This week, we sit down with glass-ceiling smasher, corporate and nonprofit leader, Atlanta booster, storyteller, mentor, mother and grandmother, community organizer, and woman of the hour Hala Moddelmog. Hala is a fellow Atlantian, spending nearly her entire career in this southeastern metropolis. Shout out for the home team! Hala is currently the President and CEO of the Woodruff Arts Center in downtown Atlanta. She has spent nearly 30 years in President and CEO roles from Metro Atlanta Chamber to Arby's Restaurant Group to Susan G. Komen - and more. Needless to say, ain't no mountain high enough! In our 30-minute conversation, Hala shares her story of “having it all,” her unwavering commitment to the Atlanta community, her experience with storytelling and art as mechanisms for learning and change, and her incredible take on how to invest in others “doing the work.” Hala was among the first to join the I AM 111 to support the “making of” the I AM Series. In this episode, we ask Hala why she joined, and she surprised us with the most authentic and powerful answer!“I saw two women putting everything on the line to do something important, and I thought sign me up! Let me be a little bit a part of this.” We won't give it all away, but the TL;DR is: If you can show up for others in the “arena,” do.Hala describes her experience being part of a generation that had to break proverbial glass ceilings, and how she and her fellow “glass shatterers” won't stop because it's just not fixed yet! And finally, the pièce de résistance, and our real takeaway from this conversation… The art of shattering that glass isn't just in its breaking, it's in turning around and offering a helping hand to those that follow with hammers. Mic drop.

Break 1: Peggy Slappey STORY 1: History comes alive at Georgia Gwinnett College with ancient tools demonstration The Arctos Anthropology Club at Georgia Gwinnett College had a demonstration by primitive-living expert Andrew Minnick, who showcased tool-making technologies from the Stone Ages and the pre-contact period in the Americas. Students had the opportunity to learn about ancient tools and try their hand at making them. They explored tools like the Atlatl for hunting and engaged in "flint knapping" to shape stones into tools and decorative pieces. The experience emphasized the sophistication of early human problem-solving and highlighted the importance of preserving knowledge about ancient technologies and their impact on human evolution, history, and culture. STORY 2: Editorial: Sidney Powell should turn in her Texas bar card Sidney Powell, the former lawyer for Donald Trump, pleaded guilty to six reduced criminal charges in Georgia stemming from her efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. However, in Dallas, she continues to fight a disciplinary lawsuit filed by the State Bar of Texas, which accuses her of violating ethics rules by filing frivolous voter fraud lawsuits in multiple states. In a recent filing, Powell claims the bar lacks evidence to support its case. The editorial calls for her to surrender her Texas bar card and be consistent in her actions, arguing that Powell's conspiracy theories have been discredited, and her legal fight is a waste of taxpayer money. STORY 3: Renova Technology Adding 30 Jobs After $600,000 Expansion In Norcross Renova Technology Inc., an after-market repair services company, celebrated the grand opening of its expanded facility in Norcross, Gwinnett County. And nature is pushing that along Dams in the American West are being removed to address their declining power output, environmental damage, and the maintenance challenges they pose. The removal of dams in places like the Klamath River near the California-Oregon border is part of a trend that has seen more than 1,600 dams removed in the U.S. since 1912. Dams have outlived their usefulness, and their removal is seen as a step toward rewilding America. The Klamath River's dams were initially built for power generation, but they generated less than 2% of the power supplied by their utility in recent years. The Klamath restoration also involves partnerships with Native American communities to assert ancestral rights and promote river health. STORY 5: Simple diet changes can improve health and reduce carbon emissions: study A new study suggests that making simple diet swaps, such as switching from beef to chicken or using plant-based milk instead of cow's milk, can reduce the average carbon footprint of food by 35% and improve the nutritional quality of diets. The research, based on the analysis of diet data from over 7,700 Americans, encourages climate-friendly eating habits to cut carbon emissions from food production, which accounts for a significant portion of greenhouse gas emissions. The study recommends easily achievable dietary substitutions to promote both environmental sustainability and personal health, emphasizing the potential of small changes to have a significant impact on both fronts. We'll be back in a moment Break 3: ESOG – INGLES 10 STORY 6: It takes the average parent this long to