Your personal testimony is powerful evidence that Jesus is alive and still transforming lives today. In this encouraging devotional, Whitney Hopler reflects on 1 Corinthians 15:6 and the 500 witnesses who saw the resurrected Jesus—reminding believers that authentic faith stories still matter. Christians don’t need to be theologians or pastors to share the Gospel; they simply need to honestly share how Jesus has worked in their lives. Through relatable storytelling and biblical encouragement, this devotional challenges believers to overcome fear, embrace authenticity, and confidently witness to others about God’s faithfulness. Whether through answered prayer, peace during hardship, or everyday moments of hope, your story can help others discover the living presence of Jesus Christ. Highlights Why your personal testimony carries spiritual impact The significance of the 500 witnesses to Jesus’ resurrection How authenticity builds credibility when sharing faith Why Christians don’t need all the answers to witness effectively Overcoming fear and hesitation when talking about Jesus Simple ways to share the hope of Christ in everyday conversations How your story can encourage others to seek God personally Do you want to listen ad-free? Full Transcript Below: Your Witness MattersBy: Whitney Hopler Bible Reading:“After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.” – 1 Corinthians 15:6, NIV When I was first learning about journalism – as an editor for my high school’s newspaper – I read a story that my fellow student Scott submitted and marveled at all the great quotes he had included. But none of those quotes featured names. They were all followed by the phrase “one student said.” So, I asked Scott to attribute the quotes. It was then that he revealed the “one student” was himself! I had to explain to him that he couldn’t just make up the quotes he wanted to feature in the story. Scott learned about the importance of authenticity and credibility that day, and I had to laugh that he had even considered we might run his story without proper attribution. I love reading the Bible’s stories of Jesus’ appearances to many different people after his resurrection. One of my favorite reports is in 1 Corinthians 15:6, which mentions that the resurrected Jesus appeared to more than 500 people at once – and that many of those people were still living at the time this verse was written, so those who read it could seek them out and hear their own stories of witnessing Jesus personally. All of those witnesses together offer credible evidence that Jesus really was resurrected from the dead and visited many people afterward. You are also a witness to the fact that Jesus is alive. While you didn’t see him appear physically during biblical times, you’ve seen Jesus at work in your life. You’ve experienced how Jesus answered your prayers in all sorts of ways, such as by sending you guidance, giving you peace, or encouraging you. By sharing your stories of witnessing Jesus’ work in your life, you can help other people discover that Jesus is still living and active. Sometimes you may hesitate to share your stories because you’re afraid someone will ask a hard theological question you can‘t answer. But look back at that group of 500 people. They weren’t experts; they were witnesses. A witness’s job isn’t to be the judge, the jury, or the lawyer. A witness’s only job is to say: “This is what I saw, and this is what happened to me.” When you dare to share honest stories about how Jesus meets you in your struggles, you give others permission to be honest, too. Your authenticity can inspire others to walk closer to Jesus themselves. This verse mentions that most of those 500 witnesses were “still living.” This was an open invitation for skeptics to go and investigate by talking to them directly about their experiences with the resurrected Jesus. Today, you are the “still living” proof for the people in your own life. You’re the witness in your office, in your gym, in your family group chat, and wherever else you can share your stories of Jesus at work in your life. Jesus wants you to share his Gospel message in fresh ways whenever you have opportunities to do so. Just sharing simple ways that Jesus has given you hope lately or answered a specific prayer to help you can make a significant positive difference in other people’s lives. You don’t have to give people a sermon. Just witness authentically how Jesus is working in your life. No one else can tell your stories of what Jesus is doing in your life. If you stay silent, some credible reports of God’s goodness stay hidden. But if you witness to others about how you’ve seen Jesus, you can point many people toward hope. So, go ahead and share what you’ve seen. You never know whose life might be changed by your witness! Intersecting Faith & Life: As you consider how important it is for you to share your authentic stories of faith in God, reflect on these questions: When was a time you saw Jesus at work in your life that you haven’t yet shared with anyone? What’s the biggest fear that holds you back from talking about your faith with others? How can you overcome that fear, with God’s help? Who in your life right now needs to hear you witness about the hope that Jesus offers? How can you share a story with that person about how Jesus has given you