Wow, we love David Tamarkin so much, and this is such a great interview. We're old friends and have been reading David since he worked at Time Out Chicago and Epicurious—and he's now the editorial director at King Arthur Baking Company. He returns to our studio to discuss the company's terrific new book, a real doorstop called The Big Book of Bread. As the title suggests, this is the cooperative flour company's bread magnum opus, and we talk about all of it with David. Also on the show, it's the return of Three Things where Aliza and Matt discuss what is exciting in the world of restaurants, cookbooks, and the food world as a whole. On this episode: Le Veau d'Or scene report, Bawi has an amazing new flavor, Z&Z za'atar & manoushe company did a great pop-up in NYC, and has a very cool story. Also, a reminder that Dayglow sells an amazing selection of coffee and is making the most-exciting cold coffee drinks on the planet. Also! The Fort Greene dog parade had some food-themed costumes, and an Erewhon scene report including some new discoveries from Kelsi's Kitchen, Lexington Bakes, Cove Soda, and Zab's pepper sauce.Take our listener survey! We'd love to to hear who we should invite into our studio for an interview and TASTE Check.MORE FROM DAVID TAMARKIN:No-Knead Crusty White Bread [King Arthur]We Don't Need to Be Saved From Making Smoothies [NYT]This Is TASTE 162: David Tamarkin [TASTE]We Hit Peak Beverage [TASTE]See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Picture this: autumn leaves crunching beneath your feet, the distant cheers from a football stadium, and the crack of a baseball bat signaling playoff season. That's the backdrop for our latest musical escapade, filled with the sounds of Dayglow's motivational "What People Really Do" and Samara Joy's nostalgic "Autumn Nocturne." Matt and Samer, with their usual mix of humor and insight, kick things off by celebrating the eclectic mix of new tunes we've curated for October. From indie rock with a country twist to the jazz-infused echoes of the past, this episode is a celebration of the season's vibrant sounds, despite the unfortunate scorecards of the New York Jets and Giants. We also journey through the cinematic undertones of Gigi Perez's "Sailor Song," appreciating her singer-songwriter vibe, followed by a nod to Lady Gaga's vocal experimentation in the new Joker movie soundtrack. Samer and I dive into heartfelt discussions around the introspective anthems of Bishop Briggs, touching on the music industry's paradox of success. We make sure to end on a high note with Coldplay's latest, discussing how their consistent sound continues to resonate despite mixed reviews. https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/new-music-october-24/pl.u-zDD5tGxoYJ1. We're delving into the world of artist management this week when I talk to manager Drew Simmons, who's riding high with his chief client, Noah Kahan -- one of the biggest names in music today. Drew is a Partner at Foundations Artist Management in Nashville and is now at the pinnacle of his career. An expert at the human side of the business as well, Drew is well versed in managing not only careers from a business standpoint, but also focusing on the artist as a whole. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got everyone's favorite Canadian twin-sister duo Tegan and Sara in conversation with powerhouse songwriter and artist LP. Now LP has had a fascinating, winding career in the music business, starting out in the late ‘90s as a performer whose incredible voice attracted lots of attention in the industry—you'll hear about that in this chat—but who ended up kind of going through the wringer of that system. But LP turned their attention to writing songs for other people, which had an immediate and far-reaching effect: LP's compositions have been hits for the likes of Rihanna and Celine Dion, and for a while it seemed like that's where LP's career would stay. But a return to performing about ten years ago has born some incredible fruit, and with a big personality like LP's, it's not surprising that TikTok and other social media has embraced them. LP's latest album is the powerful Love Lines, check out “Dayglow” from that album, and catch LP on tour in the US right now through the end of the month; dates are at iamLP.com. The other half of today's conversation, Tegan and Sara, started making music as teenagers and were flung into the spotlight very quickly, being signed to Neil Young's record label and opening for him when they were basically still kids. But they got some good advice—you'll hear about that here—that helped the twin sisters navigate the ups and downs of fame. Over the course of 25 years they've released ten albums, a memoir that was turned into a TV series, a graphic novel, and much more. They are creative lifers, and the world is a better place because of it. Check out the song “Yellow” from Tegan and Sara's latest album Crybaby. In this lively conversation, you'll hear about two incredible, uncompromising careers. These three talk about how their music has not only inspired joy in other people, but also understanding: LP talks about visiting other countries where many people in the audience perhaps hadn't met a gay person—at least not knowingly. They get into all things Canada, the vital importance of a good monitor mix, and the primal wound that inspires creativity. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse podcast, and thanks to Tegan and Sara and LP for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the good stuff at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

