Does a friend asking you the question, “Hey, let's go grab something to eat?” make your stomach drop with fear, anxiety, and shame? Do you wonder to yourself, “Why is it so hard for me to eat in restaurants and relax...it seems so easy for everyone else.” Eating out is something that I used to absolutely hate. When I was in the thralls of my disordered eating/weight obsession days my anxiety would go through the roof if I didn't know exactly how many calories I was eating or exactly what the ingredients were. These strict rules and regulations made eating out pretty much impossible to enjoy. It was torturous, actually. Boundaries define us. They define what is you and what is not you. A boundary shows you where you end and where someone/something else begins, leading to a sense of ownership. Think of how confusing it would be if someone told you to "guard this property diligently, because I will hold you responsible for what happens here," and then did not tell you the boundaries of the property. Or they did not give you the means with which to protect the property. This would be not only confusing but also potentially dangerous. The Bible tells us clearly what our parameters are and how to protect them, but often our family, or other relationships, confuse us about our parameters. In addition to showing us what we are responsible for, boundaries help us define what is not on our property and what we are not responsible for. We are not, for example, responsible for other people. Nowhere are we commanded to have 'other-control', although we spend a lot of time and energy trying to get it! I don't know about you, but when I start to adopt new habits that make me feel great, I want to share them with everyone I know. Especially with those that I love the most, my family members. So when I started to eat a healthy diet, I wanted to share these eating habits with my family. There are so many benefits to adopting healthy eating habits: more energy, weight management, better sleep, even changes in our gut that means reduced bloating and gas. It's natural that you'd want your family to experience all these wonderful things! The other part of eating healthier, is it helps if the people around you are on board as well. As with all healthy habits, having people around you on the same journey will help hold you accountable, give you someone to bounce ideas off and support you when you're struggling. 1. Introduce them 2. Share your results 3. Don't share your results (ha, I know I contradicted myself there, but listen in and see why) 4. Share easy changes 5.
