Head In Flames Your Maze At The End Of The Road High Waisted Jeans Nothing Like This Ugly Old Fashioned Virtue Silence Kills Keep On Stumbling Angry Silence We Were Soldiers Merci Charles.

Jonny Swift (ex Beat the Radar, Paloma Café) is a Cumbria, UK-based artist who writes, performs and releases music under his own name, and since 2020 has released three albums (Dalton Daze, Story of Luna & Kalimera) via local independent label Seahouse Records. Swift has received national and international radio play and exposure from BBC 6 music, BBC London, BBC introducing, Amazing Radio as well as local independent radio stations.Jonny has released the lead single "She Said" on 17 November 2023 off his forthcoming record "An Awesome Dream" (1 December). Recorded, Mixed and Mastered by Matt Kassell at Digital Man Recording Studio, Barrow, Cumbria, these releases are available on all digital platforms.Sounding like something from 80s indie label Sarah Records, there's no denying that ‘She Said' is a straight forward indie pop song. Jangly guitars, female backing vocals, tambourines and lyrics about rejection place this track firmly in a particular category. With strong influences by The Vaselines, The Wake as well as more modern indie acts such as The Cribs, this perfect slice of pop is perfect for both daytime radio as well as indie-specific shows and playlists. For our conversation today, we discussed the artistic impact of "Gemini" - the debut album by an American indie rock, dream pop act known as Wild Nothing, Released on May 25, 2010, on Brooklyn, NY's Captured Tracks, Wild Nothing is a brainchild of Blacksburg, VA's Jack Tatum and a mainstay of the group since its inception back in 2009.Enjoy the conversation!

Jane Duffus in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.tangentbooks.co.uk/shop/these-things-happen-the-sarah-records-story-by-jane-duffus-signed-copies https://www.janeduffus.com This is the definitive history of Sarah Records; the Bristol-based label that signed the acts no major label would touch but who you wanted to hear. Sarah put out a board game, produced cut 'n' paste fanzines and stuck two fingers up to the mainstream music industry. Sarah was your secret world and it was located in the heart of Bristol. Sarah Records lasted for seven years, nine months and 11 days.  In These Things Happen, those who were there at the beating heart of the indie-pop world reveal the deepest, darkest secrets of what really went into making Sarah's pop masterpieces. Featuring almost 130 interviews, including at least one member of every single band (as well as the world exclusive first interview with Christine of Christine's Cat fame), this book is an oral history of a defining moment in pop history.

