PERHAPS GLIMPSES OF AN FBI OPERATION IN PUTIN'S RUSSIA: 2/4 Lost Son: An American Family Trapped Inside the FBI's Secret Wars by Brett Forrest (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Lost-Son-American-Family-Trapped/dp/0316591610/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= When Billy Reilly vanished, his parents embarked on a desperate search for answers. Was their son's disappearance connected to his mysterious work for the FBI, or was it a personal quest gone wrong? Only when Wall Street Journal reporter Brett Forrest embarks on his own investigation does a picture emerge: of the FBI's exploitation of US citizens through a secretive intelligence program, a young man's lust for adventure within the world's conflicts, and the costs of a rising clash between Moscow and Washington. Sept. 11th roused Billy Reilly's curiosity for religions, war, and the world and its people beyond his small town near Detroit. Online, Billy taught himself Arabic and Russian. His passions led him into jihadi Internet forums, attracting the interest of the FBI. An amateur drawn into professional intelligence, Billy became a Confidential Human Source, one of thousands of civilians who assist FBI agents with investigative work, often at great hazard and with little recourse. When Russia stirred rebellion in Ukraine, Billy set out to make his mark. In Russia, Billy's communications dropped. His parents, frantic, asked the FBI for help but struggled to find answers. Grasping for clues, the Reilly family turned to Brett Forrest. Commencing a quest of his own, Forrest applied years' worth of research, along with decades of extensive experience in Russia, illuminating the inner workings of the national-security machine that enmeshed Billy and his family, picking up the lost son's trail. A masterwork of reporting, composed like a thriller, blending political maneuvering and international espionage, Lost Son illustrates one man's coming of age amid new global dangers. 1900 TBLISI, GEORGIA

On Georgia's pivotal elections and its post-Soviet history. [Full episode only for patrons] Hans Gutbrod, who has been working in the Caucasus region since 1999 and now teaches at Ilia State University in Tblisi, talks to Alex about Georgia's choice between the EU and Russia. We discuss: Who is Bidzina Ivanishvili, whose wealth is equal to 1/4 of GDP? What is the ruling Georgian Dream's pitch to voters, and how has it turned 'rightward'? Did Georgia witness the end of history, or merely the de-development of the post-Soviet years? How has civil society become dominated by NGOs, and is this a problem? Can Georgia flourish in a multipolar world, acting as an entrepôt between East and West? A huge protest movement has taken to the streets in Georgia against the "foreign agent" law. This new legislation would require all organisations that receive foreign funding to declare it on a national register. Protestors have argued that this is the thin end of the wedge amid an increasingly authoritarian climate in the country for human rights advocacy and civil society organisations. To discuss what this uprising tell us about our changing world, hosts Luke Cooper and Zoe Williams reached out to an old friend of the Another Europe Is Possible campaign, Alex Scrivener, who campaigned with us back in the 2016 EU referendum. Today, he is the Director of the Democratic Security Institute, an organisation based in Tblisi that faces being declared a 'foreign agent' by the Georgian government. On this podcast he discusses the parallels between his activity on the streets of Georgia today, fighting a Putin-backed nationalist campaign, with the 2016 EU referendum in the UK, and what this tells us about the new imperialism engulfing our world. For some background reading from Alex, see his piece on 'hard power' here and his argument for a values-based foreign policy here. An extended version of this podcast is available to members of Another Europe is Possible. To join and support our work go to anothereurope.org/join. On this podcast's extra time, we change the topic altogether to talk about the UK General Election.
