Host/Producer: Amy Browne The Singing Journalist, Andy Revkin, joins us today with an invitation to his upcoming talk at the Jesup Memorial Library, Thursday 3/5 at 6:30pm “In this evening of storytelling and songs, longtime journalist, author, educator and performing songwriter Andy Revkin will explore the evolution of his dual-path journey aimed at connecting the public with ideas, issues and solutions using any means possible. For decades, Andy Revkin has split his time between prize-winning environmental journalism, mostly for The New York Times, and songwriting, including music featured on NPR and an inaugural album described by the Jambands music magazine as a “tasty mix of roots goulash.” His reporting has taken him from the burning Amazon rain forest to the melting North Pole sea ice. As a musician, Andy was a frequent accompanist of folk legend Pete Seeger at Hudson Valley events and has quickly built a presence in the Downeast Maine folk scene since moving here in 2022.” (Source: Event announcement from the Jesup) About the host: Amy Browne started out at WERU as a volunteer news & public affairs producer in 2000, co-hosting/co-producing RadioActive with Meredith DeFrancesco. She joined the team of Voices producers a few years later, and has been WERU's News & Public Affairs Manager since January, 2006. In addition to RadioActive, Voices, Maine Currents and Maine: The Way Life Could Be, Amy also produced and hosted the WERU News Report for several years. She has produced segments for national programs including Free Speech Radio News, This Way Out, Making Contact, Workers Independent News, Pacifica PeaceWatch, and Live Wire News, and has contributed to Democracy Now and the WBAI News Report. She is the recipient of the 2014 Excellence in Environmental Journalism Award from the Sierra Club of Maine, and Maine Association of Broadcasters awards for her work in 2017 and 2021. Host/Producer: Glen Mittelhauser Recorded while sailing east along the Maine coast in the summer of 2025, this episode explores how cold ocean currents shape the ecology of Downeast Maine. Glen explains how the Labrador Current, Bay of Fundy tidal mixing, and underwater topography deliver cold water to eastern Maine, supporting Arctic plant communities on coastal and offshore islands and highlighting why baseline ecological data are essential as the Gulf of Maine warms. More information about Maine Natural History can be found at mainenaturalhistory.org. About the hosts: Glen Mittelhauser founded Maine Natural History Observatory (MNHO) in 2003 to fill the need for an organization that specializes in collecting, interpreting, and maintaining datasets for understanding changes in Maine's plant and wildlife populations.  Glen received his Bachelor's in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic in 1989 with a focus in the biological sciences and received his Master of Science degree in Zoology (with a focus on ornithology and statistics) from the University of Maine in 2000. Glen was the Managing Editor for Northeastern Naturalist and Southeastern Naturalist for 18 years and has served as external graduate faculty for 3 graduate student committees at the University of Maine.  Glen currently serves on the Baxter State Park Research Committee. Logan Parker is an Ecologist residing in Waldo County, Maine. Logan started the Maine Nightjar Monitoring Project in 2017 and brought the project (and his passion for bird conservation) to MNHO when he joined the team in 2018. Logan is heavily involved in the ongoing Maine Bird Atlas where he both coordinates and participates in the project's special species surveys. When “off the clock”, Logan enjoys birding, writing, gardening, and working alongside his wife, Hallee, on their off-grid home in the Maine woods. Logan is also a wildlife photographer and shares photos and field notes through his project, Here In The Wild. Welcome, Colin Williams, whose fascination with the use of language began with a grandfather from down Downeast Maine, at a university way down south, and with work in international commerce. It all inspired a poetic and lyrical volume of work. After several years of sea duty in the Navy during the Vietnam War, his matriculation at SMU (Southeastern Massachusetts University) was a welcome home flavored by the delight of the University's Paul Rudolph architecture. His tenure there included the co-chairmanship of the SMU Concert Series, which included finding art majors to design handbills, posters, tickets, and backstage passes. He directed concerts in the auditorium, the big parties in the campus center, and the 3000-seat gymnasium. These events were a 4-year experience. Colin said, "Having lived at several coastal addresses near the South Coast, the change to our urban environment was in part inspired by knowing that the Swain School of Design flavoured the neighbourhood." It was all a part, he believes, of the intersections of SMTI, SMU, and the Swain School of Design. After moving to New Bedford, the city became a village for him. Along with historic and maritime presence, a culture of musicians and artists, where "the embracing behaviour of many talents continued to be characterized by expressive and collaborative instincts." Colin Williams spoke with The Artists Index Cofounder & Podcaster Ron Fortier shared his memories of the halcyon days of SMU, as well as his love of the South Coast, and so much more.   Colin F. Williams Dartmouth, Massachusetts 02748   Email | Website | Facebook | Instagram | YouTube   NOTE: A selection of Colin's poems is in the image gallery. Colin will also introduce Scott Bishop's two podcast conversations with folk music legend, Maggi Peirce, in our next two post-holiday episodes.    ALSO AVAILABLE ON: YouTube WHILE YOU'RE HERE: Please consider donating whatever you can to ensure that our mission continues as we document the legacies of South Coast Artists. In our final segment, John Tarleton talks about Downeast Maine, the wild blueberry harvest and how a small town of fewer than 500 people came together to mourn the sudden death of his former blueberry harvest crew leader. Amid the deep cultural and political divides between big city and rural areas, Tarleton says, his trip reminded him of some of the things we share in common: a longing for community, a desire to live a meaningful life and how common people in both places are exploited and pitted against each other by the same system.

