Re-Air: The Magic of ‘The Artist's Way'

The Art Angle

In this re-air of an episode from last year. Ben Davis speaks with Julia Cameron, the author of The Artist's Way. It is a somewhat unusual subject for us, but it's also been an episode that's been very meaningful to a lot of listeners. And in case you're wondering, Ben started doing morning pages to prepare for the interview, and six months later, and he has stuck with it. Millions of people know The Artist's Way. First published in 1992, the book began as notes for a class that its author, Julia Cameron, taught on creative self-discovery or, as she sometimes prefers to call it, “creative recovery.” It found a huge audience, and today you can find Artist's Way groups all over the world. Cameron's original The Artist's Way offered a 12-week path towards overcoming artistic blocks. The book was subtitled “A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity,” and it spoke of plugging into a current of what she called “spiritual electricity.” But her techniques were practical and easy to grasp. Rituals from The Artist's Way such as starting your day by writing out three pages of unedited text, known as “doing your Morning Pages,” have become part of the creative process of many, many artists, musicians, and writers. More than three decades after its publication, The Artist's Way continues to find new followers, and even got a new bump of popularity during the 2020s. And Julia Cameron herself has returned this year with The Daily Artist's Way, offering a new way in for fans. Cameron agreed to speak to Davis to revisit the origins of her famous method and how she's tweaking it now in this new book.

1795: The Absurdity of Imitation on the Spiritual Path

When we first find the spiritual path, we imitate. It's natural. We put on the costume before we've done the inner work. We adopt the style before we've absorbed the substance. We copy what we see in the saints and the sages — the dress, the language, the mood. But it's been said: "No man was ever great by imitation. Almost all absurdity of conduct arises from the imitation of those whom we cannot resemble." Raghunath and Kaustubha take that insight into one of the most important questions in the Bhagavatam: how could Krishna, the original speaker and guardian of morality, have a romantic relationship with so many girls? The answer extends to reframing who we are and what our purpose in life is. On the broadest level, the material world itself is the result of us imitating the Divine. That imitation produces absurdity and suffering. Returning to our natural position can be found through bhakti. Your creativity is more than self-expression. The creative force is a direct pathway to your intuition, your inner guidance, and your divine connection. But something is moving under the surface of our awareness and reshaping the creative landscape, and most people have no idea it's happening. In this live episode of Soul Elevation, Kara Goodwin explores how leaning into your creativity opens dormant channels of intuition and accelerates your spiritual awakening. And what really need to talk about what we're energetically losing as AI-generated content floods our world in ways that are largely invisible to consumers. Particularly in the music industry! It is shocking what is happening in favor of creating cheap content that floods streaming services that is not even created by humans, at the expense of human creative professionals. But this isn't JUST an issue for creative professionals. There is a greater discussion to be had about your own creative expression and how it relates to your soul.

