Though he has been making rhymes since he was young, he has only relatively recently started using his verses for the good of sharing his faith. His 2017 EP titled, “Captive” set the tone for his positive message of his hope in God. After a few more singles and EP's, he eventually released his first full length album titled “Stained Glass Thoughts” in 2020. In 2021, he has released two singles (one of which is featured on this episode) that reflect on the difference between really living for the faith that he proclaims and just acting the part. Huge shoutout to Billy James' crew ("The Section") for showing up on YouTube and really celebrating his music. Loved seeing them support one of their own, and ya'll def need to check out their music as well. There are some audio issues in the middle of the episode, but the content is definitely worth a listen regardless.Song featured in this episode:Music From Friends Theme song - Alec Sullivan"Façade" - Billy James"Going Through It" - Billy James (feat. Her love of music began as a toddler, and was nourished throughout her childhood when she joined a traveling chorus. Though she stepped away from that love after the tragic loss of her mother when she was just 17, she started releasing music in 2019 and has been crushing it ever since. This “Conscious Pop Artist” not only addresses a range of emotions, thoughts, fears, and hopes in her music, but she uses her platform to give back to many non-profits that deal with those struggling in the same ways. Groups like “Girl UP,” “Peace Over Violence,” “Red Cross Lebanon,” and “Be An Elf” are just some of the organizations that she has contributed too. As far as accolades go, she has been featured in more music publications, podcasts, and radio shows than I can count. In 2020 was the Vox Pop Winner (Voice of the People) at the Independent Music Awards in the Holiday Category for her song called “Holidazed & Confused.” Lastly, her music video for “Anxiety” has been nominated as an Official Selection at the 2021 Berlin Lift-off International Film Festival.A great conversation with Nadia about her music, and the healing it has provided for her (and others) in difficult times. She started playing the piano at 6, was writing her own songs by age 12, and then found herself in a metal band that was started at a talent show in High School. That passion for music would take her to Berklee College of Music where she finished Cum Laude and graduated in just two years. Her first EP, “Can't Refuse,” was released shortly after graduation in 2016, and was a tribute to much of the folk influences from her time in college. After a series of singles, she released her newest album last month (which is actually called, “Self Titled”). We get to see her pop side with that album, and how she feels about all her past relationships. She has been interviewed in countless music publications, featured on 95.5 WBRU and on John Shea's show for indie artists called, Almost Famous, on 95.9 WATD, and she has either won or been the finalist in several New England music competitions and award shows. It seems like she is always playing a live show somewhere in New England so you have no excuse for not seeing her play.Huge thanks to Lainey for taking time out of her busy live show/album release schedule to come on the show!I am also super thankful for her playlist suggestion of “Favorite Female Artists” for this week. The single, “New Year's Resolutions” was the first self produced single from the band and set off a series of singles in 2020, most of which would become part of their first full length album titled, “These Are Our Years.” They have since added a keyboardist to the group, which is allowing them to explore the 80's pop sound, like what you hear on the song, “Temperamental.”I really appreciated that all the guys stopped by the interview—even with all the technical difficulties. With two albums and a few singles, their music is the perfect blend of those unmistakable guitar riffs from that era, with catchy modern lyrics and vocals. Building off their own success and knowledge about the music industry, they started a record label called Odd Brothers Music Group and are helping other artists get their music out. He made the decision to be a pop star at the age of 5, and has worked hard to make that the reality ever since. After breaking on to the NYC music scene through a short stent in a boy band, his talent quickly caught the attention of several producers, writers and record labels in the industry. Those connections turned into several collaborations that would help formalize this own work, and would allow him to work with other artists to release their music. HIis single titled, “I Don't Mind,” off his first EP was heard on the Hip-Hop radio station WBLS 107.5 in New York. After moving to Canada, his first single titled “Show Out” released shorty after his transition there, was another standout hit, being nominated for an Indie Music Award in 2018. He has steadily been releasing hit singles in 2021 which will come together to make his next EP early next year. This show had to be pre-recorded before it aired on WNTN 1550 AM on Saturday night. Instead of the usual edited replay that is posted, this is that interview in its entirety. Huge thanks to Jae Cabrera for being able to record the interview in advance. The three Matt version of the band release two EP's in 2013 titled, “Land & Sea” and “Two Birds.” Those EP's unknowingly began their musical identity as a band that uses imagery in nature as a metaphor for love and life. The group of three would eventually add Allison and Rory to the mix and then in 2019, began releasing a series of singles that would be on their first full album. Though that album, “Little Wild,” was released in the pandemic in 2020, it didn't slow them down. Music from that album was featured on CBC in Canada and when they weren't able to ply the planned live shows, they continued on with a virtual tour where they were joined by other local bands in cities from around the region. They were also featured in the Blue Sky Music Festival in 2020 which was also virtual. That album titled, “Free Times,” is reminiscent of classic folk which has been described by some as straddling the line between Cat Stevens and The Eagles in a fold-rock sound. For years he has been performing many of his original songs—and covers—at open mic nights, and on his YouTube channel. The first song featured on the show is a rough cut of what will be the first single off of Dany's album, coming out this summer. Her 1st EP title, “Don't Turn On The Light,” caught the attention of record labels and other musicians which allowed her to open for acts such as Lisa Loeb. Her second EP titled, “The Chase,” was even more successful and disturbed by a branch of Sony. The next year saw the release of her first full length album, “1440,” which was a big hit and has some of her most streamed songs like, “Is It Okay?” and “Warrior". I think it is with her second album, “Colors,” that she was able to explore more of her fun and vibrant musical personality. She has a Christmas EP, a couple of singles, has had her music appear on TV networks like TLC, and has been played on Sirius radio.”This the last show with the theme of Favorite Childhood Hits. Recorded at The Recording Co-op, an old barn that had been converted into a beautiful music studio, She Is Free received critical acclaim. Brian Varneke of Deli Magazine called it "a deeply personal record full of reflective poetry and messages of love," and Music Box Pete described Dobbins' sound as "derived within the folk and country mindset, with a realistic and down home sound that transports you directly to Nashville by way of Boston." For Dobbins, it was a personal declaration that fear would no longer hold her back, and that she had been set free to live with passion, expectation for great things, and love.Dobbins' sophomore album, There Is Light, contains remarkably honest songs that capture seasons of both hardship and joy, but hold onto the hope that light will always illuminate and overpower darkness. The songs range a variety of genres, incorporating elements of folk, pop, and country, and dreamlike qualities that connect them all. This second album is a clear evolutionary step for Dobbins, with increased depth and range vocally, lyrically, and musically that together make her unique way of describing personal relationships and life challenges even more powerful and compelling. Full of songs that explore the intimate relationship of despair and hope with the human spirit, There Is Light reveals Dobbins as more seasoned in both life and her artistry. Nominated for Album of the Year at The 2019 New England Music Awards, the album is currently available on all digital streaming platforms."The theme for this episode is Songs That Inspire. Katie came up with that theme because it reflects her motto of “Be You, Be Brave, Be Free” and is throughout all of her music. The band’s first full-length album, 2016’s Hestia, dealt with the idea of home and what it can mean, from acceptance and comfort to solitude and loneliness. Now, Empty Atlas returns with their sophomore full-length album, Kairos, available June 12, 2020, in partnership with Carved From Stone Records. Smith calls the album “the other side of the coin” from the band’s previous full-length.
