A Maine potato farmer and a Texas rancher were engaged in conversation at a political rally. The man from the Lone Star State asked, “How much land do you tend?” The Mainer replied, “About a hundred acres.” “I manage about a thousand myself,” said the Texan in a slow drawl. The man from Maine was not overly impressed, so the Texan continued, “I know where there's a much bigger ranch south of San Antonio. To give you an idea of its size, the owner can start off in the morning in his pick-up, and he ain't barely crossed his place... Article Link

How do you know we're not just trying to sell books with this pod? Well, we fire up with a Carolyn Chute novel that's ... out of print. That's some business savvy! But Sam claims she's the Faulkner of the north (an important Mainer!) and you should really find a copy if you can. And, not to worry, the rest of these books are widely available. We've trotted out the Alarm Clock sound effect again, too, which means one of these books is seriously important. This fortnight, we read: "Letourneau's Used Auto Parts," by Carolyn Chute "The Fountain," by Casey Scieszka "Leviathan Falls," by James SA Corey "London Falling," by Patrick Radden Keefe What sound effects did we give each of these books? You'll just have to listen and find out!

Deer camp is more than a place...it's a living tradition built on quiet service, shared responsibility, and deep-rooted connection with others. In this episode, we have the pleasure of Ben Kuncaitis of  @campbenny  gracing our presence. From fathers and sons to life long friends, we explore what makes deer camps special; the unseen roles, the acts of service and the commitment that runs deep to hold a deer camp together. It's a sacred tradition that, without effort, can easily be lost. Being from Michigan, Ben shares a lot of the same deer camp values that Mainer's share. Even more striking, Ben illustrates how hunters all around the globe share a commonality. Whether it's the big woods of Michigan and Maine or halfway across the world in Africa...there is a shared understanding among hunters that no matter the language, landscape or species...hunters share something real! In this gripping and eerie episode of Bigfoot Society, we meet Clark — a diesel mechanic from the Bangor area — who shares the moment he broke a branch in the woods, only to hear something impossibly powerful respond in kind. From tree snaps that shook the forest to piles of scat larger than any bear could leave, Clark's encounter changed everything he thought he knew about the wilderness of Maine. You'll hear firsthand stories from Hudson, Millinocket, and beyond — including local legends of “hairy killers” on sacred mountains and terrifying warnings left behind in the woods. Welcome to another episode of Perspective Checks where I sit down with a friend in the TTRPG world and discuss a topic of their choice! I met this episode's guest on the relatively new social media platform Threads, where the RPG community is still pretty small and interactive. Jordan is a Mainer and runs the small game company Goosepoop Games where he is focused on making silly, wholesome games. I knew I had to talk to them when I saw a recent game of theirs called Good Soup - a wholesome game where you play as woodland creatures in the Soup Troupe with alternate mechanics involving spoonfuls of a real, shared soup (preferably separate bowls but you do you).   In this episode we talk about zines in the TTRPG space, the importance of community, why we love silly games, and creativity as an outlet but also as a job.   Where to Follow Rene Plays Games: Instagram | Facebook | Twitter/X | Threads | DMs After Dark email: RenePlaysGamesPod@gmail.com   Music in the Episode: Theme Song written & produced by Dan Pomfret | @danfrombothbands

Filling in for Grace this week is Aaron Chadbourne, strong Mainer and former policy advisor for Gov. Paul LePage. Aaron talks Trump's pick for vice president that should come any day now. Of course, the former president is probably a bit busy dealing with his many sham court cases to have a minute to discern between his shortlist selections.

Lewiston, Maine - 2023. On Wednesday, October, 25th, 2023, an armed gunman entered two locations in Lewiston, Maine—Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley and Schmengee's Bar and Grill pool hall—and opened fire.  The shooter, who was identified as Robert Card, was on the run for 48-hours before taking his own life on Friday, October 27th. He killed 18 innocent people, and injured about 13 more. As a born and raised Mainer who creates this show from my home state, my heart is absolutely broken for the community, the families and friends directly impacted, and for this massive tragedy.  I felt compelled to create this short episode to honor the victims. My hope is that you walk away from this knowing something more about each of them as the amazing people they were, and not just as names on a list. This are the stories of Thomas Ryan Conrad, 34, Michael R. Deslauriers Jr. 51, and his best friend, Jason Adam Walker, 51, Tricia C. Asselin, 53, William A. Young, 44 and his son, Aaron Young, 14, Robert E. Violette, 76 and wife Lucille M. Violette, 73, Keith D. Macneir 64, Ronald G. Morin, 55, Peyton Brewer Ross, 40, Joshua A. Seal, 36, Bryan M.
