What's behind the rise and rise of low alcohol and alcohol free drinks? The sector grew by a quarter last year alone, fuelled by our changing relationship with alcohol. More than fifteen million people are thought to have considered taking part in Dry January this year and younger drinkers in particular are turning away from alcohol and embracing alcohol-free versions of beer, wine and spirits or entirely new drinks coming onto the market. In this programme Jaega Wise considers the changes in the drinks industry. She eavesdrops on an alcohol-free workshop with the mindful drinking movement Club Soda and speaks to its founder Laura Willoughby. She hears from the alcohol-free beer brand Lucky Saint and the market research company Kam on our changing drinking patterns, including the trend for zebra-striping - alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Then Jaega visits Bristol to find out how breweries are using different techniques to make alcohol-free beer that is far superior to the much-derided watery and flavourless versions of old. The Bristol Beer Factory tells her that their alcohol-free brand now makes up a fifth of sales. At Wiper & True nearby, they reckon within five years around half of all their beers will be alcohol-free.The movement towards "low and no" drinks means there is now a World Alcohol Free Awards as their co-founder Chrissie Parkinson explains and Dash Lilley from the Three Spirit brand talks about how some drinks makers are looking to very different ingredients from the plant world to create original flavours.Presented by Jaega Wise Produced in Bristol for BBC Audio by Robin Markwell

Laura Willoughby from Club Soda joins Veronica to discuss how the alcohol market has changed and continues to change. They start by remembering what drinking was like for them in the 1990's, how they were encouraged as women to drink until they passed out. They then look at how much the culture has shifted, with young people either choosing not to drink or drinking occasionally. Laura explains that the alcohol-free market is continuing to expand and that, yes, you can get a good alcohol-free wine. Because of these changes, how we socialise has changed a lot, with people wanting to have experiences and food rather than just drinking to get drunk. They end by emphasising how important it is to have alcohol-free spaces and how they are growing in England, America and even France. To learn more, visit the show notes. "You wouldn't have wanted to have been my friend when I was at school," says Club Soda Founder, Laura Willoughby. " I'd have had you doing all sorts of things." Laura describes herself as a doer: "When I see a problem, I want to fix it." That level of drive has seen her career move in a number of different directions, but always with politics and social change playing some role. In this episode of the Career Conversations series, recorded in front of a live audience at our Inspiring Careers in Food event, she reveals all about her journey. It started with student politics, progressed to a powerful role in local politics, and even saw her dabble in Westminster politics. Throughout all of that, alcohol was a feature.  Laura says she never got to the stage where she needed help, but says she started to bore herself and found she was drinking without even thinking about it. After a period of turning up to pubs with teabags so she had something intersting to drink whilst still socialising, she decided to start Club Soda. It's all about promoting non-alcoholic options that are designed for adults and still serve as a treat ("cola poured from a hose is not a treat," she says). Club Soda has gone from success to success and that is largely down to Laura's committment, can-do attitude, and an unwavering desire for change. Listen to the full episode to find out about the latest exciting evolution in the Club Soda journey, why Laura did not particularly enjoy university, and her unlikely connection to the Premier League football club, Arsenal. Taste testing non-alcoholic drinks... something we'd not have had much fun with until fairly recently. The rise of the adult-oriented non-alcoholic drink here in Britain has been swift. Laura Willoughby, the founder of Club Soda Guide and the Mindful Drinking Festival, says their website now lists 1,000 non-alcoholic options from 600 producers, many of which are operating here in the UK.There's undoubtedly an irony to the fact that Britain, once the international poster boy for bad drinking behaviour, appears to be leading the non-alcoholic drinks movement. However, as Laura explains in this podcast, that's certainly the exciting situation we find ourselves in. Not only is our relationship with alcohol evolving, but the infrastructure is being updated, too. Aside from the growing legions of non-alcoholic drinks producers, the likes of Holland & Barrett are kitting out their nationwide stores with shelves dedicated to the Sober Curious.Inevitably, Laura has become something of a connoisseur when it comes to that wide selection. So we raided her non-alcoholic drinks cabinet one recent lunchtime and took a collection of 12 bottles down into a podcasting studio that looked a little like a 1980s nuclear fallout shelter. Over a liquid smorgasbord, we discussed the rise of this movement, the great work that Club Soda are doing, the latest non-drinking stats and how to make your local pub really work for you.Chin chin.

Quitting drinking is both a personal and a political act. In this episode, Ruby talks to Club Soda UK founder Laura Willoughby about reconnecting with her activist roots through sobriety, and how drinking in the face of adversity is a sure-fire way to give away your agency and personal power. Laura shares her drinking history as a young politico who became disillusioned with the system, as well as her journey creating one of the biggest sober / sober curious communities both on and offline. In this episode we also discuss: -Living life in “high def” – and feeling all your feelings. -How alcohol changes the wiring in your brain. -The lasting impact of ladette culture and hard drinking being seen as “feminist." -Drinking dreams and what they mean. -How to create and host your own sober meetups. -Navigating the booming alcohol-free drinks industry. -Not drinking as an act of rebellion (and how to be a non-drinker and still fit in). -Embracing shades of grey when it comes to quitting. Laura Willoughby of Club Soda and Chris Beech of Luhv Drinks arrived in the studio to inspire us with some great alternatives to the hard stuff. In such a health-focused time, more and more people are giving up alcohol during the week or abstaining altogether. Ollie reveals that nearly a quarter of millennials don't drink at all, so what are the alternatives? The consensus in the studio is that consumers are ill-served when in bars, restaurants and pubs with a disappointing selection of non-alcoholic drinks. Laura is on a mission to give inspiring ideas and support to those who want to socialise and 'fit in' when on the wagon. Meanwhile Chris explains how is dedicated to producing plant-based drinks and juices which are good for the heart, skin and mind.
