Sometimes we bury the lede in the title so let's rectify that straightaway: featuring special guest Melinda Snodgrass! We've never been shy about our obligatory Star Trek references and as we've undertaken our long, strange trip through Asimov's Robot Novels and some related short stories, those references skewed sharply in the direction of The Measure of a Man, which is in my opinion "the moment when The Next Generation earned the right to call itself Star Trek." It's great TV and great SF and a monument to themes and ideas that Asimov championed throughout his career. So for this episode, we going to treat you to an episode-long Star Trek reference as we're joined by the author of The Measure of a Man, the aforementioned Melinda Snodgrass! Please excuse us, we're all a bit starstruck. In addition to writing the quintessential Data episode for TNG, Melinda Is a lifelong Science Fiction fan who has written many novels including the Circuit series, co-created the Wild Cards series of books, and has extensive screenwriting credits including L. A. Law, Sliders, and The Outer Limits. Within the realm of Star Trek, Melinda has written Tears of the Singers, a TOS novel, and five episodes of TNG, which also include a second Data-Centric episode, The Ensigns of Command. She was the Story Editor on Next Generation while the show transformed from a program struggling to find its voice into the science fiction juggernaut we all know and love. As Jon puts it, this episode “slaps!” You do not want to miss this one! Let's go!
We finally know that season 2 of Apple TV+'s Foundation will begin on 14 July. Rather than tackling another novel, we're wrapping up season 3 of Stars End with short stories and guests. In our next episode, we're both pleased and proud to announce that we'll be interviewing Melinda Snodgrass, author of the first truly great episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and the source of many of our Star-Trek-related digressions, "The Measure of a Man." But in the meantime, for this episode, we're reading The Great and Glorious Az's "The Bicentennial Man," (TBM) which is based in part on a suggestion from famed science fiction editor Judy-Lynn del Rey. To quote the good doctor, "Of all the robot stories I ever wrote, 'The Bicentennial Man' is my favorite and, I think, the best." In The Complete Robot, he pairs it with our last episode's subject, "...That Thou Art Mindful of Him" (TTAMoH) in a section entitled "Two Climaxes" where he envisions the ultimate fate of the three laws and the science of robotics. Of the two, TBM has the less auspicious genesis. You'll recall that TTAMoH was commissioned for an anthology entitled Final Stage which charged the authors with taking their themes to their ultimate conclusion. TBM was commissioned for an anthology entitled "The Bicentennial Man" where the stories could be anything at all so long as it was suggested by the phrase, "The Bicentennial Man." That, to a large degree, was the way things worked in the US in 1976. But there was an earlier suggestion from del Rey about "...a robot who has to choose between buying its own liberty and improving its own body." After reading TBM, Judy-Lynn wanted the story, and when the original anthology fell through, Judy-Lynn got the story. It appeared in a different anthology, one that she edited, Stellar Science Fiction #2 published in February 1976. So, don't miss our discussion of "The Bicentennial Man, " the Good Doctor's favorite Robot Story, and his third favorite story overall, surpassed only by "The Last Question" and "The Ugly Little Boy." Let's go!

As our unofficial Festival of Beverly continues, Anika and Liz hang out in some caves and have very earnest discussions about terrorism. Yes, we're discussing "The High Ground"! Star Trek: Picard spoilers from 00:00 to 00:59 We are deeply unqualified to talk about the Troubles. Of course, so were the TNG writers… (Book credits: Just Another Kid by Torey Hayden and Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe. If you want a review of "The High Ground" from an actual Irish person, please see this post by the always excellent Darren Mooney.) As a character study of Beverly Crusher, "The High Ground" is amazing. As an episode with something to say about terrorism, it … exists. Melinda Snodgrass was particularly good at including female characters in roles that otherwise tended to default male, and not worrying about whether or not they were "likeable". When Finn talks about the moral cowardice of the Federation, he probably just watched "Lift Us Up Where Suffering Cannot Reach". "The High Ground" does avoid the common American trope of romanticising the IRA. Yes, Beverly and Deanna are both in feminised "caring" professions, but, um, how many female CMOs have been regulars in Trek? The nameless boy who becomes Beverly's apprentice Picard spoilers from 31:28 to 32:16 The Beverly/Picard shippiness in this episode is OFF THE CHARTS Finn feels like a first draft of Chakotay Just gonna put this out there: the Prime Directive is bad, actually Picard spoilers again from 41:11 to 44:30

