Interview by Kris PetersPost punk/goth outfit She Wants Revenge hit pay dirt with their first ever single Tear You Apart back in 2005, a song that somehow made it to the ears of Lady Gaga, who in turn insisted producers of a TV show she was working on called American Horror Story: Hotel included the track in its soundtrack. This early leg up introduced She Wants Revenge to an instant global market and served them well over their debut self-titled album and follow ups This Is Forever and Valleyheart before disbanding in 2012.2022 saw the band reunite and start producing music again, with their ensuing success setting She Wants Revenge down a touring path that sees the band finally travel to Australia for the first time this October.HEAVY caught up with guitarist Justin Warfield to delve deeper."Dude, it's like... it is a running joke amongst the band, and I'm sure any Aussie fans by now, that if we were to have announced these shows no-one would believe it anyway," he laughed. "Every time we do it gets cancelled. So, Thomas Froggatt - who is the bass player in She Wants Revenge and started in the original line-up as guitar player - he is from Byron Bay and Melbourne and he grew up between the two, so when I told him the dates we were coming he said 'yeah, yeah right, I'll believe it when I see it (laughs). And, so, it's really exciting. It sucks to dealing stereotypes but I just have to be honest. Whenever I can go to a place where the culture has inspired me or us as a band and as individuals, it's exciting. It's a place where there's so much great history and so much great music and so much culture and for me as a lifelong surfer to get to the Gold Coast is unbelievable. I grew up watching... I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to surfing and some of my absolute heroes of the sport are from there and I've been looking at photos and videos forever. So the idea that not only do I get to go and play shows for audiences that probably thought we would never come - plus we're a band that has broken up twice before - so for the people that have been with us the whole time and grown old with us and are like 'oh wow, they're really coming', or for the new people who have discovered us from a soundcheck or Pandora or Spotify or a playlist... the fact that they get to experience us and what we do live and we get to share three nights of music with our fans old and new... we get to see the culture and the cities that are so exciting to us and the fact that I just get to surf... It's going to be outrageous."In the full interview, Justin talks more about what to expect from the tour, preparing for a run of shows so far from home, what they are expecting from us, their breakthrough single and being noticed by Lady Gaga, what that meant for the band's career, the chances of a new album and more.

