If you've ever made a quick purchase that didn't quite align with your financial goals, you're not alone. It happens to the best of us! In this episode, Danielle Hayden, CPA and founder of Kickstart Accounting, Inc., tackles the challenge of impulse spending as an entrepreneur with a practical approach that's meant to empower you, not make you feel guilty. Whether you're a free spender, saver, perfectionist, or balance seeker, this episode is filled with strategies you can use to stay in control of your money, help curb those impulse purchases, and make smarter financial decisions that align with your goals, personality, and core values. Key Takeaways: Know Your Money Personality: Understanding whether you're a Free Spender, Saver, Perfectionist, or Balance Seeker can help you become more mindful of your financial habits and tailor your strategies accordingly. Step 1 - Budgeting as a Planning Tool: A budget isn't about restriction, it's your business's roadmap. Setting aside time to plan expenses helps you make smarter, more intentional decisions. Step 2 - Use the 48-Hour Rule: Delaying purchases by just two days can dramatically reduce impulse spending and give you space to assess alignment with your budget and goals. Step 3 - Don't Decide Based on Price Alone: The cheapest option isn't always the best fit. Consider alignment with your values, quality of service, and long-term ROI when choosing vendors. Step 4 - Review Existing Vendors First: Before jumping ship, explore whether your current tools or service providers can meet your evolving needs. Feedback and a simple conversation could reveal untapped value. Step 5 - Plan for Impulse Spending: Set aside an “allowance” in your budget for unplanned yet exciting opportunities. This helps you stay flexible without blowing up your financial goals. Step 6 - Avoid Last-Minute Decisions: Waiting until the final hour leads to rushed (and usually regrettable) choices. Plan ahead for renewals, tax time, and big expenses. Step 7 - Review Financials Monthly: Regularly reviewing your KSA Snapshot and financials keeps you grounded in reality, reveals patterns, and helps you make better decisions month over month. Bonus - Involve Your Money Team: Share your goals with your financial team so they can hold you accountable, offer insights, and help course-correct when needed. Topics Discussed: How Your Money Personality Type Affects Your Spending (00:00:16 – 00:02:12) Why a Budget is Necessary to Help with Spending Freedom (00:02:12 – 00:03:02) Ways to Help Curb Impulse Buying (00:03:02 – 00:08:38) Planning for Unexpected Opportunities or “Allowance Budgeting” (00:08:38 – 00:09:58) Using Monthly Financial Reviews to Keep Your Spending Aligned with Your Goals (00:12:01 - 00:13:40) Resources: Money Personality Quiz | kickstartaccountinginc.com/quiz Book a Call with Kickstart Accounting, Inc.: https://www.kickstartaccountinginc.com/book Connect with Kickstart Accounting, Inc.: Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/Kickstartaccounting YouTube | https://www.youtube.com/@businessbythebooks Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/kickstartaccountinginc

Summary In this episode, Travis Morgan from MBA Whisperer discusses the intricacies of applying to business schools, debunking common myths and providing valuable insights into the application process. He emphasize the importance of resumes, essays, and understanding school fit over rankings. The discussion also covers the significance of test scores, the role of waitlists, and alternative testing options like the Executive Assessment. Takeaways Your resume is the first impression in applications. Connecting with current students can enhance your application. Admissions committees want to see a three-dimensional applicant. Essays should reflect your personal story, not just professional achievements. Top schools are not the only path to success in business. Rankings should not dictate your school choice. Lower-ranked schools can still offer valuable opportunities. Waitlisted candidates are still strong contenders. The GMAT is not solely a math or English test; it's about problem-solving skills. The Executive Assessment is a viable alternative for many applicants. If the fear of failure has ever held you back from fully ‘going for it' with your weight loss goals, this episode is for you. Many women feel like they've “failed” so many times at losing weight that they've lost trust in themselves, leaving them hesitant to try again. And I GET IT—I've been there, too. The fear of failure holds so many of us back from FULLY showing up for our goals. But it's essential to stop letting the fear of failure keep you on the sidelines. Because here's the truth: failure isn't the end of the story—it's simply part of the game. In this episode, I share a powerful lesson from my daughter's first jiu-jitsu Game Night and how her coach's perspective on failure changed EVERYTHING. You'll learn how to: Reframe failure as an important part of success. (yes, you read that right. Failure is important!) Shift from hesitating on the sidelines to ‘charging the line' with confidence in your goals. Approach your weight loss goals with renewed self-trust, COURAGE, and a belief in your ability. This episode will change the way you see failure—which will change the way you show up for YOUR GOALS this year. Listen now and start playing ALL IN. xo Brenda PS. Ready to take these lessons deeper? Let's talk about setting the stage for greatness, because if you're not planning for success, you're basically setting yourself up to fall flat. I'm breaking down the importance of goal setting—but not in that boring, surface-level way. We're getting real about evaluating your goals through the lens of your actual time and energy. Because let's face it: not every goal deserves your full attention, and some need to wait their turn. Before you dive headfirst