April 14, 2025It is tough right now to see all that is happening in our world. Many emotions come up for me that can be paralyzing – keeping me from positivelycontributing my gifts. Yet I can't have my eyes closed and live simply byungrounded hope, because that is denial. I need to live with my eyes open tothe reality of what is happening and my heart open towards community, compassionand comfort.Today we will be practicing Tonglen, which is “giving and receiving”.In this Buddhist practice we identify a feeling/emotion that we areexperiencing and imagine others experiencing the same feeling, even people wedon't know or don't necessarily agree with. Then we send out comfort, love, andlight. For our listening portion today:I amdetermined to cultivate only thoughts that increase trust and loveTo use myhands to perform only deeds that build communityTo speakonly words of harmony and aid.Thich NhatHanhI reference theauthor/scientist Margaret Wheatley, Leadership and the New Science; RestoringSanity: Practices to Awaken Generosity, Creativity, and Kindness in Ourselvesand Our Organizations; and Who Do We Choose to Be

Drawn from Tara's book, Radical Compassion (2020), these three talks explore how the RAIN practice (Recognize, Allow, Investigate, Nurture) awakens the active, embodied caring that heals and frees our hearts. Through the framework of this practice, we look at how we can reconnect with the gold of our true nature, navigating life's challenges with mindfulness and love. In Part 3, Tara explores: How the RAIN practice fosters compassion and connection by dismantling barriers to belonging. The three primary blocks to compassion: self-centered attention, creating a "bad other," and fear of overwhelm. How "stealth metta" and the mantra "We are friends" can soften our habitual biases and awaken kindness. The transformative power of seeing the "goodness behind the mask" in ourselves and others. The practice of Tonglen - breathing in suffering and breathing out care, to transform pain into a source of strength and connection.

Start your day with an audio guided meditation by Lisa Konie.
We can precede the Chenrezig visualization by calming techniques and breathing exercises, reciting prayers and reflecting on the kindness of Guru Shakyamuni Buddha. Buddha made immense sacrifices for the benefit of all sentient beings, practicing morality, charity, perseverance, concentration, and wisdom for three countless great eons. Integrating Lam Rim meditation with deity meditation and mantra recitation can make the practice more powerful. Chanting serves as a form of meditation, giving us time to reflect and meditate on the teachings and carries blessings from enlightened beings and supports the arising of devotion, renunciation, compassion, and bodhicitta.Lama Zopa Rinpoche explains the three causes of refuge (recognition of suffering and delusion, compassion for sentient beings, and devotion to the Three Jewels) and the distinction between causal and resultant refuge in the path towards enlightenment.Generating bodhicitta by reciting, "I must achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings, therefore I'm going to generate bodhicitta" accumulates far greater merit than making offerings to the Buddhas for eons equal to the number of sand grains in the Pacific Ocean, or even the Atlantic Ocean. The act of generating bodhicitta is so powerful that it surpasses unimaginable offerings in terms of merit. When making offerings to Guru Chenrezig, visualize the essence of the offering as generating infinite bliss in his holy mind. Offerings we make during our practice are not just visualizations but are real offerings. Rinpoche guides us through a visualization of Chenrezig, focusing on the deity's form, attributes, and the symbolism of each aspect. Chenrezig's pure body contains countless pure realms of Buddhas within each pore, signifying the power and qualities of the Buddhas. The commentary continues with the recitation of Chenrezig's mantra and the development of great compassion, where we can engage in practices such as Tonglen (taking and giving) to alleviate the suffering of sentient beings and purify our own negativities. We can make requests to Chenrezig using a prayer that includes various requests and aspirations. These requests encompass a wide range of situations and challenges that we may encounter in our lives. We seek Chenrezig's guidance and blessings to overcome them. This teaching was given at Institut Vajra Yogini, France as part of a Four Kadampa Deities Retreat from April 18 to May 11, 2003. Do you get stressed, afraid, or sad? Does conflict with others wear you down? If the answer is yes, there is a solution for you. It is called empathy: caring and giving with intention—both to yourself and others. Our esteemed guest on Love University, Judith Orloff (drjudithorloff.com), empathic psychiatrist and New York Times bestselling author shared light on the “Genius of Empathy” from her new book with the same title. According to Judith, empathy is an important part of emotional intelligence and a powerful healing tool for ourselves and others. Here's what we learned from Judith about the amazing gift of empathy: *You need to start with self-empathy. You may be hard on yourself, self-critical and attacking yourself about your flaws and mistakes. This is especially the case for sensitive and caring people who