The Buddhist canon is filled with pithy teachings from and stories about Buddha. Many of the sutras, where Buddha gives profound answers to questions posed by his students have become very well known, even outside Buddhist circles. Lesser known to modern practitioners, are the stories that lead to the guidelines that support monastic practitioners on the path to awakening. In particular, there are many stories about his students misbehaving and how the Buddha was able to turn these situations into opportunities for progressing on the path . These stories became a list of guidelines and precepts, referred to as the Vinaya. In today's episode, we will focus on some of the stories about nuns that are largely unknown to modern day meditators. Dr. Annie Heckman, an expert in the field, and Erric Solomon explore how these stories have enabled Buddhist practitioners' realization and continue to inform us in today's the modern world.  Dr. Annie Heckman Associate Translator, 84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha Born in Chicago, Annie Heckman is an Associate Translator for 84000 whose research focuses on stories about nuns in the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya, with an emphasis on fourteenth-century Tibetan editorial and digesting practices. Pablo Picasso once said “Every child is an artist; the problem is staying an artist when you grow up.” On this episode of the N&H Podcast my special guest Dominic Quagliozzi talks about his experience creating art that started from childhood while he was hospitalized with Cystic Fibrosis. We also talk about the importance Art in healthcare where Dominic will share his experience of creating art from illness which has guided him into a career as an artist. Through various media, with a focus on drawing, painting and performance, Dominic Quagliozzi's work merges his lived experience as a person with chronic illness and disability into art. Using medical materials common to hospitals, clinics and home healthcare; hospital gowns, IV tubing, clinic table tissue paper, to name a few, Quagliozzi hints at the presence of a body past, present and future within health care systems and sick-well-sick-well cycles. By repurposing and re-coding medical materials as art making materials, he explores the emotional and psychological space in those moments of vulnerability, anxiety, fragility and resilience. Parallel to his art practice, Dominic uses art as a method of teaching for medical students and health workers. Quagliozzi received an MFA in Studio Arts from Cal State University, Los Angeles and a BA in Sociology from Providence College. His work is in the permanent collection at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum and a collaborative work in the permanent collection at Museum of Latin American Art, in Long Beach, CA. He has exhibited work in Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Providence and Denmark. In 2018, he was on the Keynote patient panel at the Nexus Summit for interprofessional care and education at the University of Minnesota. Addressing this disproportionate impact on students is critical because bullying increases the likelihood of developing mental health needs such as depression and anxiety. Today's episode addresses a fundamental question: How can we tackle the behavioral health needs of young students to ensure they receive the proper attention and have opportunities for the most growth? DisruptED's host Ron J. And he's right. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, “Eighty-seven percent of public schools agreed or strongly agreed that the pandemic has negatively impacted student socio-emotional development.”McCoy explains to our listeners that “what we see coming out of it are the impacts of kindergarten through second graders that weren't in a classroom, that didn't have that fundamental behavioral training--because that's what kindergarten is.”Join the conversation as Stefanski and McCoy discuss:How McCoy's career path led to his position at Invo Healthcare. How the pandemic and view of the teaching profession influenced how bullying is addressed by educators. How Invo Healthcare is tackling teacher and school training to help address school bullyingMcCoy states that his organizations work is “about empowering those [who are] bullied with the right tools but also wrapping [our arms] around those people that are bullying others and saying, ‘This is not the normal way that humans engage with each other on a very fundamental level and also to be able to empower staff to have those conversations, to set up the school and to reduce it in society in general.”Will McCoy is Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at Invo Healthcare. In this episode, Katherine McLeod of ShortCuts and Kelly Cubbon, transcriber of The SpokenWeb Podcast, explore the role of transcription in the making of podcasts and how responsible transcription unfolds through collaboration and conversation. In fact, their episode