Today, I'm sharing my conversation with Teri Patterson, host of The Sober Edge Podcast. This is part of her coaching series. She and I met in the This Naked Mind training and I'm actually her coach! I encouraged her to start her podcast, so it was so fun to be a guest of hers. Teri and I really dive into the Tiny Habits concept and BJ Fogg's Behavior Model, which I've spoken about on this podcast before. She asks me some thought-provoking questions about these topics and I really explain how his framework allows for deeper awareness and understanding, which are major players in an EXIT from drinking. Here is what we talk about:Habits and CoachingWhat Do People Get Wrong About Habits? The Behavior Change Master PlanTiny Habits & Tiny Habit RecipesIt was so great to share my thoughts and knowledge on Tiny Habits and the Behavior Model with Teri, and I hope she got just as much out of it as I did from learning about it originally! Thanks for listening! I'm wrapping up my series on the Tiny Habits book and process! Today's episode is all about going through some activities that act as tools within this process. These tools will assist you in really diving into your EXIT and allowing you to identify the behaviors that hold the key to positive change. While these activities are easy to do, they can have a significant impact on how you look at where you can make changes in order to pursue the life that you want to live. How exciting is that? Here is what I cover in this episode:Defining Your AspirationExploring Behavior OptionsFocus MappingI've used these tools myself to facilitate my own EXIT, so I can tell you firsthand how useful they are in taking a step away from the drinking cycle. As I continue my series on the Tiny Habits book and training by BJ Fogg, I'm covering a new topic today: ability. This episode is all about ability, the ability chain, and specific prompts you can ask yourself here.I have a deep-seated belief in the Tiny Habits book and BJ Fogg's behavior model, and the ability piece is just as important as the past elements I've covered! The ability chain is an interesting aspect of the model, and I dive into the different pieces of it in this episode. Here is what I cover in this episode:Understanding the Ability ChainPrompts Surrounding Ability Taking the time to uncover your thoughts through the prompts I provide on this episode will ignite your curiosity surrounding the way you currently operate and relate to alcohol. We hear the term motivation a lot, but what does it actually mean? And furthermore, can it help us reach our goals, particularly when it comes to making our EXIT from drinking? Understanding motivation and how unreliable it is when used alone to achieve a goal is of paramount importance when it comes to understanding BJ Fogg's behavior model. That's what I talk about in today's episode, which dives further into the Tiny Habits book and training that I'm a strong believer in.Here is what I cover in this episode:Motivation as an Unreliable Way of Helping OurselvesWhat I've Learned About MotivationQuestions for You About MotivationGaining an understanding of motivations, competing motivations, and how they interact with our thoughts, prompts, and actions will help you to better pursue your EXIT from the drinking life. So often, we have the urge to push away our emotions, especially when dealing with substance abuse issues. In fact, that could be a lot of the reason we decide to drink, because it's a way to “take the edge off” of our emotions. But, I've come to learn that trusting myself to feel and experience my emotions has made a world of difference in living my epic life.Understanding our behaviors is the first step in changing your approach to your emotions and beginning to unblock your EXIT. That's what I talk about in today's episode, which focuses a lot on the Tiny Habits book and training that I'm a strong believer in.Here is what I cover in this episode:Getting Rid of the Need to “Take the Edge Off”The Tiny Habits Behavior ModelThe Phases of the Behavior Change Master PlanIt's really not about getting rid of any behaviors, but rather, untangling them to gain a better understanding of them. That's what I want to help you to do in order to reach a better place in trusting yourself to feel and experience your emotions. Thanks for listening! I talk a lot about you making your EXIT and utilizing the EXIT methodology to do so. But, do you really understand what that means or what the strategy associated with it is? That's what I want to fill you in on in today's episode. When we don't have a strategy, that's when we end up floundering in our efforts to stop drinking. But the EXIT strategy helps you unblock your exit and make the change you've been yearning for. Here are the different components of the EXIT strategy that I go over:Examine, Explore, & ExperimentX OutIgnite CuriosityTrust Yourself to Figure Things OutMove Your BodyHelp Your Brain Chill OutThese six components of the EXIT strategy are key in helping you take a new approach to your EXIT: an approach that works! You didn't think it could happen in your own home, did you?Or that it could be the child you know from across the street? How about the boy or girl whose face gets lost in the crowd because they don't have a family and a solidified place to call home?Human trafficking is all around us, and it is not just an international battle that we're facing. Right here, right in front of us, it's prevalent and we need to be more aware, start having those conversations with our kids, and look out for signs.January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Every year since 2010, the President has dedicated the month to raising awareness about the different forms of human trafficking, also known as modern slavery, and educating people about this crime and how to spot it.I want to really bring this forward and remove the stigma surrounding human trafficking, so I invited this week's guest, Catharine Paterno, to join me in this conversation and provide her own knowledge and experience. She is dedicated to serving all the families and children she meets and is beyond thrilled to be working for Opportunity. Cat is devoted to providing families with the support and resources they need to create happy, healthy, and safe environments for their children. With the right resources at our disposal and this newfound knowledge from this podcast episode, you will know what signs to look out for and to help prevent human trafficking. On this episode of Exit The Drinking Life Podcast, I'm conveying just how much the words we tell ourselves impact our ability to exit the drinking life. The word “can't” makes it into our vocabulary far too often, prompting us to feel deprived, restricted, and all out miserable. When we're giving up drinking, we need to hack our brains and replace the “can'ts” with all of the positive reasons we're looking to make a change. Some of the topics and questions raised in this episode are:Words evoke certain emotionsPost-Traumatic Restriction Disorder (PTRD)Changing the words inside your head I hope that this episode ignites your curiosity around the way you're talking to yourself and what the words you use mean for your attitude towards your own exit strategy. On this episode of Exit The Drinking Life Podcast, I'm sharing my revelations on how nothing outside of us actually creates the feelings that exist inside of us. The reality is that we create our feelings and the experiences of our lives through our own thoughts and actions. There are so many feelings that society imposes on us, dictating that we “should” feel a certain way when XYZ happens. But what happens when the opposite is true? I explore that here, along with how you can change your thoughts around alcohol throughout your EXIT journey. Some of the topics and questions raised in this episode are:The power of reframing our thoughts Reliance on alcohol to dictate feelings Challenging yourself to think differently I hope that this episode ignites your curiosity around the way you're approaching your feelings and how you alter them with the power of your thoughts and mindset. As you make your EXIT from drinking, it can be hard to imagine who you'll be or how you'll be happy without your beverage of choice. But approaching your feelings and thoughts differently can go a long way in easing these worries. Thanks for listening! On this episode of Exit The Drinking Life Podcast, I'm questioning what you view as your drinking identity and whether it's currently serving you. While many of us realize that we want alcohol to stop being so important to us, we fail to realize that the current drinking identity we harbor keeps us from attaining the freedom we desire. Some of the topics and questions raised in this episode are:How does focusing on where you don't want to be, rather than where you do want to be, impact the way you see yourself and approach your goals? Is taking your current identity into the future with you sabotaging your success?Recognizing the cycle of experimenting, acting out, igniting curiosity, and trusting yourself to achieve the ultimate goal: the exit. The importance of naming your current alcohol identity and questioning if you want to keep it.I hope that this episode motivated you to really examine what your current drinking identity is and whether it's something that can help prompt the permanent transformation that you seek.
