Did you know that Cornell Johnson has the largest Executive MBA program in the United States with four distinct flavors? I didn't, but let's learn together about Johnson's EMBA program, its unique distributed classroom, and how to get in from its dean and director. [SHOW SUMMARY] Welcome to the 506th episode of Admission Straight Talk, Accepted's podcast. Thanks for tuning in. Before I dive into today's interview, I want to invite you to download Ace the EMBA, expert advice for the rising executive. This free guide will compliment today's podcast and give you suggestions on how to choose the right EMBA program for you, differentiate yourself from your competition in a positive way and present yourself effectively as a future business leader, who will bring credit to any program that accepts you. It gives me great pleasure to have for the first time on Admissions Straight Talk, Dean Mark Nelson, the Anne and Elmer Lindseth Dean and Professor of Accounting at Cornell Johnson Graduate School of Management, and Dr. Manoj Thomas, Senior Director of EMBA and MSBA programs, and the Nakashimato Professor of Marketing, also at Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management. Dr. Nelson and Dr. Thomas, welcome to Admissions Straight Talk. [Dean Mark Nelson] Thanks for having us. [Dr. Manoj Thomas] Thank you, Linda, delighted to be here. Dean Nelson, what makes a Cornell Executive MBA program different from other EMBA programs? [1:55] [Dean Mark Nelson] That's a great question, Linda. I mean, first off is the fact that we have these four different flavors of a Cornell MBA. And that's very intentional, it's been developed over time. We started initially with our Metro EMBA program, which is based in New York City, and which is focused on a general management EMBA, providing that jurisdiction, that market. Second, then we have our Americas EMBA program, and that's a really unique program where we're reaching out to executives throughout the Americas using our own unique approach to distributed learning. And then third, we created an FMBA program, a collaboration with Tsinghua University, a finance-focused EMBA, and that's bilingual and offered in Beijing. And then fourth, we have our MBA/MS in Healthcare Leadership program, which is providing both an EMBA and also an MS in healthcare from two great institutions, the Johnson School and the Weill Cornell Medicine. And so I go through that because the unique combination here is that we've got a general interest EMBA in New York, we've got something focused in the healthcare sector, we've got something that's a unique and leading program in China, and then this Americas program serving the Americas. And I see that as a pretty special and unique roster of great EMBA programs. Now, when you think about what's the spine that relates all these together, there's a couple things that I'd shout out, and then I'd maybe ask my colleague, Manoj, if there's anything he wants to add in. One is that in all of these programs, we have a team-based learning approach that we think is really, really important. And by that I mean that we have students that, of course they're performing individually, but they're also on small teams, they're coached, they're assessed, they're given feedback. So we think of business as a team sport, and the ability of these executives to deliver exceptionally well in that context, we think it's really important and so we're very intentional about how we go about that approach. It is the case that in all of these programs, the students are working on problems that they're addressing at work right now, so they're able to put it into practice, and we think that team-based approach is really key. And I guess the other thing that is unique, not only about the EMBA programs but about Cornell is that we have our Cornell Tech campus in New York City. So we are based in Ithaca, New York, but what a lot of people don't realize is that we won the oppo...

He also discusses some of the requirements associated with becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in New York including how many clinical hours were needed back in 2006 when he received his license. He discusses some of the philosophies and methodologies used in the field of psychology and which ones he uses in his practice. Finally, he talks about his practice, spiral2grow Marriage and Family Therapy, and how it has evolved through the years and how it is different from other psychological practices. Around the 32-minute mark in the podcast, Moshe offers specific advice for those wanting to start their own business or their own practice. Susan Linke, MBA, MS, RD, LD, and CLT is an award-winning registered and licensed dietitian, Certified LEAP Therapist (CLT) and Certified Gluten Practitioner (CGP). Because of Susan's extensive training in adverse food reactions, and the practical application of dietary treatment for food-sensitive patients, we will discuss symptoms that might be caused by a food sensitivity, how to identify the offending foods and what to do. Next, we will discuss Aloe vera with Jack Brown from Lily of the Desert. It is that time of year when our skin can take a beating…Aloe to the rescue! We will cover the many reasons to use it and how. (I'll also reveal the secret recipe for the facial toner I make and how to soothe pets who get “hot spots”.) Lily of the Desert is celebrating its 50th anniversary and is the top Aloe in the natural products industry, so they must be doing something right (a lot of things actually). My FREE Aloe vera book. UPDATE from the newsletter: HR5 is pending legislation that calls for an unprecedented federal government overreach. Lurking in it are horrifying sacrifices of parental and religious choices as well as some pure nonsense. Nicotine addiction is coming back with a vengeance. With e-cigarette companies like Juul capturing the attention of teens, we are experiencing the second wave of Big Tobacco through vaping. But what happens when a company’s mission statement and its actions are at odds? James Monsees and Adam Bowen, founders of Juul, were once Product Design Masters students here at Stanford. They claimed to have created a product that can transition smokers to their less harmful alternative, Juul. Although the product is used by ex-smokers, it is also used frequently by almost one million teens in the U.S. In this episode of Stanford SciCast, Ruth Adu-Daako, MBA-MS student and Brook Getachew, a former researcher on Juul, explore the relationship between design and ethics by using Juul as a case study. To understand this link, they interview Dr. Robert Jackler, head of the Stanford Research into the Impact of Tobacco Advertising, James Patell, a Herbert Hoover Professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Ken Shotts, a professor of Ethics and Political Economy at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and a teen Juul user. Through these interviews, Ruth and Brook explore the balance between innovation and creating a product that, whether intentional or not, harms younger users. To learn more about the history of Juul, visit http://tobacco.stanford.edu/tobacco_main/publications/JUUL_Marketing_Stanford.pdf *Note: This episode was produced before the recent illnesses and deaths linked to vaping. The increasing demand for energy in emerging markets is a leading driver for international development. This demand results in increased need for environmental sustainability. In this short audio lecture, Katie Hill discusses the tension between economic development and environmental sustainability. Learn how companies can push through this tradeoff while lowering energy costs and reducing business risks. Hill explains how supply chains bases in Asia and Africa attract investments in affordable clean energy and factory efficiency. In this Social Innovation Conversations, Stanford University podcast, Hill describes the economic challenges manufacturers face with energy in emerging markets, such as Kenya, compared to in the U.S.. This contrast poses a compelling argument for the use of renewable energy in factories around the world to lower energy costs and further responsible economic development. Katie Hill received a joint MBA/MS in Environmental Science at Stanford University in 2012. Katie’s career is focused on energy infrastructure and natural resources in emerging markets. Having spent six years living in Asia and Africa (India, China, Nepal, Uganda, Botswana), Katie has acquired a deep understanding of these markets. Prior to Stanford, she was the Energy Portfolio Manager for Acumen Fund, an impact investment fund, where she evaluated more than 300 clean technology businesses and managed $4 million in investments. Katie has also worked for McKinsey & Company, Generation Investments, Dalberg Advisors and the China Greentech Initiative. https://ssir.org/podcasts/entry/why_small_does_not_equal_powerless