uncovers just how much transcription is collaboration and conversation.Part One starts with reflections from Katherine and Kelly about how they came to the work of transcription and key concepts that have influenced their thinking throughout the process of making this episode, such as accessibility and ableism. This section also features an interview with Dr. Maya Rae Oppenheimer, a studio arts professor at Concordia University and a regular user of podcast transcripts.Part Two consists of an interview with Judith Burr, the Season 3 SpokenWeb Podcast supervising producer and project manager, about generative challenges that have come up during collaboration on podcast transcription for the podcast and how decision making has evolved over time. And Part Three is an interview with Bára Hladík, a poet, writer, and multimedia artist, about  the convergence of disability, accessibility, technology, and poetics.    Raised in Berlin, Charlene Mosley is an Oscar-nominated, San Diego- based fine artist, illustrator, concept artist and muralist. She received her BA in Studio Arts from San Diego State University with a minor in German Studies.   Charlene's current work portrays figures and faces of various backgrounds immersed in organic natural elements such as plants and animals. She uses vibrant expressive brushstrokes to bring the paintings to life mainly in oils, watercolors, ink and gouache. She has recently started exploring miniature scenery paintings of her travels as well. Her work expresses her observations of current matters and experiences living in a 21st century media driven society and its relationship to nature.   In 2016, Mosley was one of the contributing artists of “Loving Vincent“, the first ever fully-painted, Oscar-Nominated feature film. This opportunity was the artist's first time working in animation in Poland. Creating over 250 frames of the film while in Poland “was life changing in a way, and a motivation to keep pursuing my passion as an independent artist”, notes Mosley. During the promotional touring and award ceremonies following the films debut in the US, Charlene had gotten to work closely with the Royal Talens Art Supply company which resulted in her becoming one of their ambassadors.    Charlene works as a freelance, independent artist on several projects, such as murals, private commissions, and book illustrations with clients. Five children's books she has illustrated and a literary novel, have been published in 2018 and 2019; three winning Purple Dragon awards first and second places within their categories. She works closely with various authors and longest so far with Deedee Cummings, the founder of Make A Way Media. As an independent artist, Charlene works with clientele worldwide, shipping out commissioned paintings as big as 12x8 feet.  Her large roster of public and private murals include locations such as: San Diego State University, Barrio Logan, La Jolla Shores, Horton Plaza, Venice Beach, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Los Angeles, Lake Forest and Shenzhen, China.    Her personal artwork is created in her San Diego studio, STUDIO 15, at Art on 30th. Charlene is currently represented by Sparks Gallery in Downtown San Diego, California. The artist is working on her upcoming solo-exhibition "Pollinators" at Sparks Gallery, set to debut May 15th, 5-8pm. The exhibition runs May 15- July 3, 2022.   “My work depicts my curiosity of how people connect to nature in a busy technology and mass- media driven world. I paint people I see in everyday life as well as myself and how I see myself interact with and observe my natural surroundings. I love to paint in a combination of expressive line and brushstroke and vibrant colors, with the effect of intriguing the viewer and letting the eye embark on a visually fulfilling journey.” -Mosley

What we're talking about: Today on Course and Career Chat I'm chatting with Jacinta, who completed a Bachelor of Interior Design at Collarts. She was initially planning to study overseas, but after things didn't go to plan, she reflected on what she enjoyed doing and realised that she actually wanted to study interior design instead. She felt great about Collarts as soon as she was interviewed and received a conditional offer before results were released. Jacinta gives us great insights into what her course was like and also what she's been doing in her career so far. Pursuing Basketball Scholarships in the US Jacinta shares that she was on track to apply for scholarships to US colleges to pursue playing basketball. She was given the advice to do maths and science in VCE to ensure she would have the GPA to be accepted, even though she really enjoyed Studio Arts and Media. Jacinta was working with a company and creating a portfolio to show her skills when she got injured during a game, making her question whether this was the pathway she really wanted to go down anyway. Interior Design at Collarts Jacinta explains the process of applying to