With special guest: Simon Jarvis… in conversation with Bill Kable Who says men need help in today’s society? Our guest today would answer by pointing to the shockingly high rate of male suicide with 7 out of 10 victims being male. Yet at a time like this it is hard to gain financial support for male issues because of the focus on other worthy causes. This is where Mentoring Men can make a difference and where Chief Executive Officer Simon Jarvis can build on the work by his predecessor and founder of the movement, Ian Westmoreland, a guest on Dads on the Air in November 2019. Simon tells us that Mentoring Men is not a crisis centre. This is not for men who have gone over the edge in one way or another. The group aims to get in early with men who just need a non-judgemental ear, someone who may have experienced all this before and who might have a few tips to pass on. Podcast (mp3)
MMHS 5/11/24 - In this episode of the Men's Mental Health Show with CEO of Mentoring Men, Filipe Gama eSilva, and men's coach John Milham, we discuss the benefits of men mentoring other men.
In this episode we talk about how the Bible is a means to the end of knowing Jesus more intimately, and we look at one specific practice we can do to approach the Scriptures this way.NET footnote on Psalm 23:6 and the word "follow" (or "pursue"): "The use of רָדַף (radaf, “pursue, chase”) with טוֹב וָחֶסֶד (tov vakhesed, “goodness and faithfulness”) as subject is ironic. This is the only place in the entire OT where either of these nouns appears as the subject of this verb רָדַף (radaf, “pursue”). This verb is often used to describe the hostile actions of enemies. One might expect the psalmist's enemies (see v. 5) to chase him, but ironically God's “goodness and faithfulness” (which are personified and stand by metonymy for God himself) pursue him instead. The word “pursue” is used outside of its normal context in an ironic manner and creates a unique, but pleasant word picture of God's favor (or a kind God) “chasing down” the one whom he loves."Scriptures referenced:Matthew 15:8John 17:3John 6:63Psalm 127:1Psalm 27:8Matthew 11:28Psalm 138:3Psalm 9:1-2Psalm 8:3-4Psalm 1:2-3Psalm 18:28-29Psalm 51:10Psalm 30:11-12Psalm 13:1-6Psalm 10:1Psalm 27:10Psalm 7:1-2Psalm 46:1-3Psalm 147:10-11Psalm 143:7-12Psalm 63:1-4, 8Psalm 139:1-16Psalm 23**CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS**I said the guy who disciples me had me write on the front cover, "I read this book to know Jesus more." In this episode we do a brief overview of Ruth and draw out three truths.Other episodes referenced in this one:Episode 21: "I never knew youEpisode 24: The GospelEpisode 31: "Until I went into the sanctuary of God"Quotes used in this episode:NET footnote from Matthew 22:24: "The brother of a man who died without a son had an obligation to marry his brother's widow. This served several purposes: It provided for the widow in a society where a widow with no children to care for her would be reduced to begging, and it preserved the name of the deceased, who would be regarded as the legal father of the first son produced from that marriage."NET footnote from Ruth 2:3: "The text is written from Ruth's limited perspective. As far as she was concerned, she randomly picked a spot in the field. But God was providentially at work and led her to the portion of the field belonging to Boaz, who, as a near relative of Elimelech, was a potential benefactor.""God is always doing 10,000 things in your life, and you may be aware of three of them" (Pastor John Piper)."This is a BIG message in a SHORT story. It shows how God is constructing his grand story out of the small, seemingly inconsequential stories of everyday people. This little story is intentionally framed at the beginning and end by the larger storyline of the Bible. Ruth shows how God is at work in the day to day activities of average people. All the characters face life's normal challenges (death, moving, lack of financial resources, familial responsibilities, etc.) and find God is weaving a story of redemption out of all the details. The Book of Ruth encourages us to view our day-to-day lives as part of God's bigger plan for our lives and world" (The Bible Project)."The characters talk about God a few times, but the narrator hardly ever mentions God explicitly doing anything in the story. This is its subtle brilliance because God's providence is at work behind every scene, weaving together the lives of the characters" (The Bible Project)."Endurance is faith expressed over time" (Pastor J. D. Greear).Scriptures referenced:Ruth 1:1-5Ruth 1:15-18Ruth 2:1-17Leviticus 19:9-10Leviticus 23:22Deuteronomy 24:19-22Ruth 2:20-23Ruth 3:1-13Deuteronomy 25:5-10Matthew 22:23-33Ruth 3:16-18I WANT TO BE DISCIPLEDI am on staff with another ministry called Mentoring Men for the Master (M3). The other times I read it, I read that part correctly. However, here is the verse: "Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest'? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest."When I said, "Seeking out people; saving people; restoring people to relationship with God; forgiving our sins" I was referring to what Jesus does. I was not implying that we ourselves can save people, restore them to relationship with God, or forgive their sins. Nevertheless, Jesus works through us.I paraphrased John 7:17. Here is the exact quote: "If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority."Support the Show.If you feel so led, you can support the podcast by clicking HERE or by clicking the "Support the show" button above. Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? — Galatians 4:21 CALL OUT: Our newest men's ministry book, Sculpting Men, is now available in paper. Pick this up now if you are leading men. It contains over 50+ articles on the Foundations for Men's Ministry, Mentoring Men, & Practical Steps to Get Started. Why The Law? Laws are crucial. They safeguard and guide individuals and communities. Without laws, chaos would reign, and conflicts would escalate. They provide a necessary structure for life. However, laws can also be misused to enforce conformity, leading to excessive regulation and the stifling of freedoms. The challenge of governance lies in finding the right balance between too few and too many laws. At some point, it is tempting for those who govern to become intoxicated with power by legislation. When they don't get the behaviors they want, they legislate behavior, which is precisely what happened in Scotland overnight. Formerly a country known for its savage and merciless defense against harsh conditions and hostile enemies now has made hate speech a criminal offense that could land someone in prison for up to seven years. Leveraging The Law This was the situation in Galatia. New converts were being persuaded by Jewish Christians that their faith in Jesus was insufficient. They were told they needed to follow additional rites and rituals from the Mosaic Law to be in good standing with God. This was a legal overstep, a power move by religious leaders. You see, laws are good guides until they encounter two critical challenges: they are ignored by adherents or leveraged by authorities. The ultimate reason for the religious law was to point out the sinful nature of our selfish desires. The law, given by God, was supposed to stir us to examine our motivations and actions. It should redirect us toward good and godly guidance from God's Word and be led by the Spirit. Believers who do this have no need for the law. This is not an endorsement of lawlessness but the joy of freedom. Freedom in faith to be led by the power of God's Spirit. Those who the Spirit leads do not need the law because their sin was justified not by the law but by faith. In addition, they are indwelled by a daily guide—the Holy Spirit. This is the joy of being a believer. We are not regulated by the former law and oppressed by it. Instead, we live under the law of grace, as evidenced by how we are sealed and led by the Holy Spirit. Live Free From The Law Given this, how is the Spirit directing your steps today? Are you aware of his presence? Are you listening to him? Are you letting him have total control of your motivations and desires? Here's my prayer for you today as you reflect on these questions: Spirit of the Living God, direct my steps today. Convict me of any selfishness and sin. Direct me to your holiness. Make your desires my desires. Amen. #LawAndGrace #FreedomInFaith #SpiritLedLife #GalatiansInsights #GraceOverLegalism ASK THIS: How does your understanding of the law impact your daily decisions and interactions with others? In what ways can you actively seek to live in the freedom and grace offered through Jesus Christ rather than being bound by legalistic tendencies or expectations? DO THIS: Invite the Spirit to lead you to freedom. PRAY THIS: Spirit of the Living God, direct my steps today. Convict me of any selfishness and sin. Direct me to your holiness. Make your desires my desires. Amen. PLAY THIS: Spirit of the Living God.
