The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry - Part 4
When you're constantly hurrying from one thing to the next, it's almost impossible to be the dad you want to be. In this episode, you'll hear: ✅ The moment his son flinched and why it became the turning point ✅ How emotional regulation helps you stay in the "green zone" with your kids ✅ Why your role isn't to be Superman—it's to be the chief repenter ✅ The power of visioning your 80th birthday party (and reverse engineering it!) This conversation will challenge you to slow down, stay steady, and stop letting your kids catch the shrapnel. LEAVE A VOICE MESSAGE for DadAwesome - share your QUESTIONS here Summary: What happens when the pace of your life is stealing your ability to be present with your kids? In this episode, Tyler Graham shares the moment his son flinched when he sat down beside him—and how that changed everything. You'll hear why emotional regulation might be the most important skill any dad can develop, how living at three miles per hour creates space for real connection, and why being the chief repenter in your home is more powerful than being Superman. Takeaways: Dads need to be the thermostat, not the thermometer—setting the tone rather than reacting to it. When a dad blows up, the kids catch the shrapnel, and those moments leave lasting impressions. Emotional regulation is one of the most critical skills for fatherhood—learning to respond from the green zone instead of the red or blue. Vision is essential: imagine your child's eulogy or your 80th birthday party and reverse engineer the habits you need today. Your role as a dad isn't to be Superman—it's to be the chief repenter, modeling humility and grace for your kids. Guest Bio: Tyler Graham is a dad of six, founder of Three Mile Per Hour Fatherhood, and a passionate advocate for helping fathers slow down and live at the pace of presence. Through coaching cohorts and resources, Tyler encourages dads to develop emotional regulation, break generational patterns, and build a compelling vision for their family's future. He lives with his wife and six kids on their homestead, where they're building a legacy rooted in connection, intentionality, and grace. Quotes "I cannot be the type of dad I want to be when I'm in a hurry." "When a dad blows up, the kids catch the shrapnel." "A dad's role is not to be Superman. A dad's role is to be the chief repenter." "Dads need to be the thermostat, not the thermometer—set the tone, don't react to it." "My son flinched when I sat down. In this episode, we explore the gift of tears and the importance of allowing ourselves to cry. We reflect on our experiences with crying and talk about how tears, especially in painful moments, can be a powerful expression of surrender, lament, and hope when offered to God. With the help of the Holy Spirit, our sensitivity and capacity to cry reflect the way we were beautifully created to respond to what breaks God's heart. We discuss the vulnerability of crying, the pain of resisting it, and how Jesus crying out on the cross reveals the value of our own cries. Whether you're too tired to cry, afraid to show need, or already feel safe expressing emotion, we invite you to see crying as an act of worship and intercession. In our sorrow, God meets us with love, truth, and the hope that He can actually do something with our pain. Other Resources Mentioned: Pope Leo XIV's General Audience of September 10, 2025 The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer Journal Questions: When was the last time I cried? What would it look like for me to cry well? Where has my heart been repressed? Where do I need to cry out? Discussion Questions: How did Pope Leo's words change your perspective on crying? How are you tempted to give in to cynicism? In what ways are you self-reliant in this season of life? How can you be an empathetic witness to someone crying out in their life? Quote to Ponder: “Finally, she asks God to give her a gift of tears to draw his mercy down upon the world, and especially upon his church. In one of her visions, Catherine records having been told by God: “If you open your mind's eye you will see that the Holy Spirit weeps in the person of every one of my servants who offers me the fragrance of holy desire and constant humble prayer.” (St. Catherine of Sienna, The Dialogue Study Edition) “We are accustomed to thinking of crying out as something disorderly, to be repressed. The Gospel confers an immense value to our cry, reminding us that it can be an invocation, a protest, a desire, a surrender. It can even be the extreme form of prayer, when there are no words left. In that cry, Jesus gave all that he had left: all his love, all his hope.” (General Audience, September 10, 2025, Pope Leo XIV) Scripture for Lectio: “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Psalm 22:1) Sponsor - Beata Home: This episode is sponsored by Beata Home, a boutique-style print shop founded by Katie, a wife and mom of four. Week 2 of The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry dives into the real cost of a rushed life. Hurry drains us physically, emotionally, and spiritually—it steals our joy, dries up our love, and drowns out God's still, small voice. Scripture reminds us to slow down, to rest, and to trust that God's plan for us includes peace, margin, and Sabbath (Ecclesiastes 4:6, Psalms 23, Mark 2:27).We hurry because of fear—fear of missing out, falling behind, or not mattering. But Jesus calls us to lay down fear and live with faith: not the absence of doubt, but obedience in the middle of it. When we slow our pace and seek first the Kingdom (Matthew 6:33), we discover that God's rest is exactly what our souls have been longing for.#crossbridgechurch #RuthlessEliminationOfHurry #FaithOverFear #RestInHim #BeStillAndKnow
