About the Guest: Caroline Tracey is a distinguished writer focusing on topics related to art, literature, environment, and migration in the U.S., the Southwest, Mexico, and borderland regions. Caroline contributes to the Border Chronicle, among other reputable publications such as N1, The Nation, and The Guardian. Not only does she have expertise in English, but she is also trilingual, proficient in Spanish and Russian. Caroline's significant contributions to journalism include winning the 2019 Scoundrel Time Summer Literary Seminars nonfiction contest for her work on migrant deaths in South Texas. With a PhD in geography from UC Berkeley, Caroline is currently working on a book about salt lakes, set to be published by W.W. Norton. Episode Summary: In this episode of "90 Miles from Needles," host Chris Clarke converses with Caroline Tracey, a talented journalist with a focus on the borderlands of the U.S. and Mexico. The discussion revolves around Plan Sonora, a significant energy transition and development initiative in the Mexican state of Sonora, which borders the U.S. state of Arizona. Through this lens, Caroline explores the impacts of renewable and fossil fuel energy developments, such as lithium mining and solar arrays, on both local ecosystems and indigenous communities. Her insights underscore the complex balance between industrial progress and environmental conservation. The episode gives an in-depth look at Plan Sonora's four key components: a major solar array in Rocky Point, the nationalization of lithium mining reserves, an expansive natural gas pipeline project, and logistic developments that aim to transform Sonora into an economic hub. Caroline delves into activism efforts against these developments, particularly highlighting successful campaigns led by environmental groups against the Mexico Pacific's Saguaro Energy Project. By doing so, she paints a vivid picture of the current tensions between commercial ambitions and advocacy for ecological protection and cultural preservation. Key Takeaways: Plan Sonora: This encompasses solar power projects, lithium mining, natural gas pipeline proposals, and logistical developments, transforming Sonora into a critical player in renewable energy. Cross-border Impacts: Renewable energy developments in Mexico cater largely to U.S. demands, raising concerns about "green colonialism." Opposition and Activism: Indigenous communities and environmental activists are actively opposing certain projects due to cultural and environmental implications, most notably the pipeline and terminal proposals along the Gulf of California. Political Dynamics: Recent changes in Mexico's administration and judicial system reform are smoothing the way for energy investment and curtailing environmental regulations. Economic and Environmental Tensions: Despite opportunities for economic growth, critics argue these projects risk damaging vital ecosystems and stripping local communities of benefits. Notable Quotes: "Personally, I increasingly think that enlisting large corporations to do your climate mitigation work is inevitably going to kick you in the butt." - Chris Clarke "They plan to build a couple other solar plants that are of similar size…[in] the Gulf of California." - Caroline Tracey "There are four pipelines that are being developed right now…[raising] economic development to the detriment of people in Mexico." - Caroline Tracey "If indeed we're going to transition to renewable energy, that means first of all, stopping new extraction projects." - Caroline Tracey Resources: Caroline Tracey’s work at the Border Chronicle: https://www.theborderchronicle.com Caroline Tracey’s personal website: https://cetracey.com Ballenas ó Gas in Spanish: https://ballenasogas.org/ and in English: https://whalesorgas.org/ Article by By Martha Pskowski, Inside Climate News, and Alejandra Martinez, the Texas Tribune on opposition to the Saguaro Pipeline in Van Horn, TX: https://insideclimatenews.org/news/20122023/west-texans-rally-against-cross-border-pipeline/ Stay tuned to "90 Miles from Needles" for more enlightening discussions on desert protection and environmental advocacy.Become a desert defender!: https://90milesfromneedles.com/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For The Record

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 28, 2024 57:23

