For the Record is a conversation series where we speak with all manner of music heads — DJs, music journos, indie label captains, record shop owners, listening bar kingpins, et al — about their stories + the music that makes them.Join the Crate Coalition: https://discord.gg/sAaG6a7bv4Few DJs could adequately represent the last three decades of New York nightclub history - no less do so with such iconic credentials as Justin Strauss. Since he was 17, when his first band was signed to Island Records, Justin has had a career that reads like a Who's-Who of the music scene, spinning at nearly every dance club that you'd ever want to go to.Starting as DJ at New York's legendary Mudd Club, he spun his way through The Ritz, Limelight, Area, Tunnel, M.K., Life, Centro Fly and more, pioneering his own distinctive sound, and becoming one of the most sought-after remixers and producers not just in New York, but in the world. He has worked with the gamut of artists - Depeche Mode, Hot Chip, Sergio Mendez, Tina Turner, Jimmy Cliff, B-52s, Luther Vandross, 808 State, Malcolm McClaren, Skinny Puppy, Goldfrapp, LCD Soundsystem to name a few and on over 300 records!MUSIC MENTIONSEarly years, from being in a band to becoming a DJ:- The Beatles- The Rolling Stones- The Kinks- The Who- James Brown- Chuck Berry- David Bowie- Milk 'N' Cookies- Island Records- Roxy Music- Sparks- Robert Palmer- Top of the Pops- New York Dolls- CBGB- Sex Pistols- The Mudd Club (NYC)- Studio 54- Max's Kansas City (NYC)- Paradise Garage (NYC)- François Kevorkian- The Limelight (NYC)- Aria (NYC)- Tunnel (NYC)- Danceteria (NYC)- Hurrah (NYC)- Palladium (NYC)- The Ritz (NYC)- Webster Hall (NYC)- Prince- Kraftwerk- Human League- Depeche Mode- Gang of Four- Tina Turner- Afrika Bambaataa- Liquid Liquid- ESG- SpotifyQ&A- Vinylmania (NYC)- Optimo- James Murphy- The Dare- Deewee- Soulwax- Fat White Family- Paranoid London- “Brat” by Charli XCX- “B2B” by Charli XCX- Hot Chip- Joe Goddard- Marcus Marr- Max Park- Prince LanguageDiscovering music today (30:42):- Clubs, DJ's & Friends- Bandcamp- BeatportFavorite clubs in NYC right now (38:52):- Gabriela (NYC)- Good Room (NYC)- Night Moves (NYC)- Public Records (NYC)- Nowadays (NYC)- Outer Heaven (NYC)- Jean's (NYC)- Baby's All Right (NYC)First album ever purchased (45:01):- “Meet The Beatles” by The BeatlesMost recent album purchased (45:45):- “Decius Vol. II (Splendour & Obedience)” by DeciusArtists discovered in the past year (46:48):- Decius- Otha- Charli XCX- Sleaford ModsDesert island discs (49:44):- “Computer World” by Kraftwerk- “Revolve” by The Beatles- “In the Jungle Groove” by James BrownCurrent and upcoming collab projects:- Each Other- Extra Credit
In this episode of Danny Hurst´s podcast he once again speaks to someone who grew up in London. Today, it is the turn of Adam and the Ants guitarist, songwriter and record producer Marco Pirroni, who has appeared alongside some of the most well-known names in music, including not only Adam Ant, but also Sinéad O'Connor, Siouxsie Sioux, Sid Vicious, Shakespeare's Sister and many others. He shares some memories of growing up just off the Caledonian Road, Camden when it wasn't fashionable, Soho and the West End; a life that compared starkly with living in America. Naturally, he also shares some great insights and stories about London´s music scene, especially in the 70's, 80s and 90s, punk and New Wave, Vivienne and Malcolm's shop on the Kings Road, the story behind Prince Charming and whether the Ants are ever likely to tour again. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS Until the late 80s, virtually every shop in London closed early. Each area of London had its own very distinctive character, usually heavily influenced by which immigrant groups lived there. Malcolm McClaren´s punk clothes shop originally sold Teddy Boy clothing designed by his then girlfriend, Vivienne Westwood. Malcolm liked to be mischievous, sometimes he involved Marco. Marco shares a couple of those stories. The Roxy launched some great bands including Generation X and The Clash. BEST MOMENTS “In the early 80s, it (London) was still pretty dead… nothing was ever open.” “All their fans were trying to gravitate to something else. Suddenly, this 50s clothes things was happening on the King's Road.” “My mum and dad ran a restaurant. Everyone in it was Italian. Anyone who ever came around was Italian.” “I was born in London. I am very happy to die in London, when the time comes.” “Punk sort of influenced everything so much so that everyone forgets that it was that that did it.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marco_Pirroni https://www.linkedin.com/in/marco-pirroni-433373b4 Convent - https://dvrbs.camdenhistory.com/camden-religion/camdennj-church-perpetualrosaryconvent.htm Pet shop - https://nickygrace.co.uk/2013/01/10/the-old-pet-shop-in-camden-town Malcolm McClaren´s punk clothes shop - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_(boutique) HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Today's absorbing episode of Electronically Yours features a famous production team primarily responsible (together with Anne Dudley) for creating the band Art Of Noise, Gary Langan and JJ Jeczalik. Gary started as assistant engineer on the most famous Queen albums, he then went on to work with Trevor Horn at Sarm on various projects, he produced Beauty Stab for ABC and Through The Barricades for Spandau Ballet. He co-founded ZTT in 1983, and produced Happy? For PIL. Gary went on to work with Malcolm McClaren, Scritti Pollitti and constellations of major stars and some of the most epic albums of the last 30 years. JJ Jeczalik is a British electronic musician/record producer, Fairlight expert and co-founder of Art Of Noise. He was also behind the success of controversial Liverpool band, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and their number one hit singles "Relax" and "Two Tribes" also on ZTT.