And you have a powerful one through your social media.” Paula Cornell - Love JusticeThis quote was from a recent blog post on the Love Justice website, where you can read stories of real people whose monitors prevented them from completing their slavery journey. It is estimated that 50 million people are trapped in slavery today. Most often, this happens when people are offered an opportunity they can't refuse. In this episode, I will talk to Briony Fickling, who works for Love Justice as Regional Steward for Southern African countries. She will share her journey working with Love Justice as they work to:  Step in during critical moments between freedom and slavery.Prevent the next victim from being trafficked Put Traffickers in jailShare the love & hope of JesusTo learn more about Love Justice International and Human Trafficking, you can go to LoveJustice.ngo

WARNING: Today's episode contains graphic content about human trafficking and could be a trigger for people who have experienced abuse or violence at the hands of another. January is National Slavery & Human Trafficking Prevention month. It is difficult to hear the atrocities of human trafficking and its impact on human lives. My guest, Sandy Storm, shares the numerous challenges she faced throughout the twenty years she was exploited and dehumanized, she also shares how during those difficult years, she believed God had a plan for her life. Could any good come from someone so broken? Yes!!! Sandy cried out to God, handing him her broken life. He graciously exchanged her brokenness with salvation wrapped in His unfailing love. Her healing and restoration led her to the realization God made her a new creation. Filled with this life-changing news, Sandy drew close to Him. Remember Joseph's reply to his brothers? He said, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish the saving of many lives.” God whispered the same words to her and said He preserved her during those horrific years, so she could be a part of the solution to ending human trafficking. Thus, Sandy is a modern-day abolitionist and serves as the Director of Strategic impact for Deliver Fund, a non-profit whose mission is to keep communities safe by bringing human traffickers to justice. Her experiences and knowledge make her a powerful warrior who IS helping to destroy the darkness in our world. Her three novellas based on her experiences – Becoming Navi, Hello Navi, and Goodbye Navi – are available on Amazon. To learn more about Sandy or connect with her, visit her website at authorsandystorm.com. If you are interested in learning more about Deliver Fund's efforts to end human trafficking or joining their prayer team, please visit deliverfund.org.If you are being trafficked or know someone who is, the Human Trafficking hotline is 1-888-373-7888. On this week's show, your host, Justin Mog, highlights the fact that January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Awareness Month with our guest, Dr. Theresa Hayden, Treasurer of the People Against Trafficking Humans (PATH) Coalition of Kentucky (http://pathcoalitionofky.org). Their mission is to foster awareness, one step at a time, by educating and equipping everyone to understand, identify and reduce the risk of human trafficking through educational programming. Led by a Board of Directors, PATH works with academic, community, and faith-based organizations in an effort to raise awareness. PATH offers educational sessions on Human Trafficking 101, Digital Safety for Youth and Young Adults, and other topics related to understanding the impacts of human trafficking in modern day society. PATH was born in 2013 when a few Sisters of Charity of Nazareth (SCN) began a public prayer service during Derby Week because of the SCN Corporate Stance against Human Trafficking. Officially designated as a 501(c)3 in 2015, PATH strives to become the leading education and awareness organization in Kentucky regarding human trafficking. In January, 2010 the President dedicated the month of January to raising awareness about the different forms of human trafficking, also known as modern slavery, and educating people about this crime and how to spot it. Media coverage in Louisville around the 1st Saturday of May invariably includes a reference to sexual human trafficking incidents. While it is important the public be informed this type of criminal activity occurs in our backyard, it is more important they be informed that it occurs year-round and that trafficking includes more than just sexual based incidents. * Calculate your own Slavery Footprint at https://slaveryfootprint.org/ * PATH is co-sponsoring a Cross-Cultural Hospitality Training with La Casita Center, Thursday, January 19th, 11am-1pm, online (Register by Tuesday, Jan. 17th at http://bit.ly/3V0m3WH) - a training focused on cultural sensitivity for those providing services to a diverse and multicultural audience, including info on local cultural awareness, and tools for best practices based on the first-hand experience of a local non-profit for the immigrant and Latinx community. * UofL will be hosting a Human Trafficking 101 Workshop on Tuesday, January 24th, 5-7pm, online. Welcome to RIMScast. Your host is Justin Smulison, Business Content Manager at RIMS, the Risk and Insurance Management Society.   