Book Vs. Movie: HairsprayThe 1988 John Waters Movie Vs. the 2007 Adaptation“Musicals in March”The Margos continue their look at “Musicals in March” with the John Waters classic Hairspray, which started with the 1988 movie starring Rikki Lake, Divine, and Debby Harry. Based on his experiences of being a fan of the 1957-1964 Baltimore teen dance TV program--The Buddy Deane Show, Waters was a huge fan of R&B music. On the Buddy Deane show, the dancers were integrated, unlike Dick Clark's American Bandstand, which was based out of Philadelphia at the same time. Baltimore Magazine April 1985 by John Waters "Ladies & Gentleman: The Nicest Kids in Town!”Being a self-described “Super Fan” of the show, the director has a well-known career as an avant-garde-loving and bizarre artist who loves things that are in bad taste. His interest in something as wholesome as Buddy Deane made him think about writing a more accessible film about a group of teen dancers/local TV stars who fight racism and oppression with their love of music and dance. Given a modest budget of $2.8 million, the film was a box office hit, and the critics loved this new era of John Waters with even bigger hits in the 90s Cry-Baby & Serial Mom. Waters continues to write and direct his work and is very popular as an actor who appears in everything from Law & Order to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisles. In 2002, the musical version premiered in Seattle with music and lyrics from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and the book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Hit is not a big enough word for this adaptation's success in the 2000s. It won eight Tony Awards (including Best Musical) in 2003 and broke all box office records in London's West End in 2008. The 2007 movie was directed by Adam Shankman and stars John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Christopher Walken and continues the big box office that started with the original 1988 film. What are the differences between the original and the latest version of the story of the AMAZING Tracy Turnblad? Which do we like best? Last week Humboldt was featured prominently in a lengthy article by GQ Magazine — for something other than weed, if you can believe it! The piece, “The Last Glimpses of California's Vanishing Hippie Utopias,” takes the reader on a tour of some of the aging and forgotten communes manifested by the generation of idealists associated with what we know nowadays as the back to the land movement. These days Richard Evans makes his home in the metropolis of Eureka, but back in the early ‘70s he and his cohorts fled the Bay Area for a more idyllic communal existence on a property in far-flung Southern Humboldt. On this week's episode of Humboldt Holding Up — LoCO's always-idealistic podcast — Evans shares with us his recollections of his back-to-the-lander days.

Mike welcomes back DAVE ZANOTTI, president of the American Policy Roundtable and host of "The Public Square" to discuss the recent article in TIME Magazine on "the shadow campaign" that was the 2020 election. Already considered a bold and shocking unveiling of what many suspected, this article is a massive work of words, and the steps taken by the subjects of the article will be studied for months ahead.

I remember a time when I was in Las Vegas. I was putting on my PJs when my phone dings. It was a text from a respectable leader whom I've been wanting to meet. The text read: “If you're free, I'm having a private happy hour. Let me know if you want in!” If you know me well, though, you know that I'm a total introvert. The only reason I was in Vegas was for business. I didn't even get to go out much. And no, I definitely didn't gamble. That night, I was SO ready to chill on my comfy bed. And I was just not in the mood to go out. But because everyone I know had said that this person is impossible to get a hold of, I decided to go. It might be my only chance. I scrambled around for something nice to wear in my carry-on. And I followed the directions she sent me to the restaurant. When I got there, there were no signs of her. I thought that I must've got lost. At that point, I decided to take off my heels and started walking barefoot. The granite floor felt icy. But I needed to let my feet breathe. People looked at me weird. But I can feel my feet blistering. So I just kept on walking. Then I saw someone who looked like the manager. I asked him if he knew anything about this happy hour. He said, “Yes, of course. Come follow me.” We took a long walk through the kitchen and I got a huge whiff of what smelled like spaghetti marinara soaked in butter. I definitely know what I'll eat later! Before I knew it, I was in this big room. Jazz was playing in the background. The person I was supposed to meet saw me coming and waved her hands vigorously. “Hey! Thalia, right? Over here!” I've never met her before. And we've only ever exchanged a few emails. But the next hour or two was pure magic. She introduced me to all her friends. Even some big names that I've been admiring from afar for years. I remember everyone laughed a lot. The food was amazing. I think I downed close to 20 skewers of grilled food. The entire time I was thinking, “How did I end up here?” I went home thinking about how much fun it was, which was weird because I didn't do the typical Vegas stuff. I'm just not that person. The following months, I got a massive opportunity from someone I met through the person who invited me to the hang. All my friends thought it was crazy. No one believed that I had somehow got connected with her. Personally, I was shocked by the whole thing, too. But the thing that surprised me the most, is that I got the opportunity NOT because I know a guy who then knows a friend of a friend of this person's sister. You know, because of all the typical ‘connection' stuff people always rave about. Quite the