get their kids to fall asleep A study of 1,000 parents with kids aged 0-8 has found that it takes an average of an hour to get each child to sleep every night. Nearly 80% of parents have to read up to three bedtime stories before their children settle down. More than 60% of parents struggle to get their kids to sleep, with many resorting to stalling tactics like asking questions (31%), needing to find a special toy (23%), feeling too hot or cold (29%), claiming to be scared of the dark (25%), or hearing strange noises (17%). Some even claim there's a monster under the bed (19%). The research was commissioned by the children's TV show Hey Duggee to mark the launch of its new Sleepy Time bedtime toy. STORY 7: 'Lawrenceville Blooms' mural completed The city of Lawrenceville, Georgia, has unveiled its completed community mural, named "Lawrenceville Blooms." This mural project was a collaborative effort between the Lawrenceville Arts Commission and local artist Teresa Abboud. Republicans framed their bill as a conservative approach to election integrity and criticized the Democrats' John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act as a federal takeover of voting. The Republican bill would incentivize states to adopt the proposed reforms and potentially withhold federal funds for non-compliance. Democrats argued against the GOP bill, stating that there was no widespread voter fraud in Georgia and criticizing the previous election reform measure for its limitations on drop boxes and challenges to voters. The hearing coincided with the second anniversary of Major League Baseball's decision to move the All-Star Game from Atlanta in response to the passage of Georgia's Senate Bill 202. Story 5: art The Hudgens Center for the Arts in Duluth has been running the smART Honors Scholarship Program for Gwinnett's young artists since 2004. This year, 19 high school juniors from various Gwinnett County public high schools participated in the program. The program, free to nominated students, provides intensive arts education and supplies all art materials. Students attend Saturday morning art sessions and work with professional artists to develop their skills and create a body of work. The program aims to enhance problem-solving, critical thinking, and creative skills while fostering leadership, confidence, discipline, and work ethic. The current exhibition showcases the artwork of the Class of 2023 and runs until July 29 at the Hudgens Center. Story 6: recession According to the Metro Atlanta Chamber's chief economist, the economy could experience a mild recession by the end of the year. However, it is still possible to avoid one. Major banks have been predicting a recession, but the exact timing is uncertain. Economic forecasters suggest that the scale of the recession would not be as severe as the Great Recession. Factors that could contribute to a recession include rising interest rates and the resumption of student loan payments. Georgia is better positioned to weather a recession compared to other states due to sustained job growth. The state's strong economy, job creation, and business-friendly environment contribute to its resilience. We'll be back in a moment Break 3: ESOG – Ingles 9- Ag Pro 30 Story 7: aaron The Atlanta Braves will honor the late Hank Aaron during Hank Aaron Week, which will take place from July 25-30. The week will feature community-building initiatives and culminate in celebrations at Truist Park during the Braves' game against the Milwaukee Brewers on July 28. Additionally, the Hank Aaron Invitational showcase game will be held on July 30, featuring the top 200 high school-aged players from across the United States. The Braves will pay tribute to Aaron's impact as a player, executive, and entrepreneur with special pre-game and in-game content. Proceeds from the Atlanta Braves Foundation's 50/50 Raffle during the weekend series will support the Henry Louis Aaron Fund, promoting diversity in baseball. Story 8: All Star Atlanta is being considered as a potential host for the 2025 All-Star Game, according to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. This comes after the city lost the opportunity to host the 2021 game due to controversy surrounding Georgia's voting laws. Truist Park, is being considered as a potential venue for the 2025 game. Other sites under consideration include Wrigley Field in Chicago and Fenway Park in Boston. Atlanta has previously hosted the All-Star Game in 1972 and 2000. The 2022 game will be hosted by the Texas Rangers, and the 2026 game will coincide with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. Story 9: Wilkins Isaiah Wilkins, a Greater Atlanta Christian graduate, has been promoted to assistant coach of the University of Virginia men's basketball program. Wilkins previously served as a graduate assistant at Virginia for the past two seasons. As a player, he had a successful career at Virginia, helping the team achieve multiple accomplishments, including ACC titles and NCAA tournament appearances. He was recognized as the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2018. After