The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry reminds us that a hurried life is not a Christlike life. Jesus calls us to lay down our obsession with stuff, time, and priorities that distract us, and instead find rest and joy in Him alone (Matthew 11:28–30). When we make Him greater, the things that once consumed us grow smaller in light of His presence.True joy is not the same as fleeting happiness—it's a fruit of the Spirit that comes from aligning our lives with God's desires. At the end of the day, Jesus + nothing = everything, and everything – Jesus = nothing.#crossbridgechurch #RuthlessEliminationOfHurry #JesusIsGreater #JoyInChrist #FaithOverHurry

Our culture makes it hard to slow down. Depending on your stage of life, it might feel nearly impossible — jobs, kids, commitments, constant demands. So what's the solution? Learn from the life of Jesus. Live at his speed — not a rushed speed, not a distracted pace. Can you picture Jesus cutting people off in traffic, or glued to his phone while talking to someone? Of course not! And as disciples, we are called to conform our lives to His: to slow down, to live attentively. We made it y'all! This is the Season 3 finale of Wrestling With Life, and wow—what a ride it's been. This season was all about stepping boldly in faith, chasing those God-sized dreams, and trusting Him even when the path felt totally unclear. I got to sit down with some of the most inspiring, faith-filled humans right here in my hometown of Wilmington, NC. We talked about building businesses from scratch, walking through the unknown, and leaning on Jesus through it all. God's hand has been all over these conversations. I'm just in awe of how He shows up when we choose to trust Him and say yes. We're closing out this series with one last solo episode talking about: Why more money won't actually make you happier How releasing a mindset of lack and stepping into gratitude opens up opportunities The way God has provided in my business in the first 3 months If you've been rocking with me all season—thank you. And if this is your first episode, you picked a good one. Thanks to all of the amazing guests who made this season possible! Let's wrap this thing up together and celebrate what He's done.

When I read John Mark Comer's "The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry," I was excited to see how his approach to clothing aligns with my philosophy. Wardrobe simplicity eliminates hurry and restores peace by removing unnecessary decisions from your day, allowing you to focus on what truly matters. In this episode, I share four essential questions to ask before any purchase and I explain why having fewer, better garments creates space for what truly matters. The American expectation that women should rarely repeat outfits doesn't just clutter our closets—it complicates our mornings and clouds our minds. This week's episode includes a practical challenge: Create your two favorite outfits for the current season and experience the liberation that comes when wardrobe decisions become effortless. Luke and Seth discuss the wisdom literature and how to apply it to various seasons of life. Wisdom, or skill, is seasonal and contextual. How do we apply the Song of Songs? What dangers are there if we apply the book of Ecclesiastes too quickly? Can we run before we walk when it comes to wisdom?
Dallas Willard challenges us to "ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life." John Mark Comer was so moved by this line, he titled his book "The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry." We wonder why we can't hear the voice of God, or find his presence in the busy-ness of life. Perhaps the still, small voice still speaks in those inner rooms and deserted places Jesus chose to frequent throughout his life. Could it be that "doing more" is actually standing in the way of "being with"?The sermon today is titled "Wasting Time With God." It is the eighth installment in our series "Follow Me", and the fourth in the sub-series "Be With Jesus." The Scripture reading is from Luke 10:38-42 (ESV). Originally preached at the West Side Church of Christ (Searcy, AR) on March 23, 2025. All lessons fit under one of 6 broad categories: Begin, Instill, Discover, Grow, Learn, and Serve. Slowing down is one of the hardest things to do in our modern culture. We are told to "earn your value" and then filled with lots of quick easy distractions to fill our leftover time. Yet, slowing down is exactly what we need to get physically, mentally, and spiritually healthy. In this episode, I'm sharing my recent experience of slowing down: a Disney cruise with 19 family members. And what I learned from 6 days without text, email, social media. And challenging you to a week of slowing down. It's in those times that the clarity and true connections in life start to shine through. Plus, I'm sharing a few great thoughts and resources to help you intentionally slow down. If you are ready to start your own Healthy Me Reset, head to www.emilyvinzantmd.com and come work with me! During almost every waking moment in our culture, there is a battle for our attention: News headlines preying on our fear or our anger; social media feeds expertly designed to keep us scrolling; click-bait ads that we just can't help but click on… And as our attention gets gobbled up, our most important priorities