hope? How does the idea of being a witness – who just says what you’ve seen – put less pressure on you than being a teacher or preacher? What credible evidence can people see that shows them Jesus is alive and active in your life right now? Feeling unseen, overlooked, or forgotten? Genesis 16:13 reveals a powerful truth—God is El Roi, “the God who sees me”—reminding us that our deepest need to be known and valued is fully met in Him. In a world that constantly pushes us to chase recognition, validation, and visibility, Scripture redirects our focus to a God who already sees every detail of our lives. Hagar’s story shows us that even in moments of isolation, pain, and injustice, God is present and attentive. He sees what others miss. He cares when others overlook. Instead of striving to be noticed by people who cannot truly fulfill us, we’re invited to rest in the steady, personal, and unchanging attention of our Creator. When we anchor our identity in being seen by God, we find lasting security, purpose, and peace. Highlights The desire to be seen and valued is part of being human God reveals Himself as El Roi—the God who sees you personally Hagar’s story shows God’s care in moments of isolation and pain You don’t have to chase validation—God already sees and values you God knows every detail of your life, down to the smallest things True identity is found in being known by God, not others Resting in God’s attention brings peace and security Do you want to listen ad-free? She said, “You are the God who sees me.” She also said, “Have I truly seen the One who sees me?” —Genesis 16:13 NLT Recently, I read a news story headline that said 100 people gathered to be in a music video. They wanted to be seen. Especially here in the USA, there is a fascination with being an extra in a movie or becoming a professional actor and famous movie star. People often say they do this because they want to make an impact, be seen, be heard, be noticed, and be remembered. This made me think. Why do we rush to be seen by people on television, in music videos, at big events, and on social media? Perhaps it is because, deep inside, every human has a need to be seen. We want to know that we matter. We want to be acknowledged, recognized, and celebrated. This is a totally normal part of our human experience, but is it healthy if we’re chasing after fame more than seeking God? While there may not be anything wrong with wanting to be seen and remembered by the people in our world, I would like to encourage you with this timeless truth: You are seen by God. He is the Creator of the universe and all the galaxies. There is a popular inspirational quote that says: “How cool is it that the same God who created mountains, oceans, and galaxies looked at you and thought the world needed one of you, too.” God loves you. He knows you. He sees you. In a world where we are challenged to prove that we matter, we need to remember our Creator loves us endlessly. We matter to Him. The Bible says God knew us before we were born (Jeremiah 1:5). It also says God knit us together in our mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13). This means God sees us as no one else can. He created humankind with deep care and attention to detail. The Bible says all the hairs on our head are numbered (Luke 12:7). If you have a lot of hair on your head, then you may see the significance of this statement on a deeper level. God sees everything you go through during your life here on Earth, and He will intervene where needed, as He did for Hagar. She was the servant of Abraham and Sarah. They feared God but were childless well into what we would call their golden years. When God promised them that they would have a son, they didn’t believe Him because of their old age and the fact that Sarah was past her childbearing years. Therefore, after waiting on God for a while, Sarah became impatient and decided with her husband to take the matter into their own hands by making Hagar pregnant by Abraham. After Hagar knew she was with child, Sarah became jealous and mistreated Hagar. Hagar took her baby and ran into the wilderness to escape all the abuse. It was there while she wept alone in deep despair that God showed up and comforted Hagar. At the end of this divine encounter, Hagar called God “El Roi,” which means “The God Who Sees.” The God who saw Hagar in her distress and despair sees us, too. Nothing we go through is unnoticed by Him. When we feel like we have no one else to turn to, we can turn to our Savior (Jesus Christ). The Bible says He will be with us unto the end of the world (Matthew 28:20) because He loves us. Why clamor to shake hands with our favorite actors, celebrities, politicians, royalty, wealthy people, and influencers who cannot save us…when we have the full attention of the One who believes we are worth dying for (John 3:16)? The Bible says in Psalm 146:3-4 (NIV), “Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing.” Only God can save us. And He will never die. In closing, I would like to encourage you to seek God first if you have not already. Know that your value is priceless to Him. We don’t have to clamor to be close to Him, heard by Him, and seen by Him. He is already near us and sees us clearly. When God looks at us, He doesn’t see an overwhelming crowd of 8.3 billion people alive here on