In the mid-1980s, before she became known for fronting the band Lush, Miki Berenyi put out five issues of Alphabet Soup fanzine (“It may be crap but it's only 5p”) alongside her then-bestie and future band-mate, Emma Anderson. Meantime, before she started Sarah Records, Clare Wadd put out multiple issues of Kvatch fanzine. This podcast, hosted by former Jamming! editor Tony Fletcher, marks the first time ANY of the three have ever had a conversation with each other. Over the course of an hour-plus chat the three of them discuss:Why Miki had a photo of Tony on hand should he randomly e-mail her introducing himself.Clare's upbringing in Harrogate, Yorkshire, and starting a fanzine as a way in to the “independent” music world.Miki's school years in Central London, following Culture Club and Haircut 100, and starting a fanzine as a way to combat shyness. The lack of girls producing fanzines in the early-mid-1980s.Miki's “nuts” upbringing, how it created a “seize the day” element in her, and how that resulted in her and Emma doing Alphabet Soup.Being sexually harassed as a teenage girl selling fanzines.Alphabet Soup being “silly & smutty” vs Kvatch being “worthy.”The lack of competitiveness among fanzines. The network the editors created instead.Interviewing 1980s indie icons like Half Man Half Biscuit, The Housemartins, Xmal Deutschland, and asking The Wedding Present about apartheid because it feels like the right thing to do.Neglecting to press record on an interview and making it up instead.Sarah Records' dedicated fanzine “releases” and how Clare's contributions were more like the modern “perzine.”The sexism Clare encountered running SarahThe gender expectations/tokenism/sexism Miki encountered in a band and that Clare encountered running Sarah… and whether that has changed.Defending The Alarm.Other important ‘zines of the era: Attack On Bzag, Moving, Rouska, Jamming!, Viz Comics, Vague, Scared To Get Happy, Alphabet Soup's fake Diary of a Fanzine Writer (the Bride Assistants). This week, we're covering some of the finest female vocal performances and songs of the O3L era. But, as the ladies of Bananarama wisely imparted, "it ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it!" That's why we are thrilled to "do it" with indie pop giants Heavenly as our Third Lads this week: Amelia Fletcher, Rob Pursey, Pete Momtchiloff and Cathy Rogers! Heavenly are reuniting for a pair of sold out London shows this month to celebrate their ongoing reissue campaign on Skep Wax, and they were gracious enough to hang out with us to share music, memories and laughs with us. Heavenly was formed in Oxford, England in 1989, springing from one of the seminal UK indie bands of the '80s, Talulah Gosh. From 1990-1996, the group released four albums and a run of brilliant singles (mostly on Sarah Records), full of jangly twee pop sweetness with an occasional riot grrrl attitude. Following the untimely passing of drummer Matthew Fletcher, the surviving members regrouped as Marine Research for the terrific 1999 LP Sounds From The Gulf Stream. In the 21st century, Amelia and Rob have been involved in various musical projects including Sportique, Tender Trap, Caternary Wires and Swansea Sound, as well as running the Skep Wax label. Amelia is also an esteemed economist who has been appointed as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). Pete has played in bands including Scarlet's Well (with Bid from Monochrome Set), Would-Be-Goods, and Tufthunter. Cathy has a PhD in Educational Neuroscience, and is well known as the creator, producer and host of the reality competition shows Scrapheap Challenge (UK) and Junkyard Wars (US). Plus: - In an exciting quiz game, find out if C really is Heavenly's option! - Being Tik Tok famous! - Riot grrrls and roller skates! - Dealing with "scary" managers! - Doing octopus impressions! - The art of peeling root vegetables! - Britcoms (well, and Aussie-coms)! - Gregg gets sensitive (but only for a moment)! - Cathy lays out some fresh rhymes! - Aging indie band looking for teens! - Hear the new single "Get Me" by Skep Wax artist Panic Pocket! Sonen: “Pristine Christine”, de The Sea Urchins (Sarah Records, 1987) “Cling Film”, de The Sea Urchins (“Stardust”, Sarah Records, 1992) “Cling Film”, de Redpoppy (maqueta “Swallow”, 1994) “Hold You”, de Redpoppy (maqueta “Songs From Lilliput”, 1996) “Inside My Sorrow”, de Redpoppy (“Songs From Lilliput”, 1996) “Keep Smiling”, de Redpoppy (“Songs From Lilliput”, 1996) “It Never Comes”, de The Aprons (maqueta “Autumn Time”, 1997) “High and Low”, de The Aprons (“Autumn Time”, 1997) "Full of Love”, de The Aprons (“Autumn Time”, 1997) “Hold Me”, de The Aprons (maqueta “Polaroid”, 1999) “Twenty Five”, de The Aprons (“Polaroid”, 1999) “Glowing Field”, de The Aprons (“Polaroid”, 1999) “My Dreams”, de The Aprons (“Polaroid”, 1999) “Bad Liar”, de Marlovers (“I Don't Feel Like Myself”, Rock Indiana, 2021)

