By faith, with Sarah's involvement, he received power of procreation, even though he was too old, because he considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore, from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, “as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore” (Hebrews 11:11-12). The Heidelberg Catechism defines true faith as “not only a knowledge and conviction that everything God reveals in his Word is true; it is also a deep-rooted assurance, created in me by the Holy Spirit through the gospel, that, out of sheer grace earned for us by Christ, not only others, but I too, have had my sins forgiven, have been made forever right with God, and have been granted salvation” (A 21). The author of Hebrews would probably not disagree with this definition. However, I suggest, recognizing that I am skating on thin ice, that according to Hebrews 11, more should be added to this confessional definition. Hebrews 11 faith often involves a physical response to God. It involves action taken in response to the unseen God and his promises. Faith is not merely static belief or cognitive assent. It spurs us to act in accordance with God's truth. There is a boldness to faith that caused Noah to build an Ark, Abraham to leave home and Moses' parents to hide their son. This courage is rooted in the faith that, in the end, God will come through; he will keep his promises. The folks mentioned here stepped forward with eyebrow-raising tenacity and confidence. There was no perceptible reason for doing so, except that God had spoken. God revealed himself, and that was reason enough to act. Their faith caused them to behave in certain ways, in ways expectant of promises fulfilled. Along with the promise of a new homeland, God promised Abraham children. Well, there was only one thing to do with that promise. But this promise tested Abraham's faith severally. He got very old, and so did Sarah; well beyond childbearing age. God continued to promise, and Abraham kept working on his faith. Finally, he was enabled to become a father because he believed God. Abraham, an old man, and Sarah, his wife, as good as dead, became parents, trusting in the faithfulness of God. We are challenged to take our eyes off the obvious—in this case the inability of old people to become pregnant—and to focus on the faithful God who keeps his promises. There is more hidden in this promise. The number of Abraham and Sarah's descendants would continue to expand until their children included not just those of their blood line, but all those with their kind of faith. Paul said it best, “Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham” (Galatians 3:7). As the Catechism put it, true faith “is also a deep-rooted assurance, created in me by the Holy Spirit through the gospel, that, out of sheer grace earned for us by Christ, not only others, but I too, have had my sins forgiven, have been made forever right with God, and have been granted salvation.” All those with this faith are children of Abraham and recipients of the promises God made to him. The question remains, how will that faith effect the way that we live? As you journey on, go with the blessing of God: May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you: wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the wilderness: protect you through the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing; at the wonders he has shown you. May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.

It is human nature to constantly draw comparisons between “us” and “them.”  This is particularly evident in the “game” of politics.  Paul, as he starts to draw his 2nd letter to the Corinthians to a conclusion, expresses concern about certain influences upon them which were not spiritually healthy. He writes, “the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have power to destroy strongholds” [10 v.4] The weapons Paul is interested in, because they are vital as affecting our ‘eternity',  are not physical weapons; they are those which destroy the “strongholds” of wrong thinking. Paul next states, “We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ. …” [v.5] It is the words of Christ and the words his apostles were inspired to say and write which “destroy arguments” founded on human reasoning, which are even more dangerous when they are expressed as a “lofty opinion” seeming to be an extension of God's revealed word. Paul writes of “our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up …” [v.8], but he is concerned about  “those who are commending themselves.  But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another they are without understanding.” [v.12]  Real understanding and genuine faith will only increase when it is built up on a true “knowledge of God”[v.5] as found in his revealed word.  Paul says, “I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.  For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough” [11 v.3,4]. It is those who “measure themselves by one another” instead of the word of God that distort the nature and message of Jesus Christ.  The end result, as history shows, has been to portray Jesus as equal to God himself and to create a “different gospel” rather that the gospel that was first preached to Abraham (Galatians 3 v.7-9).  May we, through our constant reading and reflection on the words of Scripture learn to fully measure ourselves, our beliefs and hopes, by the actual words that God has inspired and that have been preserved to our day.