Thousands of young people have been out protesting in Georgia. But this isn't organised by the opposition or a political party - these demonstrations are being driven by the 20 year olds themselves. It's all because of a “foreign agents” law the government there is trying to bring in. There's a fear that this law will suppress dissent and prevent Georgia from eventually joining the European Union. This law will require non-governmental organisations and media outlets that receive more than 20% of their funding from abroad to register as an "organisation serving the interests of a foreign power". Don't worry, we'll go through it all in the episode. The government says the law aims to increase transparency. Critics refer to it as the “Russian law” because it mirrors similar legislation introduced by Russian President Vladimir Putin in his country.Nutsa Dzandzava (22) and Dato Dolaberidze (23) have been spending their spare time on the streets of Georgia's capital Tblisi. We hear why they're protesting and what they hope to achieve. The BBC's Rayhan Demytrie explains a bit about Georgia's history with Russia - and the details of the controversial law that started the protests. Georgia's parliament has passed a “foreign agents” bill. Tens of thousands of people have gone out to the streets to protest in the capital city of Tblisi. The bill is modeled after a similar law in Russia. Plus, the Israel-Egypt peace treaty has been a linchpin of stability in the Middle East for the last 45 years. The war in Gaza may be putting that agreement at risk. And, three women from Saudi Arabia are facing political consequences for social media posts. One has fled the country, another is in prison and the third faces a travel ban. And they're sisters. So, what happened to promises of new freedoms for women in the kingdom? Three news stories summarized & contextualized by analytic journalist Colin Wright.Georgia students walk out, PM passes 'foreign agent' billSummary: Hundreds of university students in the Georgian capital city, Tblisi, walked out of classes in solidarity with the thousands of protestors who have been taking to the streets almost every night for a month in opposition to a bill that will ostensibly allow the government to clamp down on foreign NGOs, while also making eventual accession to the European Union more difficult or impossible; despite that opposition, Georgia's parliament voted the law through yesterday.Context: The governing Georgian Dream party has argued that they need to know who's behind NGOs operating in the country, and that this legislation would give them a better idea of who's funding what, which in turn would help them flag potential interference by Western powers; opponents of this law have argued that it's a clone of a Russian law that allows them to basically label anyone they don't like a foreign operative, which in turn allows the ruling party to jail their political opponents and anyone else who makes trouble for them; the Georgian Dream party has thus been accused to attempting to stall or prevent Georgia's joining the EU in favor of better relations with Russia, while the vast majority of the country supports more alignment with Europe; Georgia's president is expected to veto the law, though parliament can override that veto with another vote.—ReutersOne Sentence News is a reader-supported publication. To support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.US energy panel approves rule to expand transmission of renewable powerSummary: After two years of development, US federal energy regulators approved a rule that's meant to help boost the country's power grid by streamlining aspects of the infrastructure deployment and upgrade progress, while also changing how costs are divvied-out to involved states.Context: This is a big rule—about 1,300 pages long—so there are a lot of specifics and niche situations addressed, but in essence it's meant to simplify existing rules and folkways in the energy infrastructure space that have incentivized energy companies to not expand and invest in new poles, cables, and the like, while also leaving a lot of existing power infrastructure un-upgraded, despite the huge amount of new power generation that's been coming online, and which is scheduled to come online in the next decade; this is generally being seen as a big deal, but there's still ample room for it to be challenged in court, most likely by energy companies that don't want to make these investments or risk losing their regional monopolies, and state legislators who oppose the deployment of new renewable energy power production.—The Associated PressChina to start $138 billion bond sale to boost economySummary: Beginning this Friday, China's government will begin selling 1 trillion yuan, which is about $138 billion US dollars, in long-term bonds as part of an ongoing effort to boost its economy at a tricky moment.Context: China's economy has faced several years of less-than-impressive numbers, in part because of how regional governments have been spending and how much debt they've been taking on, in part because of normal ebbs in productivity and population figures, and in part because of how dependent the economy had become on real estate, an industry that in recent years has suffered from all sorts of collapses and scandals; this debt is ultra-long-term, with more than half of it maturing in 30 years, about a third of it in 20 years, and around a tenth in 50 years, according to a report by Bloomberg, which hasn't been confirmed by the Chinese government; word of this sale has been well received by investors, in part because it's thought the People's Bank of China will loosen regulations on banks alongside this bond sale, and some analysts believe this sale could add as much as a full percent to China's GDP.