have been through as a beautiful testimony for whatever He is calling you to do. Don't be afraid to say yes, I promise He won't abandon you. He will be there with you each step of the way.Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless each person listening to this episode today. Lord, thank you for all you do for us. Thank you for redeeming us. Thank you for using us, even though we aren't even close to perfect. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your grand plan. Thank you for accepting us, flaws and all. Lord, we ask that you help us to believe you want to use us. Please help us to believe that whatever we have done it does not count us out. Please help us understand that you are bigger than anything we might have done. Joshua 7, Acts 9, Luke 6August 31st, 2025—Never short sell an immeasurably more God.Never underestimate the power of a simple prayer offered on behalf of a complex situation.Never dismiss the impact of obedience (or disobedience).A core problem of disobedience is its near-sightedness. Disobedience sees the tree but misses the forest. Obedience is 20/20 faith in an immeasurable more God. Joshua 6:15-19 (NIV) 15 On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times. 16 The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city! 17 The city and all that is in it are to be devoted to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid the spies we sent. 18 But keep away from the devoted things, so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it. 19 All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury.”A fundamental element of obedience is God goes first. When God gets our first, God gives us His best. Joshua 7:1 (NIV) But the Israelites were unfaithful in regard to the devoted things; Achan son of Karmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of them. So, the Lord's anger burned against Israel.Joshua 7:10-12 (NIV) 10 The Lord said to Joshua, “Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? 11 Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. 12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction.Satan is forever trying to convince us that God is not enough for us. That God doesn't have our best in His mind. God doesn't “get it” or me. God doesn't understand this moment. I have to take matters into your own hands. Sin always wants to hide, it never wants submit, surrender or be exposed. Romans 6:23a “the wages of sin is death”. Romans 6:23b but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord! Never dismiss the death in disobedience. Never dismiss the life in obedience.Acts 9:10-19 (NIV) 10 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!” “Yes, Lord,” he answered. 11 The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12 In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.” 13 “Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. 14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.” 15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! Disobedience bubbles up from 3 lingering impacts of our sin nature.Independence. Mistrust. Fear. What is Obedience?Obedience is a daily transfer of ownership. Obedience is faith in action in the love and goodness of God. Obedience is empowered actions.6 Disobedience Tipoffs“No one will ever find out.”“This really isn't that big of a deal.”“I deserve this.”“This won't impact anyone but me.” “Just this one time.” “This will be the last time.”All disobedience isn't a separating sin. All disobedience is self-limiting and a relational speed bump. All obedience is relationship building. All obedience empowers life with God's glorious riches. All obedience leads to life in us and others, more and better life than we could have ever imagined.Matthew 25:21,23 (NIV) “Well done my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful with a few things, I will make you ruler of many things. Come and share in your master's happiness.” What does it mean for God to find us faithful? I believe our faithfulness will be measured less by big outcomes and more by consistent daily obedience.

As one of a handful of Western photographers working in Afghanistan, Oriane Zerah has a unique perspective on daily life in the country. Her work is on show at the Fragonard museum in Grasse, in the south of France, in an exhibition entitled "Unveiled Women, Men with Flowers: A new face of Afghanistan", with images that upend stereotypes about masculinity and femininity under the Taliban. She tells us about the place of beauty in Afghan culture, about her own experience during the Taliban takeover of 2021 and why art is even being prescribed to young women in Afghanistan who are suffering under the oppressive regime there.