My little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you! I wish I could be present with you now and change my tone, for I am perplexed about you. — Galatians 4:19-20 CALL OUT: Our newest men's ministry book, Sculpting Men, is now available in paper. Pick this up now if you are leading men. It contains over 50+ articles on the Foundations for Men's Ministry, Mentoring Men, & Practical Steps to Get Started. The Invested Parent With these words, we encounter raw emotion. Paul perceives himself as a parent to the Galatians. He has parent-like aspirations for their spiritual growth and maturity. He likens this desire for them to the pains of birth, which speaks volumes about the labor and struggle involved in nurturing spiritual growth. This communicates something vital about discipleship and mentorship. It's not a passive endeavor. It requires a deep personal investment that is sometimes agonizing. For some of you who have been too disengaged in discipling those around you, this is a poignant reminder of the gravity of your role. Discipleship is more than imparting knowledge. It's about walking alongside others, sharing in their joys and sorrows, and helping them grow in intimacy with Christ. It's about investing time, energy, and passion into the lives of those we love. It involves both affirmation and admonition, speaking truth in love even when it's uncomfortable or confrontational. It requires discernment and sensitivity to a disciple's needs, knowing when to encourage, when to challenge, and when to comfort. Responsible To Not For But, like Paul, there will come a moment when the process pushes you over the edge. You will eventually scratch your head and contemplate questions like: "Have I wasted my time?" "Am I that bad of a teacher?" "Are they that stupid?" You will have these thoughts and questions. But right at this moment, you need to remember a simple principle: "You are responsible to them, but you are not responsible for them." All you can do is invest as much as possible, show them the truth, and let them decide for themselves. These are the pangs of spiritual birth that often our "children" do not know. #SpiritualParenting #DiscipleshipJourney #MentoringMen #AgonizingLove #InvestingInOthers ASK THIS: How can you deepen your commitment to nurturing spiritual growth in others, embracing the joys and pains of discipleship? Reflect on a time when you felt the tension between responsibility for others' spiritual growth and the realization that, ultimately, their choices are their own. How did you navigate this tension, and what did you learn from the experience? DO THIS: Disciple and invest. PRAY THIS: Lord, grant me the strength and perseverance to invest deeply in the spiritual growth of others, even when it involves agonizing labor and uncertainty. Help me to trust in Your timing and sovereignty as I walk alongside those You have entrusted to my care. Amen. PLAY THIS: Follow Me.
Trigger warning: Mental Health, Suicide Welcome to Episode 108 – Mentoring Men with Simon Jarvis Australia is in a mental health and crisis, and men are struggling big time. But unlike women and children, men have limited options available to them; The health system is female-orientated, and wait lists for mental health support are extending to 6-9 months in some cases. Unfortuantely this pushes many men over the edge, with high rates of reported family and domestic violence and suicide. If we're to change the stats, we need to change our approach. And this is what Mentoring Men is doing – providing a free mentoring service for men Australia wide. It's not about replacing therapists, but about complementing them with boots on the ground support to overcome life's challenges. And joining me to share the Mentoring Men story is CEO Simon Jarvis. Simon shares his journey into Mentoring Men, and the valuable work their mentors do for men in need. He also leaves us with some wonderful insights into his own fatherhood journey, including his love for everyone's favourite TV show, Bluey. In this episode, Simon shares: His journey into the mental health field His realisation that men need more support The services Mentoring Men provide How we need to evolve support provided to men A Mentoring Men success story The mentor/mentoree process Key Quotes: "It is hard to open up. And it is hard to even just go to a GP or go to a doctor and ask.” "Providing that opportunity to use language men resonate with really gives us a better insight into what's going on.” "Our mentors get out of it as much as our mentees." This episode, originally aired in March, was by far one of our most popular. Brad and Chris, two therapists with Fresh Roots Counseling, talk about, as a man, what it means to BE a mentor and also what it means to BE mentored. Male or female...it is a great listen.(Intro music by Music by Joystock - https://www.joystock.org)