—BloombergA recent survey by Generation Lab supports the assertion that, though Gaza-related protests at universities around the US have been dominating headlines, Israel's invasion of Gaza is a priority of relatively few students, and the majority are more concerned about healthcare and economic issues.—Axios$1 billionAmount of reelection campaign contributions former President (and now candidate) Trump asked for at a fundraising dinner with top oil executives last month. In exchange, he offered to allow for more oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Alaskan Arctic, to reduce car pollution regulations, and to pause natural gas export permits that have limited oil companies' ability to export as much gas overseas as they would prefer—alongside a general promise to do a complete U-turn on climate-related policies and legislation passed by the Biden administration.—The GuardianTrust Click Get full access to One Sentence News at onesentencenews.substack.com/subscribe
So far, Ukraine's bill includes $61 billion, Taiwan's includes $8 billion, and Israel's includes $26 billion.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: The cause of the initial pipeline rupture in Canada has not been publicly released, and is currently under investigation. However, due to the sensitive nature of pipeline security incidents, it is very unlikely that any details will be made public as to whether or not a security incident was to blame for the explosion. However, taking into account the very obvious atmospherics that deliberate infrastructure attacks are to be expected at this time of heightened international conflict, it would be prudent to remain situationally aware as more incidents involving critical infrastructure occur.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//
Technically, FTP is on a production break, but we don't want you, our loyal listener, to go without great footy travel content, so we're bringing you episodes of other footy, travel, or footy-travel podcasts we think you'll enjoy. And we're starting with something very special… …the entire 1st season of Counterspective. Counterspective is another Fyper Media podcast, and Season 1 was the precursor to the Footy Travelers Podcast. It was released in the summer of 2019, a year after Mike and Colin's third World Cup: Russia 2018. As you'll quickly learn, it goes well-beyond the in-stadium experiences they had, beyond the footy - although one of the episodes is focused on that topic specifically - and it dives deep into the details and nuances of traveling in a country most of us wouldn't dare to visit at the present moment. As the now monikered Footy Travelers met new people, tried new food, and tested their really poor Russian language skills, they explored Ruski culture through that footy travelers lens.

As broadcast March 21, 2023 with plenty of early rock gusto. Tonight we start in Cleveland with the very first rock concert, organized by Alan "Moondog" Freed. Now, much like the howls of a dog at night, this one lasted about 30 seconds before the cops and fire department busted in and ended the show, but even so, it went down in the books as the very first rock n roll concert. Great tunes out this week from the likes of Night Tapes, Bodywash, Slackin Beats, and Portraits of Tracy while we scoured the map for the new indie goods, so we hope you enjoy!Tracklist:Part I (00:00)Tiny Grimes – BacksliderFreak Slug – 27 ClubGRMLN – ToeThe Jurgen Clubs – SoftNight Tapes – SeleneDivorce Court – 140Dougie Poole – High School Gym Part II (35:58)M83 – LauraParks Squares & Alleys – AllianceBodywash – No RepairSamaris – Wanted 2 SayXUL ZOLAR – Tell MeScotch Mist – Shadowbanned Part III (67:03)Danke Shane – Fingers Crossed BENTLE – SideshowPortraits of Tracy – The AfterpartyThe Natural Lines – MonotonyCinema Lumiere – Cotton Candy CloudsKapote – Brasiliko Part IV (94:10)Emina Sonnad – Turn the record overNanuk – YoungGideon Jeremia – Du kommer aldrig ta ManhattanNeil Cowley – Ticker TapeSlackin Beats & Kamohelo – TIMENevaris – Dub Sol
As broadcast April 4, 2023 with all praises due. Tonight we open in 1968 as we mourn the 55th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. All the words, all the praises, all the vile insults, and everything else have been thrown about this Hero of the People and Prophet of Peace but we can only give a kiss and point to the sky above to a man who changed the world with his martyrdom. What if I told you that American Dream with the white picket fence isn't even what the creator of the term intended? Or that his intention of the American Dream was closer to Martin Luther King Jr's idea of American success than the Horatio Alger "rags to riches story?" As third-culture kids, my cousin and I get into the idea of the American Dream and what it means to us, overseas. We also discuss topics like “Is anti-hustler culture, anti Jamaican?” His favorite part about living in Tblisi Georgia and. Tblisi is a city you should visit at least once in your life! Here's what I've been up to the past week.
