Missing & Endangered: The Cathy Marie Moulton Case, Part Two

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 29, 2020 41:45

The narrative of Cathy Marie Moulton's story for over two decades was that she simply disappeared, that no one had any idea where she might be. Her case received minimal attention by law enforcement in the years immediately following her disappearance. It would remain ice cold until November 12, 1995, when Kevin Cady was assigned to the case. Kevin Cady literally wrote the book on this case, and I read it. One thing was crystal clear after reading his book -- Cathy did not disappear without a trace. Someone DID have an idea where she might be. Kevin Cady is on Cold in Maine to dig into the longest standing missing persons case in the state of Maine, and what happened to her after she stepped out onto Forest Avenue that September evening in 1971. This is part two of Missing & Endangered: The Cathy Marie Moulton Case. If you haven't tuned into part one yet, go back one episode for the full story. Cold in Maine launched with a mission to shed a light on Maine’s most baffling cold cases, but this isn’t just a long-standing cold case in Maine. This is one of the oldest missing persons cases in the country. It’s been 49 years this week since September 24, 1971, the day 16-year old Cathy Marie Moulton went missing from Portland, Maine. The Portland Police Department dismissed her as a runaway in 1971. Nearly 200 teens had runaway from home that year in Portland, Maine alone, but that didn't fit the daughter that Lyman "Roy" Moulton and his wife Claire knew and loved. 25 years after her disappearance, a new detective was assigned to the case, and he uncovered new details that no one bothered to look into when Cathy first disappeared.  This is Part One of Missing & Endangered: The Cathy Marie Moulton Case. Kylie takes Cold in Maine back over 100 years for a look at the case of Lottie Cote, perhaps the most sensational murder cases in Maine's history that made national headlines. In 1910, Lottie Freeman's first husband, William Sanborn, turns up missing. She suspected he fled to Canada after forging her name on some notes he couldn't pay. The beautiful Lottie's story is taken as fact, and the disappearance is never investigated.  But in 1924, when her second husband is reported missing by Lottie, it doesn't pass the sniff test for the Sheriff in North Gorham. What happened to William Sanborn and Alphonse Cote? Was Lottie truly the unlucky widow, or did she mastermind the murders of two men who believed they'd won her heart? All sources for this case and others featured on Cold in Maine are listed in the episode show notes at coldinmaine.com.  A special thanks to the newspaper.com archives for the Boston Globe, Bangor Daily News, Tuscaloosa Times, and St. Albans Daily Messenger. Crimes committed at sea, especially in international waters, are incredibly challenging to investigate. There aren’t any mid-ocean police stations reserved for crimes while underway. If a crime is committed onboard, while in international waters between the departure port and its destination, the crew members are the first responders to the scene. That means evidence is collected by untrained hands, not skilled crime scene investigators. Sometimes, the scene isn’t protected or shut down in any way. Improperly handled evidence and a disturbed crime scene can obstruct or even invalidate an investigation, forever destroying key clues to solving a crime. Since airing our episode about a tiny town in Northern Maine with alleged cult ties, something... happened.  People caught on we’d covered the story, and those people wanted to be heard. So we talked to them to hear the story from the perspectives of the people who are in it -- St. Agatha’s town manager Aubrie Michaud, and Gary “GD” Blankenship himself.  We ask them questions you want answered: What actually happened in that house? How do the residents of St. Agatha really feel about this newcomer? And is GD Blankenship actually the leader of a cult, or just trying to spread a unifying message? Here is the story of St. Agatha, a battle over a house from the Civil War, and the rumors that are still swirling about #CULTure and GD Blankenship.  Be sure to tune into the original episode that started it all.