Earth. He sees each one of us as if we are the only person on this planet, and He gives us personalized attention with great care and compassion. He pays attention to detail. And as our Master Teacher, He differentiates instruction to meet each of our needs uniquely. While there may not be anything wrong with wanting to be seen for the right reasons and make an impact on this world, I encourage you to always remember that you are already seen, cherished, and treasured by the Eternal King. Hey friends, welcome back to Anchored by the Sword Podcast. Today's conversation is tender, honest, and so needed.I'm joined by Tiffany Stein, who just released a brand-new book: Mourning God: Grieving Loss, Wrestling with God, and Finding Your Way Back to Life. And let me tell you — this episode is for anyone who has ever walked through grief, felt disoriented in their faith, or wondered, “God… where are You in this?”In this episode, Tiffany shares: • Life in Austin, Texas, and how she now gets to disciple nine-year-olds as a 4th grade teacher at a Christian private school • Her background in church ministry (including serving as a women's pastor) and what it looked like to walk with people toward Christ • Her personal “freedom journey” — from fearing a “righteous and angry God,” to slowly discovering God as loving, present, and safe • How seasons of depression, questioning, and searching shaped her faith (and why asking hard questions doesn't mean you're walking away from God)Tiffany's story of lossTiffany opens up about the devastating loss of her son, David, who was born in 2018 with a congenital heart abnormality and spent 53 days in the NICU before he went to be with the Lord. She shares what it was like to grieve publicly while also serving as pastors — and how the hardest part wasn't only the loss… but the feeling that God's presence “lifted” afterward. That “double grief” became part of what birthed this book: • grieving her child • and grieving the God she thought she knewA word for the Church: please stop saying thiscatWe also talk about how well-meaning Christians sometimes use “quick words” that actually cause more harm — especially phrases like:“Everything happens for a reason.”Tiffany gives such a needed invitation for believers to learn the ministry of presence, and to normalize lament the way Scripture does (because yes… a huge portion of the Psalms are lament).Sometimes the holiest thing you can do is: • show up • sit in silence • bring a meal • remember the anniversary • send the Mother's Day card • and let people grieve without being correctedBecause grief doesn't need to be fixed — it needs to be witnessed.Friend, if you're grieving… if you're wrestling… if you're angry… if you feel distant… please hear me: you are not disqualified. God can handle your questions, your tears, and your lament.Bio:Tiffany Stein is an ordained minister and trusted shepherd with more than a decade of ministry experience. Feeling brokenhearted, crushed in spirit, or painfully alone can make God feel distant—but Psalm 34:18 assures us the Lord is near in our deepest pain. This devotional points to God’s nearness in suffering, reminding us that He sees, understands, and saves those who feel shattered by life’s hardships. Highlights Feeling alone often hurts more deeply than difficult circumstances themselves. David wrote Psalm 34 during a season of fear, humiliation, and desperation. Scripture describes “brokenhearted” and “crushed” as being shattered beyond repair—yet God draws near. David chose to seek God rather than bitterness or despair. God hears our cries and remains attentive to every moment of distress. Turning to God in pain brings comfort, clarity, and renewed hope. Praise and prayer can coexist with fear, sorrow, and uncertainty. Do you want to listen ad-free? Full Transcript Below: Held By the One Who Sees and Understands Our Pain By: Jennifer Slattery Bible Reading: The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. - Psalm 34:18, NIV When I look back on some of my most painful experiences, particularly during my homeless period in my late teens, it wasn’t my circumstances that caused the most grief. What hurt most was the fact that I felt alone. I now realize that wasn’t my reality; that the Lord saw me, loved me, and, as today’s verse assures, remained with me every dark moment of every distressing day. David, ancient Israel’s second king, wrote Psalm 34 during a time of crisis. In fear for his life, he hid in Philistine territory, the land of ancient Israel’s fiercest enemies, and in the very city from which Goliath, the warrior David beheaded, came. Learning of his presence, the king's servants said, “Isn’t this David, the king of the land? Isn’t he the one they sing about in their dances: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands’?” (1 Samuel 21:11, NIV). In other words, isn’t this the guy who killed many of our warriors? 