Put God between yourself and the foe"There is none like you to help." 2Ch 14:11 ESVFaced with an enemy he couldn't conquer on his own, King Asa prayed, "Lord, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us...we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast army. Lord, you are our God; do not let mere mortals prevail against you! The Lord struck down the Cushites before Asa and Judah" (vv. 11-12 NIV). F. B. Meyer writes: "Remind God of his entire responsibility. 'There is none like thee to help! The odds against Asa were enormous. There were a million men in arms...beside three hundred chariots. It seemed impossible to hold his own against that vast multitude. There were no allies who would come to his help: his only hope therefore was in God. There was none beside to help. It may be that your difficulties have been allowed to come to so alarming a pitch that you may be compelled to renounce all creature aid, to which in lesser trials you have had recourse, and cast yourself back on your Almighty friend. Put God between yourself and the foe. To Asa's faith, Jehovah seemed to stand between the might of Zerah and himself, as one who had no strength. Thoughts on the readings for January 23rd (Genesis 38; Psalms 41, 42, 43; Matthew 25 Genesis 38 speaks of a very unsavoury set of circumstances surrounding Judah and his daughter-in-law, Tamar. The chapter commenced with a visit from Judah to a prostitute, who bore him a son, Er. The prostitute bare Judah two further sons Onan and Shelah. As the two eldest reached marriageable age he took a wife, Tamar. Er was given in marriage to Tamar. Because of Er's wickedness he was slain by Yahweh. So Tamar was a childless widow. She was given her brother-in-law, Onan who under the rules of the day had the responsibility to raise up an heir for his dead brother. Onan was also wicked and acted evilly. He too was slain by God. Tamar waited a long time for Shelah to become an adult; and then she saw that Judah her father-in-law would not allow her to marry him. She acted to raise up an heir. She posed as a whore and lured her father-in-law into a liaison, by veiling her appearance (it seems she knew Judah's weakness). Judah promised to pay for her services; he didn't have money so he left his staff and signet ring for a pledge. His friend tried to make the payment for Judah, but found the woman gone. Judah later hears of Tamar's pregnancy and says she needed to be burnt for her infidelity. She sends Judah the staff and signet ring of the man who is the father. Judah relented and acknowledged his own hypocrisy. Tamar bore twins, who wrestled for the right to be the firstborn – Perez and Zerah. During the birth Zerah put his fist out and a scarlet thread was tied to his wrist. The fist was drawn in and his brother Perez born first (the name was given because he had burst forth in breech against his brother). The scarlet thread follows a theme throughout the Bible at the time of the taking of Jericho; the ancestor of Jesus in Ruth 4; the scarlet thread to which the hyssop was tied when the pierced Jesus was on the cross (Zerah means “pierced”). When Israel (Jacob) blessed his sons in Genesis 49 he said, “Judah, your brothers shall praise you” (verse 8 ESV). Certainly Judah couldn't be praised for the events in Genesis 38; but he will outshine at the end in the dealings with Joseph in Egypt. The lawgiver and king would come from Judah. And from that tribe the Lord Jesus Christ would be born; conquer sin and death; and in the kingdom rule over the whole earth. The great lesson we learn from the life of Judah is that his selfishness in his youth ultimately transformed into a mature caring and loving brother. Monday, 13 January 2025   For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21   “For where your treasure, it is, there also your heart, it will be” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus spoke of amassing treasures in heaven, noting that earthly treasures can be stolen or eaten up. With that remembered, He next says, “For where your treasure, it is, there also your heart, it will be.”   This is a link right back to the book of Joshua and the story Achan. He was fixated on earthly treasure, and that is where his heart was. It cost him everything –   “And Achan answered Joshua and said, ‘Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I have done: 21 When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it.' 22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver under it. 23 And they took them from the midst of the tent, brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the Lord. 24 Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the garment, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had, and they brought them to the Valley of Achor. 25 And Joshua said, ‘Why have you troubled us? The Lord will trouble you this day.' So all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones. 26 Then they raised over him a great heap of stones, still there to this day. So the Lord turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of Achor to this day.” Joshua 7: 20-26   On the other hand David had great wealth, but it did not possess him. Instead, he was a man of faith, and his heart was set on the Lord. The few times he is noted as having failed the Lord, it also notes that his heart was contrite, and he mourned over his blunders. David's treasure, above all else, was the Lord, and that is where his heart also was –   “Furthermore King David said to all the assembly: ‘My son Solomon, whom alone God has chosen, is young and inexperienced; and the work is great, because the temple is not for man but for the Lord God. 2 Now for the house of my God I have prepared with all my might: gold for things to be made of gold, silver for things of silver, bronze for things of bronze, iron for things of iron, wood for things of wood, onyx stones, stones to be set, glistening stones of various colors, all kinds of precious stones, and marble slabs in abundance. 3 Moreover, because I have set my affection on the house of my God, I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house, my own special treasure of gold and silver: 4 three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses; 5 the gold for things of gold and the silver for things of silver, and for all kinds of work to be done by the hands of craftsmen. Who then is willing to consecrate himself this day to the Lord?'” 1 Chronicles 29:1-5   Life application: There is nothing wrong with possessing wealth or protecting that wealth for the future. In fact, Proverbs says –   “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, But the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.” Proverbs 13:22   One cannot save up for his children's children if he doesn't possess wealth to some degree. The point of the Bible's words concerning this matter is essentially, “Are you master over wealth, or is your wealth master over you.”   Be wise concerning earning and saving, but also let your heart be directed to the Lord above all else.   Heavenly Father, help us to be responsible with the blessings You have bestowed upon us. If we squander what we have, it shows that our priorities were not directed toward You in the first place. Instead, we carelessly handled Your blessing upon us. At the same time, may we never let our possessions possess us. May You always be our hearts' desire. Amen.