Ep.14: Interview with pop artist Jess Meilman This week on SyncRiffs, Charles welcomes pop artist, Jess Meilman, to the studio for a special interview about her singles “Ketamine Kids” and “Nothing,” her musical influences, how she approaches the songwriting process, upcoming releases, and more! After her sparkling debut with the soulful indie pop tracks “Guilty Soulmate,” “Plenty,” the summer anthem “Summer Nights,” the witty “Life Is A Bitch,” and “Ketamine Kids,” the up-and-coming indie pop vocalist recently released her heartbreak anthem “Nothing” in Spring of 2023. Originally from New York, Meilman grew up singing, songwriting, and performing and was often found in her family's piano room, creating songs for hours on end. It was there that she honed her artistry, leaning into the soundscapes of Tame Impala, SZA, Dayglow, and others. Meilman quit her 9-5 in 2021 and moved to LA to bring the songs in her voice memos to life. Meilman explains her approach to crafting music simply as: “Creativity without force creates intuitive magic.” An empath, she feels things deeply and writes with a desire to connect, heal, and understand herself and the world through music. Jess turns her sensitive self-reflection into catchy tracks that hold surprising depth and come straight from the heart. Topics discussed:

On the latest episode of No Free Refills, Ezra and Tymika drink and discuss new show sponsor Dayglow Coffee while sipping on Drop Coffee's Ana Sora Ethiopia and Dayglow's own F01 before diving into the pop-culture internet phenomenon of stan culture. Grinnell College describes fan culture, or fandom, as a term that “describes communities built around a shared enjoyment of an aspect of popular culture, such as books, movies, TV shows, bands, sports or sports teams, etc. Fan cultures are examples of participatory cultures. Participatory cultures involve fans acting not only as consumers but also as producers and creators of some form of creative media. Though most fan cultures, including sports fans and fans of music groups, have elements of participatory culture, media fandom in particular encourages creative expression and artistic production by its participants.” What separates your typical fandom with standom is a combination of rabid loyalty, social media, and a bit of stalker behavior. NPR explains, “while some say the term is a combination of ‘fan' and ‘stalker,' ‘stan' was first coined in 2000 when Eminem dropped a twisted allegory in a song called ‘Stan,' about a man who was pushed to the edge when his idol wouldn't answer his fan mail. The word used to be synonymous with overzealous or obsessed. But nearly 20 years later, it's become a badge of honor for fans committed enough to show up and go all out for their favorite star on the Internet.” NPR warns, “if motivated enough, stans that congregate on social media actually can change the trajectory of their artist's path — and the life of anyone who stands in the way. This shift in power dynamics can even dictate what kind of music the artist makes, how they perform it and who gets to hear it. It's creating a feedback loop that can reward performative online personas more than genuine artistic vision.” Stan communities discussed: Nicki Minaj – The Barbz Rihanna – Navy Beyoncé – BeyHive Mariah Carey – The Lambily Stalkers discussed: Ricardo López Recommendations: The Meaning of Mariah Carey (on audiobook — Mariah Carey both reads and sings)

After countless garage jams, D.I.Y. gigs in the back of a surf shop, and innumerable hours writing together, almost monday bottle California sunshine in their funky basslines, ecstatic choruses, and danceable grooves. The band, first emerging in 2020, has racked up more than 84 million overall streams, uplifting audiences everywhere in the process. Originally from San Diego, the trio—Dawson Daugherty (vocals), Cole Clisby (guitar) and Luke Fabry (bass)—crafted their 2020 debut EP don't say you're ordinary in Brooklyn and Los Angeles with producers Mark Needham (The Killers, Fleetwood Mac) and Simon Oscroft (The Naked and Famous, DREAMERS). It ignited a string of buzzing anthems, beginning with “parking lot view” and “come on come on.” Meanwhile, the lead single “broken people,” and the Sofi Tukker remix, crystallized their sun-kissed signature style with a bold bass bounce and empowering refrain as it cracked the Top 20 at Alternative Radio. Along the way, they've attracted a growing fan base through a combination of danceable rhythms and uplifting hooks. In 2021, they set the stage for their second EP til the end of time with “live forever,” receiving praise from Alternative Press, Forbes, People, GQ Australia, Earmilk, Flaunt, Ones To Watch, and more. The band followed it with a new single “cool enough," made their festival debut at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, BottleRock and Firefly, and graced stages with Kings of Leon, Dayglow, Walk The Moon and Joywave. Now, almost monday continue to accelerate their momentum with their new single “sunburn” and remain the consummate purveyors of future-facing California pop. ——— Welcome to The Pal's Podcast hosted by George Boutsalis and Ricky Liorti. Staci talks to Greg Bjorkman, the director of a new music-centric feature film, Press Play. It's about a young couple who are in a relationship that centers around a shared love of music; there's also a sci-fi element with time travel… oh, and death! The soundtrack includes songs by Japanese Breakfast, Father John Misty, Dayglow, and more—which Greg will talk about, as well as his thoughts on why there is so much classic rock in new content that's aimed at younger people, and he shares his own personal rock and roll nightmare. Lastly, Staci reads from her bestselling new book, Rock & Roll Nightmares: True Stories, Vol One, which covers the death of The Who's drummer, Keith Moon.
