Preaching to the Dead? Mormon Theology Gone Wrong

Did Jesus really preach the gospel to the dead? And is there a second chance to accept salvation after we die?In this video, we explore the origin of the Mormon doctrine of spirit-world missionary work, based on Doctrine and Covenants 138 and Joseph F. Smith's 1918 vision. Using 1 Peter 3:18-20 and 1 Peter 4:6, Mormonism teaches that people can accept the LDS gospel after death—but does that line up with what the Bible actually says? We'll contrast the LDS interpretation with the biblical view and explain why this second-chance theology isn't just wrong—it's dangerous.

Something extraordinary is happening on college campuses across America. While headlines often focus on political activism or social trends among Gen Z, a powerful spiritual awakening is taking root that deserves our attention.UniteUS represents the latest wave in this movement - a structured revival approach that's quickly spreading from campus to campus with remarkable results. We traveled to Baylor University to witness UniteUS firsthand, giving you a front-row seat to what God is doing. That night, approximately 250 students made decisions for Christ, including an atheist who had simply followed the crowd to the event. But perhaps most remarkable were the hundreds of students who flooded the stage when challenged to commit to ministry and missions. We interviewed Matt Baksa, a Baylor senior who's foregoing law school to pursue missions among unreached people groups in Africa. His story represents countless others making radical decisions in response to God's call. "There are 3.4 billion people that will never have the opportunity to even accept the possibility [of knowing Christ] without us going to tell them," Matt explained, capturing the urgency motivating this generation.Whether you're curious about spiritual movements among Gen Z, seeking encouragement about the future of faith in America, or feeling the stirring to answer a similar call, this episode offers a glimpse into what could be the beginning of a significant spiritual awakening. Helpful links:See it live on YouTube!https://youtu.be/8x5F3WkXibw?si=FgYj5jB1b-3cf31WUniteUSPray for the Nations with OneWay's PrayercastUniteUS Baylor, CBN News StoryBaylor's FM72Baylor UniversityOne80 on Asbury Revival of 2023One80 on College Football AwakeningHowtoLife MovementThe Send ConferenceThe Passion ConferenceJohn 14:6Luke 10:2Let us know what you thought of the show!Follow One80 on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or our website.Never miss a One80. The early Christian church experienced remarkable growth within 15 years of Pentecost, spreading through ordinary believers across the known world. Early Jewish Christians faced severe social and economic persecution for their faith, including family rejection and business losses. Two major distortions emerged: hyper-legalism demanding Torah observance for salvation, and hyper-grace dismissing the need for moral behavior. True biblical salvation encompasses justification by faith, sanctification through works, and ultimate glorification, while emphasizing the power of words to reflect heart condition.Key Verses:James 3:1James 3:5-6Luke 6:45Matthew 12:36-37Key Takeaways:The early church faced significant persecution and sacrificed everything for their faith. Two major distortions of the gospel - hyper-legalism and hyper-grace - continue to challenge the church today. Our words have tremendous power to either build up or destroy.True wisdom from above is pure, peace-loving, and full of mercy.Authentic faith requires real surrender and will cost us something.Reflection Questions:How does understanding the historical context of early Christians help us better understand their struggles and sacrifices? What are some ways you see the distortions of hyper-legalism or hyper-grace in today's church? How do you balance grace and obedience in your own walk with Christ? What does it mean that 'the tongue is a fire'? How have you seen this play out in your life? How can we ensure our words reflect godly wisdom rather than earthly wisdomWhat does it mean to have a faith that 'costs something'?How can we guard against distorting the gospel to make it more comfortable or convenient? What practical steps can we take to ensure our words build up rather than destroy?Practical Application:This week, carefully monitor your words, especially in difficult situations. Before speaking, ask yourself: 'Is this reflecting God's wisdom? Will these words build up or tear down?'Support the show

The other times I read it, I read that part correctly. However, here is the verse: "Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest'? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest."When I said, "Seeking out people; saving people; restoring people to relationship with God; forgiving our sins" I was referring to what Jesus does. I was not implying that we ourselves can save people, restore them to relationship with God, or forgive their sins. Nevertheless, Jesus works through us.I paraphrased John 7:17. Here is the exact quote: "If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority."Support the Show.If you feel so led, you can support the podcast by clicking HERE or by clicking the "Support the show" button above. There is an attitude that can slip into the church that would cause people to fall victim to a mindset of inadequacy and insecurity. What should be understood is that there is a molding process at work in every life - a process that is often extremely difficult. If we can realize that God is using the trials of life to shape us, we can be loosed from a mindset of defeat. 01/28/2024 - Sunday MorningScriptures Used (In Order of Occurrence):Jeremiah 18:1-6Luke 15:11-12, 17-20Psalm 115:4-8