Whether you spent the decade at the clubs covered in foam or not, electronic music was everywhere in the '90s.  Much like those foam parties, Uncle Gregg and Brett (aka DJ B-Var, aka Graham Cracker?!?) get wild, bubbly, frothy, and are naked from the waist down.  OK, so one of those things is not true, but we'll let you decide which one...   This week, The Orchids are back in the O3L Spotlight, and we are privileged to play the second single off of their upcoming album Dreaming Kind, called "Didn't We Love You."  Dare we say it's even better than the last one, which is saying something, because that was great as well!  The Orchids were one of the great Sarah Records bands, releasing three albums of swooning, sophisticated pop music for the label: Lyceum (1989), Unholy Soul (1991), and Striving For The Lazy Perfection (1994).  Dreaming Kind is the Glasgow band's first album since 2014, and is out on 2 September on Skep Wax Records.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of musicians who both suffer from the effects of LSD—that's lead singer disease—Stuart Murdoch and Ramesh Srivastava. Ramesh was and is now again the lead singer and chief creative force behind the Austin, Texas band Voxtrot, which burned bright but maybe too quick in the early 2000s. They released a series of rapturously received EPs and one LP that were beloved by fans of deeply British institutions like Sarah Records and The Smiths. But the band had split by 2010, and Ramesh went on to release a pair of solo albums that didn't quite have the impact his band did. For a while, he was content to leave Voxtrot in the past, but gathering material for two reissues gave him the spark to get thing going again. The next few months will see the release of both Early Music—which gathers the band's beloved EPs—and Cut from the Stone, which features rarities and B-sides. And then, like some unstoppable force of nature, Voxtrot will tour the U.S. again. Dates can be found at voxtrot.net. And in case you're not familiar, here's a great Voxtrot song called “The Start of Something.” Do you hear a bit of Belle and Sebastian in that song? They're a pretty clear influence on Voxtrot, and Srivastava met Stuart Murdoch while living in Glasgow in his younger days—you'll hear about their meet-cute in this conversation. Belle and Sebastian, of course, have had an incredible career over the past quarter century or so. They started life as a school project for Murdoch, a shy young man whose feelings spilled out into his gentle songs in a way that seemed then—and now—to be almost magical. Over the years, Belle and Sebastian developed from a sort of bedroom-pop project to a massive pop machine, while never losing that spirit of playfulness and sincerity that Murdoch has always projected. The band recently released their ninth studio album, called A Bit of Previous. The title is a bit tricky in that it seems to reference the good old days but also Murdoch's longtime interest in Buddhism, which he explored in greater depth during the pandemic. In this conversation, you'll actually hear a bit about how both Ramesh and Stuart approach spirituality, both Christianity and Buddhism. You'll hear how being a “gay brown person” pushed Ramesh away from religion for a long time. They talk about the aforementioned “lead singer disease,” and how that affects everyday life. And we get to hear about a young Stuart Murdoch making his way to the London flat of one of his musical heroes, but then deciding not to actually knock on his door. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Ramesh Srivastava and Stuart Murdoch for chatting. If you like what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite social channels and check out talkhouse.com for lots of great written pieces, too. We're All Trying To Get There is a compilation of many of those Sarah singles. The Sugargliders were a different act for Sarah who's artists drew their inspirations from 60s acts and artists with classic British and European sensibilities. The Sugargliders' sound represented a unique divergence from their label mates writing and recording songs including references to nature and possessing a hopeful ethos. Josh was very complimentary of the impact of Captain Cocoa's nurturing influence on the early interaction of the band.Thank you to Josh for speaking so candidly about the band, their influences and the influence of the natural world on their music.

For episode 12, Brian had the opportunity to speak to Christopher Porter, the primary creative force behind indie pop act Veronica Lake and co-founder of Audrey's Diary. Founded in metro Detroit in the early 90s, Audrey's Diary had a very brief run of 6 releases, each holding a place in the pantheon of American independent, space and dream pop. For those of you wondering about the importance of Audrey's Diary on today's music, 2 tracks released by the Audrey's Diary were featured on the epic Southeast of Saturn compilation released on Third Man Records in 2020. As an art project, Audrey's Diary has had an influence on independent music in a far more reaching way than Christopher is willing to admit.Featuring the likes Black Tambourine (Pam Berry, Archie Moore and Brian Nelson of Velocity Girl and Mike Schulman of Slumberland Records), this supergroup of sorts kicked off the label with the classic “Throw Aggi From The Bridge”. Brian and Christopher, now a journalist and writer, step through each of the Audrey's Diary releases exploring them in great detail. The final release was a fanzine, Emily's #777, an ode to the likes of Sarah Records featuring a 7” with music by Bark Psychosis, Jessamine and Buddah on the Moon.If you have never heard any of the Audrey's Diary releases or are just curious about this important independent American indie label, this interview is a treat. For fans of the label, this episode is somewhat of a love letter to those who loved the work of Christopher and Audrey's Diary. A key theme of this interview was best put by Christopher when he said “never stop making music with your friends”.