January is internationally recognized as Human Trafficking Awareness Month. In this episode, RIMScast is taking its annual deep dive into this ever-present risk with Marisa Trasatti.   Marisa is a Partner at Cipriani & Werner and General Counsel to Sciton. As a defense lawyer, Marisa has defended hotel channels that were named as defendants in civil suits and significant trafficking claims. You may also recognize Marisa from her previous appearances at several RIMS events, including RISKWORLD, on the topic of human trafficking.   With the International Labour Organization estimating that there are 27.6 million people enslaved globally with 19.9 million victims of labor trafficking, 1.4 million held in domestic servitude, and 6.3 million victims of sex trafficking, it is no question whether trafficking is a global emergency. And unfortunately, corporations can oftentimes become unwitting participants in human trafficking just by being in business.   As difficult as this subject can be to hear about, it is a critical one that risk professionals need to hear about in order to protect their organizations and better spot the signs of human trafficking. Be sure to tune in to not miss out on this important dialogue with Marisa Trasatti.   Key Takeaways: [:01] About the RIMS Membership. [:14] Registration for RISKWORLD 2023 is now open! [4:48] How Marisa came to be acquainted with RIMS. [5:24] What can businesses (that are unwitting participants in human trafficking) do to protect against human trafficking? [14:18] Marisa shares her predictions and insights based on new legal developments regarding human trafficking. [15:24] Is the Ghislaine Maxwell verdict sending a message to traffickers/would-be traffickers? Is it a deterrent? [16:40] shares a story from a former FBI agent about labor-trafficked victims [19:05] Risk management and ESG initiatives that Marisa finds to be effective deterrents to trafficking. [22:15] RIMS plug time! All about upcoming RIMS virtual workshops. [23:00] Elise Farnham rejoins the podcast to discuss her two upcoming RIMS virtual workshops! [26:17] Does Marisa feel that human trafficking, though a huge issue, often gets put on the back burner by the world? [27:58] Marisa shares about Thorn, an organization with the goal of defending children from sexual abuse. Marisa explains why, in particular, Thorn sets such a good example from a moral, legal and ethical perspective. [31:32] Marisa speaks about a case regarding Section 230 and how it could influence the landscape of 2023. [36:00] Marisa shares her views on the new U.S. federal law, “Eliminating Limits to Justice for Child Sex Abuse Victims Act of 2022.” [41:22] Does Marisa find that she gets more media requests in January because it is Human Trafficking Awareness Month? Marisa also shares other events that have brought a spotlight to trafficking. [43:23] Why awareness around human trafficking needs to be year-round; not just in January. [44:13] Justin thanks Marisa Trasatti for joining the podcast and shares some links to check in today's show notes.   Mentioned in this Episode: RISKWORLD 2023 — April 30‒May 3 in Atlanta, Georgia! January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. The COVID-19 pandemic has done little to slow this form of modern-day slavery. Instead, traffickers have taken advantage of the global crisis to continue targeting adults and children. Airports are a key point of access for traffickers, who use airports - as well as other transportation hubs, including train and bus stations - to scout for and move their victims. PHL is committed to working with relevant agencies and organizations, including the U.S. Departments of Homeland Security (DHS) and Transportation (DOT), to address this horrible crime. Recognizing the signs of human trafficking is the first step in helping to stop it.   In this episode, Chellie is joined by PHL's Jason Sankey and Jonathan Todd to discuss how PHL employees and the public can help to spot, intervene, and stop human trafficking.    To learn more about the steps Philadelphia International Airport is taking to stop Human Trafficking and how you can help, please visit https://www.phl.org/newsroom/wearblue