opposite, actually. I emailed her. BEFORE she knew me. Before she decided to invite me and gave me VIP access. She had no idea who I was. When I told people I was going to try to get in touch with her, they all said, “Don't bother … it's a waste of time.” --- Before we keep going, be sure to hit FOLLOW or SUBSCRIBE. --- This year, the pandemic has really made us think about what actually IS worth our time. Meanwhile, you might even be feeling like there's this mind-numbing sameness in your life. Going through the motions, here are what some people have said recently: Nothing is working “I was really excited about my business until the excitement wore off. Every day I trick my brain into working hard, but I let other aspects of life take up my time and haven't been focusing enough. I can't keep doing this. It's tough to be consistent … literally nothing is working”. I just keep doing the same things over and over again “I just can't find the confidence and strength to put myself out there more. Somehow I'd prefer to do work that makes me want to kill myself over work that I love to do and is better paid. I ended up just sticking with what sucks, so that I didn't have to talk to people … Why can't we just pay someone to do everything. I don't like the whole dress up every day and do it all over again. I just want to make money”. I don't know what people will say “If I can start working for myself, I will be so much happier with life. It doesn't even make sense to go back to work. I think I'm just tired of working for someone else. But I don't know what people will think of me if they see my email. What will they say? I don't want people to know about it. I'm just not sure how to approach people if they don't know me. I'd send them an email. I'd refreshed my inbox every day. Nothing. Then I follow up. Radio silence. And on and on it goes …” Yes, reaching out to people for ANY reason at all, can be complicated. Let alone doing it so that you can find the right mentor, great clients, or get your dream job even. For one, people's lives and work patterns have changed, particularly now after COVID. There are now new rules to getting someone to notice your work, especially if they're busy. And unless you do it right, you may end up seeing everyone left and right celebrating their success while you get further and further left behind. But if you know: When to reach busy people so that they take notice, How to catch their attention without sounding like a broken record, and How to get a reply within 24-hours and save yourself from hours of follow-up hell, THEN you will become unstoppable. Work will feel like finally putting your feet up on your couch after a long day. Before that, though, you can actually do a few small things that can give you BIG wins, like: Focusing first on when you say things, then on what to say. Think of it like if someone had asked you to move in on the first date. You'll freak out. No, actually, you'll probably run away first--as you should. Taking care of how you're approaching them, then on how often. And yes, there's a BIG difference between the two. I get asked so many times, “Thalia, how often should I follow up?” While the frequency matters, ways that you do it matter more. And, Finding ways to take non-values OFF their shoulders, instead of simply adding value. If I hear ONE more person out there saying that the key to success is to add value, I swear I'll just turn on the news and voluntarily watch it on repeat for three straight days. So what does this really look like, though, when it's your turn to open up that blank document, and stare at the blinking cursor? And how can you hit Send without that awful feeling that they would probably just scroll past your message or, worse, that they'd just dump what took you 40-minutes to write ... in the trash? I talked about this in an article I wrote that went out to millions of readers of Entrepreneur Magazine this morning. You can see what they're all reading today by clicking here. US and China WAR May be Inevitable, As Economy Collapses And Democrats And GOP Fight, War Approaches.https://youtu.be/mvXWZUYzm-YTim PoolUS and China WAR May be Inevitable, As Economy Collapses And Democrats And GOP Fight, War Approaches. The Thucydides Trap says that whenever a rising power moves to displace the existing superpower war is inevitable. 5 years ago The Atlantic wrote that not only was war with the US and China likely it was way more likely than anyone realized. They wrote that something could happen that will cause a cascade affect resulting in total war. And now many people are bullish on war. A series of military confrontations, China's attempts to cause us harm during the crisis, the collapse of crude oil prices, and the economic collapse have put the world in the most dangerous position it has been in yet. Nuclear weapons stand at the ready and no one is willing to back down. As more people in the US, not just Trump but now Democrats and joe Biden, move to blame China it seems that it is only a matter of time when full scare war breaks out. Or maybe it won't, maybe this is just hype and media sensationalism, maybe the real war will be an information war. #China #Trump #Democrats SUPPORT JOURNALISM. How do you handle the haters? I mean, haters gonna hate, right? So, we’ve just sort of got to shake it off. And, while I love that idea of being able to just shake it off, it can be a lot more complicated than that. I was recently asked by Success Magazine, “How do you handle the haters?” My response is in the March/April 2020 edition of Success Magazine. In this episode, Rosanne is going to interview me about that article, and we’re going to give a summary of the article and take a real deep dive on the three points that I made. We also use the topic of politics to explore how we could potentially get to a place where we are truly having a respectful dialogue that solves problems.

