In Week 16 of our Sermon on the Mount series, Pastor Aaron McRae leads us through one of the most compelling sections of Jesus' teaching — a warning about choices, character, and counterfeit spirituality. Drawing from Matthew 7:13–29, this message explores the narrow vs. wide gate, true vs. false prophets, and the ultimate test of a life built on Jesus.Jesus calls us to a higher standard — not just external behavior but inward transformation. We're challenged to examine the voices we follow, the fruit we bear, and the foundation we build our lives upon. This sermon unpacks how to discern truth in a world full of false promises and how to recognize those who distort God's Word for selfish gain.**Big Idea: We must choose whose voice we trust to speak for God — and live accordingly. Jesus alone is the way, the truth, and the life.**Topics Covered:The narrow and wide gates (Matthew 7:13–14)False prophets in sheep's clothingGood vs. bad fruit (Galatians 5)Activity without intimacy: “I never knew you”Building your life on the rock, not sandResources & Scripture References:Scripture:Matthew 7:13–29Matthew 16:24, John 14:6Galatians 5:19–23John 10:10, John 15:1–5Deuteronomy 30:15–20, Joshua 24:151 John 4:2, 1 Corinthians 12:3, 2 Peter 2:1–3Authors & Quotes:John Mark Comer, Live No Lies – “We make our decisions, and then our decisions make us…”Jonathan T. This week, we're continuing our series on the life of Joseph by exploring the theme of integrity. Joseph consistently makes the right choices, even when faced with difficulties. Standing firm in doing what is right, even when it may not lead to immediate blessings, is the life of integrity we should strive for. Listen in to hear what it looks like to make tough choices and stand firm in difficult situations. Joseph is our model for seasons in our own life that feel confining. He perseveres in doing the next right thing, even when he finds himself in a place that feels not like what he signed up for. Anybody relate to that? When you're in a season that isn't what you wanted, what does it look like to do the next right thing? Here's the secret. The secret is not trying harder. It's not gripping more tightly to what you wish was true. It's not shaming yourself into being better. True love and true righteousness do not materialize by gripping for it. This kind of love and righteousness comes from fixing our eyes on Jesus. That's what gives us the ability to stand up against the forces of the world that often come against us. Our faith is grown in difficult seasons. And in those difficult seasons, we get a very narrow focus and we focus on one day at a time. We ask God to give us the strength to show up with humility and love for the day that he has for us. Pastor Jonty and Rev Ness discuss one of life's biggest questions - what happens to us when we die? What does heaven look like? What does hell look like? Do they even exist? Does God send people to hell to suffer for all of eternity? For many people the answers that they have been given for these questions have been the reasons why they have left the faith or rejected the idea that there is a God that loves us. So let's talk about it!"Gehanna" passages:Matthew 5:22Matthew 5:29Matthew 5:30Matthew 10:28Matthew 18:9Matthew 23:15Matthew 23:33Mark 9:43Mark 9:45Mark 9:47Luke 12:5James 3:6"Tartarus" passage: 2 Peter 2:4Join our Facebook community group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/373445507761084Timestamps:0:00 - Intro0:30 - Acknowledgement of Country1:00 - Theme song1:14 - Welcome5:06 - Near-death experiences9:23 - What does heaven look like?26:27 - What does hell look like? 42:30 - Does hell even exist? It's easier to talk about the Jesus who walks on water than the Jesus who made the disciples get in the boat before the winds and waves pulled their boat from land and soaked the disciples to their bones. The wind was against them. Which is an understatement sort of like when someone asks you “how's it going?” and you say “OK”. The wind was against them in the kind of way that took control of their boat from them and threatened death. It's great that Jesus walked on water in a storm, but if you ignore the reality that He also made the disciples go out into what just might have killed them, you'll miss the point. Both were done out of mercy. In the middle of the night, surrounded by death, the deeper truth is that Jesus rescued the disciples from the misconception that calm is the same as peace. When Christianity confuses calm for peace, it offers neither. But still, so often, we want to describe our faith as a calmed storm, not a present Lord. We imagine that a thriving faith is the kind that can walk on water and not sink, but I wonder how many of the people who'd criticize St. Peter for the doubt that sunk him into the sea also took swimming lessons. “O ye of little faith, why did you doubt?” O ye of little faith, why would you think that would stop God from working. The disciples were anything but calm. Peter doubted. God still saved. All of this is given to you so you'll stop measuring the storm, stop measuring the calm, stop measuring your faith, and start looking to your God. Christianity is not Christians copying Jesus to walk on water. It's Jesus pulling up sinking sinners. He reaches down into death and pulls us back out. He dies upon the cross for you and rises from the dead, taking you with Him. And if Christ can pull you out of the grave, go ahead and let your calm be damaged. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.-Pastor Harrison Goodman is Content Executive for Higher Things.Audio Reflections Speaker: Pastor Jonathan Lackey is the Pastor at Grace Lutheran Church, Vine Grove, Ky.Study Christ's words on the cross to see how you can show more Christlike grace in your life. In this episode I share three things that the Lord does in us through difficulties. There are certainly many more things, but these three are things He has highlighted to me recently. As a recap, those three things are:He wraps His arms around us and comforts us (and also teaches us how to comfort others). He teaches us to rely on Him instead of ourselves. He teaches us meekness. Also, here is the declaration I wrote about meekness that I share in the episode: "The Lord is teaching me meekness. I don't get angry when things don't go my way. The times when I'm insulted, criticized, slandered, spoken against, or disrespected are simply the training grounds for learning meekness." The word Hell does not appear at all in the Old Testament. And therefore there is no Old Testament model to substantiate any new testament doctrine of hell and Damnation. Now, hold on, I am not saying that there is not a judgment and that there is not a punishment and I am not saying that God does not deal with sin. What I am saying, is that in the light of accurate translation of the New Testament we discovered that the word for punishment Colossus in Greek is more aptly and correctly translated "chastisement". The root word of it means pruning. And you know what happens when a gardener prunes a rose bush? It gets stronger and grows healthier and becomes more beautiful. Sound doctrine is a requirement for salvation, but if you don't also learn to walk in faith, all the doctrine in the world won't save you. We may have an impression of what grace may look like, but it is different upon reflection. God's grace is an expression of favor that may show up in ways we can not imagine. The life of Leon Bailey, Sr was a demonstration of faith that expressed grace in ways that one would not imagine. May God rest his soul in peace. Amen.God bless,Rev LeonEphesians 2:4-9Matthew 11:28-29Matthew 20:1-16
Sermon on the mount series message 27Text: Matthew 7:28-29Matthew's commentary, after Jesus finishes speaking, is as important as the words themselves. The reaction of the crowd is vital to help us appreciate the weight of what was said. Jesus did not speak as their religious leaders did, He did so with authority! This was none other than the Son of God coming to destroy the works of the devil and expose the religion of externalities and carnal pride! We do well to listen to all of what Jesus taught, certainly not just the parts we like or the words that are popular today.

Today’s episode of Faith Made Welcome is something of a bonus episode! If you’ve been listening to this podcast on faith brought to you by Commonwealth Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia for the last four weeks, you know that we’ve been digging into a conversation about science and faith with Dr. Graham Walker of McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia. In this episode of the podcast, Cheri, Marty, Paul and Robin take some time to debrief from that rich discussion. Recorded immediately after our wrap up with Graham, the Faith Made Welcome Crew tucked in for a conversation that largely turned toward an exploration of doubt. It’s driven by a lot of questions: What is the nature of doubt? What do our doubts ask of us? What’s the difference between doubt and curiosity? How do we make space for doubt in a faith community? We walk together through a dialogue about skepticism, fear, and consequences that come with faith and doubt. Join us as we wrestle with how knowledge and questions go together and explore the beauty that’s possible when we dare to change our minds! Scripture Mentioned this EpisodeJohn 20: 19-29Matthew 19: 16-30 Additional Materials Mentioned this EpisodeWe’ve elected to list these references in the order they appear:Dan Quayle: Robin references the potato debacle Robin Williams: Robin notes that Graham Walker is to theology what Robin Williams was to comedy.Roman Empire: Paul makes a reference to the Roman Empire as a good example of what happens when we try to hold a society to uniform belief.Buy-in bias: PaulRachel Held Evans: Robin references her journey with doubt, which she’s written about in Searching for Sunday, Nicole Nordeman: Robin reference’s her song “Dear Me” song, which both her and Cheri love. Paul Heilker: Cheri references the dedication at the opening of his book The Essay, which highlights the importance being allowed to change one’s mind.Paul Fitzgerald’s Blog - Cheri asks Paul to say more about an experience with a student changing