Collarts, including creating a portfolio during VCE and what the interview process looks like. She felt welcome right away and loved her course, and Jacinta goes into detail about what she studied, the structure of the course, and all of the opportunities she had throughout her course to get an idea of what a career in interior design would look like, including amazing optional experiences and a compulsory placement at the end. Careers in Interior Design Jacinta highlights the fact that at 20 years old she's already qualified and has a full time job doing something she loves due to the structure of the course (6 trimesters over 2 years). She goes into detail about the types of things she works on day-to-day as an interior designer. She also runs her own business (link below) creating prints on acrylic. Jacinta also shares that a friend who completed the course with her now works on the business side, using her knowledge of interior design and her business skills to promote and grow interior design businesses. A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Naomi Harris is a Canadian photographer and artist who seeks out interesting cultural trends to document through her subjects. Failure. We all fear it, especially in our art businesses. But failure is necessary for growth. If you are succeeding at everything, there is no way you're learning and growing. My guest today is ambitious and knows what she wants, and she is not afraid to fail. In our interview, you'll hear about Laura Petrovich-Cheney's philosophy that failure is the result of not listening to your instinct and not doing your best. Laura talks about a few failures she has learned from, why it's helpful to have a little bit of time and space between examining failures, and the shame that gets in the way of sharing failures with other artists. We also discuss the inevitable comparisons with other artists that arise when you fail and see only their successes. Highlights Laura Petrovich-Cheney shares the artist journey that led her to embrace failure. (1:40) Defining failure as a lack of listening to your intuition and not trying your best. (4:30) The difference between failures and mistakes. (6:14) The most productive timeline for examining your failures so you can learn from them. (11:45) Success comes from learning to do something better. (15:05) Compare rejection and failure — which one comes from within? (16:49) At what point should you define an experience as a failure? (19:47) Throw yourself a pity party, then let go and move on. (22:23) Should you share your failures with other artists? (25:42) Trying again, and again, and again, and knowing what to do better next time. (29:17) Laura shares the lessons she has learned from failing so successfully. (32:43) The benefit of asking others for help. (37:58) What is currently holding Laura's attention in her studio? And that sometimes is a bigger success.” — Laura Petrovich-Cheney “Listening to your intuition and honoring who you are is so important to being successful.” — Laura Petrovich-Cheney About My Guest Laura Petrovich-Cheney's work is a profound assessment of contemporary issues merging with traditional folk art practices, quilting, woodworking and her repurposed materials with environmental issues of climate change. In all of the artist's recent sculpture, a dialogue exists between environmental and individual concerns. Much of Laura's work is feminist in nature, incorporating traditional women's arts such as needlework and quilting, which are then transformed through found materials. Laura's work has been published in several national and international publications including television, books, magazines, podcasts and NPR. Laura was born in Philadelphia and raised in Haddonfield, New Jersey. For twenty years, she has lived in Asbury Park, New Jersey. She earned her BA in Fine Arts and English Literature at Dickinson College. He received his BFA in Studio Arts from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada and his Masters in Visual Arts from the University of Quebec in Montreal also in Montreal, Canada. Nicolas’s work relies on construction materials and building techniques developed in daily work, adapting construction site aesthetics to art-dedicated spaces. By diverting the primary functions of commercial building materials, especially drywall and plaster, he elevates these materials and techniques through the fine arts of sculpture and painting. He re-purposes construction materials to create compelling aesthetic combinations for the viewer to discover.Nicolas Fleming’s cross-disciplinary artistic practice spans over 15 years. Since 2018, Fleming has been instrumental in presenting ambitious exhibition projects notably at Evans Contemporary, Koffler Centre for the Arts, Art Gallery of Burlington, Patel Brown Gallery, Musée d’art de Joliette and Visual Arts Centre of Clarington. If I'm being honest, I'm not really sure where the best place to go to post or ask for this kind of help.  