into your next big ambition, we're reflecting on last year—the wins, the losses, and everything in between. What did you crush? Where did you miss the mark? Spoiler alert: those missed opportunities and failures are pure gold when it comes to learning and growing. This isn't just a “rah-rah, set goals” pep talk; it's about building a roadmap that's rooted in your unique journey. We're also diving into one of the most powerful tools for personal and professional growth: feedback. Yep, we're embracing it, not dodging it, because feedback is your secret weapon to leveling up. I'm sharing how to use feedback as a launchpad for even more success, transforming critiques into actionable insights that help you adjust your course and crush it in the future. Whether it's about refining your goals or tweaking your approach, feedback gives you the clarity you need to make smarter, bolder moves. If you're ready to reflect, reassess, and set a future so solid it makes your past self jealous, this episode is for you. You're capable of more than you think, and I'm here to help you own it! Things that we covered in this episode ⬇️
We are into the last six weeks of the year. As you look back over the past 10 months, how are you doing on your goals you set back in January? If you're like most, your goals are struggling. In this episode, I have a great interview with Ken Williams to uncover why most goals fail and what to do about it. YOUR GOALS WITH THE END IN MIND I am big fan of beginning with the end in mind. When we talk about growing your audience, building your business, or simply refining your call to action, we often talk about starting with the end in mind. The end is the definition of your goals. Where do you want to end up? Unless you can get perfectly clear on where you want to land, your goals have no hope of succeeding. YOUR IDEAL LISTENER The end in mind is exactly why you need to clearly define your ideal target listener. How will you know if you've attracted the perfect client if you haven't defined what that looks like? Many coaches I speak with will describe their ideal client to me as an age range. They might say their ideal client is between 35- and 55-years-old. Worse yet, they might tell me they help everybody. Let's just take 35 to 55. Consider a 35-year-old. Where are they in their career? They've been working full-time in their career for ten or fifteen years. How about their family? They might have a couple kids that are 8 and 10. They spend a lot of time running their kids here and there. Now consider a 55-year-old. It's the other end of the range. Where are they in their career? Maybe ten or fifteen years from retirement. How about their family? They might have a couple kids that are 28 and 30. This person could very well be a grand parent. Now when you are trying to attract your ideal client you will describe their pains and challenges so clearly they think you are reading their mail. Do these two people sound like they have the same challenges and pain in their lives? Is the timeline to overcome those challenges similar in any way? This is the power of clarity. Start with the end in mind. CLARITY ON YOUR GOALS Now when you set goals, everyone will tell you to be specific and measurable. Start with the end in mind. So, why aren't your goals working? Why aren't you succeeding at achieving them? The problem is your goals are too smart. Smart goals aren't working, and there is a reason why. This is the reason I have Ken Williams on the show today. He will show you how to set goals you can actually accomplish. KEN WILLIAMS Ken Williams is a life coach, a chocolate cake baker, and the father of five kids. While he has authored several books, including "21 Days to Success through Networking," his career took a meandering route through call centers, sales organizations, and industrial environments, until he discovered how his past goal-setting efforts had been setting him up to fail. Now, he hosts the Bad Boss Podcast, where he helps listeners overcome conflicts with difficult bosses, and he teaches his clients how to get the results they want by setting S.T.U.P.I.D. Goals. In this conversation, Ken Williams and I get deep into the world of goal setting. We explore why traditional goals often fail and how a shift in perspective can make all the difference. Ken shares his transformative experience with obtaining a ham radio license, which changed his approach to setting and achieving goals. ARE YOUR GOALS SMART OR STUPID This episode challenges the effectiveness of SMART goals and introduces a novel concept called "STUPID goals," designed to fill gaps left by traditional methods. Ken recounts his initial reluctance to get a ham radio license and how passing the test opened his eyes to the importance of relationships and experiences over conventional goal metrics. His story underlines the significance of tying goals to personal experiences, making them more inspiring and easier to achieve. He further contrasts "stupid goals" with "smart goals," clarifying that the former emphasizes stretch, tangibility, unshakable commitment, and the possibility of achieving them realistically yet challengingly. During our conversation, Ken critiques SMART goals, pointing out their limitations in providing a clear path when goals are unmet. He emphasizes the emotional toll of perceived failures and describes how "stupid goals" can offer a more compassionate and practical framework. Using analogies and personal stories, Ken makes a compelling case for goals that inspire and energize, challenging listeners to rethink their approach to personal and professional achievement. The episode also highlights the importance of incremental, small steps in goal-setting. We discuss various techniques, including leveraging resources like print-on-demand publishing and using tools such as the app My Streaks to build habits gradually. Be