Welcome to the episode 33 of "Women In The Music Industry", a podcast that shines a spotlight on the remarkable women who are breaking barriers and making their mark in an industry that has long been dominated by men. My guest today is none other than singer, songwriter, and one half of the multiple award-winning Vancouver-based alternative rock band “DEAR ROUGE”, Danielle McTaggart! For over 10 years now Dear Rouge, the alternative rock duo of Drew and Danielle McTaggart, have been winning fans over consistently and hitting new career heights. Following their major label debut record, Black To Gold, the couple picked up multiple Top 10 radio hits, a SOCAN Songwriting Prize, and a Juno for Breakthrough Group of the Year. Dear Rouge continued their upward trajectory with their sophomore album PHASES (Deluxe) which included the lead single Boys & Blondes and the #1 Alternative Rock hit, Live Through The Night. Along the way, they opened for artists like Phantogram, Lights, and Our Lady Peace, and wowed crowds on festival stages from coast to coast with their energetic and dynamic live performances. The band continued to solidify their presence in the Canadian music landscape with their third full length record Spirit. The record spawned the #1 hit Fake Fame, and the band picked up an Indie Award for Group of the Year at Canadian Music Week, before a packed summer of touring that included opening for Vance Joy and a tour supporting Canadian legends Metric. All the tracks from Spirit, along with the band's previous singles have seen heavy recurrent radio airplay, leading to Dear Rouge being the most played Canadian band on alternative radio in 2022. The band then returned to the studio with acclaimed producer Gus van Go (The Beaches, The Stills). The duo's new single Goon is out now. If you are enjoying this video series, please rate/review/subscribe/tell everyone about it. Every little bit helps. Instagram: @daniellemctaggart & @dearrouge Web: www.dearrouge.com

My guest is an award-winning actress and songwriter, Frida Farrell who stars in the true-life drama about sex trafficking called Apartment 407, now playing on Amazon Prime here in the United States and Canada – soon will be coming to her fans in Europe. For Farrell this is her story, she helped write it and even wrote the opening music for the film. The Swedish actress was rewarded for her creative efforts as Apartment 407 won international acclaim with multiple awards from all over Europe and the United States including an “Indie Award for the Best Picture at the prestigious Raindance festival in London. For Farrell, the awards and international acclaim have been appreciated but the real payoff from the film has been a large number of women who have contacted her or organizations to share their personal stories about sex trafficking or other types of abuse. She has been very gratified that her film and her own personal story of sex trafficking have brought the issue of sexual abuse to light for so many women. Farrell like all of us has been in her home in Sweden riding out the worldwide COVID 19 pandemic. But during that time she has been working on several projects including a new album that will be out soon and looking for the next TV or film project to take on. While we wait for the new album catch Farrell along with Nick Mancuso in Contract Killers now on Amazon Prime Video. The film brought her the honor of the “Breakout Female Star” award at the Orlando Film Festival and other competitions worldwide. The film established Ferrell as a true leading lady and a badass action star. Maia Toll is the author of The Illustrated Herbiary which won an Indie Award, a Nautilus Award, and has been on the Pacific Northwest bestseller list. While published in 2018, the seeds for The Illustrated Herbiary and the other books in The Wild Wisdom Collection (The Illustrated Bestiary, October 2019 and The Illustrated Crystallary, Sept. 2020) were planted years earlier when Maia apprenticed with a traditional healer in Ireland where she spent extensive time studying the growing cycles of plants, the alchemy of medicine making, and the psychology of working with humans and illness.
Joining me for this episode's online chat is one of my favourite Australian authors, Toni Jordan. Toni has worked as a molecular biologist, quality control chemist, TAB operator and door-to-door aluminium siding salesperson. She holds a bachelor of science in physiology and a PhD in creative arts and is the author of five novels. Her debut, the international best-seller Addition, and the first of hers I read, was longlisted for the Miles Franklin award and won the Indie Award for best first book. This was followed by Fall Girl, Nine Days, Our Tiny, Useless Hearts and most recently The Fragments. I asked Toni numerous questions about The Fragments, a sumptuous literary mystery (which I wanted so badly to be non fiction) and we discussed her cocktail game, which is strong my friends, very strong! The pairings: Exploded View by Carrie Tiffany In the late 1970s, in the forgotten outer suburbs, a girl has her hands in the engine of a Holden. A sinister new man has joined the family. He works as a mechanic and operates an unlicensed repair shop at the back of their block. The family is under threat. The girl reads the Holden workshop manual for guidance. She resists the man with silence, then with sabotage. She fights him at the place where she believes his heart lives – in the engine of the car. Toni paired a favourite classic cocktail, the Negroni, which she makes in batches and uses the good vermouth but the less good gin (!) with this sparse, bitter and intense story. The Dictionary Of Lost Words by Pip Williams Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the ‘Scriptorium', a garden shed in Oxford where her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Esme's place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word ‘bondmaid' flutters to the floor. Esme rescues the slip and stashes it in an old wooden case that belongs to her friend, Lizzie, a young servant in the big house. Esme begins to collect other words from the Scriptorium that are misplaced, discarded or have been neglected by the dictionary men. They help her make sense of the world. Over time, Esme realises that some words are considered more important than others, and that words and meanings relating to women's experiences often go unrecorded. While she dedicates her life to the Oxford English Dictionary, secretly, she begins to collect words for another dictionary: The Dictionary of Lost Words. Toni chose to pair this beautiful, feminist re-telling of history with another classic cocktail, an Old Fashioned. Although she loves good whiskey she doesn't use the good whiskey here, any old whiskey will do!
Suzanne Daniel won the Indie Award for a Debut Novel with her humorous and caring story of a young girl being brought up by two very different grandmothers in 'Allegra in Three Parts'.

Author, editor and publisher, Hilary McPhee, joins Mel Cranenburgh to discuss her new memoir Other People’s Houses. Fleeing the aftermath of a failed marriage, Hilary began the project in the Middle East where she had travelled to write about a member of the Hashemite royal family. The book that emerged from this was not the book she had anticipated but instead became a welcome exploration of the changes that she underwent at this time in her life. The result is, as one reviewer notes, ‘inspiring’.Mel is then joined by Lucy Treloar, author of Salt Creek (2015), winner of the Indie Award for Best Debut, the ABIA Matt Richell Award and the Dobbie Award, and shortlisted for prizes including the Miles Franklin Literary Award and the UK's Walter Scott Prize. Her latest book, Wolfe Island, has been met with similar acclaim with The Age describing it as ‘deeply moving’. Set on a dying island sinking into the wind-lashed Chesapeake Bay, the main protagonist, Kitty Hawke, confronts a fraught world - one that threatens all of us - with flight, exile and bewilderment.
