Transferred from Grady Hospital in Atlanta after receiving treatment for car crash-related injuries, Elizabeth was admitted to Landmark Hospital with a stable stage 2 sacral ulcer, which quickly escalated to stage 4. The pressure ulcer took a full year to heal, but Elizabeth's activities continue to be limited due to the poor wound care she received. Despite the defense's attempts to blame Landmark's new medical records system, Elizabeth's daughter and even Elizabeth herself for her injuries, a Gwinnett County, Georgia jury returned a verdict of $1,300,000 in damages.    Guest Bio: Richard Mitchell Richard C. Today is Friday, November 3rd and happy 73rd birthday to boxer Larry Holmes. ***LARRY HOLMES*** I'm Bruce Jenkins and here are your top stories presented by Kia Mall of Georgia. Mountain View High grad Charbel Aoun Who Founded Nonprofit Named to Georgia Trend's 40 Under 40 list Editorial: After a sharp decline during the pandemic, child poverty is soaring again AMERICAN DREAM: Honoring Jimmy Carter's legacy of humanitarian work a 'full circle' moment Plus, my conversations with the director of marketing Jon Carr from the Aurora Theater and Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss net carbs. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG STORY 1: Mountain View High grad Charbel Aoun Who Founded Nonprofit Named to Georgia Trend's 40 Under 40 list The Georgia First Generation Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Gwinnett County, was founded following a business competition pitch at Georgia State University in 2016. Charbel Aoun and Francisco Martinez, both first-generation college students, recognized the barriers faced by students pursuing higher education and established the foundation to support these students and create a sense of belonging and community for them. To date, Georgia FirstGen has established student chapters in seven Gwinnett County high schools, assisting 750 first-generation students with a 95%+ college acceptance rate. Aoun, who is now a third-year pharmacy student, was recently recognized by Georgia Trend magazine's 40 Under 40 class of 2023 for his dedication to equitable access to higher education and mentorship. STORY 2: Editorial: After a sharp decline during the pandemic, child poverty is soaring again Child poverty in the United States surged in 2022, with more children living in poverty than before the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic had initially reduced child poverty, thanks to measures like the enhanced Child Tax Credit (CTC) program. In 2021, the child poverty rate dropped to 5.2% due to these programs. However, Congress allowed these measures to expire, leading to a child poverty rate of 12.4% in 2022, affecting approximately 9 million children. Poverty negatively impacts children's nutrition, health, education, and overall well-being. The author argues that reducing child poverty should be a high priority and that the U.S. has the means to achieve this goal. STORY 3: AMERICAN DREAM: Honoring Jimmy Carter's legacy of humanitarian work a 'full circle' moment The author shares a personal story of their family's journey to the United States from Cuba in 1980 during the Mariel Lift Boat event. They describe how they were initially scared of Americans but eventually realized they were in America when they arrived in Key West. The author has lived most of their life in Gwinnett County, Georgia, and became actively involved in community service, including joining the Medical Reserve Corps and assisting with COVID-19 responses. They also serve on the board of the Southwest Gwinnett Chamber and the Good Samaritan Health Center of Gwinnett. In 2023, the author and their husband launched the Thumann Foundation to focus on children's healthcare, nutrition, safety, and education. They were selected to the Gwinnett Leadership program Class of 2024 and recently had a full circle moment when honoring President Jimmy Carter's legacy. Candidates are vying for credit for these funds, even though the settlements resulted from a coalition of attorneys general and private lawyers. North Carolina's Attorney General Josh Stein, running for governor, lists securing opioid settlement funds as an accomplishment. However, mixing politics with these funds raises concerns about their effective allocation and potential misuse. Advocates argue that the focus should be on how the money can be used to save lives and address the public health crisis of opioid addiction, which claimed over 100,000 American lives last year. STORY 6: Buford Middle Competition Cheerleaders Repeat as State Champions Buford Middle School's competition cheerleading team secured their second consecutive state championship victory, competing against other Class AAAAAAA feeder middle schools. The Wolves scored 93.5 points, outperforming Lakeside-DeKalb, the runner-up, and North Paulding, who placed third. This win marks their third state championship in five years. The team consists of sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students and is led by coach Caroline Parker. The achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of these young athletes, contributing to their school's proud cheerleading tradition. Coming up next. And Marietta to host annual parade and 4th in the Park festival   Plus All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.   