Guest: Maria Trujillo   January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month nationwide.  Human Trafficking is the denial of someone's human rights to freedom and basic dignity.  It is the exploitation of someone through force, fraud and coercion for some type of labor or forced work.  It is not just sex trafficking but it could also be agriculture and door to door sales.  A lot of people do not realize that it is happening right here in Colorado.  Trafficking does not matter someone's age, race, or gender it can happen to anyone.  Mostly to people who are venerable.  Some of the misconceptions about human trafficking is all human trafficking is sex trafficking or that it only happens to women or girls.  The Colorado Human Trafficking Council has a campaign going on in January to help educate people on these myths. About Truckers Against Trafficking Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT) is a 501(c)3 that exists to educate, equip, empower and mobilize members of the trucking, bus and energy industries to combat human trafficking. Modern-day slavery, or human trafficking exists whenever people are bought and sold for forced labor or commercial sex. Around the world, it is estimated that there are over 40 million slaves today. Human trafficking has been reported in all 50 states, and the number of victims in the United States is estimated in the hundreds of thousands. While illegal, human trafficking is a booming business. Traffickers recruit out of our schools, online, in shopping malls, as well as the streets and other locations. A large percentage of the people trafficked are women and children. Many of them are used in the sex industry. They are the prostituted people on the street and in private homes, and in legitimate businesses such as restaurants, truck stops and motels. They need to be identified and recovered. Truckers Against Trafficking recognizes that members of the trucking, bus and energy industries are invaluable in the fight against this heinous crime. As the eyes and ears of our nation's highways, you are in a unique position to make a difference and close loopholes to traffickers who seek to exploit our transportation system for their personal gain. About Openforce Openforce is the leader in technology-driven services that reduce operating costs and mitigate risk for companies using independent contractors. Their cloud-based applications help companies and contractors alike achieve more sustainable, profitable growth by removing financial, operational, and compliance barriers to getting business done.

Welcome to RIMScast. Your host is Justin Smulison, Business Content Manager at RIMS, the Risk and Insurance Management Society.   Today’s guest is Tim Nelson, the International Development Director for Slave-Free Alliance and Hope for Justice. January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, but although the month has passed, it still does not mean the fight to end slavery is done.   In this episode, Tim talks about how human trafficking and slavery is a huge risk to company supply chains and businesses. Many people do not know what’s under their hood when it comes to the workers they hire. It is in the interest of everyone that you vet your third-party hiring or recruitment companies, facilities, and more. Tim shares how companies and individuals can spot the tale-tale signs of a human trafficked victim, how Hope for Justice was formed, and much more.   Key Takeaways: [:01] About RIMS’s Global Membership. [:28] About today’s episode. [:37] Current RIMS features, offerings, news, and events. [1:05] More about today’s episode with Tim Nelson. [1:45] Justin welcomes Tim to RIMScast! [1:55] Tim shares a bit about his background and what he does for Hope for Justice and Slave-Free Alliance. [4:10] Twenty-seven million people are held in slavery across the world and there is something you can do about this. We can end human trafficking in our lifetime. [4:40] Not every business takes slavery seriously, but there is a shift happening in our culture. [6:05] What makes a good or bad business? Do they have a protocol on what to do if they discover human trafficking happening in one of their factories? [7:25] Most companies are not doing enough due diligence. [8:50] What have governments been doing to respond/counter human trafficking? [10:33] Tim breaks down his process on how a company can see if their facilities are employee- and ethnically-friendly. [14:25] Some individuals are not even aware that they are a victim of slavery until you show them that their wages have been stolen/taken. [15:05] One woman had been a slave in the United States for 33 years. [18:15] How have human traffickers adapted to COVID-19? [19:38] Individuals are sold for as little as $100–$200. [21:40] Tim shares how Hope for Justice is expanding to help combat slavery throughout the U.S. [22:45] Recently, 33 children were rescued in California. Do Tim and his NGO help with police investigations? [26:05] Tim is faced with devastating stories on a regular basis; how does he emotionally cope while moving forward on this important work? [27:45] Hope for Justice is disrupting serious organized crime with a lot of money on the line and members of staff have been put in danger because of it. [29:25] Victims of slavery and human trafficking, unfortunately, return back to the very activities that made them victims (like prostitution). How can this be prevented? [33:33] How do Tim and his co-workers blow off