Zviad Gamsakhurdia was a Georgian nationalist leader who served as his country's first independent President from 1991 until 1992. Under him, Georgia became a hellish place, ripped apart by civil war, organised crime and militia violence. Sadly, Gamsakhurdia cannot be acquitted in all of this as a placeholder- his commitment to an ethnically homogenous Georgia, in a part of the world anything but, was always going to lead to problems. Gamsakhurdia's own life ended in a Tblisi bunker in 1993, probably by suicide, and is a rather sordid reflection of how Georgia's own utopian dream for its future died on its feet in the early 1990s. Listening to my guest today, Gamsakhurdia reminded me of two former subjects on this podcast, the Welsh nationalist leader Saunders Lewis, and the Serb dictator Slobodan Milosevic, both of whom also had a no-holds-barred and blunt approach to nationalism. Thankfully, the country has taken a different and cannier path to self-government since, and is a relative success story among the post-Soviet states. My guest for this conversation today is Tom de Waal. Tom is a senior fellow with Carnegie Europe, and is one of the leading authorities on the Caucasus region. I would highly recommend is book The Caucasus: An Introduction, to anyone looking to read up on this amazing and enigmatic part of our continent. As well as Gamsakhurdia's life, Tom and I discussed the bizarre interplay between Stalinism and Georgian nationalism, Georgia's place in Europe, and how a country and a region so far away from the capitals of diplomacy has forged relations with the great World powers.

Saul Robbins is interested in the ways people interact within their surroundings and the psychological dynamics of intimacy. His photographs are motivated by observations of human behaviour and personal experience, especially those related to loss, unity, failure, and the latent potential residing in traditional photographic materials and personal history. Robbins is best known for “Initial Intake”, which examines the empty chairs of Manhattan-based psychotherapy professionals from their clients' perspective; “How Can I Help? – An Artful Dialogue”, a pop-up office into which he invites strangers to speak with him about anything they wish for free and in complete confidence. Robbins is also the father of a young boy and since 2012 has created several series of abstract “photographic drawings” and sculptures made from physically altered chromogenic paper and chemistry in response to his desire and struggles to start a family, including: “Where's My Happy Ending?;” “Chemical Peels;” “Fertile Gestures;” and a new series of traditional photographs. Exhibitions include The Bolinas Museum, Blue Sky Gallery, Busters, Deutsche Haus at NYU, chashama (Windows Installation), Griffin Museum, Humble Arts, ICP, KOLGA TBILISI PHOTO, Lilac Arts, MASQUELIBROS Artist Book Fair, Lilac Arts, Massachusetts General Hospital, MICA, Museum of Fine Arts – Houston, New Orleans Photo Alliance, Ost Gallery, Moscow, Pelican Bomb, Portland Art Museum, The Educational Alliance, Philoctetes Center, Skirball Center, Mark Woolley Gallery, White Gallery (PSU), and others. His photographs have been published in Aufbau, Berlin Tagesspiegel, CPW Quarterly, D - La Repubblica, Dummy, More, The New York Times, Real Simple, TAM, and Wired, among others. Grants and awards include The Covenant Foundation Ignition Grant, Sony World Photography Awards (Finalist), U.S. Embassy, Tblisi, GE, AJPA Rockower, Gunk Foundation, and New York Foundation for the Arts. Curatorial projects include Intervening Histories, OFF_Festival, Bratislava (2015), Projecting Freedom: Cinematic Interpretations of the Haggadah (2010), Regarding Intimacy (2007), and No Live Girls, Peep Show 28 (2002). Robbins was awarded a NICA Stipendium from Berlin's Hoch Schule der Kunste in 1998, and received his MFA from Hunter College (CUNY) in 1999, where he studied with Roy DeCarava, Mark Feldstein, Juan Sanchez, and Thomas Weaver. He teaches photography in New York City and has been leading Master Workshops internationally, helping photographers and artists to incorporate communication and professional development strategies into their creative practice. TECH CLUBBERS PODCAST W/ TRIPEO Over the years, Tripeo has edged out an