often excessively take on the psychological burdens of others and don't know how to set healthy boundaries. If this sounds like you, it's important to put yourself in your own shoes and be an advocate for your self-worth and value. Love yourself by putting your hand over your heart and repeating this phrase: “I forgive myself for my past and I open my heart to my future. I am a loving and valuable human being. I can say “No” to others and still be OK. All is well.” *Practice empathy toward others. Place yourself in other people's shoes; feel as they feel during your time with them. When someone angrily cuts you off on the road, instead of getting angry in return, you can slow down your thought process and see the situation through their eyes. You can consider, “Maybe they're having a rough day—perhaps they're feeling sick or just got into a fight with a loved one. There may be a reason for their behavior that I'm not seeing.” When you substitute your irritation and anger for empathy and love, you start to display compassion, and you have a desire to relieve their suffering. Think about how much the angry person suffers from their own reactions—their face gets red, their veins pop. They can't really help themselves. Now you can forgive them and move on to a higher plane of feeling. *Develop empathy toward the world. According to Judith, it's important to understand the “Power of We” instead of “Us Versus Them.” The truth is that we are all interconnected as human beings. We all share this planet. We all breathe in air, eat, sleep, love, and work. We suffer from the same feelings of regret, sadness, anger, and frustration. We all want to love and be loved, enjoy life in the way we can, and feel meaningful or valuable in some way. By seeing other people as part of a grand human family, we can develop a global sense of empathy. We can send a healing thought or prayer to people in parts of the world who are in horrible conflict or strife. Also, by practicing the beautiful Tonglen meditation, we can inhale the suffering of others and breathe out compassion and love. In this way, we can help heal the world as we heal ourselves. Empathy is on a continuum. Some people are very empathetic, others moderately so, and some (sociopaths, narcissists) have little, if any, empathy. The good news is that a majority of people can increase their empathy toward themselves and others. By doing so, you will quiet the unkind voices in your head (self-critical thoughts), and you will befriend yourself and others. You will also establish good boundaries so you are not overwhelmed by the negativity of others. And, most importantly of all, you will extend loving energy without expectation and shine your light of love to all who may receive it. Empathy is truly a genius, and the genius is in you. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT. JOIN AVILA AND LOVE UNIVERSITY FOR A LIVE PODCAST AND BOOK SIGNING AT THE LA TIMES BOOK FESTIVAL: SATURDAY APRIL 20TH 12 TO 5PM AT USC CAMPUS, BOOTH 145. WE'LL HAVE A BLAST, MAKE NEW FRIENDS, AND LEARN VALUABLE KNOWLEDGE.

Waylon asks our Elephant Journal community to pick a page in his book "It's Never too Late to Fall in Love with your Life." A reader picked Chapter 18, and Waylon does an impromptu reading. "Tonglen, the Buddhist meditation practice of 'sending and taking,' gives us a way to work with our (or others') anger, suffering, stress, or heartbreak. Simple yet counter-intuitive, this meditation reverses the flow of ego, easing our silly crazy mopey neurosis and engendering compassion." ~ Waylon Lewis, Chapter 18: "It's Never too Late to Fall in Love with your Life." Tonglen Practice is a warrior practice for those who are seeking peace, tenderness and kindness within this world. Tong – giving or sending. Len – receiving or taking. It is also known as exchanging self with other. It is the aspirational precept to the path of the Bodhicitta, the seeker towards a mind that is awakened, enlightened by compassion, empathy and kindness towards all sentient beings. The practice involves breathwork which, at its most basic follows this pattern-Inhale others pain and suffering then offer them, on the exhale, peace and loving-kindness. Inhale their physical discomfort and mental anguish Exhale for them to be free from it. This practice reduces attachments that keep us stuck in our own cycle of pain, suffering and limited beliefs of existence. It reduces the separateness of us and others and gets us out of our own ego-centric focus on what we lack or what limits us. By giving, by sending and by energetically helping through a generous heart-felt thought, we develop and expand our capacity for kindness. This practice of Tonglen clears the lens of our perception and we begin to see that all deserve to be held by the wholeness of a loving presence. For this practice I offer a timely focus which you can use at home. Please use an image of the refugees and asylum seekers from the photographer Muhammed Muheisen and support his ongoing mission to document those who are victims of war and who have fled their homes for safety. The primary motivation behind wanting to become a Buddha for the sake of all living beings is boundless compassion. This unconditional love and concern for the well-being and liberation of all sentient beings, without exception, takes effort to cultivate. A bodhisattva is someone who, out