If you know someone has done something to help you or someone else then you understand that is in their heart, it's a part of who they are and what they will do!The first mention of the Lord's healing power is found in the beginning, the book of Genesis, when He answered Abraham's prayer and healed Abimelech's household. Abraham is the father of faith and we are now children of Abraham (Galatians 3:7), so we should expect to pray for those who need healing and God hears us!*Read Genesis 20:17-18 (KJV) So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children. [18] For the Lord had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife. Many years later when Abraham's descendants became a nation, God promised to remove sickness from their midst if they served Him! They were servants, but we now are sons and daughters of the Most High God: *Read Exodus 23:25 (KJV) And ye shall serve the Lord your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.*Read 2 Corinthians 6:17-18 (KJV) Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing ; and I will receive you, [18] And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.Salvation is one thing of the spirit but then there is Healing! Healing can be physical or emotional! The Prophet Jeremiah addressed it:*Jeremiah 17:14 (KJV) Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.Notice the “Heart of the HEALER”:*Read Matthew 4:17-25 (KJV) From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. [19] And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. [20] And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. [21] And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. [22] And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him. [23] And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. [24] And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. Just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”? Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. — Galatians 3:6-9 CALL OUT: Call out to Mike Gole from Broken Arrow, OK, who joined us for leadership training in Florida. Thanks for sharing our devotionals with your men daily. Paul presents an airtight case for salvation by faith alone by referring to the Jewish icon of faith, Father Abraham. In this section, he will explain to the Galatians how Abraham (like them) was saved only by faith, not by circumcision, and that the covenant made to Abraham was a blessing for all nations, including Gentiles. Today, this compels me to address the issue of proof-texting head-on. Proof-texting is a method of interpreting Scripture that selects specific lines of Scripture, or "proof texts," that appear to support a particular belief or doctrine without considering the broader context of the passage. Thus, in Paul's correction, we can see this is precisely what the Judaizers were doing. This approach led Jewish believers to a biased interpretation of Scripture, which ignored some pretty apparent truths about Abraham, faith, and the blessing to all nations, which included the Gentiles. It also resulted in false teaching, a wrong understanding of the gospel, and wounded and confused believers who questioned their salvation. But note that memorizing, quoting, and referencing individual Scriptures is fine. Just remember that in context, verses like Philippians 4:13, which reads, "I can do all things through him who strengthens me," might have nothing to do with my striving to achieve the next stage of my potential. Instead, it might communicate that I need to learn to be content with my present discontentment and discover God's strength through my suffering. If you don't believe me, take a glance at the two preceding verses: "Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need." — Philippians 4:11-12.  Hopefully, you see how easy it is to misread the text by proof-texting and thus communicate a Gospel truth that is not a Gospel truth at all. So be cautious of what you believe and how you communicate it, as well as how you communicate what you believe. #FaithAlone #GalatiansInsights #ContextMatters #SalvationByFaith #AvoidProofTexting ASK THIS: How can we ensure that our interpretation of Scripture is rooted in its broader context rather than relying solely on proof-texting? In what ways can we apply the principle of seeking God's strength amidst our present circumstances, as highlighted in Philippians 4:11-13, to our daily lives? DO THIS: Read Scripture in context don't proof-text. PRAY THIS: Father, help me to approach Your Word with humility and discernment, seeking to understand its full context and applying its truths to my life with wisdom and clarity. Grant me the strength to trust in You alone for salvation and to rely on Your power in every circumstance I face. Amen. PLAY THIS: Your Name Is Holy.