Sarah started in 1987 in Bristol, England where Clare Wadd and Matt Haynes got to know each other by exchanging their individual fanzines, Kvatch and Are You Scared To Get Happy. Lamented by the British music press of the day yet worshiped by passionate fans world wide, Sarah was ultimately ranked #2 in the NME's “Greatest Indie Labels of All Time”. Clare recounts stories from the early days of Sarah, their design and label aesthetic and culminating with their ending of the label in 1995 famously proclaiming “we don't do encores”. Clare also shares with Brian the origins of Sarah's feminist and political statements, going from subtle in the beginning to the forefront by the end. They soon signed to Sarah Records, releasing the home-recorded single "Clearer" in 1991, and took on more members, including singer/cellist Gemma Townley and second guitarist Harvey Williams (of The Field Mice/Another Sunny Day). In 1983, The Wake toured with New Order, and thus received critical attention but were often unfavourably compared to their more celebrated labelmates. Gillespie was asked to leave in 1983, subsequently playing drums with The Jesus and Mary Chain and achieving fame with his own band Primal Scream. After a short-lived stint with McInulty's ex-classmate Martin Cunning on bass, Alexander 'Mac' Macpherson permanently replaced Gillespie. That same year the band recorded a session on John Peel's BBC Radio 1 programme and David 'Kid' Jensen's BBC radio 1 show. The band toured extensively and scored an indie hit with their 1984 single "Talk About The Past" which featured Vini Reilly of Durutti Column on piano. The recording and release of their seminal 1985 album Here Comes Everybody marked the apex of their career. Further releases were few and far between: one more single "Of The Matter" emerged in 1985 before their last release for Factory, a 4-track EP entitled "Something That No One Else Could Bring" finally appeared in 1987. In 1988, disillusioned with the lack of proper promotion and indeed apathy from Factory Records, The Wake left the label and signed to Bristol's legendary Sarah Records, releasing two singles and two LPs, the last being 1994's Tidal Wave of Hype. By this point, once again down to a three piece featuring McInulty, Allen and Allen, they also shared personnel with another Glasgow-based band on Sarah, The Orchids, with whom they had also played a few live gigs. When Sarah shut down in 1995, The Wake effectively dissolved.

Aberdeen special with John Girgus   The band formed in 1992 and in 1994 released two singles on the seminal British label Sarah Records; they were one of the only American acts on Sarah. Aberdeen also released recordings through Sunday Records and guitarist and co-founder's own label The Tremolo Arm Users Club. They disbanded shortly after Sarah Records folded. They reformed in 2001, signed to Tremolo, and released a full-length album, Homesick and Happy to be Here, two singles, and a maxi-CD (see discography below).   In 2002, the band embarked on a US tour with Robert Wratten, playing solo acoustic performances as Trembling Blue Stars. In 2003, the band again played with Robert but as Trembling Blue Stars for a series of Los Angeles shows at Cafe Club Fais Do-Do.   Possibly the band's biggest exposure came when one of their songs, 'Sink or Float' was featured on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The song was also included on the UK edition of the series's second soundtrack album, Radio Sunnydale.

A classic pod from September 2006 in which we celebrate - with Andrew Collins - the golden age of Indie. There's fond talk of hairslides, baggy jerseys, "the pallor map of Britain", Sarah Records, Rough Trade, the rise of a new breed of sex symbol (Rachel from Slowdive, the beta male Edwyn Collins), and a world built around "ineptitude, lack of rehearsal, general uselessness and baleful songs about seeing your old girlfriend with another bloke". Very funny, highly recommended. Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Razorcuts with Tim Vass in conversation with David Eastaugh  Razorcuts were an indie pop band formed in 1984 in London. The group centred on Gregory Webster and Tim Vass (who were previously in The Cinematics), with various musicians including Peter Momtchiloff of Heavenly, Angus Stevenson (later of the Relationships), and New Zealand drummer David Swift. Early releases on the Subway Organisation label, including the debut Big Pink Cake led to a deal with Creation Records for whom they released two albums. Razorcuts split up on 21 April 1990, with Vass going on to form Red Chair Fadeaway, and Webster to The Carousel, Saturn V and then in the late 1990s Sportique. The duo were reunited under the name 'Forever People' in 1992 for a one-off single on Sarah Records.