Preaching a compelling Christmas message is a challenging assignment. How can we stay fresh year after year? Let me offer a few suggestions.1. Capture the true wonder of Christmas. Set it in the total context of the drama of redemption. 2. Avoid allegorical and sentimental approaches. Christmas messages focusing exclusively on the “sweet, precious baby in the manger” are inadequate and irresponsible. Like the flood account of Genesis, the Christmas story is a story of God's supernatural provision of Himself as Immanuel. At the same time, Scripture indicates that Immanuel was born to be our Savior, who would die as our substitute to deliver us from judgment.3. Explore less familiar texts. Tackle texts like Micah 5:2-5 contain the prophecy related to Bethlehem and assert the coming of the One who will be great to the “ends of the earth.” Consider also Zechariah's Benedictus in Luke 1:67-79. In this passage, Zechariah refers to Jesus as the “Horn of Salvation,” referring not to a musical instrument but to an animal's offensive weapons—horns. The following Bible passages make excellent preaching texts. Old TestamentNumbers 24:15–17Isaiah 11:1–10Psalm 2Isaiah 40:1–11Psalm 8Ezekiel 34:22–24Isaiah 9:1–7 (esp. v. 6)Micah 5:2New TestamentMatthew 1:18–25John 1:1–4Matthew 2:1–11John 1:1–14Matthew 2:13–232 Corinthians 8:9Luke 1:5–252 Corinthians 9:15Luke 1:26–38Galatians 4:4–6Luke 1:39–45Philippians 2:1–8Luke 1:46–56Colossians 1:15–20Luke 1:57–661 Timothy 1:15Luke 1:67–801 Timothy 3:16Luke 2:1–7Hebrews 2:14–18Luke 2:1–20Hebrews 4:14–16Luke 2:21Hebrews 10:5–7Luke 2:22–384. Connect the cradle and the cross. While Jesus entered this world as an infant in Bethlehem, grew up in Nazareth, called disciples to follow Him, healed the sick, and fed the poor, the author of Hebrews asserts that He was born to die (2:14-15).5. Intensify exposition of the wonder of the incarnation. Remind hearers that the Word did indeed become flesh. Help them grasp in some measure the reality of the Almighty as an infant of inches. Don't allow them to think of the infancy of Jesus without presSupport the showSubscribe to this podcast. Leave us a review. Point your friends to this podcast.Contact me at: alancarr@gmail.com. Paul's discussion of marriage and head coverings in 1 Corinthians 11 has often been mischaracterized. When we cut through the historical weeds, we see a gospel-centered plea for unity, modesty, and marital interdependence.Readings from this service:1 Corinthians 11: 1-16Psalm 8: 3-6Luke 10: 38-42Thanks for listening! I just want to talk about the Bible

In this episode we talk about experiencing emotional healing from the Lord. The quote that I referenced from my pastor was: "If our past is still affecting us, it's not our past."Here are the items that we talked through:God sees you, and He cares. He understands. His heart is one of compassion towards you.Cry out to Him. Where there is no prayer there is no progress.Apply Romans 8:28-29 to the sources of the pain.Give thanks in all circumstances. Here are some of the main Scriptures I used/referenced:2 Corinthians 3:17Isaiah 61:1-3Luke 4:16-30Psalm 139:23-24John 16:33John 14:27Psalm 34:18Psalm 4:7Psalm 16:11Galatians 5:22-23Genesis 16:13Matthew 6:8Matthew 6:32Hebrews 4:14-16Matthew 8:2-3John 4:46-54Matthew 9:35-36Matthew 15:32Hebrews 13:8Romans 8:1Matthew 19:13-15Matthew 23:1-36Matthew 11:16-19Matthew 11:28-30Psalm 23:1-3aJeremiah 17:9Psalm 107:6Luke 18:1-8Luke 11:5-13Psalm 30:2Psalm 30:11-122 Corinthians 12:7-10Romans 8:28-291 Thessalonians 5:16-18Philippians 4:6-7Galatians 6:2**CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS**I say that the account of Jesus reading from the scroll of Isaiah was at the end of Luke 4. It is actually closer to the middle of Luke 4.At one point I referenced "Psalm 38". The correct reference is Psalm 34:18.When discussing the Angel of the Lord, I mentioned that this was the seedbed for the Trinity. By saying this I was not implying that the Trinity did not always exist. All three Members of the Trinity have always existed from eternity past. My point was simply to address the wrong idea that the Trinity is a New Testament invention, which it clearly is not. We discuss the Trinity more in episode 25 entitled "The Trinity". I mentioned that "Hagar" meant "the immigrant". While I originally heard this from a reputable source that I trust, I had trouble finding this definition while double checking. Another suggested meaning of the name is "to flee".I referred to an incident where a man came and asked Jesus to heal his servant who was in bed and Jesus did and when the man returned the next day he was told that his servant recovered at the very hour that he had been speaking with Jesus. I accidentally combined multiple accounts in my mind. It was not the man's servant but his son. The account is recorded in John 4:46-54.At one point I said, "Here we agree with things, but here we believe them." I pointed to my head and then to my heart when saying this.Feel free to email any questions or comments you have to ijustwanttotalkabout@gmail.com.