Get ready to be inside joy this week as we finally reach the first TNG film: "Star Trek: Generations"!Mikanhana of Sailor Noob and Just Enough Trope returns to the show this week to discuss the Next Generation crew's first foray onto the big screen. When the Enterprise-D responds to an innocent distress call, her crew finds themselves drawn into an interstellar conspiracy with a deadly purpose. Picard must literally race against time to save his crew and prevent more destruction and he'll need the help of a long "dead" Starfleet legend...Captain James T. Kirk! The TOS series of films had its ups and downs, but it went out about as well as it possibly could with the excellent Star Trek VI. Now, it was a new crew's turn to take the reins. A crew who had proven popularity on the small screen but was yet untested at the box-office. What began as a possibly calculated move--the inclusion of former franchise star William Shatner in the film--became instead a unique and rewarding opportunity to let both franchises meet on-screen and to see the torch passed, from one generation to another. On this episode, we talk about familiar and yet unfamiliar sight of Next Gen on the big screen, the new cinematic look of TNG, the way the film captures the heart and the intellect of the series, the new facets of characters like Picard and Data, the poignant themes of change and loss, and why it's okay that your movie "feels like a long episode."We also discuss TV shows and movies swapping roles, the birth of unhelpful criticism, the James Cameron sequel, thanking Melinda Snodgrass, the mystery of 47, getting Geordi an iPhone, hangin' with Nana, racing RedLetterMedia, the punchiest captain in Starfleet history, running out of Data stories, throwing women overboard, the Riker/Worf broship, Big Kirk Bi Energy, that Nexus sweet spot, Beef Jerky Sting, groundhog eggs, and saying goodbye to the D!Hug your cat; you never know!Follow Just Enough Trope and Sailor Moon on Twitter and give them a listen!https://twitter.com/justenoughtropehttps://twitter.com/noob_sailorLearn the story behind your favorite Trek episodes with BackTrekking!http://www.twitter.com/backtrekkingWait 'til Tuesday with us on Facebook and Twitter and the Just Enough Trope Discord!http://www.facebook.com/eistpodhttp://www.twitter.com/eistpodhttps://discord.gg/WVvCHVWqzfBuy us a fire engine on Patreon and Ko-Fi!http://www.patreon.com/eistpodhttps://ko-fi.com/E1E01M2UASubscribe to the show on iTunes!https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/enterprising-individuals/id1113165661?mt=2

Then, Acomi expresses how thankful he was that Turk talked to wrestler Katie Forbes and her amazing abs. This week, I speak with Melinda Snodgrass, a recovering lawyer and the screenwriter behind the Season 2 Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, Measure of a Man.
At the height of Star Trek: Picard's first season, we hailed writer Melinda Snodgrass to have a chat about the character she created in Bruce Maddox who was a central character of that season. The post That Time When We Met Melinda Snodgrass appeared first on Trekzone.
Acomi and Turk182 create a highbrow, learned man's fight club by pitting literary authors against one another in a sport of fisticuffs. They choose various authors throughout history and decide who would win in a no hold barred cage match; or dirty street fight. Wanna know who's tougher, JD Salinger or Thomas Pinchon? Sue Grafton or Melinda Snodgrass? Paul Reiser or Tim Allen (yes, they both *cough* wrote *cough* "comedy" novels)? Well, we didn't think of them at the time. But, you can find out who would win between Charles Schultz and Dr. Seuss, or Edgar Allen Poe versus HP Lovecraft. PS. Google his cat's name, you'll love it! And, after the blood bath and stale sweat that smells like fried chicken, Acomi and Turk recommend some of their favorite authors for reading; not fighting. #OMTWF #Acomi #Turk182 #KorovaEntertainment #Libraries #books #novels #paperbacks #famousauthors #RIF #bookfight #warofthewords Follow Acomi on Twitter at @AcomiDraws and on Instagram at AcomiDraws. How I'm feeling done with video meetings, bailing on a book at 90%, buying a new car, middle books, and how fun it is to have a screenwriter talk about how they'd film your book. This is the wonderful article I mention on the real "Lord of the Flies." Our special bonus season of the Invaders From Planet 3 podcast continues, this time with author Melinda Snodgrass as our guest. I've journeyed deep into the catacombs beneath the Lair of bloginhood (still currently located in a fort made of old, half-used rolls of Christmas wrapping paper in your great-aunt Tilly's basement closet because social distancing lockdown rules prevent the Lair from shifting across space as it normally does) and discovered a previously unaired mini interview with Melinda where she shares her list of her Top 5 favourite works of speculative fiction by other writers. Bear in mind, it's been a couple of years since we chatted, so some of her favourites may have changed. Be sure to contact your local bookstore or library to find out how you can get copies of the stories on her list (or check your favourite video streaming service to find the movie Aliens), and pick up a couple of Melinda's novels while you're there! To learn more about Melinda or her stories, check out her website: melindasnodgrass.com To listen to Invaders From Planet 3, or to subscribe, visit Libsyn, iTunes, or your other favourite podcatching service. Be sure to rate and review us while you're there!