exceptional corner of the techno spectrum for himself. Brought to life as Darko Esser's puristic alter ego, he has gradually returned to his namegiver's eclectic roots, while also delving deeper into his musical metier. Each new Tripeo track is a clever patchwork of pulsating rhythms and minimalistic melodies – seemingly simple, yet utterly refined. Darko Esser's devotion to electronic music spans several decades. He has built his international reputation based in two small, but tight-knit music communities in Holland. First as a talent buyer at Groningen's Simplon, later as a booker and resident of Doornroosje in Nijmegen. Productionwise, Darko Esser has first brought out a string of superb releases under his own name, including his debut album, also called ‘Balans'. Tripeo's ‘First Trip' in 2012 was meant as somewhat of a side project. But soon enough, his new monicker struck a chord with connoisseurs worldwide. Especially when he unleashed his critically acclaimed album ‘Anipintiros' in 2014, making him a household name from Berlin to Buenos Aires, and from Great-Britain to Georgia. Georgia's Tblisi is one of the remarkable places abroad where Darko has found a deeper connection with the local crowd. The fearless determination and graceful open-mindedness of Bassiani's techno community have been an inspiration in both his DJ sets and productions. It makes perfect sense for him to release his most diverse Tripeo album to date on the club's esteemed label. Further exploring the crossroads between fierceness and vulnerability, ‘Green Is the New Red' incorporates experimental escapades like electro and ambient. Relentless and emotionally charged, this is Tripeo at his most compelling. Zij sprak daar naar aanleiding van haar boek: The first lady of Georgië.

This is part two of a two-part episode with Sofia Japardize, a labor activist based in Tblisi, Georgia. Before preceding, we highly recommend hitting the pause button and starting with part 1! Georgia is in some ways ‘a land between'. Red Star tends to focus on East Asian topics, but we had the opportunity to have on a good friend of the show, Sopo Japardize. She's a labor organizer based in Tblisi, Georiga, a fascinating country located at the nexus of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Most listeners will probably know Georgia as the former USSR republic. Sopo and her comrades host a great podcast focused on this legacy called ‘Reimagining Soviet Georgia', links to which are below. In this two part episode, we talk about the legacy of Soviet Georgia, the country's experience having been the laboratory for the darkest fantasies of US libertarian think tanks following the socialist bloc collapse in the early 90s, and contemporary social movements in the country. In part 2, we get more into how the new left is attempting to forge and independent path between NATO expansionism from the West and the cynical transgressions of Russia's oligarchy from the East. The Republic of Georgia has a storied history in the heart of the Caucasus mountains. Host Terrell Starr first went there after the fall of the Soviet Union when they were still struggling to figure out a new way of life. In today’s episode of Black Diplomats he talks about that critical time, for him and for the nation of Georgia. He talks about living in the region as a Black man, and how he found ways to connect with his neighbors. Then Terrell talks to Eka Gigauri, a native Georgian who serves on the board of Transparency International and has been watching the political crisis in Tblisi with a close eye. Terrell wrote an article for Foreign Policy magazine on the situation last week and was eager to get up to speed with someone on the ground. These two old friends reminisce on the past, give us a tour of what Georgians have built in their country, and talk about what they’re looking forward to. Music by Tall Black Guy and Quintet Urmuli. Thank you for listening!
From the 1960s to the 1990s, four Georgian women ruled the world stage—also including Nana Alexandria and Nana Ioseliani. Dubbed druzhina—a combat-unit—by commentators, they inspired a mushrooming of chess schools up and down the country. From our latest print magazine, this story explores the history of Georgian women chess players and their impact on the game.