Conversations From the Pointed Firs

This month on Conversations from the Pointed Firs: a discussion between Peter Neill and Jane Crosen, a self-taught mapmaker who has spent four decades making and interpreting maps, and exploring Maine's landscape. She found her niche in maps and editing working at DeLorme Publishing in Yarmouth, where she compiled the Gazetteer listings for the all-new 1981 edition of the Maine Atlas and began discovering the natural and historic treasures of her home state. Her affinity with maps, Maine, and design inspired her to create a series of hand-drawn maps of Maine coast and lake regions. Along the way she began sharing her passion for map-reading and landscape interpretation through “map-sleuthing” slide talks and workshops. With a growing interest in Downeast Maine's mapping history and heritage landscape, she discovered George N. Colby's historic 1881 atlases of Hancock and Washington counties and found them a fascinating source. Since the original and facsimile editions were out of print, she decided to publish new editions of both atlases, arranging the maps in a more geographically consistent layout. Pairing Colby's archival maps with period photos and excerpts, with an introduction and captions for context, her Coastwise Geographic Edition atlases capture Downeast Maine in the age of sail, in the last glow of a 19th-century coastal economy. FMI visit PointedFirs.org

Returning to her roots in Downeast Maine, she moved to the Blue Hill Peninsula where she found further opportunities to explore and grow as an editor, working for WoodenBoat and other publishers. Meanwhile her affinity with maps, Maine, and design inspired her to create a series of hand-drawn maps of Maine coast and lake regions. Along the way she began sharing her passion for map-reading and landscape interpretation through “map-sleuthing” slide talks and workshops.  With a growing interest in Downeast Maine's mapping history and heritage landscape, she discovered George N. And the old houses are slowly giving way to ugly condos and mini mansions. Anna grapples with a teenage runaway, a realtor trying to condemn her cottage, a handsome artist, and the ghosts of previous tenants who make their presence known. Today I'm chatting with the very talented Nisa Smiley! We touch on so many good things like allowing trust and joy to be your guide in life and your art. I can certainly get caught up in the mind chatter telling me to be mindful that I need to make work that will pay the bills.  We also talk about the artistic and emotional value of our work to our customers. Although we don't spend a lot of time on this topic, I really think it's worth paying attention to. About Nisa... Growing up in northern New England, Nisa spent her early years in the beautiful woods and mountains, but her draw to the seaside has been present all along. At 18, she left her beloved mountains and moved to the coast. Decades later, she is still there, entranced by the inexhaustible abundance of inspiration from her natural surroundings. Nisa earned her BFA from the Maine College of Art in 2000, and then settled in Downeast Maine soon thereafter to start her family. In 2006 she founded NISA Jewelry, and since then her work has been shown in juried fine craft shows, galleries, private trunk shows, public shows, and published in multiple books and publications. She is also a seasoned teacher, and loves assisting others in their creative pursuits. She has taught countless private and public workshops, for both older children and adults, and is a certified Precious Metal Clay instructor, as well as a Master for the Craft Apprentice Program (Maine). These days, Nisa can often be found in her sunny studio in downtown Ellsworth, Maine (if it's summer, she can also be found at the beach, or at the J.McVeigh Jewelry gallery in Stonington, Maine), immersed in a plethora of organic found objects, gemstones, and precious metals. Her studio is not public, but visits by appointment are most welcome. Her latest work can be found in select galleries, as well as on her website and social media accounts (Instagram and Facebook).