sure to grab Ken's free gift. You can download his Stupid Goals Anti-Planner at https://kenwilliamscoaching.com/stupid. We have six weeks left in the year. Let's set some goals for the next year that you can actually accomplish. In today's episode, I reflect on my journey with fitness and how my approach to motivation has shifted. We dive into the core of what first got me running — that need to connect with people and the challenge of running my first 5K. As someone who spends a lot of time working solo, running gave me a reason to be around others, which brought me a sense of joy and novelty. As I look back, I've realised that the excitement of running wasn't just about the finish line but also about how it made me feel. However, over time, my motivation has evolved. Life seasons change, and now walking, rather than running, feels more fulfilling. Walking has become my way to reconnect with nature, take photographs, and enjoy moments with family and friends — things that feel harder to do while running. Why Re-evaluate Your Goals and Activities? In talking with podcast guests, I've found that sometimes achieving a goal weight or running pace doesn't provide the feeling we expect. That's why I'm asking myself: What do I genuinely want from my fitness journey right now? Instead of forcing a routine, I'm embracing walking as a way to move, connect, and unwind. This shift reminds me to question whether I'm staying active for myself or just because it's what I've always done. Walking has become a regular part of my routine because it feels accessible and enjoyable. I can listen to podcasts, explore new places, and even catch up with loved ones. Walking has also been a way to fit movement into my busy schedule without adding extra stress. It's a reminder that sometimes, taking a break from our usual routine can actually bring us closer to our well-being goals. Reflecting on Seasonal Motivation and Goals Our motivation can change with the seasons, and that's okay. As the weather cools down, it's normal to feel less inclined to go out for a run, and for me, that's been an opportunity to focus on walking. Whether it's due to changes in energy, interest, or environment, there's no harm in taking time off from a fitness goal if it's not serving you anymore. We're not all meant to follow the same path, and adjusting to what feels right can lead to a more enjoyable, sustainable fitness journey. Activity Tips for Staying Active Year-Round Grab Your Journal: Write down what movement makes you happiest. Whether it's walking, dancing, or even exploring new workout classes, use this list to help you find motivation that comes from a place of joy. Embrace Seasonal Changes: Motivation naturally fluctuates, and adjusting to what feels right for you can make a huge difference. For me, switching to walking during the colder months has helped me stay active without the pressure of meeting a specific running goal. Enjoy the Process, Not Just the Goal: Remember, fitness doesn't have to be about intense workouts. Moving more can be as simple as taking longer walks, exploring local parks, or dancing. It's about finding ways to incorporate movement in a way that feels fun and fulfilling. In this season of life, I've realised that moving is about enjoying each step, not pushing myself to a specific finish line. I hope this episode encourages you to embrace movement in whatever way feels best right now. Whether it's walking, running, or trying something new, focus on what genuinely brings you joy and energy. Let's walk, move, and enjoy where we are. I want to talk about how to become obsessed with your goals. Why Should We Become Obsessed With Our Goals? It might sound a little intense, but Grant Cardone puts it best: "I suggest that you become obsessed about the things you want. Otherwise, you're going to spend a lifetime making up excuses as to why you didn't get the life that you wanted." Essentially, you either become obsessed with your goals and move forward in the life you want, or you'll dwell on excuses for why you didn't live the life you desire PROBLEM. You say you want something…but your actions… According to Robert Kiyosaki, "For many people, the power of their excuse is more powerful than their dreams." Life is coming at you full speed, and the challenges, problems, and excuses we face can often seem bigger than our dreams. Therefore, you must create reasons and goals that are bigger than your obstacles. Harv Eker summarizes it well: "You can have reasons, or you can have results. You can't have both." Making Your Goals a Must Robert Stuberg, a mentor of mine, often talks about how the real solution to creating an obsession with your goals is to make them a must. To live the life you dream of and achieve the goals you set, you must prioritize them above everything else. So, how do we do this? How do we make our priorities non-negotiable? Steps to Become Obsessed with Your Goals 1. Be Specific The biggest challenge most of us face is not knowing exactly what we want. It's super important to be very specific about your desires. Do you want more money? A better life? Improved relationships? A nicer car? What exactly do you want? What type of freedom with your time do you desire? Be clear about the specifics of your goals; specificity is the first step to achieving them 2. Make Commitments Once you know exactly what you want, you gotta commit to achieving it. You have to be ready to sacrifice something in order to get it. If you're not specific about what you want or the sacrifices you're willing to make, you won't get any closer to becoming obsessed with your goals. 3. Create Time in Your Day Allocate specific time every day to focus and concentrate on your goals. This daily focus is crucial because it helps you continually visualize your goals 4. Visualization The mind works in mysterious ways. The clearer and more real your goals become in your mind, the more doable they seem. Spend time every day visualizing your goals. The clearer you are about what you want, the more real it feels, and the more you want it. This visualization helps you become obsessed with your goals. 