The Dangers of a Spiritual Path without Psychological Grounding

Love, Evolved: Conscious Relationships

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2026 46:00

What happens when spirituality is psychologically ungrounded?Today I share the real dangers that I've seen when this is the case, and how we can avoid this with a true psycho-spiritual approach. The importance of grounded psychological work for those who lean in a more spiritual direction cannot be overstated.Psycho-spiritual integration is KEY…The spiritual ego these days is quite strong collectively, where many people who lean that way reject therapy outright, and the more grounded psychological work. What they don't realize is that this is what they often need the MOST.I've seen multiple spiritual teachers directly guiding their students to reject therapy. This is straight up harmful and often has very dangerous consequences when the person is mentally unwell or has a lot of unhealed trauma. In a perfect world, we'd have practitioners helping people who are offering a more holistic, integrated, psycho-spiritual approach so that our clients wouldn't have to piece together a whole team of people. We're not there yet, so many times this has to be the case, where we support ourselves on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level with various support people. If you've done years of spiritual work and haven't ever delved into grounded psychological support, even traditional therapy, now may be the time to get real and do some work. It won't feel sexy and a huge amount of ego resistance may be present. For others, it's the opposite - they've done years of traditional therapy, and now it's time to open up spiritually. For the practitioners, for those called to be of most service to their community, it's always beneficial to self-assess. Where are our blind spots, and where may we be called to become more holistic? For me, I started out practicing more traditional psychology and then weaved in spirituality. I've been deeply spiritual in my personal life from childhood and so this wasn't a stretch, but I did have to blast through conditioned training around scope of practice and a system that often teaches therapists to avoid spirituality altogether. For primarily spiritual teachers, it could be SO useful to get some training in a more grounded psychological approach. I really do think that a psycho-spiritual framework is where we are being asked to go regardless of what side of the coin we're on, and it's actually a return to true psychology, as the word “psyche” originally means “soul.” Unfortunately, the field was stripped and sanitized of the spiritual side of things.I know that not every practitioner wants to be more integrated, and that's fine. If practitioners want to stay in a more spiritual lane, for example, they ideally should be honest with their community that what they provide is not therapy, and isn't a replacement for grounded, foundational work with a mental health professional. The best spiritual teachers or coaches make this clear in the language on their website or within their explicit teachings.Teachers or coaches who do not are a real red flag, in my opinion. They don't know their own limits and often have rejected therapy in their own lives, and so truly believe that a one sided approach works. It can be helpful to find out the background of the practitioners you're considering working with to see what types of inner work they've done. I always try to be transparent with my community, because it matters.Unfortunately, spiritual teachers who are taking on clients who are mentally unwell and psychologically ungrounded are perpetuating this problem, and some of them even tell their clients to reject therapy. It's not a stretch to say that this won't end well in most of the cases, and it's really sad to see cases of people who have taken their own lives or the lives of others because the practitioner was blind to the fact that psychological support is absolutely warranted for many, many people.I would love to hear your thoughts about this conversation.Watch the video of this episode on YouTube.Link to a prior video I recorded on this topic:Are You Too Spiritually Advanced?—About Me:My name is Leigh-Anne LoPinto, and my mission is to help co-create the new paradigm of relationships. Rudolf Steiner: Beyond the Boundaries of Knowledge

From the beginning, spiritual reality was as certain to Rudolf Steiner as physical reality. He lived in both the invisible and visible worlds. He saw his task as connecting them. For a long time, however, the invisible world seemed more real. Rudolf Steiner was an Austrian philosopher who founded Anthroposophy, a term derived from the Greek anthropos (human being) and sophia (wisdom), meaning “wisdom of the human being.” He was a prolific writer and lecturer. His Collected Works span roughly 400 volumes in the German edition. Topics are wide-ranging and include education, Christology, mysticism, human evolution, natural science, art, agriculture, social reform, among others.Steiner developed the Waldorf school movement, introduced the expressive art of eurythmy, launched the biodynamic farming movement, developed anthroposophical medicine, and designed the Goetheanum, the main building of the Anthroposophical Society, among other contributions. The beauty of Steiner is that he was not only a philosopher absorbed in the world of ideas and the natural sciences, nor simply an explorer of the spiritual world, but also someone who brought his ideas into practical life while remaining firmly grounded. His work was consistently motivated by a concern for human development and for the Earth, and above all by a desire to place the knowledge he had acquired in the service of the world.

Guru Ram Das Ji emphasizes that without the Guru, human life is wasted in the darkness of worldly illusion (Maya). However, when the Guru blesses a seeker, their past sins are erased, and they are safely guided on the spiritual path toward Divine union.Key Spiritual Teachings1. The Priceless Gift of Naam (The Divine Name) * Spiritual Debt Cleared: When the Guru places his blessing hand on the seeker's forehead, the invaluable "Jewel" of God's Name is enshrined within the heart. This divine gift destroys the sins, pains, and karmic debts accumulated over countless lifetimes. * Fulfillment of All Desires: Meditating on God's Name fulfills all spiritual and worldly purposes. To live without this connection to the Naam is to utterly waste human life.2. The Plight of the Self-Willed (Manmukh) * Trapped in Illusion: Those who ignore the Guru and follow their own ego-driven minds remain foolish and spiritually blind. They spend their lives continuously entangled in the emotional attachments of Maya. * A Wasted Life: Because they refuse to seek the company or the humble shelter of the enlightened saints, their entire life's journey becomes completely useless.3. The Virtue of Humility and Service * The True Master: Those who humbly serve the saints and walk in the Guru's footsteps find ultimate fulfillment. They are no longer spiritual orphans; they belong to God. * The Prayer for Humility: The Guru models extreme humility, praying to the Lord of the Universe to be blessed as the "slave of the slave of the slaves" of the Divine. Conclusion & Final PrayerThe Shabad concludes with a poignant confession of human limitation. The Guru states that we are spiritually blind, ignorant, and entirely lacking the wisdom needed to navigate the treacherous path of life on our own.The ultimate prayer is a cry for guidance: "O Guru, let us hold onto the hem of your robe, so that we may walk in step with you and safely reach our destination."JAITSREE, FOURTH MEHL, FIRST HOUSE, CHAU-PADAS:ONE UNIVERSAL CREATOR GOD. BY THE GRACE OF THE TRUE GURU:The Jewel of the Lord's Name abides within my heart; the Guru has placed His hand on my forehead. The sins and pains of countless incarnations have been cast out. The Guru has blessed me with the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and my debt has been paid off. || 1 || O my mind, vibrate the Lord's Name, and all your affairs shall be resolved. The Perfect Guru has implanted the Lord's Name within me; without the Name, life is useless. || Pause || Without the Guru, the self-willed manmukhs are foolish and ignorant; they are forever entangled in emotional attachment to Maya. They never serve the feet of the Holy; their lives are totally useless. || 2 || Those who serve at the feet of the Holy, the feet of the Holy, their lives are made fruitful, and they belong to the Lord. Make me the slave of the slave of the slaves of the Lord; bless me with Your Mercy, O Lord of the Universe. || 3 || I am blind, ignorant and totally without wisdom; how can I walk on the Path? I am blind — O Guru, please let me grasp the hem of Your robe, so that servant Nanak may walk in harmony with You. || 4 || 1