There are 2 Stages of receiving the Holy Spirit: (1) When we receive Christ, we are baptised into Him, born again, and receive the Spirit of God WITHIN, for our own personal blessing, holiness and life with God. (2) There is a subsequent experience of the Spirit after salvation, called the Baptism in the Spirit, when we receive the Spirit UPON, for the purpose of empowering us to witness to Christ and for ministry. The PROMISE of the SPIRIT is also called the BLESSING of ABRAHAM (Galatians 3:14), which is a 2-fold BLESSING (Genesis 12:2). Jesus is the prime example of this 2-stage Blessing of the Spirit: (1) He had the Spirit WITHIN from birth, and by the indwelling Spirit, He lived a perfect holy life to God as a man, but (2) He was not empowered for supernatural ministry until He received the Spirit UPON, at His Baptism. The BAPTISM in the SPIRIT is when we are clothed with POWER, by receiving the SPIRIT UPON, enabling us to witness and fulfil our ministry. Jesus' Baptism in the Spirit is the BLUEPRINT for ours (John 1:33). He already had the Spirit WITHIN from birth, but still needed to receive the Spirit UPON, to clothe Him with power for ministry. Likewise, we have the Spirit WITHIN, from our New Birth, but still need to receive the Spirit UPON, to clothe and anoint us with power to fulfil the Great Commission. He confirmed when God's SPIRIT came UPON Him, He was ANOINTED with God's POWER to minister (Luke 4:17-21). He described His Baptism in the Spirit as the Spirit coming UPON and ANOINTING Him to preach, heal and set the captives free. He also said that once the Spirit came upon Him, He rested and remained on Him, and so God's power was present on Him to heal them. Isaiah prophesied about the Messiah (Anointed One) in 11:1-3, 42:1, 61:1-3. In the Old Testament, nobody was BORN AGAIN or had the SPIRIT WITHIN, as this was only made available in the New Covenant. Although certain prophets, priests and kings were anointed with the SPIRIT UPON, this was not necessarily permanent, nor for all believers. But in the New Covenant, the SPIRIT UPON is available to all believers (John 7:38-39, Acts 2:16-18), and is permanent. Jesus described these 2 ministries of the Spirit WITHIN and UPON in His TEACHING. (1) He described the SPIRIT WITHIN us, as an everlasting FOUNTAIN of living water (John 4:10-14). (2) Later in John 7:37-39, He described the SPIRIT flowing out of us as RIVERS of living water, making us channels of blessing to others (v38). In Luke 11:9-13, He taught God will give His born again children more of the Holy Spirit if they ask Him (it's not automatic). In the Gospels, He primarily prepared His disciples to receive the New Birth and the Spirit WITHIN. He taught about the New Birth of our spirit by the Spirit in John 3:3-9,16. Then in John 14:16-17, He introduced the Spirit as another Helper like Himself. This means He is like Jesus, (1) a PERSON, not a force, and (2) GOD. He is a Divine Person, given to us. He also said in the New Birth the Spirit will INDWELL us forever: “He will be WITHIN YOU.” So He taught in the New Covenant the Spirit will indwell all believers forever. He explained the connection between the NEW BIRTH and the SPIRIT WITHIN in Mark 2:22. First, God must make our wineskin (spirit) new, and then He can put the NEW WINE of His SPIRIT WITHIN us. Old wineskins were renewed by rubbing them with oil. Likewise in the New Birth, our old spirits were made new and holy by the application of the OIL of the SPIRIT, making them able to receive the NEW WINE of the SPIRIT WITHIN. Then after they received His Spirit within on the day of His resurrection, during the 40 days He prepared them to receive the SPIRIT UPON, which they did at Pentecost (Acts 2). On the morning Jesus rose from the dead, He ascended to Heaven, before returning to earth and appearing to His disciples for the next 40 days, before His final Ascension (John 20:16-17). The 4 Purposes for His first Ascension: (1) To fulfil the Feast of First Fruits on the day of His resurrection (1Corinthians 15:20-23). The First Fruits of the harvest must be offered up and waved before God, to be accepted by God on behalf of the whole harvest (Leviticus 23:10-11). Therefore, He had to ascend to Heaven and appear before God to offer Himself as the First Fruits, to be accepted on our behalf. (2) To present His Blood in Heaven (Hebrews 9:12). Thus, it was not appropriate for Mary to touch Him before He made these holy offerings to God. But after He came back from Heaven, He allowed other women and His disciples to touch Him (Matthew 28:9, Luke 24:39, John 20:27). (3) To receive all authority in Heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18, Philippians 2:9-11, Daniel 7:13-14). (4) To receive the Holy Spirit on our behalf, in order to pour Him out (Acts 2:33). He must have received the Spirit from the Father on the resurrection morning, as already that evening, He imparted the Spirit to His disciples (John 20:22).

