Philip Goldberg – Spiritual Practice For Crazy TimesHow To Build Your Own “Sane Asylum”Aired Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM ESTInterview with Practitioner, Teacher and Author Philip Goldberg “Timeless wisdom is always timely.”— Swami BeyondanandaAs our attention is drawn “out there” to the latest news or latest speculation or latest commentary about COVID-19, information given ostensibly to safeguard our health is making people more stressed, and consequently less healthy. The question is not so much how do we tune that information out, but how do we attune ourselves in to the resources that will help us process this information in a helpful, healthy way?Long-time meditation teacher, practitioner and author Philip Goldberg has a new book out that couldn’t be more timely – Spiritual Practice for Crazy Times. And anyone who doesn’t think these are crazy times must be nuts.Philip Goldberg has been studying the world’s spiritual traditions for more than 50 years, as a practitioner, teacher, and writer. He is the author or co-author of more than 20 books, including The Intuitive Edge; Get Out of Your Own Way; and Roadsigns on the Spiritual Path: Living at the Heart of Paradox. His 2010 book American Veda: From Emerson and the Beatles to Yoga and Meditation, How Indian Spirituality Changed the West chronicles the remarkable influence of India’s traditional spiritual teachings on the West and was named one of the top 10 religion books of the year by both Huffington Post and the American Library Association’s Booklist. His most recent book, published by Hay House, was The Life of Yogananda: The Story of the Yogi Who Became the First Modern Guru. He also appears onscreen in the award-winning documentary Awake: The Life of Yogananda. A screenwriter and published novelist (This Is Next Year), Phil is an ordained interfaith minister, spiritual counselor, and meditation teacher trained in 1970 by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Now I have to be honest. Phil and I go back a long, long ways – since before I knew him. We both attended John Marshall Junior High School in Brooklyn at the same time, even though I didn’t know him then, and we grew up in the same spiritual tradition – as Brooklyn Dodger fans.I’ve had a chance to go through Phil’s prescriptions for creating a “sane asylum” during these crazy times, and they are filled with humor, down-to-earth pragmatic wisdom, and uncommonly commonsensical practices. If you’re ready to “go sane” and help others in your community do the same, please tune in this Tuesday, May 5th 2-3 pm PT / 5-6 pm ET. http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/To find out more about Phil Goldberg’s work, please go here: http://philipgoldberg.com/about-philip-goldberg/Support Wiki Politiki — A Clear Voice In the “Bewilderness”If you LOVE what you hear, and appreciate the mission of Wiki Politiki, “put your money where your mouse is” … Join the “upwising” — join the conversation, and become a Wiki Politiki supporter: http://wikipolitiki.com/join-the-upwising/Make a contribution in any amount via PayPal (https://tinyurl.com/y8fe9dks)Go ahead, PATRONIZE me! Aired Tuesday, 2 October 2018, 5:00 PM ESTEastern Spirituality and Political EvolutionAn Interview with Meditation Teacher and Author Philip Goldberg“Bob Dylan was wrong. You DO need a Veda man to know which way the wind blows.” — Swami BeyondanandaEver since the era of the “moral majority” and the Christian Coalition, we have seen how religion can impact our political conversations, and national destiny. But what about those “other” religions that come from the East? Our guest this week, Philip Goldberg, is an expert on how and why Americans have flocked to Eastern religions over the past half-century, and the impact this migration has had on our national consciousness. He speaks from experience. Growing up in a non-religious Jewish-Marxist household, Philip found his own way to spirituality by becoming a student of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and a teacher of Transcendental Meditation. His book American Veda: From Emerson and the Beatles to Yoga and Meditation, How Indian Spirituality Changed the West offers a rich account of his own spiritual development, and an enlightening history of how the Vedic tradition and “perennial wisdom” developed in the wake of the transcendentalist movement in the 1800s.His latest book is a comprehensive biography of Paramahansa Yogananda titled The Life of Yogananda: The Story of the Yogi Who Became the First Modern Guru. Philip is also a meditation teacher and ordained Interfaith Minister, and also the cohost of the popular Spirit Matters podcast and leads American Veda Tours to India.Philip and I have another interesting connection that dates back to before we knew one another. We both attended John Marshall Junior High in Brooklyn, a school notorious as one of the “worst” in New York City, where the principal actually took his own life in despair about crime at his school. He and I also share a common spiritual tradition from our childhood. No, not Judaism — the Brooklyn Dodgers. In addition to his well-researched works on Eastern spirituality in America, he is the author of an autobiographical novel about the year the Brooklyn Dodgers won the World Series, “This Is Next Year.”If you’re curious about how Eastern wisdom can inform our current political “shituation” and enjoyed reading Autobiography of a Yogi back in the day, you’ll appreciate Philip going deeper into how and why Yogananda came to the U.S., his reception here, and his enduring influence. As an indication of where Philip is coming from, here is a quote from his website:“American democracy can flourish only when citizens are united, at a deep level that transcends ideology, race, and class, to a shared spiritual and moral vision of what America should be.”If you recognize that the heart and soul of who we are includes and transcends both religion and non-religion, please join us this Tuesday, October 2nd at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET. : http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/Or, find us on the Wiki archives on Wednesday: http://wikipolitiki.com/archives/Philip Goldberg can be found online at: http://philipgoldberg.com/Support Wiki Politiki — A Clear Voice In The “Bewilderness”If you LOVE what you hear, and appreciate the mission of Wiki Politiki, “put your money where your mouse is” … Join the “upwising” — join the conversation, and become a Wiki Politiki supporter: http://wikipolitiki.com/join-the-upwising/Make a contribution in any amount via PayPal (https://tinyurl.com/y8fe9dks)Go ahead, PATRONIZE me! Aired Wednesday, 30 May 2018, 8:00 PM ETPhilip Goldberg – The Life of YoganandaThe word guru is used frequently in modern vernacular to imply an expert or master in a field. We hear about financial gurus, tech gurus and fashion gurus. The word guru comes from Sanskrit and translates as “spiritual teacher” and literally, a dispeller of darkness. When we think of modern gurus, perhaps Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Satya Sai Baba and Swami Satchidananda come to mind, but the first modern “superstar guru” was Yogananda. Ninety-seven years after his arrival in the United States and 65 years after his transition, Paramahansa Yogananda remains the best known and most beloved of all the Indian spiritual teachers who came to the west. This is because of the durability of his teachings and the institutions he created and inspired, including more than 600 centers worldwide, and his landmark memoir, Autobiography of a Yogi. The book has sold millions of copies since its publication in 1946, but there are huge gaps in the story it tells. Yoganada spent more than 39 of his 59 years in America, yet that period takes up less than 10 percent of his book. Major events in his life, including challenges, controversies, relationships, formative experiences, are still unknown even to the most ardent of his devotees. My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, Philip Goldberg, has meticulously researched the life of Yoganada to share the rest of his story. Philip grew up in Brooklyn, New York and now lives in Los Angeles. A professional writer for more than forty years, he is author and co-author of some 25 books published in more than a dozen languages. He is also a skilled public speaker, workshop leader, spiritual counselor and the co-host of the popular podcast, Spirit Matters. He blogs at Huffington Post and Spirituality and Health, and contributes to other publications. His previous book, American Veda, chronicled the impact of India’s spiritual teachings on the West and was named one of the top ten Religion Books of 2010. His website is philipgoldberg.com and he joins me this week to discuss his just published book, The Life of Yogananda – The Story of the Yogi Who Became the First Modern Guru.