Last week an article I contributed on "Strength Training for Women- Why Women & Men Should Not Follow The Same Plan" was published. On Fruitloops Episode 11 Beth and Wendy discuss the life, crimes and victims of Timonthy WIlson Spencer, AKA The Southside Strangler. This case is notable as the first case in the US where DNA was used to convict a serial killer. Timothy Wilson Spencer was convicted of raping and strangling four women over 11 weeks in 1987. There was very little circumstantial evidence and Spencer did not confess. Then DNA tests linked semen from the crime scenes with Spencer's blood. Most of Spencer's victims were killed while he was living at a Richmond halfway house after being released from a state prison, where he had served three years of a 10-year sentence for burglary. The slayings took place on weekends when Mr. Spencer was signed out of the halfway house. STATS Victims: 5 murder victims and 9 rape victims Span of Crimes 1984, 1987 to 1988 Venue: Arlington and Richmond VA. [cherry_row] [cherry_col size_md="12"] Take a run with Ultra Stories as we discuss the true story of how the Leadville Trail 100-Mile Endurance Run was founded. In Part 2 of our interview with Dale "Sasquatch" Perry, we discuss Jim Butera.. the founder and original Race Director of the LT100. Jim was a well known Colorado race director in the early 1980s. He created the now defunct Colorado Ultra Club and the Moosejaw Ultra; and was the man who's dream and vision for a 100-mile race in Colorado's mountains got Leadville off the ground. Post interview, "Sherpa" John Lacroix and Hollis Lyman of HPRS bring it all together with hopes that the honest history of our sport can be preserved for generations to come. Show Links:Excerpt from October 1983 Ultrarunning Magazine - Leadville 100's first race report written by Race Director Jim Butera. Excerpt from October 1984 Ultrarunning Magazine - Mentions Jim Butera as founder and race director working in cooperation with Chlouber. Dave Combs April 1996 Cal 50 Race Report where he says, "The guy behind me came up and passed, and I just tagged along behind him toward the start/finish area. He was an interesting guy--Jim Butera, the founder of the Leadville 100." 5280 Magazine Article from June/July 2005 written by Chris McDougall talking about Ken Chlouber in detail while only briefly mentioning Jim Butera, yet discusses Jim and Ken's chance meeting in a Denver shoe store. Listed the year Ken moved to Leadville and started working in the mines as 1976. Sue Norwood's 2006 Leadville 100 Race Report which states "Jim Butera came up with an idea to put the town back on the map" and "Jim's idea of a trail ultra marathon that would start in Leadville, go out to the ghost town of Winfield, and return to Leadville started in 1983 with 45 runners and has mushroomed 24 years later into a popular, internationally-known race with over 500 participants. Jim was the first LT100 race director and still runs in the race; he is entered this year." --2010 Lifetime Fitness purchases Leadville Race Series-- --October 2012; Jim Butera Passes away and the story begins to change-- Leadville Herald Democrat from August 2013 reposting of an excerpt from the 1983 Herald Democrat which lists Ken Chlouber as a race sponsor, but Jim Butera as the "coordinator." Leadville Herald Democrat from August 8, 2013 where Jim Feistner (a 1984 Finisher of the event) wrote a letter to the editor to correct a report that the LT100 was started by Merilee Maupin; and he states, "The Leadville Trail 100 race came to be in 1983 and was the dream of founder and race director Jim Butera." --2013 Lifetime Fitness allows the Leadville Trail 100 to grow beyond it's means, starts almost 200 more runners then permits will allow, and chaos ensues-- Leadville Herald Democrat from October 2013 mentioning Jim Butera as coming "up with the idea of an ultra race in the Colorado Mountains, which became the Leadville Trail 100." --In the aftermath of 2013, Lifetime Fitness decides to go back to the races roots, celebrating Ken Chlouber as the sole founder, and use this marketing ploy as a way to save face and regain lost participants-- Trailrunner Magazine Article from February 24, 2014 written by Yitka Winn where she states Ken Chlouber "co-founded the LT100 with Colorado Ultra Club’s then-president Jim Butera." Yitka has since been blackballed in Leadville due to Ken's anger over her writing this. Trailrunner Magazine from a September 12, 2014 article written by Garett Graubins "True Grit: The Man Who Founded Leadville." Article lists 1974 as the year Chlouber moved to Leadville, contradicting the 2005 article written by McDougall that states 1976. Article also points out where Chlouber calls the Governor of Colorado "a dickhead" and his disparaging nickname for Dean Karnazes, "O-fer." No mention anywhere of Jim Butera and is the first time Jim has been completely erased from the history. May 24, 2016 Daily News from UltraRunnerPodcast which points towards the October 1984 Edition of Ultrarunning Magazine. In the comments from URPs daily news someone writes, "Interesting to read the copy of the Ultrarunning Magazine from 1984. I see in the Trail section of the Ultrarunning Calendar on page 58 it shows Jim Butera of the Colorado Ultra Club as the contact/director of the Leadville Trail 100." 2017 Hinsdale County Site Development Report mentioning LT100 being started by both Jim Butera and Ken Chlouber. 2017 Leadville Trail 100 Runner's Manual by Lifetime Fitness... In his open letter to runners, Ken Chlouber lists himself and Marilee as the founders of the event in 1982 (prior to the mine closing and instead of 1983) and makes no mention of Jim Butera. January 4, 2018 article for REI Co-op Journal completely void of any mention of Jim Butera, and states "That's when Chlouber had an idea, one potentially grand enough to put Leadville on the map: "What about a 100-mile race?" Further removing Jim as the founder and visionary for the 100 mile run. Also note that it says, "The first race in 1983 had 49 entrants, 10 of whom managed to cross the finish line. Among them was Chlouber himself, who traded his shovel and dynamite for sneakers and trail shoes." The race had 44 starters (not 49) and Ken Chlouber does not appear in the official results (see 1983 Ultrarunning Magazine excerpt above).