I ask, “Whatever happened to that Iraqi refugee”, and the youth tell me he got so fired up he brought 14 more people back, Iraqi refugees; who got saved and filled with the Holy Spirit and then they all received asylum in Sweden. every one of us has a story, testimony, even if your testimony is that God kept you to never get involved with any of the junk... From Dutch Sheets “Give Him 15” After teaching on the power of history recently, I was asked by a Messianic Jewish rabbi if I knew the meaning of the Hebrew word for “testimony”. We Hebrews believe,” he continued, “that when you share about what God did in the past, it releases the same power into the present... In other words, power is released to ‘do it again.'” ‘Gift of an Evangelist' A "publisher of glad tidings;" a missionary preacher of the gospel (Ephesians 4:11). This title is applied to Philip (Acts 21:8), who appears to have gone from city to city preaching the word (8:4, 40). Judging from the case of Philip, evangelists had neither the authority of an apostle, nor the gift of prophecy, nor the responsibility of pastoral supervision over a portion of the flock. They were itinerant preachers, having it as their special function to carry the gospel to places where it was previously unknown. The writers of the four Gospels are known as the Evangelists. This is a form of the word ordinarily translated "gospel" (euaggelion), except that here it designates one who announces that gospel to others (euaggelistes, "a bringer of good tidings"), literally, God Himself is an evangelist, for He "preached the gospel beforehand unto Abraham" (Galatians 3:8); Jesus Christ was an evangelist, for He also "preached the gospel" (Luke 20:1); Paul was an evangelist as well as an apostle (Romans 1:15); Philip the deacon was an evangelist (Acts 21:8); and Timothy, the pastor (2 Timothy 4:5); and indeed all the early disciples who, on being driven out of Jerusalem, "went everywhere preaching the word" (Acts 8:4 the King James Version). But Ephesians 4:11 teaches that one particular order of the ministry, distinguished from every other, is singled out by the Head of the church for this work in a distinctive sense. All may possess the gift of an evangelist in a measure, and be obligated to exercise its privilege and duty, but some are specially endued with it. "He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers." It will be seen that as an order in the ministry, the evangelist precedes that of the pastor and teacher, a fact which harmonizes with the character of the work each is still recognized as doing. The evangelist has no fixed place of residence, but moves about in different localities, preaching the gospel to those ignorant of it before. As these are converted and united to Jesus Christ by faith, the work of the pastor and teacher begins, to instruct them further in the things of Christ and build them up in the faith. At a later time, the name of "evangelist" was given the writers of the four Gospels because they tell the story of the gospel and because the effect of their promulgation at the beginning was very much like the work of the preaching evangelist. In character, the Gospels bear something of the same relation to the Epistles as evangelists bear to pastors and teachers.

Today's Reading: Deuteronomy 10:12-21Daily Lectionary: Deuteronomy 15:19-16:22; Matthew 13:44-58“Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stubborn.” (Deuteronomy 10:16)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. God commanded the sons of Abraham to get circumcised. Circumcision was a sign attached to the covenant promise that God would bless the offspring of Abraham and also bless the nations through Abraham's offspring. The Law told Israel, “If you, the offspring of Abraham, wish to receive God's blessing and pass it along to the nations, you must obey my statutes.” Of course, genuine obedience is not merely external. Genuine obedience begins in the heart. It includes fearing God and loving Him (Deuteronomy 10:12), as well as loving your neighbor (Deuteronomy 10:19). So, Moses calls the Israelites to deal with their sinful hearts. “Don't merely cut off your foreskin. Cut off the stubborn attitude that clings to your heart!” Here circumcision is a metaphor for repentance. Cut off the Old Adam and let him die!Moses admits that they won't circumcise their hearts, and so the Law must curse them (Deuteronomy 28:15-29:29). Then, Moses predicts that God would have compassion on them. He will circumcise the hearts of His people, so that they truly love Him and obey Him gladly (Deuteronomy 30:1-6).In His mercy, God sent Jesus, the true Offspring of Abraham (Galatians 3:16). He obeyed the Law with a pure heart. He had no need to cut away sin from His heart, because there was no sin found there. Nevertheless, He was cut off and left to die on the cross. Why? He suffered the curse of the Law in our place, so that we disobedient sinners can live forever. Then, the risen Christ sent His Spirit. The Holy Spirit comes to us through the Gospel and He enters our hearts. He circumcises our hearts. He causes us to repent of our sins and love the One who loved us first. Indeed, Paul says that we were circumcised in Holy Baptism, where the Old Adam was put to death, so that we might rise with Christ (Colossians. 2:11-15). Since you were baptized and have heard the Gospel, the Spirit has circumcised your heart. Therefore, you love the Lord and your neighbor, albeit imperfectly, until the Day of Resurrection when sin is cut away and removed entirely. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Almighty God, You gave Your only-begotten Son to take our nature upon Himself. Grant that we, Your adopted children by grace, may daily be renewed by Your Holy Spirit; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. After showing that salvation by works contradicts the finished work of the Cross (v1), as well as the Galatians' own experience (v2-5), Paul then also proves from the life of father Abraham that salvation must be by faith, and not works. Paul points out that God preached the Gospel to Abraham, declaring that through the coming Messiah (Abraham's seed), all the nations (gentiles) would be justified and blessed with salvation by faith (Genesis 12:3). This promise of salvation was based on God's grace through the Messiah, not on works. Moreover, Abraham himself was justified by faith in Genesis 15: “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness” (v6). So those who are justified by faith are the spiritual sons of Abraham. Thus salvation by works contradicts God's revelation through Abraham. However, Genesis 15 seems to imply that Abraham was justified by faith through believing that God would give him many children, but saving faith involves faith in the Messiah. We consider the amazing possibility, that God put the Gospel (the Message of the Messiah) in the stars, so that when God showed him the stars, He was preaching the Gospel to Abraham, with the conclusion: "So shall your Seed (the Messiah) be" (v5). Thus Abraham was justified through His faith in the Messiah, just as we are. We look at other Scriptures that support this idea, and point out that astrology is the devil's counterfeit of this original Divine Revelation. Once man possessed the written Word of God, the Gospel story in the Heavens was no longer necessary, and so faded out of use.

