What does it mean to labor in modern-day America? Alex Gallo-Brown took the stage with visions from his book Variations of Labor, offering poetry, essays, and fiction about all walks of work. In conversation with Nicole Vallestero Keenan-Lai of Puget Sound Sage, Gallo-Brown explored the lives of semiprofessional poker players, line cooks in high-tech company cafeterias, and an activist trying to drum up support for a union. Gallo-Brown painted a bleak picture of dead-end jobs and truncated hopes, while simultaneously depicting the roil underneath the surface of all those who have been disrespected and written off. Sit in with Gallo-Brown and Keenan-Lai for the complex, sobering, and human stories of labor in our country. Alex Gallo-Brown is a poet, journalist, and labor activist from Seattle. He is the author of The Language of Grief, a collection of poems. He has received emerging artist awards from WonderRoot and the City of Atlanta and twice been nominated for the Pushcart Prize in poetry. Nicole Vallestero Keenan-Lai is the Executive Director of Puget Sound Sage. Previously, she was the Executive Director of the Fair Work Center, a hub for workers to understand and exercise their legal rights, improve working conditions, and connect with community resources. Presented by Town Hall Seattle as part of the 2019 Homecoming Festival. Recorded live at The Forum by Town Hall Seattle on September 2, 2019.

The city's history and united spirit will be on full display through an artistic project called Off the Wall. Created by the City of Atlanta, the Super Bowl Host Committee and nonprofit WonderRoot, 30 murals will showcase Atlanta's dedication to civil and human rights, with each piece unveiled one by one before the big game in February 2019. Spread throughout the city, the murals will highlight stories, issues and the progress of Atlanta's communities. AJC digital intern, Tara Subramaniam, sat down with one of the painters and the executive director of WonderRoot to discuss the inspiration behind the initiative and its intended long-lasting legacy on our city. Plus, host Shane Harrison shares things to do during the next 10 days, including the Piedmont Park Arts Festival. For more on the AJC's Super Bowl coverage, check out ajc.com/53.

On this episode of Art Is King podcast we visit the studio of one of ATL’s great artists: Jungle 45 Creator, FTP Activist and Super Talented Goldi Gold. Ive had the pleasure of knowing Goldi since the early 2000’s when his vector illustrations caught my eye and pushed me to take Adobe Illustrator as a serious art tool. We spent a couple of hours in Goldi Gold’s studio and he broke down his art and life philosophy, the wisdom of art partners and his upcoming art show at City of Ink August 29th, titled "Invest in Gold" check out goldi’s instagram and Facebook for more info on his upcoming projects and commissions at @goldigold45http://instagram.com/goldigold45 Goldi Gold's photo © 2014 Sheree R.