By observing and letting go instead of resisting or controlling, you naturally rise into peace and alignment with something greater. © Sounds True Inc. Episodes: © 2026 Michael A. Singer. What happens when a man stops leaking his energy into the endless dopamine loops of modern culture and instead learns to cultivate, channel, and protect it?In this wide-ranging conversation, Ben and Mike sit down with returning guests Will Blunderfield and Justin Leslie to explore the increasingly discussed — and often misunderstood — practice of semen retention. Justin shares his personal journey of over 240 days of retention, framed through discipline, spiritual conviction, and his evolving Christian faith. Will brings his background in Taoist sexual practices, tantra, and “sexual kung fu,” offering a perspective on how sexual energy can be cultivated and transmuted rather than simply suppressed or expelled.Along the way, the group tackles cultural myths about ejaculation and health, the influence of pornography on young men, the spiritual dimensions of sexuality, and the deeper question of what masculinity looks like in a world that often encourages indulgence rather than mastery.Rather than advocating repression, the conversation explores reverence – for the body, for sexual energy, and for the role that discipline and intention can play in a person's spiritual path.Topics discussed:• Justin's 240+ day semen retention journey• Pornography, dopamine loops, and the modern masculinity crisis• Sexual energy as creative life force• Taoist and tantric practices of sexual transmutation• The myth that retention causes prostate cancer• Lust vs reverence in sexual culture• Christianity, celibacy, and the spiritual discipline of masculinity• How retention can influence focus, vitality, and physical performanceWhether you see semen retention as a biological experiment, a spiritual discipline, or simply a provocative idea worth exploring, this conversation invites listeners (both man and woman) to reconsider one of the most taboo — and powerful — aspects of human vitality.Learn more about Will Blunderfield at https://willblunderfield.ca/ and follow him on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/notwillblunderfield/.Learn more about Justin Leslie at https://justintegrity.net/ and follow him on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/justin.leslie3/ and X at https://x.com/justintegrity_.Support Terrain Theory on Patreon! Part two of two.In Part 2 of this conversation with astrologer Jim Sher, the focus shifts from the inner world to the outer one.Daniel and Jim explore the deeper meaning of Pluto, not simply as an astrological symbol, but as a force of intensification, one that brings unconscious patterns to the surface and challenges both individuals and societies to confront what they would rather avoid. They examine how periods of upheaval, uncertainty, and division may not be signs of collapse, but part of a larger process of transformation. The conversation also touches on belief systems, fear, and the psychological structures that shape how people interpret reality. There is a rawness in them that feels honest and important. This episode on betrayal is one of those. It originally aired in 2023 from Season 4.Betrayal can take many forms. It is not only about infidelity. It can be secrecy. Addiction. Emotional withdrawal. Broken promises. The moment when something you believed to be true suddenly isn't. It can feel shattering. And yet, in the Recover Your Soul process, we gently shift the focus away from trying to fix, control, or punish the other person and instead turn toward our own healing. In this episode, I share parts of my personal story, including how early family dynamics shaped my understanding of loyalty and relationship, and how betrayal showed up in my own marriage. Daniel sits down with astrologer, teacher, and longtime mentor Jim Sher, whose influence helped shape the foundation of Timeless Spirituality itself.Jim shares his own journey, from growing up within rigid belief systems to discovering astrology, depth psychology, and what he describes as a deeper alignment with one's true nature. The discussion moves beyond astrology as prediction and into its role as a tool for self-awareness, intention, and personal evolution. They examine faith not as something tied to religion, but as an internal congruence with one's authentic self. Along the way, Daniel and Jim wrestle openly with profound questions about free will, fate, universal consciousness, and whether our choices are truly ours, or simply part of something larger unfolding through us.Part 1 focuses on the inner journey: identity, belief, and the unfolding of consciousness at the individual level. In Part 2, the conversation expands outward, exploring Pluto, collective transformation, and why the changes happening in the world today may be part of a much larger evolutionary process.Jim's links:Website:https://www.sherastrology.com/about/welcome/Book:https://www.amazon.com/Astrology-Spiritual-Path-Birth-Human/dp/B0CVSM8SF1/ref=sr_1_1?crid=OD6FC7J1ZIBK&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.q2YkmBkKQu_0IYjqjNNvUthq_DfxfqHCVI3-xSWC1eNAufrqaH1LFYHGDmw5IkcDjY-XwK8D4lxxGPqhDwNWgx8tY9uOJ05fbuasK0gvuiLSCFQK0t_OApXU5OKhgbZf4mDIANPg6CPoesZJf0_1QRwaWbyLgGfaRi8vTKkPfQZRV7rd6U8APG7phi-AZOCD4OySfnnNN-Ths2zvSrs-Gr_Hzdr8aG9ClWPFR-bzqsw.J9temKITBB8c4IZxeldbHFXgJS-6_tuDbyec1gc683Y&dib_tag=se&keywords=Astrology+as+a+spiritual+path&qid=1771307540&sprefix=astrology+as+a+spiritual+path%2Caps%2C224&sr=8-1