Passage: 1 At that time Judah left his brothers and settled near an Adullamite named Hirah. 2 There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite named Shua; he took her as a wife and slept with her. 3 She conceived and gave birth to a son, and he named him Er. 4 She conceived again, gave birth to a son, and named him Onan. 5 She gave birth to another son and named him Shelah. It was at Chezib that she gave birth to him. 6 Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. 7 Now Er, Judah's firstborn, was evil in the Lord's sight, and the Lord put him to death. 8 Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother's wife. Perform your duty as her brother-in-law and produce offspring for your brother.” 9 But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his, so whenever he slept with his brother's wife, he released his semen on the ground so that he would not produce offspring for his brother. 10 What he did was evil in the Lord's sight, so he put him to death also. 11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Remain a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He might die too, like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father's house. 12 After a long time Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had finished mourning, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went up to Timnah to his sheepshearers. 13 Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.” 14 So she took off her widow's clothes, veiled her face, covered herself, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had grown up, she had not been given to him as a wife. 15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. 16 He went over to her and said, “Come, let me sleep with you,” for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me for sleeping with me? ” 17 “I will send you a young goat from my flock,” he replied. But she said, “Only if you leave something with me until you send it.” 18 “What should I give you? ” he asked. She answered, “Your signet ring, your cord, and the staff in your hand.” So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him. 19 She got up and left, then removed her veil and put her widow's clothes back on. 20 When Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get back the items he had left with the woman, he could not find her. 21 He asked the men of the place, “Where is the cult prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim? ” “There has been no cult prostitute here,” they answered. 22 So the Adullamite returned to Judah, saying, “I couldn't find her, and besides, the men of the place said, ‘There has been no cult prostitute here.' ” 23 Judah replied, “Let her keep the items for herself; otherwise we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send this young goat, but you couldn't find her.” 24 About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law, Tamar, has been acting like a prostitute, and now she is pregnant.” “Bring her out,” Judah said, “and let her be burned to death! ” 25 As she was being brought out, she sent her father-in-law this message: “I am pregnant by the man to whom these items belong.” And she added, “Examine them. Whose signet ring, cord, and staff are these? ” 26 Judah recognized them and said, “She is more in the right than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not know her intimately again. 27 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twins in her womb. 28 As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand, and the midwife took it and tied a scarlet thread around it, announcing, “This one came out first.” 29 But then he pulled his hand back, out came his brother, and she said, “What a breakout you have made for yourself! ” So he was named Perez. 30 Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread tied to his hand, came out, and was named Zerah. Genesis 38: A Summary and Reflection Genesis 38 stands out in the narrative of the patriarchs as it temporarily shifts focus from Joseph's story to the account of Judah, one of Jacob's sons. Summary of Genesis 38: 1.Judah and His Family (Verses 1–5): •Judah separates from his brothers and marries a Canaanite woman, Shua's daughter. •He has three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. 2.Judah and Tamar (Verses 6–11): •Judah arranges for his firstborn, Er, to marry a woman named Tamar. •Er is wicked in God's sight and is struck dead. •Following the custom of levirate marriage, Judah instructs his second son, Onan, to marry Tamar to provide offspring for Er. •Onan practices coitus interruptus to avoid producing an heir, displeasing God, who also strikes him dead. •Judah becomes reluctant to give Tamar to his youngest son, Shelah, fearing he too might die. He sends Tamar back to her father's house to wait. 3.Tamar's Deception (Verses 12–23): •After Judah's wife dies, he goes to Timnah for sheep-shearing, a time of celebration. •Tamar, realizing Judah has not given her to Shelah as promised, disguises herself as a prostitute and waits for Judah by the road. •Judah, unaware of her identity, propositions her and offers a young goat as payment. Tamar demands his seal, cord, and staff as a pledge until the goat is delivered. •After their encounter, Tamar conceives. 4.Judah Confronted (Verses 24–30): •Three months later, Judah hears that Tamar is pregnant and accuses her of immorality, ordering her to be burned. •Tamar sends Judah the seal, cord, and staff, revealing that he is the father. •Judah acknowledges his wrongdoing, saying, “She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn't give her to my son Shelah.” •Tamar gives birth to twins, Perez and Zerah. During the delivery, Zerah's hand emerges first, but Perez is born first, creating a significant reversal. Big Idea: Why family reunions are always weird. In the Beginning: Joseph Genesis 45:16-46:34 I. Every family has issues. 