I saw some similar posts through google where people asked for advice, so I figure it may be alright. In any case..  I'm feeling a bit lost on what to do.  Here's a little bit of backstory of what happened to me: Fresh 18, started to go to CU Boulder for a dual Chemistry and Studio Arts degree.  I really didn't know what I wanted to do.  Parents were pressuring for me to pursue something that wasn't art.  I had some pretty extreme depression too.  Ended up dropping in the 3rd(?) semester, where I went through many terrible years of relationships and self deprecating, "I'll just become something useful to this guy and he can keep me alive."  Moved all over the place, never really went back home at all, didn't think it was an option because I felt like I had failed my parents.. never worked until 20, got my driver's license at 21.  Broke up from that 3 year relationship, to go into another one.  A lot more stable, but still struggling with depression/trauma of being with the prior.  Moved in with new relationship, got a full time job as a manager (kept for 3-4 years), but not really much else in developing my life.  Even though I was in a better place, I couldn't bring myself to pursue for any better.  Went on for 4 years but ended up breaking up with him recently, unfortunately.  I'm still living with him and he agreed to let me stay until I was ready to go, but I obviously need to start thinking about the next step. Through all that time, I never had any motivation to improve myself, but I want to be able to try and change my life for myself.  I just recently got my first credit card to try and build some credit too, but I'm not sure what else I need to do or how to go about doing any of this.  I have about 5k saved up at the moment. Still living with my ex for about 400$ per month for rent.  I have a job that pays 18.00$ a hour at the moment.  I have no 401k set up, or any investments either.  I do have a fully paid off car.  I'd like to be able to move out of this city, or really this state at this point, but being on my own is really frightening, especially because I don't know what I'm doing.  I can't move back in with my parents.  I don't really want to trouble them after all the years I haven't seen them, and especially because both are suffering from cancer and I still have no face to see them..  I've lived my entire life depending on people and I'm just not sure how to go from here.  I feel like I'm on a ticking time bomb because I don't know how long I can stay living with my ex. From what I'm understanding so far, I should go to CC then transfer into a university.  The credits I had when I was going to CU are probably gone now, right (2012-2013)?  How do I go about doing that?  Ho --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/4dmbox/support

On this week's The Sci-Files, your hosts Chelsie and Danny interview Kelsey Merreck Wagner. Wagner is a printmaker/painter/textile artist, environmental activist, and second-year Ph.D. Anthropology student with certifications/specializations in Gender, Justice and Environmental Change, Human-Animal Studies, and Community Engagement. Wagner has her B.A. in Studio Arts from Western Michigan University (2013) and her M.A in Appalachian Studies: Sustainability (2017). Her research focuses on human-elephant conflict and elephant ecotourism in Southeast Asia and incorporates community-based art to raise awareness, spark discussion, build capacity, and reimagine a more socially and environmentally just future for all species on the planet. Wagner's research is insistent upon participatory processes that include community members and marginalized voices, respect for humans, animals, and the environment, and radical creativity to solve problems. She has worked around the world in various community arts and education contexts, most recently in Siem Reap, Cambodia at Fauna in Focus' Nature Discovery Center, where she worked as the exhibitions coordinator, designing and creating exhibits, activities, and text for their natural history museum. She also makes her own environmental art that draws on anthropological theory on capitalism, species extinction, and human-environment relationships, and has exhibits about human-elephant relationships, bats, and plastic consumption/reduction. Wagner looks forward to getting back to Southeast Asia to see more elephants and engage in further community-based arts and environmental work.If you're interested in talking about your MSU research on the radio or nominating a student, please email Chelsie and Danny at scifiles@impact89fm.org. In this, La Tamalada: The 2020 Wrap-up Episode, the Sin Cuenta team mixes up a different "masa" for your enjoyment. A roundtable style format seemed best to get a broad, cross-age perspective about 2020. It was such a strange, divisive and often depressing year, but 2020 also happened to bring so many people together in new and unconventional ways. We hope this special episode lifts our #sincuentalisteners' collective