steam and have fun outside of work? [35:45] You really do have the power to change the world. [36:15] Tim shares some final words of wisdom to the risk management community. Listener discretion advised. January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month so I’ve been interviewing a variety of nonprofit leaders—founders, ceos, and executive directors—who run organizations addressing the horrible evil of human trafficking. Today's guest is Natasha Paradeshi, the Co-Founder of The Landing, a drop-in center for survivors of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation in Houston, Texas. Whether providing them with an advocate, reaching out to them in the red light district, the folks at The Landing intend to meet people where they are—wherever it may be—and support them throughout their journey. In this interview, Natasha will share how she became interested in nonprofit service while she was a college student, and how her heart was stirred to action when she learned about the horrors of human trafficking at a conference. One of the gaps she recognized was the lack of identifying victims of human trafficking, so she and other co-founders established their first (and only...so far) “Drop-in Center” in the red light district of Houston. At The Landing, they seek to meet people where they are, honor their inherent dignity and worth, and walk alongside them on their journey. This organization was started out of the deep faith of the founders, and so as you might expect, it comes up. Whether or not you share her faith, you will LOVE hearing Natasha’s story and her passion for serving and identifying victims of human trafficking. The Landing offers a fair, just, and healthy culture of inclusion, diversity, and empowerment for all victims of human trafficking. As heavy as this topic is, I’m still excited for you to meet this amazing woman who is making a tangible difference in the lives of victims of human trafficking—even if they don’t yet realize they are being trafficked. You’re going to love Natasha Paradeshi, co-founder of The Landing in Houston Texas. https://yournonprofitlife.com/s2e03-natasha-paradeshi

PATH stand for People Against Trafficking Humans What is human trafficking? Human trafficking is the trade of humans for the purpose of forced labour, sexual slavery, or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or others. This may encompass providing a spouse in the context of forced marriage, or the extraction of organs or tissues, including for surrogacy and ova removal. It is happening all over the world whether you are aware of it or not. If you live in a small town or a large city, be aware that human trafficking could be taking place in your neighborhood. If you have questions or concerns about activity that is taking place in your neighborhood, contact a local police agency or reach out to a local PATH organization. The PATH Enrichment Center in Buffalo has many programs and services available to help individuals that are victims of human trafficking. The three areas of service that are provided are based on education, prevention and restoration. In order to provide the resources at PATH many volunteers are needed and also financial donors. The global human trafficking industry brings in over one hundred and fifty billion dollars annually. More than 25 million people -- many the most vulnerable among us, including children -- are victims coerced, tricked or forced into indentured servitude. Sex trafficking is an ever-growing business. During the time of COVID, business is booming, but it has become more difficult to uncover trafficking rings. Our isolation has kept us from seeing who might be a victim, or where they are located.Despite films like Pretty Woman that would persuade us the sex trade can result in a fairy tale ending, it is a life filled with hopelessness and despair, a life our guest Stacy Reed has experienced. Stacy is a survivor, author, poet, and motivational speaker. She has traveled internationally to educate and advocate for victims, and for 20 years has worked with people who experience alcoholism, substance use disorders, prostitution, sex exploitation, domestic violence, mental health, and HIV/AIDS. She has a masters in social work and is currently a PsyD student enrolled at William James College in Newton, MA. She's also Supervisor of Peer Mentorship at RIA House, a non profit on a mission to help end human trafficking and sex exploitation. She believes "No one should be bought or sold for the sexual gratification of another person."We welcome Stacy, and thank her for generously sharing her story during January, National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Antoinette lobbies to change the human trafficking laws and provides outlets for survivors who have experienced these heinous crimes.   