Nagorno-Karabakh is a mountainous region in the south caucuses that is claimed by both Armenia and Azerbaijan. Since 1994, the sides have been locked in stalemate, with periodic fighting. Now, the worst fighting in decades has erupted. In a matter of days, this has become a major international crisis with big geopolitical implications. Olesya Vartanyan is a senior analyst with the International Crisis Group, working in the South Caucuses. I caught up with her from Tblisi, Georgia. We kick off discussing the history of conflict in this region, before she gives her analysis of why such intense conflict is erupting right now. We also discuss the broader regional and geopolitical implications of this fighting.
Dennis chats with author Brent Hartinger via Skype from Port Washington, Washington about his career about his 14th novel The Otto Digmore Decision, a sweet and funny a gay burn victim trying to make it as an actor in Hollywood. He also talks about his breakout first novel Geography Club, one of the first YA novels to feature gay teens, how it tapped into a market no one knew was there and went on to become a film in 2013. He also talks about growing with his young readers, going to self-publishing after being with Harper-Collins, and his 2007 novel Project Pay Day which was shot as a film last year. Brent also discusses he and his husband Michael's big lifestyle change; in 2017, they sold their house in Seattle and have spent the last three years traveling the world and working remotely as "digital nomads.' He talks about what he's learned on his journeys, how it's changed his relationship to his husband, making friends on his travels and the importance of good Wifi. Other topics include: the pros and cons of selling out, the craziest things he's eating abroad, getting rid of stuff, spending two months a year on cruise ships, going to a gay club in Tblisi, Georgia and enjoying a transcendent bag of Doritos. www.brenthartinger.com

What is phage therapy?Phage therapy refers to the use of bacteriophages to treat bacterial infections. While it has been used scarcely in the Western world in recent decades, some doctors and researchers see a need for it in the future, to combat antibiotic resistance among bacteria. In 1917, French-Canadian microbiologist Félix d’Hérellee discovered phage therapy. Bacteriophages, or phages for short, are actually viruses which are extremely common in the biosphere. They’re able to kill bacteria by invading them and multiplying within them. Phage therapy can be used to treat basic wounds, as well as different kinds of bacterial infection, like bone infection, respiratory infections and MRSA. Instead of using antibiotics, which destroy all bacteria they come across, specific strains or cocktails of phages are used for each patient. At the time antibiotics were created, public authorities considered them more simple and effective than phages. To such an extent that phages were gradually forgotten and even destroyed in many countries. But in the 21st century, certain bacteria have become resistant to antibiotics, which is a major health issue. Researchers have renewed their interest in phages and are looking at their potential uses to fight otherwise incurable diseases. Some countries actually already use phage therapy, most notably in Georgia. Sick patients from around the world are spending thousands of dollars to travel to Tblisi, the country’s capital. They then spend several weeks undergoing treatment at the Eliava Institute. It’s moving week for our rugby and soccer teams – by the end of it there’s a good chance we’ll have either have moved on or moved out. Gavin Cummiskey and Gerry Thornley check in from Japan, where the Rugby World Cup has been lit up by the hosts. How did nobody see Japan coming? Where do Ireland stand ahead of the quarter-final against New Zealand? Will the fact that this could be Joe Schmidt’s last week in the job have any effect? Emmet Malone is in Geneva as Mick McCarthy’s Ireland team prepares for the crucial Euro 2020 qualifier against Switzerland on Tuesday night. Here, too, there are questions. Will Aaron Connolly start? Why were Ireland so dreadful against Georgia? And are the nervy Swiss actually there for the taking? All this on your Monday Added Time, with Malachy Clerkin and John O’Sullivan.

