I was a teenager when I picked up the guitar, and suddenly, I had the one thing I'd been looking for to craft the songs I'd been waiting to write. -Sarah Blacker This up-close and personal interview was recorded in my living room with a singer/songwriter who grew up down the street. We met when she was a teenager…and a friend of my daughter Colleen's. Years later, Sarah Blacker continues doing what she loves best: bringing comfort and joy to audiences large and small as a dynamic live performer. Heralded by the Huffington Post for her “infectious, well-written songs,” Sarah was named the 2024 Female Performer of the Year by the New England Music Awards. But there's so much more to Sarah's story because she harnesses the healing power of music as a Board-Certified Music Therapist and LMHC or Licensed Mental Health Counselor. Explains Sarah: “Listening to music can open up neuro-pathways. Music is magic. It gets us high. Sometimes, when I'm sitting there with Alzheimer's patients, my mind is blown, and my heart is exposed because I know that music is what unlocked a patient's memory.” A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Sarah discovered music therapy during a tour of the school and realized that this academic path encompassed everything she had always loved about music. A survivor of life on the road as a musician, Sarah misses the audience but not the grueling schedule of an independent musician. “I lived on Dunkin Donuts for days, all for the love of music and those glorious moments when I got to be on stage, pouring my heart out, trying to connect with an audience.” The daughter of two music lovers, Sarah says that music was always playing at her house. “My dad had the greatest music collection of all time, everything from Paul Simon and Pink Floyd to Tubular Bells, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Seals & Crofts. My mom would make up her own silly songs. It was a creative household.” As a teen, Sarah's musical role models were all- female, including Tori Amos, Joni Mitchell, Fiona Apple and Paula Cole. Learning to play the guitar is what completed Sarah Blacker as an artist. Says Sarah: “It was like opening the gates to everywhere I ever wanted to go.” For an inspiring 24-minute musical journey, just hit that download button. #music #musictherapy #songwriter #singer

Monique Byrne and Andy Rogovin perform moving and inspirational songs that are sometimes joyful, sometimes wistful, and oftentimes, poignant, and that reflect a mutual passion for life, family and humanity. Their intimately blended vocal harmonies are mixed with an expressive and unique instrumental style that is best described as "a banjo-guitar romance." Crowes Pasture's style of intimate and soulful folk transports and connects listeners through universal experiences in their “skillfully crafted, emotional songwriting” (Chris Eastburn, award-winning composer).Crowes Pasture has made waves with two EPs and three full-length albums in just six-years time. Their CD, "Slow It Down", was released in June 2019 at the legendary Club Passim. Since its release, the title track earned Crowes Pasture a #1 song, and the album debuted at #5 on the Folk Alliance International Charts. Since the release of their first album, "Edge of America," the duo has had eight Top 10 Songs on the Folk Charts, including "Take Back the Red White and Blue" (January 2022), their cover of Mary Gauthier's "Mercy Now" (June 2019), and the timely and topical song, "Quarantine" (January 2021). Over the past few years, Crowes Pasture has performed at a number of renowned east coast music venues including Club Passim, Shalin Liu Performance Center, Rockwood Music Hall, The Bull Run, and Circle of Friends Coffeehouse and has been a supporting act for The Small Glories and The Kennedys. The duo has been twice honored with nominations as “Roots Act of the Year” by the New England Music Awards (2019 and 2022) and as “Americana Artist of the Year” by the Boston Music Awards (2019). They were named finalists for Best Group/Duo in the 2020 International Acoustic Music Awards, and for Best Group/Duo in the 2021 IAMAs, for their song “A Virtue and a Call”. The duo has toured recently throughout Southern Ontario and Quebec, and is currently recording their third full length album with award-winning producer Eric Lichter of Dirt Floor Studios. The duo takes its name from the salt marsh and tidal flats known as Crowes Pasture, hidden away on the north side of Cape Cod, where the ocean tides recede twice a day to reveal intricate patterns on the shifting sands. This recurring cycle of creation and discovery evokes their own musical journey.https://crowespastureduo.comThanks for listening for more information or to listen to other podcasts or watch YouTube videos click on this link >https://thetroutshow.com/

