Dolores Vargas 'La terremoto' reinó primero en el baile como heredera natural de su maestra Carmen Amaya  que la señaló "como la bestia que más se parecía a ella". La bautizó como 'La pimienta', pero antes fue el hermano de Dolores, el mítico Príncipe Gitano, quien le dio la oportunidad en el  Teatro Lope de Vega de Madrid a los 11 años. Antes era la única niña de los Vargas que vivían en la Plaza Santa Ana de Madrid y que se enfrentaban a los Caracol por sus triunfos internacionales , según nos cuenta el periodista José Manuel Gamboa. Tras el éxito precoz en el teatro se casa con el guitarrista y primo hermano Pepe Castellón. El matrimonio no gusta en casa y se marcha primero a Canne y París y luego a Nueva York donde participa en el mítico Show televisivo de Ed Sullivan. Allí graba dos discos de baile con su primo Sabicas, el guitarrista español que triunfaba en Estados Unidos, hace una gira de costa a costa por todas las granes ciudades americanas y a mitad de los sesenta vuelve a España convertida ya en una gran estrella. Pero el estrellato de verdad le llegaría cantando y con el exitazo "Achilipú" que se grabo en 1970. A partir de ahí se convierte en la reina del flamenco pop y de la rumba. Aparece en todos los grandes programas televisivos. Sus números uno y discos de oro se suceden como los grandes temas como "la piragua!, " "el despertador" , "chipry chipry cheep cheep" o "A tu vera" que no es de Lola Flores, sino de ella. El maestro Quiroga la compuso para ella y fue la primera en grabarla. Las comparaciones con Lola Flores por su forma de moverse en el escenario y su físico nunca le gustaron, "ella es ella y yo soy yo, somos la noche y el día". Sus bailes sobre el escenario eran tan bestias y salvajes  que empezó a tener problemas de espalda que le fueron retirando hasta que, en 1987, con la muerte de su marido decide retirarse radicalmente y dedicarse hasta su muerte al culto evangelista. De ahí su rápido olvido, a pesar de ser una artista única, genial e irrepetible para todos los críticos y flemencólogos. Participan en este podcast la hija de Dolores Castellón, hija de la terremoto, el periodista José Manuel Gamboa, el músico Sicus Carbonell, los flamencólogos Carlos Martín y Paco Hidalgo, el productos y sobrino de Dolores Jack Chakataga, Teresa Truchado, Silvia Hermoso y Pepe Rubio.

En République démocratique du Congo, il faut remonter le temps jusqu'au 24 novembre 1965, date à laquelle Mobutu a pris le pouvoir. Mobutu, c'était la toque léopard, l'abacost – célèbre costume congolais – mais aussi la canne. Pour le maréchal, c'était à la fois un signe d'autorité et un objet pour valoriser la culture traditionnelle du pays.  Dans les rues de Kinshasa, Mobutu reste l'homme à la toque de léopard et à la canne. Sculptée en bois ou en ivoire, la canne incarnait son autorité. André-Alain Atundu Liongo, dernier chef des renseignements sous Mobutu, se souvient : « Je crois qu'en revenant de cette tournée, où je lui étais présenté pour la première fois, dans l'avion, il était détendu. Il a enlevé son costume. Mais dès qu'on a atterri, il a mis son costume, sa toque et sa canne. C'était un autre homme. Il ne blaguait plus. Il revêtait et incarnait l'autorité. La canne c'est l'autorité et la sagesse ». Pour ce proche collaborateur de Mobutu, la canne était plus qu'un objet d'apparat. « Lorsqu'il était debout, qu'il nous attendait avec impatience, il toquait sa canne. Lorsque la canne était sur la table, il était mécontent. Elle est taillée d'un seul bloc de bois. « Les traditions dans la chefferie... Il y a un arbre précis que l'on détermine. Ça n'est pas n'importe quel arbre. Il détient une force naturellement, explique Jean-Paul Kwungusugu, chef coutumier dans la province du Haut-Lomami. Les gens, quand ils voient le président de la République, on lui remet tout ça par les chefs coutumiers. Attention, le président de la République n'est pas simplement présent par la constitution, les ancêtres sont avec lui. D'ailleurs, c'est ce qui a favorisé les dictatures ». La canne a fait de Mobutu le roi du Zaïre pendant plus de 30 ans, mais elle a aussi servi à faire valoir une culture congolaise au lendemain des indépendances. « Au retour, il se comportait non seulement comme un chef d'État moderne, mais comme un chef traditionnel, indique Placide Mumbembele, professeur de politique mémorielle. Cela s'est davantage consolidé avec sa politique de recours à l'authenticité, afin de pouvoir, comme il le disait lui-même : être soi-même, c'est-à-dire être Zaïre Roi, avec toutes ses traditions ». Mobutu possédait une trentaine de cannes, selon ses proches. À Camp Diable : « La canne, un acteur clé de l'énergie renouvelable », souligne le Dr Arvin Boolell by TOPFM MAURITIUS

À la suite des récentes pluies, les autorités ont décidé d'assouplir les mesures en vigueur. Le ministère de l'Énergie et des Utilités publiques, la Central Water Authority (CWA) et la Water Resources Commission ont annoncé ce vendredi 30 mai 2025 la levée temporaire des restrictions sur l'irrigation des champs de canne à sucre. Cette mesure entre en vigueur dès ce samedi 31 mai 2025. Interrogée à ce sujet, Jacqueline Sauzier, secrétaire générale de la Chambre d'Agriculture, salue cette décision qui, selon elle, tombe à point nommé : « Cette levée permettra aux planteurs d'irriguer leurs champs au moment opportun, sans dépendre exclusivement des pluies. Après la coupe de la canne, il y a une phase critique de repousse qui nécessite un apport hydrique important », explique-t-elle. Elle précise également que cette mesure contribuera à améliorer la productivité de la canne à sucre pour la prochaine saison.

Until she found herself in an uncomfortable place where she felt she was no longer important enough and didn't belong…    Glenda Benevides was born in Oakland Ca and has been singing professionally since the age of 16, having toured from Japan to the EU, the UK and through Canada. Her career has included singing and performing for the South African Film Festival in Canne, France, The Brava theater for a women's fundraiser gala in San Francisco, the Popkomm Music conference in Berlin, a Beverly Wilshire, Los Angeles solo performance for best-selling author Harv Ecker and many more. Glenda is also a producer for herself and others and has been the creative director and producer for many private events where she donates a percentage from her music sales to One Tree Planted. She started her own record company Good Witch Records in 2004, along with Mirror Speaks the Truth productions for music in film and tv. She wrote and developed a tv script called Never Give Up and started Global Badass Goddess online Magazine and podcast in 2018, which features woman from around the world sharing stories of inspiration and empowerment. She now has the Glenda Benevides Music podcast to share stories from extraordinary artists in their trials and triumphs. Glenda is the author of Courage, Find Your Fire and Ignite Action in Your Life along with Own The Goddess Within e-book and workshop and has worked and sung with Toto, Jeffrey Osborne, Pink Martini and Broadway artist of "Aida" fame, Damian Perkins, and Steve Smith of Dirty Vegas, just to name a few.    I am your host, Marci Nettles.