of compassion, vows to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. The wish itself is called "bodhicitta." What marks becoming a bodhisattva is that their intention to become a Buddha is unmovable (meaning they've developed bodhicitta). While the Bodhisattva Vow is central to the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, this aspiration to become a Buddha transcends cultural, religious, and philosophical boundaries. It is a universal call to alleviate suffering for all living beings, regardless of their background or beliefs. Some may view the aspiration to become a Buddha as a sacred duty, a calling that arises from a deep sense of responsibility towards all living beings and the world as a whole. The practice of Taking and Giving, or Tonglen, is a powerful method for cultivating compassion and ripening bodhicitta. It does so by developing empathy, erasing boundaries between self and other, transforming negative mental states, and deepening one's commitment to the welfare of all beings. Through consistent practice, we can gradually mature in our capacity for selfless love and compassion. By day shines the sun; by night shines the moon; in regalia shines the king; in meditation shines the arahat; but the Buddha in his glory shines at all times, by day and by night. Tonglen (Tibetan: "giving and taking") is an exceptional practice within Mahayana Buddhism. Meditators can visualize, assimilate, and transform another person's illness through conscious love. Afterward, the practitioner sends the patient light, love, and healing at no cost to oneself. This exercise is complemented by the Biblical or Aramaic mantra Talitha Cumi (Mark 5:41), whereby the Christic force of enlightened compassion radically expedites convalescence and spiritual empowerment. By healing others, we gain divine favor. Resources Tonglen Meditation with Mantra Talitha Cumi PowerPoint
Lojong, or mind training, is a core practice in all the lineages of the Tibetan tradition. They can perhaps best be characterized as a method for transforming our mind by turning away from self-centeredness and cultivating instead the mental habits that generate bodhicitta, the awakened mind that puts the benefit of others above all else. The teachings on it are more diverse than many people realize. The lojong teachings include instruction in formless meditation, in the practice of “sending and taking” (tonglen), and in postmeditation practice—putting our meditation into action in our daily lives. These are the primary slogans for Lojong 1. First train in the preliminaries 2. Regard all dharmas as dreams 3. Examine the nature of unborn awareness 4. Self-liberate even the antidote 5. Rest in the nature of alaya, the essence 6. In post-meditation, be a child of illusion 6.1. Absolute and Relative Bodhichitta 7. Sending and taking should be practiced alternately. These two should ride the breath 8. Three objects, three poisons, and three seeds of virtue 9. In all activities train with slogans 10. Begin the sequence of sending and taking with yourself 11. When the world is filled with evil, transform all mishaps into the path of bodhi 12. Drive all blames into one 13. Be grateful to everyone 14. Seeing confusion as the four kayas is unsurpassable shunyata protection 15. Four practices are the best of methods 16. Whatever you meet unexpectedly, join it with meditation 17. Practice the five strengths, the condensed heart instructions 18. The ejection of consciousness 19. All dharma agrees at one point 20. Of the two witnesses, hold the principal one 21. Always maintain only a joyful mind 22. If you can practice even when distracted, you are well trained 23. Always abide by the three basic principles 24. Change your attitude, but remain natural 25. Don't talk about injured limbs 26. Don't ponder others 27. Work with the greatest defilements first 28. Abandon any hope of fruition 29. Abandon poisonous food 30. Don't be so predictable 31. Don't malign others 32. Don't wait in ambush 33. Don't bring things to a painful point 34. Don't transfer the ox's load to the cow 35. Don't try and be the fastest 36. Don't act with a twist 37. Don't make gods into demons 38. Don't seek others' pain as the limbs of your own happiness 39. All activities should be done with one intention 40. Correct all wrongs with one intention 41. Two activities: one at the beginning, one at the end 42. Whichever of the two occurs, be patient 43. Observe these two, even at the risk of your life 44. Train in the three difficulties 45. Take on the three principal causes 46. Pay heed that the three never wane 47. Keep the three inseparable 48. Train without bias in all areas. It is crucial always to do this pervasively and wholeheartedly 49. Always meditate on whatever provokes resentment 50. Don't be swayed by external circumstances 51. This time, practice the main points 52. Don't misinterpret 53. Don't vacillate 54. Train wholeheartedly 55. Liberate yourself by examining and analyzing 56. Don't wallow in self-pity 57. Don't be jealous 58. Don't be frivolous 59. Don't expect applause

Meditation: Compassion Practice – Tonglen - Our deepest wisdom and purest actions arise out of open-hearted presence. This meditation, “Awakening Compassion,” is drawn from the Tibetan tradition and carries us home to the vastness of loving presence (re-mastered from the 2013 IMCW fall 7-day silent retreat).