In this episode of For The Record, we sit down with Chad Van Horn, PA-C, better known as "Needle Daddy," a Physician Associate based in Fort Lauderdale and owner of Icon Aesthetics and Wellness. Over the last 8 years, Chad has authentically created his unique brand to combine his larger-than-life personality with his artistic eye and exceptional clinical skills. His Needle Daddy persona spills over to his practice, Icon Aesthetics, and has helped it to rapidly grow with a big expansion on the way! How does he do it? Chad's journey to aesthetics wasn't a straight path - following the 2007-2008 housing crash, he made the bold decision to transition from flooring sales to medicine. Initially pursuing PA school with dreams of orthopedics, he found his way into aesthetics through a small IV clinic where he demonstrated his natural talent for both patient care and business growth, scaling the practice from $15-25K to 10x that amount in just three years. Today, as the founder of his own practice, Icon Aesthetics, Chad has crafted a unique approach that sets him apart in the competitive South Florida market. His practice maintains a 75/25 split between aesthetics and hormone/weight loss services, with an unwavering focus on quality over quantity. Unlike many in the industry, he's built his business without external funding or loans, forcing a strategic approach to growth and vendor partnerships. He's got to be smart with his money- constantly watching his COGS, his profitability, and his cost to bring in and retain patients. Throughout this episode, Chad shares several priceless insights: 1. The Power of Authenticity: As a self-described "card-carrying metrosexual," Chad encourages practitioners to double down on their personality quirks rather than trying to fit a conventional mold. 2. Patient Care Philosophy: His approach emphasizes genuine connections and honest conversations, even if it means recommending a plastic surgeon over injectables when appropriate. 3. Business Strategy: Operating from salon suites with plans to expand to a 1,500 sq ft facility, Chad discusses the importance of selective partnerships and strategic inventory management. 4. Industry Evolution: He shares his perspective on emerging trends, from regenerative aesthetics to the integration of wellness services, while advocating for more standardized practices and research in the field. We dive deep into the challenges of scaling an aesthetics practice while maintaining quality and authenticity. Chad's insights on everything from patient relationships to vendor management offer valuable lessons for practitioners at all stages. His commitment to being "nothing if not a good time" while delivering excellent clinical results demonstrates that success in aesthetics doesn't require conforming to industry stereotypes. As he prepares to expand into a larger facility featuring four treatment rooms and a stunning lobby, Chad remains focused on building a practice that reflects his unique brand. His vision includes expanding into the intersection of aesthetics and functional medicine, highlighting the growing convergence of these fields. Whether you're a new practitioner trying to find your voice in the industry or an established provider looking to maintain authenticity while scaling, Chad's journey offers valuable insights into building a successful practice without compromising your values or personality. Together, we debunk common myths around low-carb diets for endurance athletes and discuss how sustainable nutrition impacts athletic performance, recovery, and overall well-being. Kylie also provides practical strategies for fuelling before, during, and after workouts—whether you're training for a marathon, hitting a 5K loop, or preparing for an ultra-endurance event. Tune in to learn how personalized nutrition, including the careful tracking of macros and micronutrients with tools like Cronometer, can elevate your performance and help you feel your best.   Key Notes: • Balancing Fat and Carbs: Both carbs and fats are essential for endurance athletes—carbs fuel higher-intensity efforts, while fat supports ultra-endurance events. • Fueling Strategies: Pre, during, and post-workout fueling should focus on easy-to-digest carbs and adequate protein for energy and recovery. • Carbohydrate Loading: Strategic carb loading 1-3 days before races maximizes glycogen stores for peak performance. • Micronutrient Focus: Tracking key micros (like iron and magnesium) helps prevent fatigue and injuries, with Cronometer providing detailed insights. • GI Distress & Food Sensitivities: Monitoring symptoms and adjusting fiber intake can reduce gastrointestinal issues during long workouts. • Mindset & Sustainability: Building sustainable nutrition practices is key to maintaining performance and preventing disordered eating patterns. • Kylie's Practical Tips: Set up personal aid stations, use sports bras or belts for fuel storage, and experiment with biometrics in Cronometer to enhance training.   Quote to Highlight: “Nutrition is a performance enhancer—people don't always realize how good they can feel until they start fueling their body the right way.” – Kylie Van Horn   Website: www.flynutrition.org/ Instagram: @flynutrition3 Podcast: Your Diet Sucks   www.cronometer.com