The Field Mice special with Mark Dobson in conversation with David Eastaugh The Field Mice initially formed as a duo from South London suburb of Mitcham comprising Robert Wratten (for vocals and guitar) and Michael Hiscock (on bass guitar). The group's first EP, Emma's House, was released in November 1988, and reached number 20 in the UK Independent Chart. But it was with their second single "Sensitive" that they first received significant critical attention, giving them a top-20 indie hit and with a subsequent placing in John Peel's 1989 Festive 50. Debut mini-album Snowball reached number 3 on the indie albums chart. The original duo were joined by Harvey Williams(of Another Sunny Day) on guitar: the first fruits of this new line-up being the Skywriting mini-LP and in late 1990 the band expanded to include Annemari Davies on vocals, keyboards and guitar and Mark Dobson on drums. This five-piece line-up later recorded what was to be their final album (but their first full length for Sarah Records), For Keeps. Over a three-year career the band were often dogged with the reputation of having a post-C86 indie pop or generic Sarah Records sound despite producing tracks with numerous styles and influences. Early singles and even their sleeves harked back to early Factory Records bands such as New Order and The Wake, with many tracks often featuring sequencers and samples. Many of the group's recordings, notably "Triangle" and their epic seven-minute swan song, "Missing the Moon", displayed a strong influence from the popular dance music of the time. Most of the group's records were produced by Ian Catt, who later went on to develop the pop dance sound of "Missing The Moon" further with Saint Etienne (whose second single was a cover version of The Field Mice's "Let's Kiss and Make Up").

Sarah Records special with Michael White with David Eastaugh From 1987 to 1995, Bristol, England s Sarah Records was a modest underground success and, for the most part, a critical laughingstock in its native country sneeringly dismissed as the sad, final repository for a fringe style of music (variously referred to as indie-pop, C86, cutie and twee ) whose moment had passed. Yet now, more than 20 years after its founders symbolically destroyed it, Sarah is among the most passionately fetishized record labels of all time. Its rare releases command hundreds of dollars, devotees around the world hungrily seek out any information they can find about its poorly documented history, and young musicians some of them not yet born when Sarah shut down claim its bands (such as Blueboy, the Field Mice, Heavenly, and the Wake) as major influences.Featuring dozens of exclusive interviews with the music-makers, producers, writers and assorted eyewitnesses who played a part in Sarah s eight-year odyssey, Popkiss: The Life and Afterlife of Sarah Records is the first authorised biography of an unlikely cult legend.