Life is never fully dull aboard a Federation starship, and sometimes it isn't even fully defined. This week the Generals take a look over at _Star Trek: The Next Generation_ as they do their best to quantify at what point a machine is also a person. Now, we love Data as much as the next guy (as long as the next guy isn't Commander Bruce Maddox), but Riker can make quite the argument. What do we love about this episode? Who do we hate? How psychic is General Zac? All of this as well as news on Doctor Who, Disney+, and more! Listen to more General Nerdery at www.generalnerdcast.com Check out all earVVyrm podcasts at www.earvvyrm.com
One of our favorites, Melinda Snodgrass, returns to the podcast in timely fashion. As the writer of Measure of a Man, which introduced Bruce Maddox and the idea of rights for synthetic life forms (as well as the senior staff's fondness for poker), Melinda has insight into the character, and also an interest in seeing how it all plays out in the Picard series. Plus, Melinda learns about cetacean ops.Find Melinda Snodgrass at www.melindasnodgrass.com and on Twitter @MMSnodgrass, or follow her on Facebook.Follow us @makingitsopod on Insta & Twitter, or email us: makingitsopod@gmail.comLLAP!
It is largely considered the first “great” episode of Star Trek The Next Generation and rightly so. Melinda Snodgrass wrote a powerful examination of what constitutes life and how our treatment of life reflects on humanity as a society. There is also commentary on the historical existence of “disposable people” or classes that are relied upon to do the dirty or dangerous work. This episode examines the nature of humanity and sentience at its most basic levels as well as letting us see a righteously indignant Picard fighting for what is right for the first real time in the series, and as any fan knows righteously indignant and angry Picard is the best Picard. This Episode may rank at number two on my list but it is probably my favorite as it maybe the quintessential TNG episode. That doesn’t however mean “best”. Favorite and most representative can be very different from “best” We get to overall best next week. Sci-Fi Malady RSS

BackTrekking returns again to look back at the real-world inspirations of classic Trek episodes! This week, hosts Ka1iban and GooeyFame are talking about the all-time great Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Measure of a Man" and the Supreme Court case of 1857 that inspired it, Dred Scott vs. Sandford! Dred Scott was a slave who fought in the courts for his freedom and his amazing story formed the basis for a similar tale about Data being put on trial to defend his right to exist! On the show, we talk about the historical facts in the case of Dred Scott, the turmoil present in the divided America of the Antebellum era, his right honorable dumdum dodo Roger B. Taney, our very human Founding Fathers, and the WORST DECISION the Supreme Court ever made. We also talk about the subtle mastery of Melinda Snodgrass's script for "Measure", robo racism, the "pleasant" language of oppression, the wisdom of having Whoopi in the episode, Jonathan "Face Acting" Frakes, plucking a pigeon, the lack of AI in Trek, and Riker putting his leg up on himself!Tweet at the show or your hosts with your suggestions for future episodes!http://www.twitter.com/backtrekkinghttp://www.twitter.com/ka1ibanhttp://www.twitter.com/gooeyfameSee Kal's interview with Melinda Snodgrass about "The Measure of a Man"https://www.facebook.com/eistpod/videos/1893178130987304/Proud member of the Analog Legends network!