Because travel has changed my life in so many varied ways, I know that it's transformative; when I talk to three other people who believe this, like for this Episode 152 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, I'm even more sure about how transformative travel can be. If you're able to rearrange your budget to get travelling then go and do it! In this episode I start off speaking with Dean O'Shea who runs a business devising trips for mostly corporate professionals with the hope that they'll be transformational - and it sounds like it's working. Dean gives me a couple of examples of people he's already helped to have some major life transformations as a result of particular travel experiences. I then chat with Nate Hake who used to be a trial lawyer in the United States. These days he's travelling the world - he was about to head to Tblisi, Georgia when we spoke - and his own life has been substantially transformed through his travel experiences. As an Aussie I'm proud to say there were Australians involved in this transformation, too! Finally, I talk with Fiona Galloway who uses the tag line "transformative travel" to describe the tours she runs. She's passionate about the power of travel to transform lives in so many ways. "We have now seen the unseeable" according to scientists who are part of the Event Horizon Telescope group. The international team has released a picture of the first black hole. Data gathered from an array of over 8 radio telescopes has been crunched to create a picture of the super-hot plasma surrounding the black hole M87. It shows extremely excited photons on the brink of being swallowed up by the supermassive black hole, 500 million trillion km away. Marnie Chesterton, asks UCL cosmologist Andrew Pontzen what the glowing doughnut-shaped image can tell us about the laws of gravity and relativity. A new species of hominin has been discovered in caves at the northernmost tip of the Philippines, on the island of Luzon. The discoverers have called this creature Homo luzonensis, and it's thought to be 50,000 years or older. The teeth, hand and foot bones suggest it could have been a mixture of early modern humans - Homo sapiens- and older ancestors like the Australopithecines. Cambridge University's Leverhulme Professor of Human Evolution, Robert Foley suggests some caution with calling this a new species, and explains how populations of hominins isolated on islands could evolve to be different by a mechanism called genetic drift. The world is facing an antimicrobial crisis. The global fight against infections is looking worrying as more and more strains of bacteria emerge which are resistant to our stocks of antibiotics. Marnie visits to Tblisi, in Georgia to meet scientists who are looking at a different way to fight infections, collecting and using the microscopic phage viruses which infect the bacteria which infect us. Another way to try and beat antibiotic resistance was the focus for Susan Rosenberg at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston Texas, when she thought it might be clever to try and stop microbes evolving resistance to antibiotics . She discovered that when microbial cells are stressed, a number of them actually start to mutate at a greater rate. This means they stand a greater chance of mutating into a form that has some resistance to our drugs. But by learning about the finer details of this mechanism, and finding a drug that can halt it. She and her team hope to skew the evolutionary arms race between microbes and antibiotics and our immune systems in our favour. Producer: Fiona Roberts
A non-stop conveyor belt of invigorating initiatives, Eastern Europe continues to be a land of fascination for those of us stuck in the sterile West. However, while cities like Kiev, Belgrade and Tblisi are regularly touted as the ‘new Berlin’, negative stereotypes will persist for as long as this region’s countries continue to be seen as a breeding ground for dubious political orientations. In both cases, these representations are fuelled by a Western media with a less than comprehensive understanding of these territories. Happily, there are new media platforms emerging in the East, which are not just contributing to the region’s cultural dynamism but are also spreading narratives that challenge our perceptions of Eastern Europe. With Nadia Beard (The Calvert Journal), Lucia Udvardyová (Eastern Daze), Petrică Mogoş (KAJET Journal), Laura Naum (KAJET Journal) and Oscar Rickett (Journalist)
Í þætti vikunnar hringir Hismið til Georgíu og ræðir við Magnús Geir Eyjólfsson, upplýsingafulltrúa NATO, í Tblisi. Magnús fer yfir stemninguna í Georgíu sem hann segir einkennast af djúpu raunhagkerfi og að nútímaprjál sé ekki stundað þar. Áhrifavaldar séu t.d. ekki þekktir þar í landi og menn sprauti í sig sterum í líkamsræktarstöðvum án þess að finnast það neitt tiltökumál. Þá er farið yfir eitt og annað úr vikunni, samræmdu prófin, skattframtöl og sífellda tölvuvæðingu nútímans og hina æsispennandi verðlaunaafhendingu Ríkiskaupa á innkaupamanni ársins og hvort fleiri stéttir þurfi ekki að taka upp sams konar aðferðir.