The Hit Parade special with Julian Henry talking about life in music, the creative process, starting a record label & much much more The first Hit Parade's records were released in 1984. The Hit Parade's second and third singles "My Favourite Girl" and "The Sun Shines in Gerrards Cross" were played on BBC Radio 1 by DJs John Peel, David "Kid" Jensen and Janice Long but were dismissed by the music press as twee and inconsequential. The band originally consisted of three schoolfriends, Julian Henry, Raymond Watts and Matthew Moffatt. Watts moved to Berlin in 1989 to work with KMFDM, Henry developed a business in marketing and journalism, while Moffatt founded his own film lighting company. But they continue to release records, proclaiming the Latin motto "Semper Eadem" ("alvvays the same"). The Hit Parade record for JSH UK record label producing 7" vinyl singles in limited editions. The first Hit Parade single 'Forever' was released in 1984 with a mock-vorticist manifesto. A year later The Hit Parade signed to Stiff Records but the label went out of business before anything (other than a track on a compilation album) was released. The first pressing of the band's 'See You in Havana' single JSH5 with Stiff Records logo is collectible. The first Hit Parade LP "With Love From The Hit Parade" was released on their own label in 1988 to unfavourable reviews: 'mire of cheesy mundane tunes' 'oblivious to musical developments of the last 24 years' (Q Magazine) 'twee like you wouldn't believe' (MM), apart from NME which declared the Hit Parade to be the 'perfect pop machine'. But the band's diy approach was lauded by fanzines (Caff, Are You Scared To Get Happy, Especially Yellow) and the album sleeve was self-taken 'selfie album cover'. The album has been re-issued and is now regarded as 80s indie classic.[2][3]Following its release Henry was approached by Cherry Red Records and arranged[4] nine songs on the first Would-be-goods album. In the 1990s, The Hit Parade signed to Sarah Records label and recorded "In Gunnersbury Park" b/w "Harvey". After live shows in Tokyo shopping malls in the 90s the Hit Parade were linked to the Shibuya-kei movement alongside groups The Pastels, Orange Juice and Flipper's Guitar in Japan. The Hit Parade signed to Vinyl Japan and later Polystar Records, had a minor hit with "Hello Hannah Hello". They toured Japan several times, played at the opening of the Virgin Megastore Shinjuku, Tokyo, appearing on MTV Japan and other music TV shows, and signed to Minty Fresh Records, Chicago, in the United States releasing their first US single, "Hello Hannah Hello". The Hit Parade produced their fifth album with St Etienne producer Ian Catt in 2006 The Return of the Hit Parade, and 9th single "My Stupid Band", the story of a failed pop group doomed to a life of obscurity. It was published with a Manifesto that called for Food Lovers Fairs to be banned and for JG Ballard to be knighted. In 2007 the Hit Parade single "You Didn't Love Me Then", appeared on Sanctuary Records C86 double album Cd86: The Birth of Indie Pop. The 10th Hit Parade 7" single was a tribute to Le Corbusier's 'Unite D'Habitation', featuring Manchester singer Cath Carroll. "I Like Bubblegum" b/w "Zennor Mermaid" raised funds for the Porthmeor Studio in St Ives Cornwall restoration fund and was voted one of the best singles of 2010 by Drowned in Sound. Julian Henry was interviewed in The Guardian in 2011. In 2014 the Hit Parade released "Cornish Pop Songs", songs set in South West England, described by Cornishman art critic Lee Trewhela as 'the best album made about Cornwall this century" and "a glorious collection of melodic, memorable guitar-based tunes". The album was re-issued on vinyl in 2016. Henry and Watts have been recording new Hit Parade material for 2019 release ; their 13th single "Happy World", released in 2018 to mark Record Store Day was described by the Arts Desk as "the very definition of twee Eighties style indie".

Core members Keith Girdler and Paul Stewart also recorded as Arabesque and Beaumont. Blueboy formed around 1989 and initially consisted of Keith Girdler (on vocals) and Paul Stewart (on guitars), formerly of little-known band Feverfew. They soon signed to Sarah Records, releasing the home-recorded single "Clearer" in 1991, and took on more members, including singer/cellist Gemma Townley and second guitarist Harvey Williams (of The Field Mice/Another Sunny Day). "Clearer" was followed by several singles and two albums on Sarah, If Wishes Were Horses and Unisex. In October 1994, Blueboy recorded a session for John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show. Their final release, The Bank of England, was released in 1998 on Sarah head Matt Haynes' new label, Shinkansen Recordings. By then, Girdler and Stewart were the only original members of the band. Girdler and Stewart were also involved in two other bands, Arabesque and Beaumont,  and Girdler also recorded with Lovejoy. Townley later joined Trembling Blue Stars, as did Williams. Keith Girdler was diagnosed with cancer in 2004 and he died on 15 May 2007. Prior to his death he was working as volunteer manager for Age Concern in Eastbourne. In 2008, Siesta Records issued a compilation album called Country Music (Songs for Keith Girdler). The compilation was put together by Richard Preece (of Lovejoy) to raise money for the Martletts Hospice in Hove who cared for Girdler.

Both these fanzines had given away flexidiscs - indeed, Are You Scared To Get Happy? had been part of the Sha-la-la organisation, a record label set up solely to produce flexidiscs. Several Sarah releases were fanzines and flexi-discs, as it was felt this summed up the aesthetic of the label better than 12" singles and albums.[2] Sarah Records was usually seen as being grounded in the C86 jangly indie-pop sensibility, though the late Seventies DIY scene and independent yet stylish and imaginative labels such as Postcard Records, Factory and Creation, plus the mid-Eighties fanzine culture, were bigger influences. It ceased operation with the release of There and Back Again Lane, the hundredth release in the main catalogue sequence - a booklet telling the story of the label, along with a CD of representative tracks. Haynes subsequently established Shinkansen Recordings, where many Sarah artists went on to record; he now edits a zine, Smoke, dedicated to writing and art inspired by London.