Commercial : CU of GA   STORY 1 killed   A fatal multi-vehicle crash occurred in Powder Springs, resulting in the death of a 54-year-old man named Gregory Brown of Dallas. The incident took place at the intersection of Richard D. Sailors Parkway and Old Lost Mountain Road. Brown was driving east in a Toyota Corolla, while a 29-year-old woman was driving a Ford Mustang in the same direction. Simultaneously, a 26-year-old man was heading west in a Hyundai Elantra. The Hyundai attempted to turn left onto Old Lost Mountain Road and collided with Brown's Toyota, which then struck the Ford and a metal pole. Brown was taken to Wellstar Cobb Hospital, where he later passed away. The driver of the Ford sustained injuries and was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Cobb police...........……... Read more about this at mdjonline.com   Story 2: hearing   Two Cobb County residents have sought to join a lawsuit against the Cobb Board of Commissioners over the redrawing of commission district boundaries. Cobb Commissioner Keli Gambrill, a Republican, initiated the lawsuits in response to the Democratic majority's use of "home rule" powers to redraw their district lines, specifically to benefit Commissioner Jerica Richardson. The county motioned to dismiss the case because Gambrill does not reside in the district affected. However, Gambrill has now requested the court to include Catherine and David Floam as plaintiffs, arguing that they were previously in Gambrill's district but were moved to District 3 due to the county's maps. Cobb County attorneys countered that the Floams lack standing. Both sides await resolution through the court process.   Story 3: parade   The city of Marietta is hosting its annual "4th in the Park Celebration" today, starting with the "Let Freedom Ring" parade at 10 a.m. The parade will have over 2,000 participants and is expected to draw a crowd of around 30,000 people. The parade route will be closed 45 minutes before the event, and roads around Glover Park will remain closed all day. The parade will start on Roswell Street, pass through Marietta Square, and end at Cherokee Street and North Marietta Parkway. The grand marshal of the parade is Charlie Duncan, a 104-year-old World War II veteran. The festivities will include arts and crafts, a kids zone, food, and free concerts featuring Scott Thompson, the Atlanta Concert Band, and the Patriarchs Band. The headline concert at 8 p.m. will feature the Atlanta-based band Boogilicious, and fireworks will be launched from the parking lot of First United Methodist Church at around 9:30 p.m. Due to limited parking, attendees are encouraged to use cabs or ride-sharing services, with the designated drop-off and pick-up location at the intersection of Lawrence and Waddell streets.........….we'll be right back   Break: Dayco - ESOG - jrm   STORY 4: ag   Georgia's agriculture commissioner, Tyler Harper, emphasized the significant role farmers play in the lives of Georgians during a speech at the Cobb County Republican Women's Club luncheon. He reminded attendees that agriculture is the state's largest industry, contributing over $70 billion and more than 340,000 jobs to the economy. Harper, a seventh-generation farmer, highlighted the values of hard work, faith, and integrity instilled in him through his upbringing. He praised a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that ruled against the EPA's expansive regulatory efforts in the Waters of the United States (WOTUS) case, stating that it violated property rights and gave the federal government excessive control over resources. Harper believes that farmers are best equipped to manage their own land and emphasizes the importance of sustainability in small, family farms.     STORY 5: prize   The winner and finalists of the 10th annual Poet Laureate's Prize in Georgia have been announced by Chelsea Rathburn, the state's Poet Laureate, in collaboration with the Georgia Council for the Arts. The prize recognizes an original poem written by a high school student in Georgia, aiming to inspire young writers and promote poetry. This year, over 200 students submitted their poems. The winner for 2023 is Eniola Badejo from Hillgrove High School, and the finalists are Isabella Fonseca, Andrea Lam, Celina Simone, and Jeonghyeon "Erica" Yun. All winning and finalist poems are featured on Atlanta Magazine's website. Georgia high school students are encouraged to participate in the annual competition, with details for the 2024 competition available on the Georgia Council for the Arts website in fall 2023.   Story 6: walk   Keli Gambrill, the commissioner for west Cobb, hosted her monthly "Walk and Talk" meetup at Allatoona Creek Park, marking the fourth event of the year. The purpose of these gatherings is to connect with constituents in District 1, enjoy nature together, and stay updated on the happenings in the northwest Cobb community. Gambrill initiated these events in March, aiming to meet people where they are and facilitate open communication in a comfortable setting. The recent event saw attendees like Josh Camp from MTB Atlanta, a nonprofit organization working to expand mountain biking trails. MTB Atlanta and Cobb County raised $23,000 for Allatoona Creek Park through a raffle and a bike race. Residents Vicki and Victor Williams also attended, appreciating the accessibility and exposure these events provide. The next "Walk and Talk" will take place at Lost Mountain Park on July 26..