college, Wilkins played professionally in Europe and New Zealand, as well as in the NBA G League. He has been involved in player development, scouting, recruiting, and video analysis during his time on the coaching staff. Wilkins holds an undergraduate degree from UVA and recently completed his master's degree in higher education. In this episode, we sit with Chrissa McFarlane, the creator of Patientory. Chrissa joins the show to discuss the backstory behind her patient care app. With a background in emergent health, including managing a telemedicine company and consulting for pharma and EMRs, Chrissa was driven to create Patientory from the pain point of building the insurance side of the telemedicine company, as there was not a lot of consumer focus when it came to patient records. Patientory was born from the need for an easier, more organized system for patient records, and it revolutionized the healthcare industry by connecting patients with doctors over an app. The conversation also delves into the need for consumer-friendly access to medical records, highlighting the difficulty that parents faced when trying to access their child's medical records through traditional methods. Patientory solves this problem by providing a digital health data wallet that allows users to access and manage their medical records from anywhere, making it easier for patients to keep track of their health data and stay on top of their healthcare needs. What sets Patientory apart is its incorporation of blockchain and cryptocurrency, which allows patients to have control over their health data and potentially monetize it through a marketplace ecosystem. Additionally, Patientory provides rewards for users who take steps to improve their health, such as walking a certain number of steps. These rewards can come in the form of a crypto token, NFTs, or other forms of incentives, incentivizing users to stay active and engaged in their healthcare. A Doraville police officer has been arrested in connection with the death of a 16-year-old Norcross teen whose body was found off State Route 316 last week. Gwinnett County police are still investigating how Susana Morales died. She went missing last July while walking home and her body was found near the Gwinnett-Barrow county line on February 6. Gwinnett law enforcement officials have not released details of how Doraville Police Officer Miles Bryant was involved in the Morales case. He has not been charged with killing Morales, but he has been charged with false report of a crime and concealing the death of another. Bryant is a Norcross resident, according to Gwinnett County police. Doraville police said they were notified on Monday afternoon that arrest warrants would be served against Bryant. Doraville officials said Bryant is no longer employed by the city's police department. A new bill would prohibit transgender Georgians under 18 from receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy or surgery. The Bill's main sponsor is Senator Clint Dixon, a Republican from Gwinnett County. The eight-page bill includes a long list of procedures that would be barred, including gender-affirming hormone therapy and surgical procedures. The legislation includes some exceptions, including for people who are “born with a medically verifiable disorder of sex development” and for the treatment of “a physical disorder … injury … or illness that is certified by a physician.” A physician who provides any of the services to a person under 18 would be considered to have committed “unprofessional conduct” and would be subject to discipline by their licensing board. The bill would also require school employees to inform parents if their child is transgender. Medical groups, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, support gender-affirming care for transgender children when the physician and family deem it appropriate. One unintended consequence of the bill could be the prohibition of circumcision, said state Senator Kim Jackson, a Democrat from Stone Mountain. That's because the bill includes a provision that would prohibit the removal of “any healthy or nondiseased body part or tissue.” Circumcision is a common practice and is a required or strongly encouraged in some religions, including Judaism and Islam. A statue of Martin Luther King Jr. that will be featured at the Rodney Cook Sr. Peace Park will reside in Atlanta, but it has major Gwinnett County connections. Local philanthropists Clyde and Sandra Strickland are helping fund the statue — which will depict Dr. King in a pastor's robe and holding an open Bible — and longtime Gwinnett artist Kathy Fincher is one of the sculptors. Fincher and the Stricklands are lifetime friends, and their collaboration on the MLK statue was born out of a mutual desire to depict the civil rights leader in a way he had not been previously shown. Kathy Fincher wanted to emphasize the role faith played in Dr. King's life. That's why she wanted to show him in a pastor's robe, looking upward while delivering his famous "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech, which was also the wish of the National Monument Foundation. The sculpture, which she is working on with Athens artist Stan Mullin, also shows a Bible open to scripture about Moses. The statue will be unveiled on April 1 followed by a World Peace Revival "Peace Walk." Clyde Strickland said the sculpture will not only make its mark on that day, but for decades to come. Legislation introduced into the Georgia House of Representatives Monday marks the latest effort to legalize sports betting in Georgia. House Bill 380, sponsored by state Representative Marcus Wiedower, a Republican from Watkinsville, is being supported by the Metro Atlanta Chamber. Like sports betting legislation floated in past years in the General Assembly, Wiedower's bill calls for sports betting to be overseen by the Georgia Lottery Corp. Unlike previous sports betting bills, the new measure would allow for two types of sports betting licenses. It calls for awarding up to 16 Type 1 licenses to companies that would provide online sports betting services. A second variety of licenses – known as Type 2 – would go to brick-and-mortar businesses in Georgia that would offer in-person sports betting. Sports betting legislation in past years has been limited strictly to online betting. Licensees would pay 15% of their adjusted gross incomes to the state in the form of a “privilege tax” that would be set aside to help fund education in Georgia. The bill sets out penalties for violators and includes provisions requiring companies involved in sports betting to offer programs to help problem gamblers. North Gwinnett Middle School orchestra teacher Sarah Ball has been honored with the 2023 Elizabeth A. H. Green School Educator Award. According to Gwinnett County Public Schools officials, Ball earned the recognition "for her profound impact on string education in her community, state, and beyond." The honor is a national award presented annually by the American String Teachers Association to one school string teacher with a current and distinguished career in a school orchestral setting. From her award nomination letter, her co-teacher Amy Clement stated, “… she is a passionate music educator who enjoys sharing her love of teaching with others. She has recruited countless numbers of students, mentored many student teachers, inspired hundreds of music educators, and of the highest compliment, she has even had several former students become orchestra teachers to follow in her footsteps.” As a creative mind and innovative advocate for string education, Ball has connected, inspired, taught, coached, and developed current and future generations of string students and teachers. According to GCPS officials, Ball has not only been a leader in Gwinnett County schools "but also shared her light beyond her school district with incomparable engagement and motivational strategies in state, local, regional, and national presentations, and guest clinician performances. Her service to the profession is greatly valued and appreciated." The award reviewers also noted these activities as incredibly influential – including serving as GMEA orchestra division chair, as Georgia ASTA president, and as a member-at-large on the national ASTA board. The impact that she has made in guest conducting roles not only influences those students in the ensembles, but also their teachers and families. Ball will receive the award during a presentation at the national conference in Orlando in March. Cherokee Bluff already knew Seckinger wasn't an ordinary first-year boys basketball program after the regular season meeting between the two teams in December. In case the host Bears had forgotten, however, the Jaguars gave them a reminder during their Region 8-AAAA Tournament quarterfinal Monday night at Cherokee Bluff. Seckinger got balanced scoring and held off multiple Cherokee Bluff attempts at a rally to earn the program's first state tournament bid with a 65-54 victory. Carter Watkins led Seckinger with 15 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, but had plenty of help, with three other players in double figures and a fourth nearly joining them. That total team effort not only put the Jaguars in the state tournament, it also moved them into the region semifinals, where they will take on Number 4 state-ranked Madison County on Thursday night. Introduction: Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes. My name is Jon Birdsong and I'm with Atlanta Ventures. Beta Product of the Week: This week's Beta Product of the week is led by serial entrepreneur, David Moeller. The name of his company is called Keep Technologies and their main product is called Knight. If you live in a major city, car break-ins are a dime a dozen. Keep Technologies has built a hardware product that sits in a cup holder and does everything from deterring thieves from approaching the vehicle, to record video of the crime, to notify the owner, and provide continual monitoring after the break-in. Knight's design is simple with a natural logo - a chess knight – and the pre-orders