5. 5. Daily Rituals Establish daily rituals that remind you of your goals. This can be as simple as looking at your goals, writing them down every day, or repeating specific affirmations like "I am going to be successful." Consistency in these rituals reinforces your goals and helps your subconscious mind work towards achieving the 6. Be Relentless and Never Give Up Relentlessly pursue your goals. Never give up. I have a love-hate relationship with tracking habits and activities. I wish I could get results and make great choices without tracking, but if I'm honest with myself, I'm WAY more consistent and focused when I do. Tracking makes me more aware of my habits, and when you measure something, you naturally try to improve it. As James Clear says, "You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems." It's those small, daily actions that lead to the big changes we want to see. Here are a few things I've learned about habit tracking: Don't Overtrack. I used to track EVERYTHING—from dates with my husband to calories and the number of times I went live on Facebook. I spent more time curating the perfect life than living it. Now, I focus on the most important habits. Remember, just because you're not tracking something doesn't mean you're not doing it Performing the Habit Might Not Be Enough. This is especially true for activities like dates with your spouse. You can go through the motions just to tick the box, or you can be more intentional and present. Assess Progress Toward Your Goal. If you're tracking calories and workouts, make sure to check your progress occasionally—whether through a weigh-in or a body composition check—to ensure your habits are moving you toward your goals. Be Specific with Your Goals. If your goal is mindful eating, for example, make it specific: aim to eat mindfully for at least one meal a day. Take Out the Drama! Tracking habits is all about DATA. Ditch the shame and guilt when you're not perfect. You'll find you're WAY more consistent when you approach tracking this way. It's OK to Take Breaks. I don't always track if I'm away or if it would be super inconvenient. Sometimes, I take weeks or even months off, and that's perfectly fine. To make habit tracking easier, I've created a Google spreadsheet that helps me track my daily habits. Send me a dm or email me: tanja@tanjashaw.com to download it! Take a listen to today's episode and I'd love to hear how it's working for you and what habits you're focusing on! Tanja x

Host: Ali Novitsky, MD In this episode of "Muscles & Mindset," Dr. Ali Novitsky, obesity medicine and fitness expert, welcomes listeners to the fourth installment of the mini-nutrition series. For those who are just tuning in, she encourages them to catch up on previous episodes that explore intuitive eating, Mindful Macro® eating, and the fundamentals of calculated macros. Today, she presents a comprehensive approach that she refers to as the ultimate nutrition strategy. Episode Highlights: Introduction to the Ultimate Nutrition Strategy: This strategy builds upon the tools and concepts discussed in earlier episodes, offering a flexible way of eating that adapts to various life situations, combining intuitive eating, Mindful Macros®, and calculated macros. The Importance of Flexibility: Flexibility in eating strategies is vital for long-term success. Dr. Novitsky notes that clients often lose interest when they feel confined to a single method; hence, offering multiple options can keep them engaged and motivated. Personal Examples: She shares how she integrates these strategies into her own life, particularly during frequent work travel and family vacations. For work trips, she adheres to Mindful Macros®, making informed decisions based on portion sizes. When on family vacations, she opts for intuitive eating to fully enjoy the experience without strict structures. Calculated Macros and Nutrition Audits: Dr. Novitsky explains that calculated macros are essential for gaining insight into current eating habits. She advises clients to conduct a nutrition audit by tracking everything they consume over a week, which helps identify areas for improvement and dispels myths about being a "non-responder" to certain diets or medications. Real-Life Applications: She discusses practical scenarios where calculated macros prove beneficial, such as when someone feels their nutrition is off track or wants to build muscle mass. Calculated macros provide the necessary framework and data to make informed adjustments. Trusting Yourself: The ultimate goal is for individuals to trust their eating decisions, whether they are using intuitive eating, mindful macros, or calculated macros. Flexibility enables them to switch between these strategies as needed without feeling restricted or overwhelmed. Mindset and Motivation: Dr. Novitsky addresses the common challenge of losing motivation after the initial excitement of a new nutrition program. Understanding the mindset behind this can aid in maintaining long-term commitment and success. Practical Tips: She offers actionable advice on implementing these strategies in various situations, highlighting that all of this is learnable and achievable. Conclusion: Dr. Novitsky concludes by reminding listeners that their nutrition strategy doesn't have to be rigid. It can be a blend of intuitive eating, mindful macros, and calculated macros, tailored to their individual needs and lifestyle. She also invites them to explore her year-long strength training program, "Muscles & Mindset," available at www.thefitcollective.com/musclesandmindset, designed to complement their nutrition journey with effective workouts.
