Vivienne Westwood is a fashion designer who was known for drawing from historical influences and sending messages with her designs. She got her start within the punk scene, brought parody of British royalty into her runways designs, and later became focused on climate issues. And so more so than with other designers we are drawn to asking questions about her ideologies - how did they develop, and to some degree, how genuinely are they reflected in her work?   If you think you have deja vu, you don't. We did do a Vivienne Westwood series last year but we are back with a bigger, better (more researched) series that explores her design ideologies and design craft. But “Ugly is the New Beautiful” as they say, “they” being the people who are grasping at straws trying to market to gen z.   Fact check: Working Girl did get an Oscar, but it was for Best Music and Best Original Song (Carly Simon). It did win some Golden Globes.   The book we discuss is called Dressing Barbie: A Celebration of the Clothes That Made America's Favorite Doll and the Incredible Woman Behind Them   Follow us on the socials! Here for some more content where Jackie and Hope eat while podcasting (don't worry you can't hear it this time). Talking about capitalism and fashion works up an appetite! Hope wonders if she can stay interested in biking with all the fashion dilemmas it presents. Jackie further discusses her e-textiles thesis and presentation. Furthermore, we discuss the wealthiest man alive who is wealthy because of fashion so again billionaires are up on the chopping block. We also go over: gay pride and corporations, Olivia Rodrigo's Depop, and wondering what it means to have personal style. Also we really use antithesis a lot in this episode, mostly because Jackie is trying to use it more regularly. The gang goes in depth about modern minimalism and let us tell you, modern minimalism roots are racist af. Which is like duh, but still.    We're socialists! Follow us on the socials @fashismpod

This is a bonus episode, meaning we're releasing it out of order so that we can deliver this piping hot content before its relevance crumbles under the weight of the media cycle. It's a Met Gala recap, so we're talking about favorites and least favorites, and giving our takes on the event's most controversial looks. Along the way, Hope and Jackie both come out as pro flower crown and ask the question “where were you when you found out what a deductible is?” Finally, a conversation about Simon Denny's art exhibit Security Through Obscurity, which tells a story of neoliberal irony through the beautiful and unexpected collision of Margaret Thatcher's scarves with Patagonia puffy vests. Jackie recounts some juicy bits from her thesis work on E-Textiles: the history of embroidery as a feminine craft and as a tool for activism for some certified bad bitches. This spurs convos around art vs. craft, which accidentally aligns perfectly with subsequent convos on sewing your own wedding dress and the confusing branding around home economics. Warning that we get off topic by the end but if you stick with it you'll learn about Jackie's super secret real estate plans.   NAME DROPS (Artists/Scholars/Texts mentioned in this episode): -"The Subversive Stitch" by Rosiska Parker -"Old Mistresses: Women, Art, and Ideology" by Roszika Parker and Griselda Pollock -Hannah Hoch -Janie Terrero -Sophie Taeuber-Arp   We're socialists! The gals report on how sewing class is going while eating a midday cinnamon roll (just imagine you're having brekky with us and staying completely quiet.) Somehow the day's topics had a theme and that theme was “Men's Fashion” First, inspired by the "boy fashion podcast" Throwin' Fits, we hop back on the ootd train and once again try to define our aesthetics. Next we talk about Stock-X (Jackie has a hard time with saying Wahlberg, but she has a hard time with words and also fuck Mark Wahlberg.) Finally, we talk about fedoras and ponder how they became known as the douchiest item of clothing on earth.

Jam packed with buzzwords, this episode has the gals talking wine mom aesthetic and other heterocore, trying to decide if they're avant basic, and briefly arguing over whose boyfriend is fashionable. Things get wistful when they discuss the NYT piece about post pandemic fashion aka utopian fashion aka yolo fashion.

The gals discuss BDSM accessories hitting the mainstream and something called a wobble skirt that you didn't know you needed to know about. They dissect the working class roots of the word Luddite in the textile industry and can only hope that their coworkers continue to feed them top notch stories. This, plus rambling about Taylor Swift playing it safe on the red carpet, dudes wearing silk scarves, and of course, hating on the rich.