These promises take faith, faith in Christ and faith that God will fulfill them. As Christians, we can embrace these promises as our own, that God will extend, expand and build on the promises of Abraham to include the world, and all the Gentile nations.

# Introduction Regardless of what anyone tells you, doubt doesn't make you cool. We doubt because it makes us think that we know better, because we think it'll help us save face when the thing, whatever it was, turns out not to be true. "Hey, at least I wasn't gullible like those twits.” Christians should be more comfortable looking crazy. We should boast more in the things we can't see. We are _believers_, and if you can see it, then you don't need faith. If you don't need faith, then you can't glorify or please God. He delights to make promises to His people and then making their faith like gold. So, yeah, we don't believe everything anyone says, but we do believe everything God's Word says. The world is full of liars, but Scripture doesn't make a virtue of skepticism, and actually condemns the double-minded. The righteous live by faith, we are born again to a living hope, and that means we live on unseen things. This is how we are saved, this is what we are saved unto: faith and hope. Doubt siphons of strength. Doubt divides attention. Doubt hamstrings our walk in obedience. Disobedience may cause doubt, but doubt also leads to disobedience. The Word calls for and builds up faith. Abraham is the man of faith, he is the father of all those with faith. In this last part of Romans 4 Paul puts a bow on the story of Abraham's belief and asserts that it applies to all believers. # Abraham's Faith in the One Who Promised Offspring (verses 18-22) Verses 18-21 are one sentence, with a follow up conclusion sentence in verse 22. Having already taught that it was Abraham's faith that saved him, not his works or circumcision or connection to the law, Paul tells a little more of Abraham's story. ## Considered Faith (verses 18-19) The first part Paul points out are the two reasonably incompatible facts on the ground: 1) the word of the Lord said Abraham would be a father and 2) there was no human way he could be a father. > Who, that is [Abraham], against hope in hope believed that he would become the father of many nations according to the word said, "So will be your offspring," and not wavering in faith he considered his own body already having been put to death, being about one-hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah's womb, (verses 18-19) The two prepositional phrases are right next to each other and they start the sentence: **against hope in hope**. That Abraham believed _against_ hope means that there was no good reason to hope; the wind was against him and he had no ground to stand on. Becoming a father at this point in his life was as hopeless as telling a mountain to move. Yet he'd been told that even his name wasn't sufficient for what was supposed to happen. Abram, meaning "exalted father," was too little. Abraham means "father of a multitude" (Genesis 17:5). Paul quotes "So will be your offspring" which requires the context. > And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” (‭‭Genesis‬ ‭15:5‬, ‭ESV‬‬) The object of his belief wasn't hope, hope was the way he believed. He believed bullishly, confidently. Abraham did not believe blindly. He saw the problems with his situation. He **considered**, he measured in his mind, that his body was basically dead, at least in reproductive terms. He was century-level impotent, past the point of help from mail-order drugs. And Sarah's womb was barren; Paul uses a word for **deadness** and says she had "deadness of womb." But his consideration was **without weakening in faith**. His faith wasn't giving way. > except faith flies upward on celestial wings, so as to look down on all the perceptions of the flesh as on things far below, it will stick fast in the mud of the world. (John Calvin) ## Convinced Faith (verses 20-21) Verses 20-21 state what didn't happen and what did happen and what resulted from that happening. > but unto the promise of God he was not wavered in faith but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God and being fully convinced that He who promised is able also to do (it). In verse 18 "believed" is active and in verse 19 "considered" is active. Abraham acted. In verse 20 **was not wavered** is passive and in verse 21 **was strengthened** is also passive meaning that Abraham was acted upon. Stated one way, his faith was kept from wavering. The word **waver** has the idea of being divided, of being split apart. His faith wasn't being reduced to a fraction. Stated another way, his faith was **strengthened**. So, not weak but strong, not wavering but steady, like wind rather than rain to a fire. The result of faith is that he was **giving glory to God**. The verb, "glorifying" isn't a separate thing in addition to the being