…………we're back, in a moment   Break Elon – Ingle's 8- Drake   Story 7: influencers   Neely Young, former publisher of Georgia Trend magazine, spoke at the Kiwanis Club of Marietta about his book "Georgia Made: The Most Important Figures Who Shaped the State in the 20th Century." The book explores influential Georgians, including President Jimmy Carter and Martin Luther King Jr., covering athletes, politicians, activists, and more. Young, a history enthusiast, wrote the book after a long career in journalism and serving as a curator for the Georgia Historical Society. The book features two Cobb residents, Bill Shipp and Gen. Lucius D. Clay, who made significant contributions. Young's own journey, overcoming aphasia through therapy, inspired him to write and encourage others facing similar challenges. The audience applauded his speech, and readers found pride and inspiration in learning about notable Georgians.   Story 8: titles   Tahir Hines, a rising senior at Allatoona High School, fulfilled his track and field dreams by winning the Class 6A state championships in discus and shot put. He was named the Cobb County Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Hines began his track and field journey at the age of 8 and transitioned from soccer. While the repetitive nature of the sport challenged him mentally, he learned the importance of pacing himself and taking breaks to prevent burnout. Hines has gained a deep appreciation for the sport and sees it as a privilege. He aims to repeat as a state champion and break the state records in shot put and discus.   Story 9: jamil   McCeachern alum redshirt junior Jamil Burroughs, a defensive lineman for the Alabama Crimson Tide, has entered the transfer portal. Burroughs played in 20 games over three seasons and was expected to be part of the team's defensive line rotation in the upcoming season. However, his status came into question after reports of a physical altercation with an Alabama staff member. Burroughs' eligibility for the upcoming season is uncertain, and he may need a waiver from the NCAA to play. Burroughs is the fourth defensive player and the first defensive lineman to leave Alabama since the end of last season. The team has recruited new interior defensive linemen to fill the gaps.   We'll have Final thoughts coming up after this……     Break: Henssler 60 Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. We've all heard that inspiration matters in life. But can inspiration be measured? And what true effects does inspiration have on our performance in life – work, athletics, in the classroom? Mike welcomes back entrepreneur and author Kevin Scott to talk through the principles behind his new book, Inspired Every Day. According to what Kevin has uncovered in his research on the topic, the genius of a flashbulb moment happens much more often when a person has developed a lifestyle that blends three indispensable ingredients: a purpose to live for, a problem to tackle, and a partnership with likeminded people. One or two won't do. It takes all three. Listen in, as Kevin shares his heart behind the book – and see how inspiration can truly transform you or your organization.About Kevin:Kevin Paul Scott has traveled to six continents and spoken to leaders from more than 100 countries. Kevin is the co-founder of ADDO, a leadership consultancy based in Atlanta, Georgia. ADDO exists to inspire people today to impact tomorrow. One of the biggest challenges in helping victims of human trafficking is reiterating the importance of a victim-centered approach. When law enforcement agents are new to human trafficking, they must remember that someone is not in a sex-trafficking position because they want to be. A lot of manipulation is behind the situation, along with prior trauma that may have led that individual to their awful situation.  These cases differ from other investigations, such as drugs, guns, and gangs. They affect human lives, and these individuals will be the key to making the case. When working with these human trafficking cases, there needs to be an element of compassion while also being careful about removing biases. [01:09] Profile of this episode's guest: Alia El-Sawi - Victim Assistance Specialist at Homeland Security Investigations Alia has been a Victim Assistance Specialist with Homeland Security Investigations since 2010. Before her work with HSI, she served as the Anti-Human Trafficking Program Coordinator for a nonprofit organization called Tapestri. She has received many awards and recognitions, including Georgia Trend's “Top 40 Under 40” Georgians, Islamic Speakers Bureau of Atlanta's “Top 40 under 40”, and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Directors Award.  [02:29] What is human trafficking? While human trafficking and human smuggling can be related, they are different. Both may involve movement of some sort. However, smuggling generally is done with the goal of the person having a better quality of life. Human trafficking consists of an ulterior motive by the trafficker to exploit the individual. With human trafficking, the individual may not understand or fully know they're being brought somewhere for an exploitative purpose. They may have been promised a job, but that job ends up looking very different. Labor trafficking is a form of human trafficking that uses force, fraud, or coercion to recruit individuals for some particular employment where the individuals end up in servitude. Sex trafficking involves commercial sex, where an individual is forced into what some refer to as forced prostitution. [11:25] Alia's role at Tapestri and journey to Homeland Security Investigations Alia started working in the anti-human trafficking field with Tapestri, a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization based in Atlanta, Georgia. At Tapestri, Alia provided direct services for survivors of both labor trafficking and sex trafficking of juveniles and adults, specifically within the various immigrant and refugee communities. Because of her work with Tapestri, Alia spent a lot of time building connections with local, state, and federal law enforcement. She referred case after case that agents could successfully present to the U.S. Attorney's Office, which successfully prosecuted. When the role of Victim Assistance Specialist opened in Atlanta, the supervisor and Assistant Special Agent in Charge approached Alia about the position. [19:00] Services available to those who have been victims of human trafficking Most of the time, Alia relies on the networks and resources she's built over the years that continue with the nonprofit world, direct service providers, child advocacy centers, and expands into the medical realm. Alia works with many medical professionals, such as behavioral health and substance abuse facilities.  Many faith-based communities are willing and eager to help the efforts by providing volunteers. Sometimes services look like anything from food banks to language access through English as a second language classes for an individual. [26:35] Staying motivated in difficult cases People ask Alia how she keeps from being depressed about such a heavy topic. She hangs on to the success stories because she knows people can escape their darkest days and walk into the light. There was one case that followed Alia as she moved from Tapestri to HSI. She saw the young lady go through the process and get the resources she needed to grow into a young lady doing exceptionally well. [30:03] The role of mobile forensics in human trafficking cases With the internet, there is, unfortunately, easier access to a variety of people. Many are recruited online through various means of social media. Social media with messaging, video, or photo capabilities are a breeding ground for trafficking and create an easier way for traffickers to infiltrate and start casual conversations with both adults and juveniles. Cell phones are a vital component of human trafficking investigations. Having the information on cell phones is the easiest way to unveil more of what's happening. [37:23] The future of fighting human trafficking Continue to raise awareness. As a country, the U.S. has come a long way in building awareness. Even globally, many strides have been taken to advance the fight. All sorts of legislation are being passed that help provide additional resources for the victims.  Dispelling human trafficking myths will help accurately detect what human trafficking is so more people can know what some of the red flags are and refer cases to help provide victims with the help they need. PBR Stock Contractor and former world champion Cord McCoy talks about the business of bulls ahead of this weekend's PBR event in Duluth.  Gwinnett County police are searching for a 19-year-old man who is wanted for a deadly shooting that happened in the early hours of Saturday morning. According to Corpora. Angela Carter, Miguel Rodriguez is wanted for felony murder and aggravated assault in the death of 45-year-old Felipe Velasco. Carter said police responded to a call on Fox Forest Ct. in Lilburn at about 12:40 a.m. and found Velasco inside the home suffering from a gunshot wound. Velasco was transported to the hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. Carter said Rodriquez is known to drive a Jeep wrangler with Georgia tag “XEG482.” She said a “domestic related” dispute led to the shooting. Police are asking anyone with information to share in the case, or who has information on Rodriguez's whereabouts, to contact Gwinnett detectives. When Peachtree Corners officials were approached in 2019 about the city participating in the federal Urban County program with its fellow Gwinnett cities and the county itself, they were given a few days to look at impact of participating versus not participating and make a decision. Without a whole lot of time to think it over, and without knowing the county would be impacted if the city did not participate, Peachtree Corners' leaders decided to pass on the offer. Flash forward to this past Tuesday and the situation was very different. The city's leaders, armed with new information from the county, are considering joining the program. Peachtree Corners is the only Gwinnett city — the only part of Gwinnett in fact — that does not participate in the Urban County program. The federal program is set up to help communities get HUD assistance grant funding. Gwinnett cities who opt to participate