slip further away. So in today's sermon we'll explore a powerful biblical passage that challenges us to intentionally guard our attention so that we don't lose focus on the One who matters most. When we're feeling exhausted, our culture offers us lots of ways we can rest. Whether it's shopping, Netflix, spa days, or vacations, the possibilities for physical and mental rest are endless. But sometimes we try all of that only to find that we're still exhausted. Our rest didn't work! Often, that's because we're too focused on the wrong kind of rest. In today's sermon, we'll learn from Jesus about a kind of rest that most of us desperately need but rarely think about. And we'll learn one super practical way to incorporate this important kind of rest into our daily lives. Join us as we continue our series inspired by the book, The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry. We humans instinctively hate feeling limited. When we're told “you can't,” or “that's enough,” or “you must,” we tend to bristle and push back. But while that defiant spirit is sometimes justified, it's often destructive to us. In fact, our stubborn determination to live without any limits is a driving force behind the relentless pace of our lives and our constant exhaustion. So in today's sermon, we'll explore how Jesus invites us to embrace our limitedness, finding true purpose and deep rest in the process. And as we celebrate Dr. King this weekend, we'll learn about a pivotal decision he made to embrace his personal limits that ultimately empowered his leadership in the Civil Rights movement. Practicing the Way with John Mark ComerThe start of a new year prompts the reflection that if we are not intentionally modeling our life after Jesus, we are likely being formed by something or someone else. Adrift in the cultural current, we're likely to be carried to places we never consciously chose and wonder how we got there. In Practicing the Way, John Mark Comer explores what it means in our times to be a disciple of Jesus -- to be with him, to become like him, and to do as he did:“ It seems to me that the telos of the spiritual journey in the Christian way is becoming a person of love through deepening union with the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit…It's the two greatest commandments: love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself, that Jesus put at the center of apprenticeship to him.” - John Mark ComerWe hope this conversation encourages you to move slowly as you abide with Jesus this year, and by his grace are transformed into a person of deeper love, joy, and peace. This podcast is an edited version of a conversation recorded in 2024. Whether you're seeking a deeper connection with God or looking for ways to simplify your life, this conversation is full of encouragement to set your sights on a higher purpose.About Whitney |Whitney Lowe is a Christian influencer who wants to see young women excited about God's work: in the Bible, in history, in the world, and in themselves. She writes and creates on Instagram at ScribbleDevs, a project born from the realization that young women simply do not interact with the Bible enough to be changed by its truth. Whitney is passionate about disrupting the toxic scroll of social media with hope, peace, and light straight from Scripture. She lives in Denver, Colorado, with her husband—a pastor—and their two young children.Links Discussed in This Episode |Order a Copy of Minimalist Moms: Living and Parenting with SimplicityPrevious Episode: John Mark Comer Discusses the Ruthless Elimination of Hurry (Bonus Episode)Whitney's Resource: 1-2-3 Magic by Thomas Phelan | How to Talk So Little Kids Will Listen by Joanna FaberWhitney Can't Stop Talking About: Era by BrumateConnect with Whitney:IG + FB + TikTokEpisode Sponsors |The Minimalist Moms Podcast would not be possible without the support of weekly sponsors. Growing up with an emotionally abusive father, Kim Tschirret believed she needed to perform for love and approval. She found solace during her turbulent adolescence in taking care of her horse. After she met Christ, He began to heal her and eventually led her to open an equine therapy ministry to help kids in crisis find healing. Today, she shares how God's steadfast love has taught her to rest in Him and share His comfort with others. Hope Reins The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer The Church today is often seen as irrelevant. But this couldn't be further from the truth. At the Colson Center, we believe the Church is God's gift to the world, called to be present and active in this cultural moment without being taken captive by it. In other words, the Church is meant to “move the world,” not move with the world. That's why we equip believers with a Christian worldview through our media, training programs, and events—because a Church that “moves the world” starts with one faithful Christian. We need your help to continue strengthening the Church in 2025. Thanks to a generous matching donation, every gift between now and December 31 will be DOUBLED until we meet the full match. Help us strengthen the Church to move the world in 2025. Make a gift with double the impact at colsoncenter.org/swdecember. The Strong Women Podcast is a product of the Colson Center ,which equips Christians to live out their faith with clarity, confidence, and courage in this cultural moment. Through commentaries, podcasts, videos, and more, we help Christians better understand what's happening in the world, and champion what is true and good wherever God has called them.