Dan Gable had the opportunity to coach the late Dave Schultz on World and Olympic teams. On Episode 51 of the World Wrestling Resource Podcast, Gable explains when he first heard about some teenager from California entering the Tblisi tournament and what happened next. Gable recounts why he was a better fit at Oklahoma with coach Stan Abel at the time and how Schultz was constantly studying the sport in a time before easily traded video was available. Gable also recounts the dynamic of the 1984 team and the Schultz brothers as well as a quick sidebar about the Ed Banach vs. Mark Schultz NCAA final from 1982. This is required listening.

Michael, Logan & Michelle are back to recap Amazing Race 28's visit to Tblisi, Georgia! This week: Michael & Logan hit 100 podcasts together. Find out how Michael prepares the intro each week (and what Ben's intro would have been if he'd have joined us!) Phil gets an Australian nickname, before going a little bit Wu. There's a cameo from a Survivor, thanks to him having already been to Freedom Square. A taxi driver attempts to fat-shame. Find out why Michelle is Shola. Phil gets bored and starts messing with teams whilst they're racing. Logan nearly guesses a HaMerotz task from their Georgia legs. Michael's favourite impression returns, thanks to Georgia Spas. The three-legged race champions of this season are crowned. Michelle pleads for someone to get a bit more stabby. Find out what it still popular in Canada. One task goes a bit Aladdin, and Michael has a giggle fit. Logan exposes a record that turned this episode from Bloody Fingers 101 to Bloody Fingers 104. How do you pronounce Caucasus? The successor to Hayley & Justin is crowned. Whose skillset is almost perfect for this detour (minus the crime-fighting)? Why should Phil be given a megaphone next season? Logan can't tell cats & dogs apart. We compare dance routine tasks from TARs gone by. Who would have been in Jack & the Beanstalk had they done the Roadblock? Why didn't Blair step up and dance? Dana likes dancing. Someone actually goes a bit Rupert Boneham. Why was this week's prize basically to Canada? Phil channels Rachel Reilly. Michelle feels left out, thanks to stats. And who is actually getting a winners' edit?
On today's Satellite Sisters, Julie leads off with an International News Round-Up that starts in outer space and lands in Thailand. We are all very happy to hear that the Philae comet lander has woken up and tweeted a message to earth. Hello! Also in Julie's tour of the world: A flood in Tblisi, Georgia has wild animals roaming the streets, Putin keeps the Pope waiting (again), eating live red ants in Thailand may be good for you but the raw fish might not. You heard it on Satellite Sisters first. The sisters discuss the comments of embattled Nobel Laureate Tim Hunt. Kudos to the female scientists who tweeted their ridicule with the hashtag #Distractinglysexy. Comedic revenge is always sweet, but Lian asks if some of the other punishment over the top. Sheila's school year is over so she fills us in on her latest attempt at gift card living, an ill-fated hike that may be her last, a shoe injury that left a mark and some tension at the dry cleaners. In other words, Pluto's moons. And Liz tips us off that a piece she wrote for Fortune Magazine about unconscious bias in the board room will be posted on the Fortune blog in the next day or two. We'll share it around so you can post your own comments.

If you search for adventures in the Caucasus, it is his picture that should pop up first. From the loud taverns of Tblisi, to the shiny new streets of Gonzy and eventually to the future Olympic village of Sochi, he has seen it all and shared many of his adventures with anyone that cares to know. Now he has taken his greatest hits from the Caucasus and assembled them in book form (in Dutch). The result is a hilarious, insightful, and often exciting journey in a region with so much diversity and such a rich history. On today's podcast I'm joined by none other than Olaf Koens, as we sit along the Amstel river in a windy afternoon, we talk about some of those adventures in that magical region of the world. His book, (.nl) Koorddansen in de Kaukasus
Pastor Staten's message this morning is entitled "The Cross that Jesus died on." Pastor talks about his trip to Tblisi, Republic of Georgia to visit missionary and son, Jared and family. God has declared that He will build his church upon a rock and hell will not be able to conquer it. The events of today instill fear in us. Find your comfort in the words that Jesus has spoken. The cross is a principle for life. He gave himself upon the cross so that others may live.
