It's August 21, 1982, and Dave and Milt are back in the Time Machine, swimming in the Billboard Top 10 like it's the world's most awkward pool party. Chicago is apologizing all over the place with “Hard to Say I'm Sorry,” Fleetwood Mac is politely asking you to “Hold Me,” and Survivor is still living off that “Eye of the Tiger” Rocky money. Along the way, we detour into soda-related TikTok challenges (yes, apparently Sprite is dangerous now), celebrity death news (spoiler: not good news), and listener emails that range from insightful to “are you sure you hit send on the right show?” You'll also get trivia, remakes, a live “Kids in America” cameo from Billy Joe Armstrong, and a heated swap-out session where we boot some Top 10 squatters in favor of better songs from the same era. We break down Chicago's yacht-rock-adjacent apology, Fleetwood Mac's post-breakup awkward magic, and Steve Miller's “Abracadabra” (spoiler: it's about bras). Then it's all Mellencamp all the time—his name changes, his childhood surgery, his failed acting gigs, and yes, the time Mark Wahlberg tried to rap “Hurt So Good” for reasons unknown to mankind. By the time we get to “Eye of the Tiger,” we've covered Paul Anka swing covers, the movie Swingers (which is not about what you think), and every ridiculous tangent your mother warned you about. We close with some song swaps, listener feedback, and a reflection on how the early '80s somehow made both syrupy ballads and aggressive workout anthems coexist on the same chart without anyone's head exploding. Comedian Lucas Waterfill is a rising star in the Indianapolis comedy scene. His work mixes autobiographical storytelling with sharp social commentary. Waterfill was born with cerebral palsy and he uses his experiences navigating the world with a disability as a springboard for his comedy.  Waterfill's latest project “Up All the Nights” is a play, co-written with Blake Mellencamp. “Up All the Nights” will be premiering this month at Indy Fringe. The play is described as a “hilarious look at navigating life with a disability. ‘Up All the Nights' translates Waterfill's experiences to the stage, showing life in a world that's not designed with you in mind and emphasizing the importance of building community within a harsh political climate.” “Up All the Nights” will be staged daily at Indy Fringe from August 16-24. Listen to an interview with Waterfill and Mellencamp as they discuss the inspiration behind “Up All the Nights.”

Should Pop Stars Evangelize Politics from the Stage or “Shut Up and Sing!”?

Should stars use concert stages and football fields as platforms for their politics or policy activism? John Cougar Mellencamp made news this week for leaving the stage after being challenged by his fans to “just play music!” rather than proselytizing his public policy views from the stage. Jacki is joined by Jeff Fisher of “Chewing the Fat with Jeff Fisher” to discuss. Jacki argues that the stage and field are not the *performer's* platform, and that having to suffer through Mellencamp's sermon should be a breach of contract for a ticket purchaser who thought they were exchanging big dollars for a performance of “Hurts So Good!”

By 1983, John Mellencamp had finally gotten the upper hand on his career. After the success of his breakthrough album, 1982's American Fool, he had all the cards in his deck to change the game when it came to his relationship with the music business executives who had tried to control him from the start, over six years earlier.  For his seventh studio album, Uh Huh, he did just that. Released in the fall of '83, t is the first album that bears his last name, an important step toward freeing himself of artistic shackles. Uh Huh was another success for Mellencamp on the charts, and one of its charting singles could be viewed as his mission statement: a song that encapsulates not only his battle with the folks in the corner offices who tried to dictate his career but the very spirit of the man himself.    In a sit down interview on Don Lemon's new show, Elon Musk doubles down on something nobody is talking about.  All these illegal aliens in America are ALREADY swaying the elections toward Democrats.  Musk also told Lemon everyone is a descendant of a slave and we need to move past it.  Wow.    The Supreme Court is hearing arguments in the Murthy v Missouri case that's trying to prevent the government from interfering in free speech as the Biden administration did working with big tech to suppress the Hunter Biden laptop and keep actual Covid information from the public that they deemed unworthy.    Singer John Mellencamp has turned into America's worst human.  He's miserable, won't stand for the anthem and hates his audiences made up of Trump voters.  Wait until you hear what this classless singer did in Ohio Sunday night.   Harrison Butker, on the other hand, may be America's best human.  He did an interview with EWTN Catholic TV and everyone in our great country should hear it.    The New York Post is counting how much money Travis Kelce is spending to date Taylor Swift, an olathe man snags a world record fish and it's time to cut down a certain tree in your back yard.  I'll tell you which one.