strengthened in faith, it is a result of the strong faith. God is glorified when we depend on Him. This belongs first with justification by faith alone, which Paul is still explaining in Romans 4. It also belongs with living by faith. The Lord is not impressed by us, He desires to impress us, so to speak, when we acknowledge that we need Him, and then when we give Him thanks after He's given what we need. This is the message of Psalm 50: call on Him in the day of trouble. God isn't impressed because we doubt Him better, or if we work to keep ourselves never needing His help. There was a filling up of Abraham's thinking with the power of the Promiser: **being fully convinced that the one who promised is able to do (whatever He promised).** Abraham did laugh (Genesis 17:17), and even asked that Ishmael might be the one, and yet the ## Counted Faith (verse 22) This is the conclusion; we're back to where it all started, since Paul quoted the same thing in verse 3 and referred to it again in verse 9. > Therefore, it [faith] was counted to him unto righteousness. Abraham believed God and God's Word to him. Justification is the word for this imputed righteousness, righteousness credited or **counted** by God to Abraham's ledger. # Our Faith in the One Who Raised Jesus (verses 23-25) From the beginning of the chapter Paul has been pushing Abraham's story as _the_ example, and here at the end of the chapter Paul leaves no doubt as to its relevance. > But this was written not only for him, that "it was counted to him," but also for us, those who will be counted, **Counted**, credited, counted. It's now the fourth time that Paul has quoted this statement from Genesis 15:6. We could call it the _proto-iusto_, the first justification. The Scripture revealed it for every son of Abraham in Israel, which was instruction for them that they missed. And as Paul regularly affirms, the Old Testament is profitable for us. It _applies_ The "us" of application are identified: > the ones believing in the one who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered over on account of our trespasses and who was raised on account of our justification. Abraham looked forward, by faith in hope, to the promise to be fulfilled, and we look backward and forward, to the Person of Jesus and to our inheritance in Him. **The one who raised...Jesus** is not Jesus, but the Father. God who promised seed to Abraham (Galatians 3:16) is God who raised _the_ Seed. We do not share the exact same words of promise, but we do share the exact same God of the words and promises. The last verse has a parallel structure that modifies **Jesus our Lord**. Jesus **was delivered**, handed over to the Romans who beat and crucified Him, and this was **because of our sins**. Jesus was also **raised**, brought to life on the third day, **for our justification**. His death was because of our sin. He was without sin. He died because we deserved to die. More than the Jews and Romans, the Father delivered Him up for us (Romans 8:32, see also Isaiah 53:10). He was "pierced for our transgressions" (Isaiah 53). "For our sake He (the Father) made Him (Jesus) to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him (Jesus) we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:21). It is substitution, the righteous for the unrighteous (1 Peter 3:18). His resurrection guarantees our justification. As with the delivering, so with the raising, the Father did it (Romans 6:4; Ephesians 1:19-20). There are other verses that say we are justified by His death, by His blood (Romans 5:9, see also Romans 3:24-26). But this distinction is part of the "all are yours" of ways to talk about our salvation. We should run out of ways to refer to it just as soon as a woman runs out of ways to prepare meat. His resurrection means that He is alive, it confirms that the Father accepted His sacrifice, and it means that our hope is not in this life only (1 Corinthians 15:19). We shall be made alive in Him as well. # Conclusion What around you feeds your faith, fills your hope? Corruption, death, disappointments, sins, doubts. Look to the Father through the Son. Christ in You is the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27). Forgiveness, riches of kindness and patience, life. So get to the Word, get ahold of the promises. Pray for grace to strengthen your faith that it wouldn't waver. Wavering isn't worship. His goal is to bring our doubt to an end, by eventually bringing our faith to an end. --- ## Charge Thomas Watson wrote, “If the sinews be cut, the body is lame; if the sinew of faith be cut, hope is lame.” Don't play with the knife of cynicism. When the evil one flings his flaming darts of doubt in your direction — and do you think he won't? — take up the shield of faith (Ephesians 6:16). ## Benediction > May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. (Romans 15:13, ESV)

Faithful & Just. With all things being relational!

Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham (Galatians 3:6-7 KJV). We love you family. Stay blessed!

Abraham. The father of faith is a well know figure. Much has been written about the man that God made the nation Israel. Nation as in the chosen people of God. What isn't talked about is the attack against him. Who could do such a thing? The Judiazers of course. In this podcast, we get to travel back in time to learn about the father of faith. His roots and decision to follow God is pivotal to our faith. I pray you take a listen to this important podcast. Love you, Erick

People are quick to believe lies.----O foolish Galatians - who has bewitched you-- This was the question that Paul had. He wanted to know who had misled them. And then he reminded them of the truth, using Abraham as an example. Click to listen to this study of Galatians 3.

https://youtu.be/QEuhrpbfER8 Matt 2:13-15Everybody wants to belong. People that say they don't typically have just been rejected and are being self preservating. We were made to be in community. We were made to belong 1 Corinthians 12:27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.Ephesians 4:16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.Colossians 1:18  And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.Today we are talking little nugget of scripture today-  a prophecy- but has deep meaningI've been a part of a lot of things- sports teams, army, but the most important thing to me is the church. Nothing more cosmically important than being a member of a local churchWhen I was a kid- at nordstroms- trying to share gospel with old man- he says- nothing matters more to me than my churchAt the time I thought- why didn't you say Jesus? He's most important- but Church is his body. And from this scripture- we see- the Church is the nation of God- an Israel. Matthew continues to draw to prophecyMatthew, more than any gospel writer, wants to show that Jesus' birth, life, and death, are rooted firmly in the Old Testament.Jesus was born of a virgin (fulfilling Isaiah 7:14). He was born in Bethlehem (fulfilling Micah 5:1-2). He was sought out to be killed by Herod (fulfilling Jeremiah 31:15). He was preceded by John preparing the way (fulfilling Isaiah 40:3). He healed diseases (fulfilling Isaiah 53:4). He spoke through parables (fulfilling Psalm 78:2). He came to Jerusalem riding on a donkey (fulfilling Zechariah 9:9).Therefore- His using and quoting of Hosea 11 is more than just a simple reference to EgyptThis is an important distinction and understanding of scripture that will help us robustly understand the meaning of “out of Egypt I called my son” Jesus is Israel and God's sonRemember- Matthew is speaking to Jewish audience- Chapter one starts with the genealogy of Jesus. The very first words, in Greek, are “biblos geneseos Iesou Christou”– The book of the Genesis of JesusSame parallel to Genesis being the beginning of Gods work on this earth with IsraelJesus is the new Exodus- Jewish people celebrate Passover- remembering the exodus of IsraelSoon after his birth he Goes back into Israel to “come out of Egypt” in the same was as IsraelRight after the exodus Jesus is baptized in the same way that Israel was baptized in the Red Sea after their exodus  1 cor 10:1-5 READ (Drawing OT and NT together) Israel comes through Red Sea Baptism, 40 years in desert, after Jesus baptism 40 days in desertWhich brings us to the Hosea 11 passage READ Hosea 11:1-4God's redemptive plan began soon after Adam and Eve's failure- Promises to Abraham in Genesis, Isaac, Jacob. David etc. God will redeem. There will be a king. Israel will reign. This idea is rooted in son-ship offspring- Chosen people and nation of Israel connectednessFrom the beginning- God had a redemptive plan that would be executed through Jesus- because Israel was not sinless, they could never be the perfect means by which God could eradicate sin- it was inevitable that a Savior would come- to Save from sin and deathJesus is the seed of Abraham- Galatians 3:16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ. But God would call a Israel a “son” Exodus 422 Then you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Israel is My son, My firstborn. 23 So I say to you, let My son go that he may serve Me. But if you refuse to let him go, indeed I will kill your son, your firstborn.” ' ”“Israel is my Son”  is directly connected to Hosea 11:1“When Israel was a child, I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son.