Kevin from ValleyHeart comes to the podcast today talking all about the band's newest album "Heal My Head." We dive into the idea of the album and how it can be seen as a progressive move from their previous works. Then we dive deep into the concept of buffering and how it can lead into some incredible ideas. But the meat of the podcast comes when we go into the songs "The Numbers" and "Your Favorite Jacket." Their concepts of feeling pressure based on age, comparison, and Kevin's great allegory of plants will have you say "this album speaks to me." So dont miss it. his conversation with Kevin Klein from Valleyheart is a great look at how a modern artist sees the landscape today, and in what ways some things always stay the same in the midst of constant change. The one trend that continues to grow is the amount of control artists have over more and more layers of their art form, and why having clear vision and identifying constraints seems to matter more than ever. Valleyheart has a brand new Tooth & Nail album called Heal My Head out now, and its a terrific listen. We had the pleasure of interviewing Valleyheart over Zoom video!Massachusetts trio VALLEYHEART, who craft dynamic, cinematic alternative rock earmarked by lyrical eloquence and sweet melodies, recently released their second album Heal My Head, via Tooth & Nail.Valleyheart continue to build an emotional bond with audiences everywhere. Following the 2017 Nowadays EP, they deepened this connection with their debut album, Everyone I've Ever Loved, in 2018. “Friends In The Foyer” eclipsed 877K Spotify streams as the band took home “Rock Artist of the Year” at the 2019 Boston Music Awards. On its heels, the Scenery EP arrived to widespread acclaim. FLOOD noted, “they explore powerful, accessible soundscapes in an adequately sized package,” and Substream Magazine hailed them as “equal parts boldness and beauty.” Throughout 2020 and 2021, they assembled what would become Heal My Head at sessions at The Halo Studio in Portland, ME with longtime collaborator and co-producer Kevin Billingslea and at The Record Company in Boston, MA. Kevin Billingslea and Kevin Klein co-engineered, co-produced, and co-mixed the album, with a portion of the record being self-produced by Klein at his home studio. We want to hear from you! "Borrelia Borealis", a film by writer/director/actress Kathryne Isabelle Easton, will have it's world premiere at the 2021 LaFemme International Film Festival, running October 14-17 held both virtually and at the Regal Cinema at LA Live. Easton is a highly regarded filmmaker in the entertainment community whose previous work has garnered her such prestigious honors as double Academy Nicholl quarterfinalist for her scripts "Happy Birthday, Ray!" and "Hemorrhage." She directed the episodic series “Key Question” for Legendary Studios at Geek and Sundry, and she just wrapped principal photography directing her second independent feature film, “Valleyheart.” "Borrelia Borealis" is a vividly lush, mystically haunting take on love and desire during an unprecedented US lockdown. In the midst of a global pandemic and raging California wildfires, Beth, who suffers from life-threatening late-stage chronic Lyme disease, is forced to confront her personal demons in quarantine. After a particularly brutal day, she answers a random video call from a mysterious man, and soon an unlikely romance breaks open a boundless cosmic world through astral projection. Easton has been a multi-hyphenate filmmaker for more than a decade. With her equally talented husband Matt Fore (Director of Photography/ Editor/Producer), the two established Abhorrent Behavior, a full service production company that has produced dozens of award-winning short films, web series, music videos, and two feature films since 2017. Sometimes you just have to do it yourself ... as long as it's in conjunction with someone else. In this episode, Leslie talks with Actress/Writer/Director Kathryne Isabelle Easton about developing her own horror franchise, her award winning short film Borrelia Borealis, how to navigate Hollywood as a woman and still stay true to your vision, pay inequity and much more.More about Kathryne:Kathryne Isabelle Easton attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City after studying theater for many years as a child in Syracuse, NY. She moved to Los Angeles to pursue filmmaking soon after graduating, and quickly found that the game of Hollywood is a very grating one unless you are creating some of your own material and getting your voice out there. She started a production company, Abhorrent Behavior, and directed, wrote, produced and starred in many shorts, music videos, and several web series before directing her first feature: a romantic drama, “Borrelia Borealis” in 2020. She secured a distribution deal through Freestyle Media and it releases on VOD platforms January 18th, 2022. In 2021, she directed her second feature, a gritty LA noir thriller, “Valleyheart,” and is currently is post production. She has worked steadily as an actress in LA over the years as well as selling scripts as a writer and placing on the Academy Nicholl quarter finals list two times. She has trended on the Blcklist with high scores as well as making it to the semis for Final Draft Big Break and second round at Austin. She directed Key Question for Legendary Digital Studios at the Alpha network, starring Marisha Ray, and she is currently writing a soon-to-be horror film franchise, “Sacred Feminine.” She resides in Los Angeles, enjoys a myriad of caffeinated beverages, and is currently looking for representation for her multi-hyphenate career.

So often, as independent artists, we strive and long for the day we "make it" in music. This vague goal is usually tied to the dream of having a record label offer us the holy grail of "musiciandom": the hallowed RECORD DEAL. Yet, the life of a signed artist can look relatively indistinguishable from that of an independent one. In this episode, Kevin Klein of Valleyheart sat down with me and shared the insight he gained while being an independent artist for years, getting signed to Rise Records (Pvris, Of Mice & Men, Memphis May Fire, etc.) and now returning to the independent market. Kevin and I enjoyed a casual yet intentional conversation with a lot to unpack! Context: This recording occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kevin had recently been stuck outside of the country due to the lockdown occurring during his vacationSupport the show (http://patreon.com/jonhayes_official)

Kevin Klein is the lead singer and guitarist for the band, Valleyheart. Kevin is a multi-talented musician who has been on a wild musical journey to get to where he is today. Starting out playing in a Christian metalcore band, Exiting the Fall, Kevin eventually veered into more chill outlets as his interests in music evolved. Eventually those efforts would become the Salem, MA-based band, Valleyheart.During this conversation, Kevin and I dig into his spiritual roots and how they have influenced, defined, and evolved during his life and musical ventures. The conversation also features a bit about the realities of booking DIY tours - playing not only in basements, but in restaurants and boxing rings as well. There’s also a great meditation or two on the influence Sufjan Stevens has had on both my life and Kevin’s life. This is a fun and thoughtful conversation that I know you will love. AND you get to hear some beautiful music throughout. Valleyheart will be on tour with My Epic this month and into June. The band will embark on a summer run of dates with Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - you can check out their tour dates here!MUSIC NOTE:- This week you got to hear tunes from the debut Valleyheart album, “Everyone I’ve Ever Loved,” which was released on December 14 through Rise Records. - Valleyheart is a brilliant rock band the presents each song with expertly layered lush atmospheres and soundscapes while retaining a perfect amount of raw emotion.