Antoinette talks to several guests, including policymakers and survivors of human trafficking. In these discussions, the fraud and coercion of these predators are brought to life. Predators prey on the victim's vulnerability, hence why pedophilia is so prominent within human trafficking. Human trafficking is a crime, but there are still policies in place that protect the predator and keep the victim in slavery. It is people like Antoinette who advocate for survivors and create change to stop human trafficking.    Within human trafficking, there are two different kinds: labor trafficking and sex trafficking. Antoinette delves into the dark worlds of both forms of slavery, into the twisted lies, fraud and coercion that often lead children and women into pedophilia and slavery. Human trafficking is hidden in plain sight and many of the survivors are left unreported. Antoinette urges us to say something if we see something. If you notice any force, report it. If you notice any fraud, report it.   Human trafficking is modern-day slavery. Inhumane discusses the fraud and coercion predators use to capture vulnerable victims. Antoinette calls on her listeners to act and help stop the predators who perpetuate this slavery. Predators are everyday people and human trafficking happens right under our noses, in our own backyards. Human trafficking and slavery continue to be insidious societal cancers affecting millions of people around the world. January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month. At FREA, we're highlighting this issue in January so you can be aware of the risks and take action to protect you and your loved ones. Is there anything we can do to keep you and loved ones safe?  The answer is absolutely “Yes”.  First, some context. What is Human Trafficking? The Polaris Project, a nonprofit charity working since 2002 to end trafficking, tells us: *"Human trafficking is the business of stealing freedom for profit. In some cases, traffickers trick, defraud or physically force victims into providing commercial sex. In others, victims are lied to, assaulted, threatened or manipulated into working under inhumane, illegal or otherwise unacceptable conditions. It is a multi-billion dollar criminal industry that denies freedom to 24.9 million people around the world." History In 2007, the United States Senate designated January 11th as, “National Human Trafficking Awareness Day”. On December  31, 2015, President Obama proclaimed the entire month of January as, "National Slavery and Human Trafficking Month". This problem isn’t limited to Western countries. Human trafficking and slavery is a huge global scourge. Experts estimate there are 20 to 30 million people in slavery around the world.  The Sad Statistics  The U.S. State Department estimates there are 600,000 to 800,000 people trafficked across international borders each year. Eighty percent of those people are female and half are children. The FBI says as many as 18,000 people are trafficked every year in the U.S. alone. Based on reports from non-profits and agencies who work in the field of human trafficking, the number of victims is likely much higher. Sadly, children are 12 to 14 years old on average when they enter the sex trade. Many are runaways who experienced abuse before leaving home. Human trafficking is the third largest international crime generating $32 billion every year, with $15.5 billion of that number made in industrialized countries. Only drugs and weapons trafficking earn more money. Human Misery From Human Trafficking  Let’s look beyond the numbers. Every person, every child lured or forced into sex or labor slavery is a living, breathing human being. They will experience unspeakable acts of brutality.  The health and psychological toll victims experience can last a lifetime. Even when victims are freed from physical bondage, emotional pain may never be extinguished. Fortunately, many human traffic survivors can be helped to achieve emotional wellbeing using methods shared in the “Resources” section of our https://FREA.support website. How to Protect You and Your Loved Ones Here are ways to reduce risk for you, children, and teens: * First, talk about the reality of human trafficking with your children and teens.
 * Pay attention to your children’s social media communications. Know who they are talking with, texting, or connecting with on social media.
 * If you are an adult or older teen who interacts with people you don't know personally on social media, this same warning applies to you. The "person of your dreams" you meet on social media could turn out to be a criminal planning to gain your trust and then force you into human trafficking.
 * Traffickers are heavy users of social media. They target vulnerable children and teens, gaining their trust online and then arranging in-person meetings. During such meetings, children are either lured into sexual acts or are outright kidnapped.
It’s not only children and teens who are targets. Vulnerable adults, usually women, are also at risk. Get Help Now! If you’re a victim or are in touch with a victim, call the National Trafficking Hot-line at 888-373-7888.