1 Samuel 21:13 states that, “David took these words to heart and was very much afraid of Achish, king of Gath” (NIV, emphasis mine). This gains emphasis when one considers that, as a teen, he took on and defeated a large, heavily armed tyrant that had paralyzed the entire Israeli army. And yet, he felt afraid. In desperation, David prayed to God, asking for mercy and declaring, twice, that he would place his trust in the Lord (Psalm 56). He then pretended to be insane, “making marks on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard” (1 Samuel 21:14, NIV). How humiliating this must have been—a powerful and successful warrior and the man anointed to reign as ancient Israel’s next king, survived by feigning severe mental illness. As humiliating as this must have been, it saved his life. Then we get to Psalm 34, a beautiful passage in which he declared His trust in and love for God, stating, “I will extol the Lord… his praise will always be on my lips … my soul will boast in the Lord” (V. 1-2, NIV, emphasis mine). He wrote that God heard his cries, saved him from his troubles, and kept His eyes upon him, adding today’s verse in which he confidently proclaimed the Lord’s nearness in times of distress. Again, today’s verse states, The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. David wasn’t just sad, concerned, or discouraged. In the original Hebrew, the word that our Bibles translate as broken has the connotation of something that’s been shattered into pieces. The ending phrase conveys a similar meaning. The word translated as crushed, in the original Hebrew, refers to something pulverized to dust and beyond repair. Scripture uses the same word in Psalm 90:3, which reads: “You turn people back to dust, saying, ‘Return to dust, you mortals’ (NIV, emphasis mine). Have you ever experienced emotional pain so intense that your chest physically hurt and you struggled to breathe? That was how David felt, and understandably so. He feared for his life, likely the lives of his family, was run out of his homeland and everything he knew, and was forced to live as a fugitive for at least a decade. Oh, how lonely and disoriented he must’ve felt. He could’ve turned bitter or become swallowed up in his grief. Instead, he turned to God and sought comfort in Him. That was David’s regular practice. As the New International Chronological Bible states, “Virtually every important encounter he faces becomes memorialized in his petitions to God.” Yet, his psalms don’t just record his requests. They’re also always filled with praise. Intersecting Life & Faith: What a powerful example for us to follow. Sadly, when I feel sad and afraid, initially, I often get stuck in my head. That only makes things worse as one concern tends to lead to another, then another, until I’m nearly buried in gloom. Thankfully, God always meets me there, draws me into His tender embrace, and speaks encouraging truths to my soul. As today’s verse states, He moves close to the brokenhearted. This won’t change. I’m learning, however, that my sorrow feels much more manageable and less dark when I turn to the One who always turns toward me. He’s turning toward you, in your pain, as well. Amen.Old Testament2 Samuel 6:1-5, 12b-19David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. David and all the people with him set out and went from Baale-judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts who is enthroned on the cherubim. They carried the ark of God on a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart with the ark of God; and Ahio went in front of the ark. David and all the house of Israel were dancing before the Lord with all their might, with songs and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the city of David with rejoicing; and when those who bore the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling. David danced before the Lord with all his might; David was girded with a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of theLord with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal daughter of Saul looked out of the window, and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart. They brought in the ark of the Lord, and set it in its place, inside the tent that David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt offerings and offerings of well-being before theLord. When David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the offerings of well-being, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts, and distributed food among all the people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women, to each a cake of bread, a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins. Then all the people went back to their homes. The PsalmPsalm 24Domini est terra1 The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it, *the world and all who dwell therein.2 For it is he who founded it upon the seas *and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep.3 "Who can ascend the hill of the Lord? *and who can stand in his holy place?"4 "Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, *who have not pledged themselves to falsehood, nor sworn by what is a fraud.5 They shall receive a blessing from the Lord *and a just reward from the God of their salvation."6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, *of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob.7 Lift up your heads, O gates;lift them high, O everlasting doors; *and the King of glory shall come in.8 "Who is this King of glory?" *"The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle."9 Lift up your heads, O gates;lift them high, O everlasting doors; *and the King of glory shall come in.10 "Who is he, this King of glory?" *"The Lord of hosts,he is the King of glory."orOld...