spirits as we move into 2021. Sin Cuenta is joined by three special guests at different points along their respective life journeys. Roxana "Roxy" Perez, a 17-year old high school senior from Long Beach, California; Aaron Silva, a 27 years old, who just graduated with a BA in Studio Arts from Cal State Long Beach and is Sin Cuenta's very own Resident Artist; and Dr. Ruben Diaz, Assistant Superintendent of Parlier School District, who also recently successfully completed his doctoral studies. They each share about the people and activities that brought them joy, strength, and hope during this extraordinary and unprecedented year. Roxy is a bright young woman, proud to be of Mexican descent and a role model to her 13 year old brother. She is an encouraging symbol of abundant enthusiasm for learning and pushing forward in what should be her most cherished last year in high school. Her future looks utterly promising! Aaron brings out the unique challenges of "Zoom University" as an up and coming artist whose craft depends on authentic, hands-on experience within a creative space and having to settle instead for the much less personal and highly aseptic virtual college environment. He has nurtured joyous distractions during this difficult time and through him we see how Art and Music help lead the way out of this global crisis. Ruben's voice rings with wisdom, emphasizing the critical importance of courageous leadership and mentoring of our youth. He reminds leaders to speak up for the often "voiceless" communities of color. His love for and the need to reconnect with family brings the hope we need to hold us over until we can gather with our loved ones again. Laura and Sal join in on this insightful conversation, generating some heartfelt expressions and playful banter, that feels like a typical cross-generational holiday kitchen table chat. Hagan de cuenta que somos cualquier familia platicando a gusto durante una tamalada multigeneracional. Relax and enjoy this special episode to wrap up 2020 in true Sin Cuenta style; with admiration and optimism for the good things to come in 2021! Happy New Year y Feliz Año Nuevo a todos!

I had such an amazing time talking to the incredible painter Daisy Patton! Daisy is so easy to talk to and incredibly sharp, it was a blast to record this with her. In this episode we talk about getting out of grad school, changing mediums, death, photography, painting, treating yourself and a ton of other great topics! I felt like I was hanging out with my painting BFF. From Los Angeles, California, Daisy Patton moved back and forth between Oklahoma and California during her childhood. She spent much of her early years reading adventure and detective tales, history and art history books, and ghost stories. Patton’s practice is focused on history, memory, and social commentary stemming from this youth soaked in such specific cultural landscapes. Her work explores the meaning and social conventions of families, little discussed or hidden histories, and what it is to be a person living in our contemporary world. One such series is Forgetting is so long, reviewed in Hyperallergic and The Denver Post, as well as featured in Create! Magazine, The Jealous Curator, Vasari21, Fraction Magazine, Full Blede, and Backroom Caracas.   Currently residing in Seattle, Washington, Patton has a BFA in Studio Arts from the University of Oklahoma with minors in History and Art History and an Honors degree. Her MFA is from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston/Tufts University, a multi-disciplinary program. Patton received the Montague Travel Grant for research in Dresden, Germany, and she was also awarded a position as an exchange student at the University of Hertfordshire, UK while an undergraduate. Patton has completed artist residencies at Minerva Projects, Anderson Ranch, the Studios at MASS MoCA, RedLine Denver, and Eastside International in Los Angeles. She has exhibited in solo and group shows nationally, including her first museum solo at the CU Art Museum at the University of Colorado. K Contemporary represents Patton in Denver.   LINKS:   https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/791098.A_Gentle_Madness   http://daisypatton.com/   https://www.instagram.com/daisy_patton/

