In the process, several CBS stations in NFC markets not wanting to lose out on football jumped ship to FOX and set up a domino effect around the country changing many TV viewers' habits. Some of these changes are still being felt in various markets years later. It was March 21st, 1952, in Cleveland, Ohio, at about 9pm, when the first 7,000 or more ticket holders streamed into the Cleveland Arena with high hopes of seeing 5 of their favorite Rhytm & Blues artists perform for a huge dance. By 9:30pm, the place was filled to capacity with over 9,000 teens- but there were still more than 10,000 more "Moondoggers" waiting outside. The doors broke down, glass shattered, seats were ripped from their moorings on the floor, and pandemonium ruled for the next hour. It was all the creation of a talented WJW radio DJ named Alan Freed, who, on his midnight shows, had been promoted The Moondog Coronation Ball for weeks. It was the first of many firsts that night- the first rock concert and dance, the first dance to which black teens were invited (although they made up 99% of the crowd), the first time "Rock and Roll" came to mean good music with a beat which could be enjoyed by all races, and the first time a concert had to be shut down by the police. Freed would go on to earn the title "The Father of Rock and Roll" and make 4 movies starring as himself, R&B would be recognized as the progenitor of Rock, and Cleveland, thanks to that seminal concert, would be chosen to host the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Released Friday, May 12, 2023 This is PART ONE of a four-part series on the life and career of the television news legend, Virgil Dominic. It was Virgil Dominic who hired me at age 28, over 35 years ago, to be WJW's first weekday morning meteorologist for the Cleveland television market. I'll be highlighting excerpts from Telich Talks, a podcast hosted by former WJW colleague, John Telich, on which he interviewed Virgil about how he became involved in television news. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/andrebernier/support
As broadcast March 21, 2023 with plenty of early rock gusto. Tonight we start in Cleveland with the very first rock concert, organized by Alan "Moondog" Freed. Now, much like the howls of a dog at night, this one lasted about 30 seconds before the cops and fire department busted in and ended the show, but even so, it went down in the books as the very first rock n roll concert. Great tunes out this week from the likes of Night Tapes, Bodywash, Slackin Beats, and Portraits of Tracy while we scoured the map for the new indie goods, so we hope you enjoy!Tracklist:Part I (00:00)Tiny Grimes – BacksliderFreak Slug – 27 ClubGRMLN – ToeThe Jurgen Clubs – SoftNight Tapes – SeleneDivorce Court – 140Dougie Poole – High School Gym Part II (35:58)M83 – LauraParks Squares & Alleys – AllianceBodywash – No RepairSamaris – Wanted 2 SayXUL ZOLAR – Tell MeScotch Mist – Shadowbanned Part III (67:03)Danke Shane – Fingers Crossed BENTLE – SideshowPortraits of Tracy – The AfterpartyThe Natural Lines – MonotonyCinema Lumiere – Cotton Candy CloudsKapote – Brasiliko Part IV (94:10)Emina Sonnad – Turn the record overNanuk – YoungGideon Jeremia – Du kommer aldrig ta ManhattanNeil Cowley – Ticker TapeSlackin Beats & Kamohelo – TIMENevaris – Dub Sol

Over 30 years ago, a 52-year-old woman abandoned her dead newborn in a wooded area and was sentenced to life in prison. According to court records, Gail Ritchey was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years on May 24. Almost three years have passed since her case was filed. Ritchey w On June 6, 2019, she was indicted for aggravated murder and murder for the death of her newborn child, but her case was repeatedly rescheduled. She was found guilty of murder but acquitted of aggravated murder on April 5, 2022. The remains of the newborn, later dubbed "Geauga's Child," were found attacked by animals in the woods on March 25, 1993, according to WJW-TV. At the time, the Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office determined that the baby boy was born alive, but his cause of death could not be determined. To find her mother, detectives used a DNA database, and a large family tree eventually pointed to Ritchey. During her arrest, Geauga County Sheriff Scott Hildenbrand told WJW Ritchey that she admitted to delivering the child, placing him in a trash bag and leaving him in a wooded area. She also confessed to committing a similar crime two years prior. Geauga's Child was born to Ritchey at 22 years of age, according to WJW. According to reports, she gave birth while seated on the toilet, then placed him in a bag. "I took the bag out of the trunk, laid it in the woods, and I don't remember it making any noise." she said. During the sentencing hearing, Judge David Ondrey stated, "You have tossed away two infants because you could not face your problems and fears as a young woman and find a proper resolution. That is indeed monstrous behavior and you deserve this long prison term." If you like TRUE CRIME TODAY - Be sure to search and subscribe wherever you download podcasts! Alan Freed, the Cleveland DJ credited with coining the very phrase "rock 'n' roll." A 1954 WJW Cleveland recording of the opening of one of the Moondog Shows. (Two minutes). In the late 1940s, while working at WAKR, Freed met Cleveland record store owner Leo Mintz. Record Rendezvous, one of Cleveland's largest record stores, had begun selling rhythm and blues records. Mintz told Freed that he had noticed increased interest in the records at his store, and encouraged him to play them on the radio. Still under the non-compete clause with WAKR, Freed moved to Cleveland in 1951, having already joined WEXL (channel 9) in the middle of 1950 as an announcer. However, in April, through the help of William Shipley, RCA's Northern Ohio distributor, he was released from the non-compete clause. He was then hired by WJW radio for a midnight program sponsored by Main Line, the RCA Distributor, and Record Rendezvous. Freed peppered his speech with hipster language, and, with a rhythm and blues record called "Moondog" as his theme song, broadcast R&B hits into the night. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Freed

Ian attended the University of Minnesota for both college and graduate school. Eventually the university decided it had seen quite enough of him, so it politely but firmly asked him to leave, grow up, and get a real job. Ian's parting gift was a doctorate in physics for his research on radio galaxies. After finishing his thesis, he moved to New Mexico just as soon as he found a group of people willing to hire him. He's still a bit surprised by this because he has no useful skills. In 2005, Ian attended the Clarion Writers' Workshop in East Lansing, Michigan. (This was the second-to-last Clarion class in the program's 35 year run at Michigan State University, before the program moved to its new home at UCSD in 2007.) There he spent six weeks living in a sweltering, slightly creepy, soon-to-be-condemned sorority house with twelve other aspiring writers. Scurvy was a problem. However, in spite of many predictions, cannibalism was not. After Clarion, and thanks to Walter Jon Williams, he was welcomed into New Mexico's disproportionately large community of professional science fiction and fantasy writers. Although he often feels like a minor league batboy inexplicably mistaken for a professional baseball player, he has shared critiques with, and worked alongside, a long list of New Mexico writers including WJW, Daniel Abraham, Melinda Snodgrass, S. M. Stirling, Ty Franck, Victor Milán, Sage Walker, and George R. R. Martin. Nowadays he lives in northern New Mexico, where he consorts with writers, scientists, and other disreputable types.