[9] Other work for ZTT involved further work for FGTH on the Welcome to the Pleasuredome album and for another two signings, Propaganda and Andrew Poppy. Vivienne Westwood is a fashion designer who was known for drawing from historical influences and sending messages with her designs. She got her start within the punk scene, brought parody of British royalty into her runways designs, and later became focused on climate issues. And so more so than with other designers we are drawn to asking questions about her ideologies - how did they develop, and to some degree, how genuinely are they reflected in her work? If you think you have deja vu, you don't. We did do a Vivienne Westwood series last year but we are back with a bigger, better (more researched) series that explores her design ideologies and design craft. This episode focuses on her working class roots, her influence on the punk scene, and how her views were impacted by Malcolm McClaren and The Situationists. The Sex Pistols were one of the pioneers of the music, fashion, and attitude of the punk rock movement. They were only together for about 2 ½ a half years and released just one album. But over that period, they were just as famous (or infamous) for their behavior as they were as for their music. They didn't care what you, the music industry, or society thought about them.Led by front man Johnny Rotten and an illiterate guitar player named Steve Jones who stole one of his first axes from David Bowie, they took a scorched Earth, double middle finger, bugger off attitude toward everything. Over their short career, they were kicked off of two record labels, banned from British television, caused dozens of fights, and became the embodiment of punk rock anarchy. Then there's the tragedy of Sid Viscious, who became an icon of the nihilistic live fast / die young attitude up when he died of a heroin overdose while out on bail for allegedly murdering his girlfriend. In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we're taking a close look at the Sex Pistols. Including their chaotic manager Malcolm McClaren, the fights, the censorship, a Christmas party they threw for working class kids, and that one frigging amazing album that changed music forever. Our show is sponsored by our home base of McCusker's Tavern at 17th and Shunk Streets in Philadelphia. In the fifth episode of Gallo Vault Sessions, we follow the ways South African music has proliferated across the international stage, and trace a few Gallo-affiliated artists as they and their music traversed the globe! We charter a flight with the music of Lucky Dube, Ray Phiri, Solomon Linda, and more…and explore both the highs and lows of what it means for South African music and artists to contend with international audiences and global success. We also tease out different moments of both cultural exploitation and cultural appreciation in this landscape as we begin to wrap up the first season of the Gallo Vault Sessions podcast. We consider Paul Simon's Graceland, sync deals with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and even learn about champeta sound system culture on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. We return to our conversations with Bra Lulu Masilela from The Boyoyo Boys & Mam Hilda Tloubatla, from The Mahotella Queens — both of whom we met in our previous episode, as well as former Gallo Managing Directors Antos Stella and Ivor Haarburger, and also meet two new voices, Edna Martinez, a DJ from Colombia, and the incredibly prolific composer, producer and performer, Don Laka! In episode 11, we cover one of the most recognizable names in fashion and the Queen of punk herself, Vivienne Westwood. We are back after a short hiatus following ThriftCon Denver and this episode is the perfect way to jump back in. We cover from Westwood's early days of making her own clothing and attempts at selling her own handmade jewelry into her introduction and relationship with Malcolm McClaren. That duo would reign over the 70s and 80s and created an entire movement and helped to spark the punk scene in music and fashion. Eventually breaking things off, Westwood would go onto become a household name in the fashion world in her own right as well as a committed activist taking a firm stance on causes such as climate change, civil rights and freedom of speech. Also Fireflies by Owl City might be the new song for our credits and if this episode gets removed from the airwaves now you know why.
New music from the very talented Crafty 893, taken from his new EP on Tru Thoughts. Deep dancefloor music from Mall Grab. In tribute to Ronald Bell (R.I.P), who co-founded Kool & The Gang, there are two songs from the group plus two Hip Hop tunes that sampled the songs from A Tribe Called Quest and Malcolm McClaren and the World Famous Supreme Team. A classic from The Quantic Soul Orchestra featuring Alice Russell. Quality music from Brighton’s Ebi Soda. Star Wars themed Cut & Paste from Si Spex. A track from Sault. Plus plenty more musical treats.

Maybe the Sons of Ben movie has had an adverse effect on the U, because it looks like we are swiftly turning into a mockumentary like This is Spinal Tap.. How else to explain the bizarre series of injuries and circumstances that have afflicted all the goalkeepers? After all, the goalie is to a soccer team like a drummer is to a rock band…unfortunately Nick Sak seems to be playing the Malcolm McClaren to the Union’s Sex Pistols as it’s Anarchy in the PA...
This still sounds good, I thought I'd re-cast it as there's some great vocal effects which you might have missed altogether when it was 'cast in lo-fi, shame, the Sofa cd with the final mixes and the John Lennon samples is with the other band member really, who is probably in borstal by now so I wont see that again. Heigh ho. BTW, who heard that Malcolm McClaren died? Bit sad innit, I'm sure alot of his work will live on 'tho, especially seeing as he's still influencing alot of people that don't even realise they're being influenced by him.