Duncan catches up with two of the members of BFAMFAPhD for a chat about the upcoming event series, which for those of you in NYC starts friday with MAKING & BEING.   Conversations about Art & Pedagogy co-presented by BFAMFAPhD & Pioneer Works, hosted by Hauser & Wirth, with media partners Bad at Sports and Eyebeam.   image credit... BFAMFAPhD, Making and Being Card Game, print version, 2016-2018, photograph by Emilio Martinez Poppe. Full details below... ____________________________   Hauser & Wirth   BFAMFAPhD is a collective that employs visual and performing art, policy reports, and teaching tools to advocate for cultural equity in the United States.   Pioneer Works is a cultural center dedicated to experimentation, education, and production across disciplines.   Contemporary art talk without the ego, Bad at Sports is the Midwest's largest independent contemporary art podcast and blog. Eyebeam is a platform for artists to engage society’s relationship with technology.   Access info:   The event is free and open to the public. The series places artists and educators in intimate conversation about forms of critique, cooperatives, artist-run spaces, healing, and the death of projects. If art making is a lifelong practice of seeking knowledge and producing art in relationship to that knowledge, why wouldn’t students learn to identify and intervene in the systems that they see around them? Why wouldn't we teach students about the political economies of art education and art circulation? Why wouldn’t we invite students to actively fight for the (art) infrastructure they want, and to see it implemented?   The series will culminate in the launch of Making and Being, a multi-platform pedagogical project that offers practices of collaboration, contemplation, and social-ecological analysis for visual artists. Making and Being is a book, a series of videos, a deck of cards, and an interactive website with freely downloadable content created by authors Susan Jahoda and Caroline Woolard with support from Fellow Emilio Martinez Poppe and BFAMFAPhD members Vicky Virgin and Agnes Szanyi.   ____________________________   SCHEDULE ____________________________ Modes of Critique   What modes of critique might foster racial equity in studio art classes at the college level?   Friday 1/18 from 6-8pm Billie Lee and Anthony Romero of the Retooling Critique Working Group Respondent: Eloise Sherrid, filmmaker, The Room of Silence   Billie Lee is an artist, educator, and writer working at the intersection of art, pedagogy, and social change. We are committed to a collaborative, consensus-based process that values diverse experience and expertise. We support the creation of thoughtful and provocative stories that reflect a complex world. Our work has been broadcast on HBO, PBS, and many other networks, and screened at festivals worldwide, including Sundance, Tribeca, Rotterdam and CPH:Dox. Founded as an informal arts collective in 2005 we have grown to include a cooperatively-owned production company and a collective of artists in residence.   Friends of Light develops and produces jackets woven to form for each client.  We partner with small-scale fiber producers to source our materials, and with spinners to develop our yarns.    We construct our own looms to create pattern pieces that have complete woven edges (selvages) and therefore do not need to be cut. The design emerges from the materials and from methods developed to weave two dimensional cloth into three dimensional form. Each jacket is the expression of the collective knowledge of the people involved in its creation. Zach is a lifelong watch collector and has the stash of scratched up Swatches to prove it. He holds a B.A. from Bard College in Studio Arts and a Masters of Design in Designed Objects from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. As a working product, graphic and packaging designer, he views watches as the perfect synergy of 2D and 3D design: the place where form, function, fashion and mechanical wonderment come together. He has even had some viral success with his own ORBO digital watch concept. Having started a hugely successful watch blog, worn&wound has also launched an equally successful watch strap and accessory store. All of the items offered at the worn&wound shop are developed by the worn&wound team with the goal of creating products of superior quality and affordable price. Further, they're proud to say that all worn&wound watch straps and original products are designed and manufactured in the USA. Read their blog at http://www.wornandwound.com/ and grab one of their watch straps at http://shop.wornandwound.com/ PS: Be sure to subscribe to the podcast via iTunes and write a review. iTunes is all about reviews!

Zaria's enthusiasm for drawing began during her childhood when she and her family traveled to some of the world's most remote landscapes, the subject of her mother's fine art photography. A cum laude graduate in Studio Arts from Skidmore College, Zaria has exhibited extensively at galleries and venues throughout the United States and overseas. Zaria recently completed a series of drawings that will be the set design for the classic ballet "Giselle", premiering this October at the Grand Theatre of Geneva, Switzerland. In August 2012 she will lead Chasing the Light, an art expedition in Greenland, re-tracing the 1869 journey of American painter William Bradford and artistically documenting the rapidly changing landscape (www.kickstarter.com/projects/701351414/chasing-the-light). The expedition is dedicated to Zaria's mother who was inspired by Bradford's journey. A lovely backgrounder on Zaria and her work can be found at: https://www.artsy.net/artist/zaria-forman