Frank Viele's brand of New England blues rock tugs at the heartstrings, pulling the listener on a surprise journey that transcends genre.Yet even as he's racked up accolades over the past 7 years — including New England Music Awards for Album of the Year, Male Performer of the Year, Songwriter of The Year (X2), and Live Act of The Year for gutsy, gritty tracks like “Broken Love Song” and “‘Til The Bourbon's All Gone” — he's rarely paused to savor the moment before moving on to yet another tour, album, or collaboration. It wasn't until the pandemic hit in early 2020 and he was forced to hunker down that Viele realized that time itself was the world's most precarious, yet precious, resource. At that time, Viele embarked on a writing-and-recording journey with Jimmy Nutt (Jason Isbell, American Aquarium, The Dead South) and James LeBlanc (Travis Tritt, Will Hoge, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Dylan LeBlanc, Kid Rock, Rascal Flatts) of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Within this co-writing collaborative partnership, Viele approached each new song slowly, intentionally, and with an open mind, challenging himself to transcend the limits of genre and industry expectations. In 2021, a handful songs that he had started recording in Connecticut, and finished at Nutthouse Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, were brought to life in the 2021 EP “Time Is A Thief.” This EP won him the coveted New England Music Award for “Songwriter of The Year” for the second time and acted as a prequel to Viele's upcoming full-length 2023 album. In January 2023, the first track off Viele's forthcoming, 13-song album completed in Nutthouse Recording Studios, “Hearts We Left Behind”, came out in January of 2023 and was featured on Boston's Country 102.5 as their “Song Of The Week”. “Hearts” continues to receive critical acclaim citing Viele's strength as a storyteller and his signature vocal delivery. The “magic dust” they are referring to has been gathered from experiences on the road and in venues across the country. Viele built his sound and narrated his journey while constantly touring the United States, playing hundreds of shows each year and sharing the stage with artists such as John Waite, Jeffrey Gaines, Lee DeWyze, Zach Myers of Shinedown, Bob Marley's Wailers, Howie Day, Xavier Rudd, Ingrid Michaelson, Tony Lucca, Pat McGee, and Blues Traveler, among others, since the release of his first solo album in 2015.But Frank Viele's musical journey starts long before that… Fondly listening to his grandmother play piano as a child and later reinvigorated as a teenager inspired by his older brother's taste in music and an acoustic guitar he left behind when he moved to the West Coast, Viele developed a deep appreciation for a wide range of genres including rock, blues, folk, and country. He began writing his own music as a teenager and quickly developed a knack for crafting deeply personal and emotive songs that spoke to the human experience. After honing his craft fronting New York City based Jam/Funk/Rock Outfit “Frank Viele & The Manhattan Project”, Viele released his debut solo album “Fall Your Way” in 2015, which was met with critical acclaim including 2 New England Music Awards for Album of The Year and Male Performer of The Year. (On top of the Live Act of The Year Award he had received in 2014).The Album, “What's His Name?” won Frank Viele the New England Music Award for “Songwriter of The Year” which paved this Connecticut musician's path to Muscle Shoals, Alabama where he began the next chapter of his writing and recording journey. Viele's music is characterized not only by his powerful vocals, soulful guitar playing, and poignant lyrics, but also its deep honesty. This is an artist who is not afraid of wearing his heart on his sleeve, and dig deep into the joys and struggles of life. He has been praised for his ability to blend elements of folk, blues, and
Charlie Rockwood Farr and Lynne Taylor are singer songwriters and multi-instrumentalists who first met while on tour with Alt-country-rock band, Liz Frame and the Kickers in 2011. They went on to work together in the Lynne Taylor Band and Halo and the Harlots, finally landing in 2018 as Rockwood Taylor, an edgy Americana duo that calls on a wide range of influences from Woody Guthrie to John Prine, Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt, Nina Simone to Patsy Cline to Patti Smith. The result is a collection of rootsy, gutsy, honest songs that transcend boundaries, taking the listener on a gritty journey through our collective human experience. Based in Massachusetts, they have toured throughout the Northeast US as far west as Ohio, and as far south as North Carolina. They released their first EP, Finding Home, in April 2019, which was nominated for Album of the Year by the New England Music Awards.

Recorded at The Recording Co-op, an old barn that had been converted into a beautiful music studio, She Is Free received critical acclaim. Brian Varneke of Deli Magazine called it "a deeply personal record full of reflective poetry and messages of love," and Music Box Pete described Dobbins' sound as "derived within the folk and country mindset, with a realistic and down home sound that transports you directly to Nashville by way of Boston." For Dobbins, it was a personal declaration that fear would no longer hold her back, and that she had been set free to live with passion, expectation for great things, and love.Dobbins' sophomore album, There Is Light, contains remarkably honest songs that capture seasons of both hardship and joy, but hold onto the hope that light will always illuminate and overpower darkness. The songs range a variety of genres, incorporating elements of folk, pop, and country, and dreamlike qualities that connect them all. This second album is a clear evolutionary step for Dobbins, with increased depth and range vocally, lyrically, and musically that together make her unique way of describing personal relationships and life challenges even more powerful and compelling. Full of songs that explore the intimate relationship of despair and hope with the human spirit, There Is Light reveals Dobbins as more seasoned in both life and her artistry. Nominated for Album of the Year at The 2019 New England Music Awards, the album is currently available on all digital streaming platforms."The theme for this episode is Songs That Inspire. Katie came up with that theme because it reflects her motto of “Be You, Be Brave, Be Free” and is throughout all of her music. Production Discussion by New England Music Awards
Born in Brussels, Belgium in 1973, Zeke Martin entered the world with a pair of drumsticks in his hands. As child, he had a strong appreciation for diverse musical styles such as Jazz, Funk, Reggae and Rock, and was heavily influenced by his father, the late Stu Martin, who played with Jazz royalty including Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, Charles Mingus, Dave Holland and Quincy Jones to name a few. Now known for his own drumming chops and unique style, Zeke Martin has carved out his own musical path which has led him to create a fresh funk-jazz style that he explores with his band on "The Zeke Martin Project 4" which just won Best Jazz CD at the New England Music Awards. When Zeke and his band join Julie to share their music, it's a hip funky-farm thang.