Amen.Old Testament1 Samuel 8:4-11, (12-15), 16-20, (11:14-15)All the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, and said to him, “You are old and your sons do not follow in your ways; appoint for us, then, a king to govern us, like other nations.” But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to govern us.” Samuel prayed to the Lord, and the Lord said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. Just as they have done to me, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so also they are doing to you. Now then, listen to their voice; only—you shall solemnly warn them, and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.”So Samuel reported all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. He said, “These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen, and to run before his chariots; [and he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots. He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his courtiers. He will take one-tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and his courtiers.] He will take your male and female slaves, and the best of your cattle and donkeys, and put them to his work. He will take one-tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves. And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves; but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; they said, “No! but we are determined to have a king over us, so that we also may be like other nations, and that our king may govern us and go out before us and fight our battles.”[Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingship.” So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal. There they sacrificed offerings of well-being before the Lord, and there Saul and all the Israelites rejoiced greatly.]The PsalmPsalm 138Confitebor tibi1 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with my whole heart; *before the gods I will sing your praise.2 I will bow down toward your holy templeand praise your Name, *because of your love and faithfulness;3 For you have glorified your Name *and your word above all things.4 When I called, you answered me; *you increased my strength within me.5 All the kings of the earth will praise you, O Lord, *when they have heard the words of your mouth.6 They will sing of the ways of the Lord, *that great is the glory of the Lord.7 Though the Lord be high, he cares for the lowly; *he perceives the haughty from...

In this episode we talk about the joy that comes as a result of being in the presence of God and how important it is that we be walking in that joy.Other episodes referenced in this one:Episode 72: A sacrifice of praiseListen to the sermon by J. D. Greear that I mentionedBelow is the quote from J. D. Greear that I read near the end. Two people asked for it after this lesson was originally given; so, I wanted to include it here as well in case anyone else wanted to note it down."When the Holy Spirit, your real Shepherd speaks, it's in the context of hope. Yes, He will convict you of sin, but when He does, it is redemptive. He identifies what He wants you to change, He gives you a plan to do it, and He assures you of His ability to accomplish it through your life. His voice leads to clarity, and love, and life. When one of the demonic realm speaks to you with a fiery dart, it is in the context of condemnation and despair. It is never clear what they want you to change, there is certainly no hope or no redemption in it. The voice just screams hopelessness and despair.…When our enemy speaks, it has the soundtrack of death, and defeat, and confusion, and despair. When Jesus speaks, it is filled with invitation, and clarity, and love, and hope. Any voice leading you to confusion and despair is your enemy's voice, even if it's using valid questions or pointing out true facts.…My shepherd never leads to confusion and darkness. He leads only to life. Even if Satan is pointing out true things in your life, if it's leading you to despair, recognize that as his voice and resist it.…In your life, the voice of despair is the voice of Satan and never the voice of the Holy Spirit."Scriptures referenced:Matthew 4:4Ephesians 1:17Psalm 63Psalm 4:6-7Numbers 6:24-26Psalm 16:11Psalm 34:5Psalm 34:8John 15:4-5Galatians 5:22-23Psalm 36:7-9Psalm 37:4Malachi 1:6-14Psalm 50:14-15Psalm 50:23Hebrews 13:151 Thessalonians 5:16-18Psalm 69:30-31Philippians 2:13Matthew 3:13-4:11James 1:2-4Romans 8:28James 1:25Psalm 66:16Psalm 34:1-3Proverbs 27:21Luke 17:11-19Hebrews 11:6Psalm 1:1-3John 15:9-11Psalm 33:1Psalm 40:16Psalm 59:17Psalm 71:8Hebrews 12:2Matthew 7:7James 4:2Philippians 4:6-7John 10:10Matthew 11:28Romans 8:1John 14:16-17Revelation 12:10-11Romans 8:33-34**CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS**I switched the word order of Romans 8:28 (although it didn't affect the meaning). Here is the correct wording: "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose."When I said I could think of two times where the Lord really did something in my life and then I was hit with anxiety, I meant that there are two times I could think of that intense anxiety immediately followed what the Lord did. I didn't mean to imply that I could think of only two times when I could remember Him working in my circumstances. I can think of countless times He has worked!Support the showIf you feel so led, you can support the podcast by clicking HERE or by clicking the "Support the show" button above.