are racking up. Keep an eye out for Keep Technologies. Link in bio. Companies Worth Applying To: An exciting opportunity in the construction software space has opened up. RedTeam headquartered in Orlando, which recently acquired paskr out of Nashville, is looking for a VP of Sales. I remember speaking to the founder of paskr years ago and remembering how good their product was and solving a deep and validated need in the market – and most of the sales then were founder-led. Now through an acquisition and growth capital provided by Braemont Capital, RedTeam is ready to step on the gas with the addition of a talented and experienced VP of Sales. This role is remote and a superb opportunity to take a strong product to market. Another company worth applying to is also out of Nashville and this company is called Lasso. Angela Alea is the President and CRO. Lasso's software helps run live events. Their customers produce events including the Super Bowl, The Oscars, The Grammys, Dreamforce, and more by offering 6 different products that unify event staff management tasks into one easy workflow via scheduling, communication, onboarding, time tracking, and more. They were on this year's Inc 5000 list and looking for a VP of Sales, Engineering talent, Dev Ops and more. Events to Put on the Calendar: I know we're only in September but what better time to start planning for October as it is a very busy one in Atlanta. The Metro Atlanta Chamber put together a good list of several keystone events including Venture Atlanta, Fintech South, A3C, TechStars Demo Day, and much more. We put a link to the list. Pick and choose as there are plenty of great options. Question of the Week: Can entrepreneurs be made? This is a topic we discuss a lot out of Atlanta Ventures and with our friends. Here's my take: entrepreneurship levels are on a continuum, almost no different than athletes. Can athletes be made? Sure. Are some predisposed to winning championships because of natural God-given ability? Absolutely. However, when we hone in on entrepreneurs, I believe there are thousands who would go start a company if the mechanisms were there. For example, this past weekend, I spent all weekend with a new friend from Nashville. He is one of the top sales reps at a large enterprise SaaS company, does very well, yet in addition to trouncing quota, he has several AirBnB's, a side blog on food, traditional real estate, and a few other entrepreneurial outlets. So he is already an athlete, he is already an entrepreneur. Now the question resides with every person who wants to build a company or any athlete pursuing a sport, how much sacrifice and commitment is one willing to make to achieve their ambitions. So now we just brought in three other factors: ambition (which is a huge one), commitment, and sacrifice. If you are a top sales rep or performer, it doesn't have to be in sales, at a premier SaaS company, and you have the itch to start something, those are all factors weighing in on your decision to startup something. Fortunately in today's environment, where companies are started quickly in thousands of niche markets, there are several options than traditional routes. More on that in due time! Annnnd, that's 5 minutes. Thank you for listening to Five and Thrive. We provide 5 minutes of quality information, so you can thrive in the upcoming week. Please subscribe to the show and spread the good word! He served on the Bank's Personnel, Information Technology, and Risk Management Committees and as a member of the Federal Reserve System's Information Security Group and Technology Services Council. Topics to Discuss: National Employment Situation report contains some solid numbers, but mixed headlines. The solid numbers are in job gains, where the nation added 213,000 jobs, well above the market expectation of around 190,000. Revisions to the two previous months added another 37,000 jobs. The mixed part of the report is that the headline is the unemployment rate (U3) ticked up from 3.8% to 4.0%. The expectation was for no change. This was mostly due to an increase in the labor force participation, which moved up 0.2 percentage points after being essentially unchanged since February. At this point the economy needs the additional workers, so this is a fundamentally good thing. The broader measure of labor underutilization (U6) also rose 0.2 percentage points to 7.8%. Average hourly earnings rose 2.7% from a year ago, slightly below expectations, but about in line with recent history. Jobs gains were led by professional and business services, followed by manufacturing, which had a solid 30,000 job addition, mostly in durable goods. Strength was also seen in health care, construction, and mining. Retail was the only sector with a notable loss of jobs (-22,000), but that did not offset last month's gain of 25,000. Other sectors were essentially unchanged. All in all, a pretty good report, despite an easily misinterpreted rise in unemployment. Grant Wainscott is the Vice President of Ecosystem Expansion at the Metro Atlanta Chamber. Grant leads a team of professional