Jackye and Katee discuss their journeys as Catalysts for change in DEIB, highlighting the importance of transparency, resilience, and meeting people where they are to overcome resistance and drive meaningful transformation in organizations. Katee Van Horn, Chief People Officer at WebPros, shared her experiences of stepping into challenging roles and pushing organizational boundaries to improve employee experiences. She emphasized the significance of operating in the gray areas and bringing the team along as Catalysts, encouraging them to make mistakes, learn, and grow. Jackye Clayton, VP of Talent Acquisition and DEIB at Textio, recounted her unconventional path to leadership. Despite not having a college degree, she leveraged relationships and took on roles she wasn't initially qualified for, demonstrating resilience and adaptability. Her journey underscored the importance of leaning into discomfort, breaking norms, and continuously iterating to achieve impactful results. Both guests discussed the critical role of transparency and clear communication in navigating resistance. They stressed the need for organizations to create inclusive environments where everyone feels they belong. The conversation also touched on the backlash against DEIB initiatives, with Jackye and Katee advocating for meeting people where they are and bringing them along on the journey towards equity and inclusion. Their insights remind us that pushing past resistance often involves a combination of self-advocacy, allyship, and a willingness to challenge the status quo. By doing so, leaders can foster a diverse workforce that collaborates effectively and drives more powerful, innovative outcomes for the organization. Navigating the Storm Dr. Christine Van Horn There is no doubt we are living in very tumultuous times today. The entire earth is heaving with unprecedented events. Societies cross the globe are grappling with profound moral and ethical dilemmas. Israel is at war and the profound words penned centuries ago are resonating today with eerie relevance. Today, Dr. Christine Van Horn is here to share information that carries weighty implications for our modern world. We will be looking at a few scriptures from 2 Timothy, a letter written by the Apostle Paul as he provides poignant insights in the characteristics of “the last days.” His writings serve as both, a mirror reflecting our current times and as a compass, pointing us to a path not yet taken. Are we living in the shadow of these prophesies which Paul talks about? How can believers navigate the stormy waters of today's world culture, armed with these God Breathed scriptures? Christine is here to help us unpack these thought provoking verses, helping us to bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and contemporary challenges. Together, we are about to go on a journey through these scriptures, seeking clarity, inspiration – and most of all – HOPE. Hope amidst the uncertainties of the “End Times.” Dr. Christine Van Horn is an author, teacher and speaker. She is the author of 6 books, with three of them focusing on teaching character and foundational values. She has been on the Kingdom Cross Roads Podcast a few times and you can find those interview in our archives. Amen! Help me welcome to the program, Christine Van Horn!  Christine, it is so good to talk with you again. I've been looking forward to our discussion today! Christine, other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell our listeners, “Who is Dr. Christine Van Horn.” Paul's description of 2 Timothy 3, verses 1-5 paint a vivid picture of the moral decay of the last days. In your interpretation, how do these verses correlate with the broader Biblical narrative on the End Times – and do you see any parallels to today's culture and society? Today, we can clearly see that our society is deceived in all sorts of ways. Verses 1-5 also describe people “having a form of godliness – but denying its power.” How does this apply to believers today? Is it a warning of sorts to caution us about so-called “false prophets” or “false teachings” that are happening around us? What about the role of believers?  Given the warnings Paul shares about people being “lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud and so on,” how can believers be a beacon of light and truth during these challenging times? We read that scripture is “God Breathed” in verse 16. How do you believe this Divine Inspiration of the scriptures equips believers today? Will it help us to navigate these last days? How can we apply these verses personally?  I mean, considering Paul's warning that we should “remain rooted and grounded” in what we have learned throughs scripture, what practical steps can individuals take to ensure they remain steadfast and able to discern the Truth in these tumultuous days in which we find ourselves in today? As we get ready to close, what else does God have on your heart to share with us about these verses today? Christine, this has been so interesting. If someone wanted to reach out to you, to ask a