In this episode Shannan has a in-depth conversation with Ian as he describes how what he read the morning of September 10, 2013 transformed his way of thinking and looking at the world. It was at that specific moment of silence that lead him to quiet his job and be of service to others full-time May 14, 2014. Ian shares his amazing journey and how he has changed many lives to this day and continues to on a daily basis. Ian's Information: Ian Westmoreland is the founder of the not-for-profit organisations Mentoring Men and Kintsugi Heroes. A life-changing moment in September 2013 would alter the course of Ian's life. It would see him leave a lucrative, 42-year IT career to devote himself entirely to volunteer work. By sharing his inspirational story, Ian demonstrates how removing the many masks we wear for others allows us to reveal our authentic selves, improve relationships, meet new people, and reclaim control of our lives. Engage Ian to speak at your event if you want attendees to: ● Be inspired ● Discover their true purpose ● Get moving and embrace change ● Transform lives to make the world a better place Ian spent 42 years working in the Australian and New Zealand telecommunications and energy industries mainly as an IT project manager. On 10 September 2013 he experienced a life changing moment so profound, it would lead him to give up paid work in May 2014 to commence a full-time volunteer career. It was during his work as a volunteer for not-for-profit youth programs such as the Raise Foundation, Kidshope and COACH, Ian noticed a gap in comparable services for mature adults. However, it wasn't until his own moment of challenge that he realised just how urgently these services were needed, especially for men, a demographic that has historically struggled with vulnerability and asking for support. In response he developed the Mentoring Men program in June 2018 and it was officially launched as a registered charity by Julian Leeser, Federal Member for Berowra in November 2018. In just three years, Mentoring Men grew to become an Australia-wide, free mentoring service to support men. With the Mentoring Men organisation now independently up and running, in December 2022 Ian launched another “passion project” called Kintsugi Heroes. Complementing his previous volunteer work, Kintsugi Heroes aims to show how those major moments of challenge we face can change the course of our life, making it even more beautiful and fulfilling than ever before. Kintsugi Heroes is a weekly podcast of inspirational interviews with people who have discovered beauty, despite the incredible adversities they have faced. It's a no-holds-barred approach that doesn't sugar-coat the difficult road to a life of fulfilment and hope. One of the first podcasts published was Professor Gregory Smith's inspiring story. Ian's story has been covered on national TV, has been referred to in both Federal and NSW State Parliaments, and included in the Moments in Time book as well as numerous podcasts, newspapers, and radio shows. Ian and the charity organisations he established have won numerous awards including: • NSW Volunteer of the year award 2016 • NSW Volunteer of the year award 2020 – Individual and Mentoring Men State Finalist • AMHF Men's Health Awards 2020 – NSW Men's Health Award Ian has been married to Helen for 40 years and they have 4 children and 12 grandchildren. Discussion of our guests passion projects and how they are making an impact About Ian Westmoreland - Founder, Mentoring Men & Kintsugi Heroes After spending 42 years working in the Australian and New Zealand telecommunications and energy industries mainly as an IT project manager, Ian Westmorland left it all behind to pursue a life of volunteer work. Initially, he spent time volunteering with the Raise Foundation, Kidshope, and COACH mentoring programs. Until 2018 when he began searching for an organization that provided free long-term one to one “life” mentoring to Australian men. Not finding a suitable program to be in existence, he began the development of the Mentoring Men program in June 2018 and the program was officially launched by Julian Leeser, Federal Member for Berowra in November 2018. In addition to Mentoring Men, he has established another “passion project” called Kintsugi Heroes which provides uplifting and inspirational content to people who are experiencing or at risk of experiencing significant life challenges. Ian has been married to his lovely wife Helen for 40 years, they have 4 children and 12 grandchildren together. In this episode I met with a person who has spent his adult life actively