As the soccer season rolls on the tables are looking less "normal" with unlikely clubs sitting atop of their leagues. It makes for a fun watch as things could get interesting down the stretch, especially if a recent rumor pans out. The USMNT has had it's camp but it looks as if the young cast will be without one of it's stars thanks to a lingering injury and while the MLS won't officially hand a supporters shield out, it won't stop one MLS club from hoisting one of their own. While we celebrate our 1 year anniversary the USL has decided there won't be pomp and circumstance when it comes to their champion(s). We discuss the lack of a championship in "The Championship" PLUS Champions league is in FULL swing and has some real contenders that need praise. Speaking of praise, Arsenal has seemed to have bought into the new scheme but is this to be expected from now on and can they sustain it? We discuss that and the massive amount of parody within the league especially when it comes to the "big six". MLS playoffs are looking a little more solid and the mid-south will be repped well. Bo (Melson) knows soccer. Brodee Scott and Tim Van Horn sit down for a chat with Memphis' first African-American professional soccer player. A graduate of Germantown High School, Bo was feared for his speed and first touch. Bo talks about his club days and the opportunity to shine nationally for this country. He is very candid about race relations during that time, and he explains why the soccer community is like family. Strong on the ball and big on heart, Bo chose to ply his collegiate trade at then-Memphis State University (10 goals, 8 assists in just 20 games) before a professional career was too good of a choice to turn down. Bo talks about the Memphis Rogues, the Memphis Americans and his goal scoring exploits as a Kangaroo. Thanks to Bo Melson for joining us. In this episode Tim Van Horn chats with former Fort Lauderdale Strikers goalkeeper Steve Zerhusen. Although Steve did not have a long professional career, it was successful and eventful. Steve's soccer story is very similar to one of our previous guests, the late John Houska. Click here for the interview we did with John. In soccer news, the guys recap action in the Premier League, USL Championship & beyond. Memphis 901 FC Sporting Director Tim Howard has indicated an international search will be conducted to find the next full-time Head Coach. Brodee and Tim admit they have no crystal ball, but they toss out a few names who might be candidates (or not) if they do not select Ben Pirmann. Some have a local connection. This week's featured guest goes beyond the 18 yard box. Josh Guidry is still active in the United States military, and he is making a concerted effort to impact soccer at the grassroots level. Brodee and Tim chat with Guidry about how the military and soccer have a very long, special relationship, even providing avenues for potential professional players. Wins would be a great present as we say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to 901 FC Head Coach Tim Mulqueen! Before we go, it is with deep sadness we tell you that friend of the podcast & Memphis Rogues goalkeeper John Houska has passed away this week. He was an aggressive goalkeeper during his amazing career at Loyola University Maryland & was in goal on that historic night vs New York Cosmos, shutting them out 1-0 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Houska was also the face of the team, always taking time to make personal appearances at youth clinics and other events around Memphis. John was still full of that same energy and hope when we recently spoke with him. His personality really shines through in our podcast chat, which you can listen to here. John Houska was 64. Memphis Rogues Goalkeeper John Houska joins Tim Van Horn for a chat about his soccer career. Although the Rogues spent just three North American Soccer League seasons (1978-80) in Memphis, the club left a lasting legacy. Houska is one of the most talented and popular players in franchise history. The Baltimore native was an aspiring baseball player. However, he took his incredible hand-eye coordination to the pitch and became a collegiate soccer star. Houska had a tremendous career at Loyola University Maryland. He was a National Champion & 2nd Team All-American goalkeeper, catching the eyes of pro scouts here and abroad. After being the first draft pick of the Rogues, Houska was tested early. History will show he passed with flying colors against the world class New York Cosmos. John talks to Tim about this and other triumphs. Although it was a happy time, he also shares his biggest regret. We learn about his very tough choice he had to make at age 21. In fact, Houska dishes on a wide range of topics, including the friendships he's maintained with many of his teammates for over 40 years. We thank Memphis Rogues Goalkeeper John Houska for sharing his story. Still no matches at this time, but the world soccer news is far from dull. Brodee Scott and Tim Van Horn will more on this and other leagues in the UK and Europe in the first half of the podcast. No restart date for MLS at this time. Same goes for the USL. However, the league's team owners have approached (through the League) the Players Association about a return to play and a request for "economic relief" from the players. The guys discuss the League's efforts to get back to the pitch. Tim & Brodee will also have injury & transfer news as well. (photo credit: memphisrogues.blogspot.com) Support the show.