45:16-28 When the news reached Pharaoh's palace, “Joseph's brothers have come,” Pharaoh and his servants were pleased. Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Tell your brothers, ‘Do this: Load your animals and go on back to the land of Canaan. Get your father and your families, and come back to me. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you can eat from the richness of the land.' You are also commanded to tell them, ‘Do this: Take wagons from the land of Egypt for your dependents and your wives and bring your father here. Do not be concerned about your belongings, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.' ” The sons of Israel did this. Joseph gave them wagons as Pharaoh had commanded, and he gave them provisions for the journey. He gave each of the brothers changes of clothes, but he gave Benjamin three hundred pieces of silver and five changes of clothes. He sent his father the following: ten donkeys carrying the best products of Egypt and ten female donkeys carrying grain, food, and provisions for his father on the journey. So Joseph sent his brothers on their way, and as they were leaving, he said to them, “Don't argue on the way.” So they went up from Egypt and came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan. They said, “Joseph is still alive, and he is ruler over all the land of Egypt!” Jacob was stunned, for he did not believe them. But when they told Jacob all that Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to transport him, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. Then Israel said, “Enough! My son Joseph is still alive. I will go to see him before I die.” II. There's no distance too far for family. 46:1-7 Israel set out with all that he had and came to Beer-sheba, and he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. That night God spoke to Israel in a vision: “Jacob, Jacob!” he said. And Jacob replied, “Here I am.” God said, “I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you back. Joseph will close your eyes when you die.” Jacob left Beer-sheba. The sons of Israel took their father Jacob in the wagons Pharaoh had sent to carry him, along with their dependents and their wives. They also took their cattle and possessions they had acquired in the land of Canaan. Then Jacob and all his offspring with him came to Egypt. His sons and grandsons, his daughters and granddaughters, indeed all his offspring, he brought with him to Egypt. III. You can't pick your family name. 8-27 These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt—Jacob and his sons: Jacob's firstborn: Reuben. Reuben's sons: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. Simeon's sons: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman. Levi's sons: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. Judah's sons: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. Issachar's sons: Tola, Puvah, Jashub, and Shimron. Zebulun's sons: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. These were Leah's sons born to Jacob in Paddan-aram, as well as his daughter Dinah. The total number of persons: thirty-three. Gad's sons: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli. Asher's sons: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, Beriah, and their sister Serah. Beriah's sons were Heber and Malchiel. These were the sons of Zilpah—whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah—that she bore to Jacob: sixteen persons. The sons of Jacob's wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph in the land of Egypt. They were born to him by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, a priest at On. Benjamin's sons: Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. These were Rachel's sons who were born to Jacob: fourteen persons. Dan's son: Hushim. Naphtali's sons: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. These were the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel. She bore to Jacob: seven persons. The total number of persons belonging to Jacob—his direct descendants, not including the wives of Jacob's sons—who came to Egypt: sixty-six. And Joseph's sons who were born to him in Egypt: two persons. All those of Jacob's household who came to Egypt: seventy persons. IV. Only one family that lasts forever. 28-34 Now Jacob had sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph to prepare for his arrival at Goshen. When they came to the land of Goshen, Joseph hitched the horses to his chariot and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel. Joseph presented himself to him, threw his arms around him, and wept for a long time. Then Israel said to Joseph, “I'm ready to die now because I have seen your face and you are still alive!” Joseph said to his brothers and to his father's family, “I will go up and inform Pharaoh, telling him, ‘My brothers and my father's family, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me. The men are shepherds; they also raise livestock. They have brought their flocks and herds and all that they have.' When Pharaoh addresses you and asks, ‘What is your occupation?' you are to say, ‘Your servants, both we and our ancestors, have raised livestock from our youth until now.' Then you will be allowed to settle in the land of Goshen, since all shepherds are detestable to Egyptians.” Next Steps:  Believe: I need to be adopted into God's family today.  Become: I will become part of a group this week.  Be Sent: I will invite someone into my life this week. Group Discussion Questions:  When was your last family reunion?  What did the shirts look like? Is your family reunion worth traveling to?  Explain your answer. How do you handle family conflicts during family reunions?  How do you stay positive when dealing with difficult family members How can you pass on family values at a reunion? Explain. Is it easy to involve multiple generations at a reunion?? Pray for Jesus to show you someone who he wants in his family this week.
