If you've managed to watch any of the excellent seventh series of Black Mirror yet, you might have spotted our super sub Ben Bailey Smith popping up there... and just for you he's collared his fellow dystopians Charlie Brooker and Emma Corrin for a chat about the mind-bending anthology's latest iteration. Brooker is the writer and creator of the show, which has been sending sci-fi shivers down our spines since it first hit British TV screens in 2011, before going global with Netflix in 2016. So for over a decade, “it's all a bit Black Mirror” has been the phrase on everyone's lips whenever real-world technology makes another ever-so-slightly terrifying leap forward. Emma Corrin stars in episode three of the new series, ‘Hotel Reverie', in which a cutting-edge filmmaking technology called ReDream allows modern day actors to star in high-tech remakes of classic films. Actor Brandy (Issa Rae) steps into the world of a 1940s movie—where she meets Corrin's golden age star Dorothy. Charlie and Emma chat to Ben about Hotel Reverie and the rest of the brand new series. They talk golden age Hollywood, the shipping forecast, and erm... bowling? It goes places. Listen now for the whole story! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

California's Republican Party made significant strides in last November's elections, flipping some seats in the state legislature and helping Donald Trump do much better here than he did in 2016 and 2020, turning some districts red. But the party did lose several swing Congressional races. Now the California GOP has a new face at the top: longtime party activist and Trump supporter Corrin Rankin of Redwood City, who now resides in Stockton, who was just elected party chair. KCBS Political Reporter Doug Sovern spoke with California Republican Party Chair Corrin Rankin.

What's occurring Bookshelvers!?Well let me tell you what's been occurring here at Barks HQ for the last few weeks... Steve and Corrin have been buzzing about their interview with the amazing Jenifer A. Zeligs Ph.D. and are so happy to get it out in the world. As many of you know Steve has been on a philisophical mission to get to the bottom of what the "art" is in Dog Training. Ever since learning about Jenifer and reading her book "Mindful Partners" we've been dying to talk to her and this week those dreams came true. This book had a profound affect on Steve and has actually refocused his thoughts on how to approach Dog training over the last year so, it was an absolute pleasure to talk to Jenifer and explore her journey in animal training. The discussion highlights the "Art" of training, the influence of Buddhism, and practical applications for all trainers. We explore how she successfully married the integration of mindfulness and psychological principles within the book. We chat about the complexities of behaviour, the importance of building trust and relationships with animals, and the role of reinforcement in training. Jenifer also shares insights on managing fear in animals, the significance of empathy, and the concept of the relationship bank account in fostering positive interactions. Putting HUGE weight on the importance of understanding animal perspectives, the power of mindfulness, and the role of choice as a motivator. Zeligs highlights the significance of prevention in training, the art of balancing science and intuition, and the necessity of effective communication through body language. We also talk about Jenifer's take on the ethical divides in animal training and the importance of finding common ground to foster better relationships with animals. This one goes DEEP!On top of all that goodness we also have a look into Corrin and Steve's recent "date night" where they (almost) met a famous person. We talked Nanobots, wild household invaders AND premier a newly commissioned song written by the fabulous Grant Sharkey. What on earth are you waiting for???? How the devil are you lovely Bookshelvers?!The dust has now settled after another fabulous DOGX and with Nat away on her holidays and corrin run off her feet it falls to Steve to host this episode SOLO (what could go wrong?). Luckily Nat and Corrin were around when we interviewed the wonderful, awesome, trail blazing human that is Gwen Bailey about her book The Perfect Puppy. We discuss her journey in dog training, the evolution of her book 'The Perfect Puppy', and the changes in training techniques over the years. She reflects on her experiences in kennels, the importance of communication with dog owners, and the impact of her work on the dog training landscape. The team and Gwen also delve into the complexities of dog training, discussing the challenges of reaching puppy owners, the impact of educational resources like books as well as the flexibility of training curriculums, and the significance of consent-based handling. We sing from the rafters about the importance of collaboration among training organisations and explore the fundamental qualities that make a good dog trainer. On top of all that we have a segment of interviews Steve did running around at lunch time at DOGX (where he mentions potatoes at least 500 times). Enjoy!Gwen Facts:Gwen worked for a leading UK national animal welfare charity from 1988-2002 and pioneered the use of dog behaviour knowledge in the rehoming of unwanted animals. She was the first person to be appointed by a national animal welfare charity as a full time Animal Behaviourist, eventually heading a team of behaviourists.Gwen has successfully solved behaviour problems in thousands of rehomed dogs, helping to prevent dogs with behavioural problems being passed from home to home and improving the rehoming success rate.Gwen has lectured at national and international conferences, run training courses for staff at animal charities around the world and has written many books & education leaflets. She is a past Chair of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors and a past Trustee for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.In 2003, Gwen founded and now runs Puppy School, a large network of professionally-trained puppy tutors which is a Practitioner Member of the Animal Behaviour and Training Council. Puppy School tutors have collectively helped to have a positive training impact on more than 100,000 puppies and their owners, and continue to run excellent classes around the country. As many of you already know, Linda will be crossing the Atlantic and speaking at the DOGx 2024 conference this October. You'll get a glimpse into the “force of nature” that is Linda Michaels during this interview as we discuss her origins, the decisions and processes that led to the book itself, the development of the Hierarchy of Dog Needs, activism and some, good old psychology as well. We also get a taster of what's to come at DOGx. There really isn't enough words to describe Linda's role in moving the dog training and behaviour world forward so you'll just have to listen. On top of all that Corrin, Nat and Steve talk through the book and answer your Bookshelver questions in their own rambling style.   Linda Facts:Linda Michaels, M.A., Psychology, author of the ground-breaking, best-seller, The Do No Harm Dog Training and Behaviour Handbook— Featuring the Hierarchy of Dog Needs pioneers the “First, Do No Harm” ethics approach in dog training. With an advanced degree in psychology and animal behaviour, research conducted in behavioural neurobiology, and five years of shelter and rescue experience, Linda's work bridges a gap between science, dog trainers, and pet parents with hands-on skills with dogs, wolfdogs, and the famed Belyaev foxes. Linda tells us, “My shelter experience working with the most difficult behavioural cases helped lay the foundation for all of the work I do today in animal care and training, protecting both the physical and the emotional well-being of the heartbeats at our feet.”Linda is considered one of the modern-era, trailblazing experts and influencers in canine behaviour consulting and animal welfare advocacy. Her internationally acclaimed Hierarchy of Dog Need teaching tool, now translated into 14 languages, is endorsed by canine scientists and ethologists as well as trainers, new and seasoned, and is available FREE. The Hierarchy of Dog Needs offers a clear, dog-centric alternative to the outdated, teaching paradigms widely used today. The Do No Harm Dog Training and Behaviour Handbook combines compassion with science in an easy-to-follow roadmap to success, providing answers to common and complex dog behaviour problems. She discusses the origins of respectability politics and its initial purpose to advance the black community, as well as key figures such as W.E.B. Du Bois. Morgan and Corrin argue that we should bring back shame, as we are currently a very shameless generation and the social climate is very anti-shame. She believes that shame is the clause in the social contract that keeps you from utter foolishness. Morgan has generated a list of things that conscious, empowered black people should be aware of, and if they were to participate, they should be ashamed of themselves.