in the program with the county, as well as qualified residents who live in those cities, can apply to the county's HUD program for community development block grants. A qualified resident is a person who lives within a low-income census tract within a community. There are only two census tracts in Peachtree Corners that meet that criteria. Both tracts are in the southern part of the city, near the Gwinnett-DeKalb county line along the Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Buford Highway corridors. If a city does not participate in the program with the county, its qualified residents have to apply to the state for assistance. In that scenario, Peachtree Corners residents would have compete against a much larger pool of applicants from across Georgia, and they would therefore be less likely to get approved for help. One piece of information Peachtree Corners officials said they have now that they did not have in 2019 is the details on how not participating in the program affects Gwinnett County as a whole. County and city officials said Gwinnett is missing out on $350,000 per year by not having Peachtree Corners participate because of the population its inclusion adds. Gwinnett County residents who want to adopt a dog, or surrender a pooch they are no longer able to care for, from the county's animal shelter are out of luck — for now. County officials have stopped dog adoptions and intakes at the Bill Atkinson Animal Welfare Shelter in Lawrenceville until Jan. 19 because of a disease outbreak at the shelter. The situation at the shelter only affects dog adoptions and intakes, so people who want to adopt a cat can still do so at this time. Some dogs can also still be brought to the shelter for intake, but only if they are injured. The county is also allowing pet owners to come by and reclaim their lost pets, including lost dogs, at the shelter despite the suspension of dog adoptions. In the early years of the Hooper-Renwick School, events such as graduations, recitals and plays were like church affairs. That's in large part because those events were held in local churches because the school — which many African-American students in Gwinnett attended before desegregation of schools occurred in the 1960's — did not have facilities to host events when it was first built. Those kinds of spaces would not be available at the school itself until it was expanded in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Two churches in particular which supported the school were the old Mt. Calvary United Methodist Church and Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Lawrenceville. As work commences to turn the old Hooper-Renwick School into the Hooper-Renwick themed library, the city of Lawrenceville has secured several artifacts from Mt. Calvary's 1960 building on Neal Street for display in the library. The city saved the church's stained glass windows and pews. It also found items which had been placed inside a time capsule with the church's cornerstone. The items were removed before the church was torn down at the end of December. Among the items found inside the time capsule were a 1960 Hooper-Renwick graduation program, a copy of the program from the church's opening day celebrations and a copy of the new testament. Multiple Gwinnett County government and business leaders have been named among the most influential and notable people in the state by Georgia Trend magazine. Georgia Trend released its annual 100 Influential Georgians list, as well as its list of notable Georgians, this month. Among the people named Influential Georgians were Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson and Gwinnett Chamber President and CEO Nick Masino. Two other names included on the list were Hussey Gay Bell CEO and Chairman G. Holmes Bell IV, who was listed by Georgia Trend as being from Duluth, and Johnson R&D and JTEC Energy founder Lonnie Johnson, who was listed as being from Lilburn. The list of Influential Georgians recognizes people in the state who, according to Georgia Trend, “represents the best qualities of leadership, power, character and influence the state has to offer.” It includes a broad cross section of Georgians from government officials such as Governor Brian Kemp to business, healthcare, education and nonprofit leaders and even University of Georgia Head Football Coach Kirby Smart. There were also four Gwinnettians who made Georgia Trend's Notable Georgians list, which recognizes people who have made a significant contribution to the state. These Gwinnettians include: Atlanta Regional Commission Board Chairman Kerry Armstrong; Georgia Republican Party Chairman David Shafer; Partnership Gwinnett Vice-President of Economic Development Andrew Carnes; and American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia President and CEO Michael “Sully” Sullivan. In addition to the eight people from Gwinnett who made the Influential or Notable Georgians lists, there were some other people with ties to Gwinnett who were named among the state's most influential residents as well. Some of them lead hospital systems which have campuses or medical offices in Gwinnett while others are either state officials who live close to Gwinnett's borders and have been involved in projects in the county. One of them leads the company that has