global economic developers to retain, expand, and attract new jobs and investment to the metro Atlanta region. Grant is a seasoned global executive with over 20 years of experience in economic and community development, organizational development, and cross-border initiatives and partnerships. Previously, Grant was the Director of the Office of Economic Development and Film for the Clayton County Board of Commissioners, the Director of Economic Development for the City of Morrow, and the Vice President of Community and Economic Development for the Clayton County Chamber of Commerce. In this episode… The city of Atlanta is many things to many people, but it's increasingly becoming known for one thing in the technology world: cybersecurity. So, how has Atlanta grown into the cybersecurity hub it is today? Grant Wainscott, a member of the Metro Atlanta Chamber, says you can't grow a region without amazing partners. It's not just the businesses that are forging the city — it's the market makers, the market movers, and the people that can help tell Atlanta's story. In order to make a region their hub, companies want transparency from the experts — the good, the bad, and the ugly — and the Metro Atlanta Chamber and other specialists in the cybersecurity space are doing just that. In this episode of She Said Privacy/He Said Security, Jodi and Justin Daniels sit down with Grant Wainscott, Vice President of Ecosystem Expansion for the Metro Atlanta Chamber, to discuss how Atlanta has become a focal point for cybersecurity companies. Grant talks about how the city's cybersecurity efforts have changed over the last few years, his predictions for its future technology ecosystem, and why community is the key to building better collaboration between the cybersecurity and privacy spaces.
Of all the things minority-owned business might want, getting on the radar screen of a large enterprise is pretty near the top of the list. And yet, given the realities of modern business, without a little support from specialized organizations, that opportunity might never come to pass. In this episode of the #SupplyChainCity series, which features big business leaders based in Supply Chain Now's home city of Atlanta, we hear two leaders speaking about the efforts being made to help minority-owned businesses connect with large companies who appreciate the value they bring. Stacey Key is the President and CEO of the Georgia Minority Supplier Development Council (GMSDC), and George Richter is the Senior Vice President of Supply Chain Management at Cox Communications. Cox Communications was one of the founding members of the GMSDC in 1976 and remains a strong supporter of the diversity movement to this day. To better understand the progress that has been made over the last 45 years and the work that remains to be done, Co-hosts Scott Luton and Ben Harris, Director of Supply Chain Ecosystem Expansion for the Metro Atlanta Chamber, interview Stacey and George about: • What it means to be a small and/or diversity owned business, and why certifications play an important part in the diversity movement • Why accountability is just as important as intent in supplier diversity • The steps that large corporations need to take today to have the desired economic impact in communities of color Additional Links & Resources: Learn more about Supply Chain Now: https://supplychainnow.com/program/supply-chain-now Subscribe to Supply Chain Now and all other Supply Chain Now programs: https://supplychainnow.com/subscribe (https://supplychainnow.com/subscribe) Register for the 6 River Systems FLOW 2021: https://bit.ly/2YO8Too (https://bit.ly/2YO8Too) Register for the OMNIA Partners Connections Conference: https://bit.ly/3jHlwdv (https://bit.ly/3jHlwdv) WEBINAR- State of the Supply Chain Report – Priorities for Building Resiliency in Your Supply Network: https://bit.ly/2XIRZHf (https://bit.ly/2XIRZHf) Download the 2021 Q2 U.S. Bank Freight Payment Index: https://bit.ly/3f1LO6S (https://bit.ly/3f1LO6S) This episode was hosted by Scott Luton and Ben Harris. Glen Gould began his career at the age of 11 working for a catering company more years ago than he'd like to admit. At 13 he took his first “real” job working at Dairy Queen and progressed to night manager at Taco Tico at age 15. Following his dream of being a professional golfer, Glen worked at world-class resorts including The Tournament Players' Club at Sawgrass where he learned first-hand how to treat customers. It was during his time as a Golf Professional that Glen began to truly study successful people and organizations with the intention of learning what they do, how they do it, and replicating their results. Using what he learned about how successful people connect, Glen became the president of the Punta Gorda (FL) Chamber of Commerce and later the Director of Small to Midsized Business at the Metro Atlanta Chamber. He concluded his chamber career at the Newnan-Coweta Chamber (2015 Small Chamber of the Year). He's started four multi-million-dollar enterprises from the ground up and is a partner in Dry Cleaning Connection