pursuing his purpose. He's an entrepreneur, grandfather, mentor and much more. Our conversation brought out some of his greatest challenges and lessons so far, and highlighted the gifts along the way.He is a person who demonstrates how to live on purpose each and every day. I present to you, Ian Westmoreland. Here's a summary of what we discussed:05:00 - the beginning of the journey09:02 - the pull for more meaning in his work09:30 - the MAGIC moment of clarity20:26 - the motivation behind the first entrepreneurial venture22:15 - we all have a purpose 30:02 - the village connectionand much more…Here's some information about our guest:Ian Westmoreland, Founder of Mentoring Men and Kintsugi HeroesOn 10 September 2013 I experienced a life changing moment that led to a decision to retire from paid work in May 2014 and commence a volunteer mentoring career.I initially volunteered with the Raise Foundation, Kidshope and COACH mentoring programs and then in 2018 after experiencing a life challenge I searched for an organisation that provided free long-term one to one “life” mentoring to Australian men.I was surprised and disappointed to find that no suitable program existed especially for a demographic that historically struggles with vulnerability and who would benefit from having someone support them in their life journey. In response I commenced development of the Mentoring Men program in June 2018 and the program was officially launched by Julian Leeser, Federal Member for Berowra in November 2018.I am currently establishing Kintsugi Heroes with a purpose of “uncovering our hidden value” and it will provide uplifting and inspirational content to people who are experiencing or at risk of experiencing significant life challenges. The podcast launch will be late 2022 and the first Kindle and printed book are expected to be published in Q1 2023.Something Interesting About YouI used to import squash & tennis racketsI ran a milk barI have 12 grandkidsI won a gold medal playing tennis in the World Masters GamesI broke my collarbone twiceWhat Are You Famous For?I was on the front page of the Australian Newspaper in the 1960s for pretending to play a didgeridoo in the Dandenong Town HallI was interviewed live on Sky News a couple of years ago - https://www.skynews.com.au/australia-news/mentoring-men-organisation-aims-to-help-australian-men-with-mental-health-issues/video/f364084f0dc40de127ac9bfa5baceacbContact:https://www.linkedin.com/in/ian-westmoreland-mentor-menshealth/https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100005089007984Check out our previous episode here. The purpose of the 6 Star Business is to help businesses find more meaning, purpose and profits in their endeavours. Our volunteer Mentors provide vital support for men which in turn creates stronger, healthier families and communities. Why only MEN? In short, men represent 75% of all suicides in Australia and yet most suicide prevention support services are more effective at reaching women not men. Are you looking for a mentor? Are you interested in mentoring someone? What is mentorship? On today's episode, Jordan and Andrew discuss all things mentorship, including the importance of mentoring and how it has shaped them into the men they have become. Mentorship is more than just influence. It's more than teaching someone something. There is an element of transferring information, however, mentorship is more than that. It is about life change. What we are really talking about here is discipleship. As Christians, this means giving a part of yourself to someone else in a Christ-centered way that leads that person to be more like Jesus. It is allowing someone else to observe and see how you do your Christian life. There is a huge need among young men who desire mentorship but have not gotten connected with an older mature man in the faith. Where are the men willing to help shape the next generation? For those who desire to be a mentor here are 4 tips to get you started: Learn how to ask good questions Have a plan and don't be afraid to revisit it as needed Be honest with yourself and have reasonable expectations Do something together, live life together For those who are looking for a mentor, here are 4 tips for you: Respect the mentor's time Have a specific goal for mentorship Take the initiative and approach potential mentors Find different mentors for different things It doesn't have to be complicated. If you desire to have a mentor, take a step in faith, pray and ask the Lord to bring someone into your life to receive mentorship from. Have courage and start a conversation with the person you want to be mentored by. Older men, make yourself available. Your experience and time are valuable to the younger men in your life.