the naming rights to the Gas South District and has been involved in the county because of that. Welcome back to the She's Wild Podcast hosted by Nancy Surak! Today's guest is Sally Riker, partner at Lowe's Engineers. Sally has 25 years of experience in the A/E/C industry and was named by the Atlanta Business Chronicle in 2020 to their List of Women Who Mean Business. Sally was recognized as one of the most influential women in A/E/C in Georgia 2018-2022. She was named to the “40 under 40” list of leading professionals by Georgia Trend magazine and she was recently appointed to the Urban Land Institute's America's Women's Leadership Initiative Committee.Sally's career journey has been filled with success and she's long been recognized as a strong leader. She attributes her leadership skills to being involved in team sports in her youth and dives into the lessons she learned being a fast-pitch pitcher on her softball team. She is proud to be a woman in the STEM field and works to lift other women up in traditionally male dominated industries. Today's episode will leave you feeling empowered and ready to step outside of your comfort zone and into a position or career path you might be thinking about.Memorable Moments:4:50- When you're playing team sports, you learn early on how not only to lead but support, how to cheer others on. It's something where every person on the team is a critical component to your success. So it's the same thing here at work.7:29- So the biggest thing that I always tell people is to be responsive and communicate. That is one of the biggest things that will help a project or help a client understand where you are with the project. If you don't communicate with them, you're not responsive, or you don't pick up the phone, it lends to a lot of problems that perhaps you could have nipped in the bud, to begin with.12:18- I feel like it is so important, especially for women, to raise your hand, get involved in those leadership roles, don't just be a member or participate, really get involved. There are not enough women out there that get involved with nonprofit organizations, professional organizations that really raise their hand and say, “Hey, I want the opportunity to lead”.21:42- One thing that I have to say is women are strong, we're resilient. I feel very, very honored and privileged to be here at Lowe, I'm the only female partner.27:05- I really never thought I would be in a STEM field growing up; I thought I was going to be on Broadway or a news anchor or something like that, but, you know, it is possible.36:00- Put yourself in the arena, make yourself bigger, you know, and at the end of the day, it's you that counts. You're your own worst critic, and you're probably the one that holds holding yourself back in the long run.Connect with Nancy:Instagram: https://instagram.com/nancysurakLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nancysurak/Website: www.nancysurak.comConnect with Sally:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sally-riker-f-same-1b1a1943/Website: https://loweengineers.com/Sally's Book Recommendation:Daring Greatly Brene Brown via Amazon: https://amzn.to/3OAbK8TShe's WILD Sound production by:Luke Surak, Surak Productions: surakproductions@gmail.com

He is also currently the only Governor not to be re-elected since the law was changed to allow governors to fill two consecutive 4 year terms in 1974.  Barnes was the youngest member of the State Senate when he was elected at 26 and served from 1974-1990 from Mableton. During his tenure in the state senate, Barnes served floor leader to Governor Joe Frank Harris, and was appointed chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.  After running unsuccessfully for the nomination for Governor in 1990 - where he came in third in the primary to Zell Miller and Maynard Jackson - he served 6 years in the General Assembly from 1992-1998.  In 1998 he beat Republican Guy Milner 53-44 to become the 80th Governor of Georgia.  (Sidebar: This was Milner's third consecutive statewide race, in which he lost all three! He lost the Governor's race to Zell in 1994, the Senate to Max Cleland in 1996 and to Roy in 1998)  He was the most recent Democrat to be elected to The Governor's office, and the last in an unbroken string of members of the Democratic Party to hold the office dating back to The Civil War. He is also currently the only Governor not to be re-elected since the law was changed to allow governors to fill two consecutive 4 year terms in 1974.  As Governor, Barnes championed Ethics Reform, Education Reform and Transportation Funding, but his term has always been defined by the controversy surrounding Georgia's state flag. He accomplished something even Zell Miller couldn't, and removed the Confederate Battle Flag from Georgia's State Flag (officially the 1956 flag). Voters punished him dearly for it in 2002, though larger structural issues and party realignment, especially below the gnat line, played a large part in the 02 election.  According to the February 2004 issue of Georgia Trend, "Democrat Roy Barnes was one of the most powerful governors in history. His nickname 'King Roy' was an affectionate term accorded him by supporters because he knew how to pull the levers and make things happen in the legislature." In 2003 he was awarded the John F.