with his wife Tammy and sons Grant and Carson. He's authored four books including Meet Me at Starbucks and 101 Networking Nuggets. He's also failed more times than most people try, learning more from his failures than from his successes. Today Glen inspires audiences to achieve more through entertaining and thought-provoking talks that include role-playing, interaction, and sometimes just plain fun. You can connect with Glen and find out more about Dry Cleaning Connection at drycleaningconnetion.com or contact Glen via email at glen@drycleaningconnection.com. A global economic slowdown due to the coronavirus has greatly affected the recruitment industry. What type of “proactive” mindset should a recruiter possess in order to avoid just being “reactive” to the situation? How do you build your business despite economic challenges? In this episode of the Resilient Recruiter, my special guest, Christy Brown shares her story on how she built a company in 2007, yes, you read it right, during the great recession. Listen to how creativity, technology enablement, and being agile helped her build, scale, and sell her staffing companies. Christy is a serial entrepreneur, investor, startup advisor, mentor, founder, futurist, triathlete. Prior to becoming a Venture Capitalist, Christy was the Executive Vice President of a Fortune 100 human capital management software company where she led the business transformation and client success organizations globally. Christy has scaled three service-based companies focused on digital marketing, human capital, and security consulting. Episode Outline and Highlights [3:00] A former IRONMAN competitor, Christy shared how her competing translates to business. [6:00] Christy's staffing journey. [8:40] What it was like to start a staffing firm during the recession. [10:00] Christy's two learnings that lead to improvement and innovation. [44:00] Listen to Christy's “regret” from a founder's perspective. [47:02] Two practical ideas to navigate this challenging economy [53:00] Christy's view on inclusion and women empowerment Starting a Business During the Great Recession Back in 2007, Christy started her own staffing firm. It may not have been the best time to start a new business, and as she mentioned, “For me, it became a firefight.” Comparing the situation before with what we are facing now, this is how she puts it “It was a very interesting time, we can compare it to some of the things that are happening in this current healthcare crisis today. Massive fallouts to the economy occurring, a large banking crisis that we are still coming out of.” Despite the situation, Christy focused on the opportunity being presented to build her business. Christy laid out her mistakes and learnings, her business model, and the factors that led to her start-up success. Technology Will Drive the Future of the Recruiting Industry Christy gave her take on “technology enablement” and how technology will drive the future of the recruiting industry. As she puts it, “I think technology enablement and recruiting is probably the number one growth area that I look even from an investment lens. It is one of those things that has to grow, it has to accelerate, and we have to influence it.” Listen to her philosophy on how utilizing technology will help recruiters stay relevant. Inclusion and Woman Empowerment One of the biggest challenges Christy faced is, “Sometimes, being the only female in the room of technologists.” Hear her meaningful thoughts about inclusion and women empowerment in a corporate setting. Christy Brown Bio and Contact Info Christy has held a number of executive leadership roles over the past 20 years but in 2019, became the Managing Executive Partner of a venture capital firm focused on pairing venture capital with shared services in a studio environment to scale rapidly with services to support early-stage startups. On this weeks episode of Culturation™ we speak with the “Change Agent”, Kate Atwood. We discuss overcoming adversity, leadership with love and being the change. Kate was 12 years old when her mother passed away after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. Twelve years later she founded Kate’s Club, a nationally-acclaimed not-for-profit organization that provides support to children and teens facing life after the death of a parent or sibling. Recognizing first-hand the importance of support after such a life changing event, Kate’s vision was to build a place for grieving children to have fun, develop friendships, and learn to cope with their loss. What started in the summer of 2003 at a bowling alley with just eight kids is today an organization that has served thousands of children and their families through year-round social and emotional support programs. Her first book, entitled “A Healing Place: Help Your Child Find Hope and Happiness after the Loss of a Loved One” was released by Penguin Books. Following a successful founder transition in 2010, Kate went on to serve as the Executive Director of the Arby’s Foundation. While at the helm of the Arby’s Foundation, Kate refocused