her mind, which he blogged about in “Further Thoughts on Apocalypse Beans!” John Kerry - Paul mentions him as an example of someone penalized for changing their mind.Leaving Church - Barbara Brown Taylor - Cheri Made Robin talk about this book. Robin also summaries here new book. Title not remembered. James Fowler: We discuss again Fowler’s six stages of faith, which are discussed in his book by the same name: Stages of Faith; Mother Teresa and Jimmy Carter are held up as possible Level Sixes. Gallop Strength Finder: We joke that there isn’t a test to determine your faith stage like there is one to determine your strengths (although everyone on today’s podcast has done the Strengths assessment BUT PAUL).Nadia Bolz Weber - Marty tells a story once told by Weber about talking with someone who doesn’t believe, to which Weber replied “I wish I could pull that off!”Graham Walker - Marty tells us that Graham always instilled in his students the importance of always continuing to read. Peter Enns: Cheri mentioned his book Sin of Certainty, which she read as part of Marty’s Sunday School class at CBC; that book rocked her world. Paul is also a regular listener of Enns’ podcast The Bible For Normal People. About This PodcastThis podcast was envisioned as means to foster spiritual growth and conversations about faith, both within and beyond the faith community at Commonwealth Baptist Church. At the open of this episode, we discuss what spiritual formation means to our CBC pastors and the role community plays in our concept of faith. On this episode of the #CreateYourEarthLife podcast I will be discussing the information I have gathered to share with you on what Christian's and the Bible say about surrogacy. As someone who is newly Christian, I am questioning everything in my life, including the surrogacy journey I am on.Brief Transcript:I want to start off with saying, I am not here to judge or to tell you what you should or should not do, I am just here to relay the information I have learned about what the Bible and what Christians say about Surrogacy. I personally was shocked. I thought being a surrogate mother was a great thing that I was doing and didn’t think that God would think differently. As I have been doing research, there is a possibility that God does feel differently, but that is not for me to decide. God’s job is to judge us. I believe my job is to share the word of God and to do everything in life with the intentions of worshipping God.Surrogacy is mentioned twice in the book of Genesis:Genesis 16: 1-8 and Genesis 30: 1-10The Bible also says:Genesis 2:24Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.Psalm 127:3Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.Luke 23:29For Behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’Lastly, being a Christian means leaving your own desires behind and worshipping God in everything you do.. so while making any decision in life, think to yourself, “Is this to get my own way or am I doing this to bring glory to God?”As 1 Corinthians 10:31 says-So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.This is the information I have gathered from Bible scriptures. Now I am going to discuss what I learned from listening to the podcast Relatable hosted by Allie Beth Stuckey Episode 254.Allie discusses the Christian perspective of IVF and the dilemma’s. The two that stick out to me that she discussed: Multiple eggs are taken from a women’s body and are fertilized by a man’s sperm, then some are placed to be implanted into into the woman’s or another woman’s womb, and the rest are frozen... Abandoned or Destroyed (Abortion)IVF makes easier eugenicsWhen Allie discusses surrogacy specifically she says that traditional surrogacy, which is what is discusses in the book of genesis, (the baby’s actual biological mother is the surrogate) can cause problems emotionally and psychologically for both Surrogate Mother and baby. Whereas, gestational surrogates (what I am.. using my womb to grow someone else’s fertilized egg), has the dilemma of the surrogate causing risk to her health because of taking and injecting hormones. From an article called Basic Bioethics: What Christian’s should know about surrogacy Written by Joe CarterHe says the problems with surrogacy are:Exploitation of womanSelling of childrenThe violation of the marital covenantThe use of embryo destruction reproductive technologyJoe says that the only ethical form of surrogacy is “Rescue Surrogacy” which is when a surrogate volunteers her womb to save an IVF created embryo that has been frozen and destined for destruction.Judging Others- Matthew 7:1-29Matthew 22:39“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”If you are having difficulty making the decision as a christian to be a surrogate or use a surrogate mother then I would suggest giving God your troubles and pray for guidance.

This is the episode is part 1 in a study on the Kingdom of God. In the New Testament, one phrase that Jesus ues over and over is the "Kingdom of God". In this study we will look at those versus and see what we can learn about God through them. Matthew 12:22-29Matthew 19:16-26