True spirituality is not about getting what you want or fixing the outside world, but learning to be okay inside by letting go of preferences, stored pain, and inner resistance. Reality unfolds through universal causes, not personal desires, and suffering comes from pitting yourself against what is. Enlightenment comes from witnessing your inner experiences without suppression, honoring all emotions, and living in harmony with, and selflessly serving, whatever life presents to  you. © Sounds True Inc. *This episode mentions suicide and may be triggering for some listeners.* This week, we hear from author, podcaster, and entrepreneur Theresa Bruno. After experiencing a profound loss that threatened to plunge her into complete despair, Theresa shares how through raw honesty and unwavering prayer, she discovered the strength to not only keep going, but to find hope amidst the wreckage. Next up, we talk with Reverend Joash Thomas, author, speaker, and tireless advocate for liberation, especially for those caught in the brutal grip of trafficking and all who suffer at the margins. The Reverend’s spiritual work centers on a justice-focused interpretation of Scripture, guiding us to envision a faith that unifies rather than separates, pleading for mercy for all of God’s precious souls. There’s an invitation in our darkest times.” - Theresa Bruno “I tried to be perfect, because I thought if I was perfect, then God would love me. But I never really understood what it meant at all to have any kind of intimacy with God.” - Theresa Bruno “I’ve tried to flip my prayers into thankfulness for whatever is provided, so I don’t feel like I live in a place of constant begging and beseeching. In order to live more fully into faith and less into fear, it requires dedicated practice.” - Theresa Bruno “Courage is like a burst. You have enough courage to do something. Resilience is that slow burn that gets stronger and stronger and rises and rises, and that builds with every little tiny step.” - Theresa Bruno “Grief, the way we deal with it, is such a jagged line. And everybody does grief differently. I know you can’t feel it or know it right now, but this is not your final moment. Your story is still being written.” - Theresa Bruno “I know that if it breaks my heart, it also breaks the heart of God. Who we see throughout the Bible is a God of justice and mercy. If something like sexual abuse or human trafficking is keeping the little children from coming to Jesus, then we need to remove those hindrances.” - Rev. Joash Thomas “Jesus coming down to earth is called the incarnation and that was physical, through which spiritual truths were made known. My hope for the church is to retrieve the physical good news while still holding onto the spiritual good news that we embody, and to fully proclaim both together so that it actually sounds like good news to people who are poor and oppressed.” - Rev. Joash Thomas “People read the Bible in very different ways, but we’re still united in Jesus, and we have to be united in Him to bring the good news to a world in need of good news today—a world full of injustice and oppression.” - Rev. Joash Thomas “We’re human beings with mistakes who don’t always get everything right. But at the same time, there’s also goodness in us because we’re all made in the image of God.” - Rev.