its efforts on a new strategic mission that more closely aligned with the Arby’s brand and helped the organization contribute more than $18 million to ending childhood hunger in the United States. In September 2015, Kate joined the Metro Atlanta Chamber, as Vice President of Marketing, to lead the recently launched ChooseATL initiative. In this newly created role, Kate is responsible for focusing the region’s narrative to showcase all that metro Atlanta has to offer with the purpose to attract and retain top talent. Kate has participated in her fair share of media along the way. She has been featured in People Magazine, Real Simple Magazine, Marie Claire Magazine, Huffington Post, and has had appearances on the Today Show, the Meredith Vieira Show, CNN, and ABC-TV’s The View. She was recognized in the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s feature “Up and Comers: Top 40 under 40”, and was honored by Georgia Trend Magazine as one of Georgia’s “40 under 40.” In 2013, she was named to GOOD Magazine’s global “GOOD 100” list for her commitment to helping others. Kate has been featured in six books as a thought-leader on personal giving and social entrepreneurship. #KateAtwood #Culturation #PoweredByPremier #Entrepreneur #NonProfit #Atlanta #WeAreATL #Innovation #JustinEpstein
They say that civilization advances by extending the number of important things we can do without thinking about them. To me, that's the promise of technology and it's particularly true when it comes to artificial intelligence and machine learning. Still, not everyone sees it that way. Some worry that they'll be replaced. Others take offense to the fact that they're seen as replaceable. But just like the rise of ATMs led to an INCREASE in the number of bank tellers, we'll see AI drive unpredictable, and generally positive change in the healthcare industry. Some will be displaced, but if they're open to it they'll be in a position to take on new and even more valuable roles that we can't even imagine today. Side note: AI may just help us deal with the projected doctor shortage. I know what you're thinking: That's big talk from an industry that recently gave you the EMR. That's fair, but there is a way to do this right. And that's what we're going to talk about today. Today's guests are Shahid Shah (usually co-host, but today I'm calling him a guest) and Dr. Chesley Richards, CDC Deputy Director for Public Health Scientific Services. Together we'll discuss the rapid pace of technological change in healthcare and what that means for doctors, vendors and patients. We'll show you how AI will complement and enhance the capabilities of today's clinicians and allow them to focus on keeping us healthy. We'll show you how technology, when its properly deployed and used, can be incredibly effective. And perhaps, most importantly, we'll tell you why listening is the starting point and potentially the most important thing you can do to ensure this all goes well. An overview of The Health IT Leadership Summit w/ Jody Braner and an introduction to today's podcast guests (0:00 - 10:20) Given all the advances in technology such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Predictive Analytics, Precision Medicine, etc. will doctors have jobs in 10 years? (11:10) Similarly, what will HealthIT vendors be working on in 10 years? (20:30) Looking at vaccines as technology, and applying that technology intelligently and in a way that was designed to work in specific communities and regions allowed us to eradicate diseases like Smallpox (29:38) How can tech vendors realign themselves to support the goal of cures instead of focusing on disease management and administration? (32:00) What hurdles do we have to get over so that collectively we're getting back to our focus on cures over just treatment? (35:15) Why does population health matter? (38:00) Let's discuss the dangers of technology and how it can adversely impact the delivery of care when it's not properly deployed and used. (41:00) We often think of technology as a way to digitize and automate what I do today. Why don't we take the opportunity to ask what we can do better? What can we stop doing altogether? (43:00) How can we power all of this in new ways with data? (47:35) How can the CDC and other organizations open up more data for public experimentation? (52:00) What new workforce needs or changes will emerge in healthcare in the coming years? (56:00) We can use data to cut down on the time from idea thru randomized trial to approval of new drugs - today that might take up to 17 years!!!! (1:01:35) This is a very engaging and insightful conversation, and one I know will make you think about a few things differently. I can honestly say that I loved listening to the final product and I believe you will too. Enjoy! ~ Don Lee About Chesley Richards and CDC Chesley Richards M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P. is Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Deputy Director for Public Health Scientific Services as well as Director, Office of Public Health Scientific Services.
