How To Get Yourself From Anguish To Action

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 7, 2022 29:29

Curled up in bed, outraged, spinning, crying, despondent, or terrified? Maybe you've felt all of these things in the last few days. This episode doesn't rehash the recent tragedies, but helps guide you from fear and anger to right action.  Tait and Jenny walk through the steps listed below and also share some creative ways to help. For example, you don't need to throw a huge gala, it could be just 20 friends and neighbors.  WHAT NOT TO DO: 1) Don't let your fear and anger spin you into an unorganized ball of rage and then show up at non-profit activist meetings trying to change everything. Take a beat.2) Don't yell at your friends and family or accuse people of not doing enough before you've done an honest assessment of yourself and your actions. 3) Don't ignore your feelings.4) Don't assume that one big, heroic act on your part is going to fix the problem. It will take a million little acts, sustained over a long period of time. WHAT TO DO:1) Let yourself feel the anger, anguish, fear, depression. Go through it fully. Journal, read, rest. Take a few days to go through this, reflect, and recharge. The problems aren't going to go away while you do this. They will still be there when you are calmer and clearer. 2) Work through the Social Change Ecosystem map and workbook (link at bottom). This will help you identify where you can be of service and help you move out of a paralyzed, overwhelmed state. You can't do everything and you only have so many resources of time, emotional strength, and money. This framework will help you figure out how you can help consistently over a long period of time rather than in one short burst of anger and fear. 3) When you get to a meeting, honor the work that has been going on for years before you got angry enough to get involved. Listen, learn, and lend your gifts and talents. 4) Ask yourself what keeps you up at night. This will help guide you to what's deeply felt at your core. If we are going to give our time and energy to helping over a sustained period of time, we have to feel deeply connected to the cause. Quotes shared in this episode: "Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for." -Seamus Heaney"Anger is initiatory, not transformative." -Ruth KingReferenced in episode: Social Change Ecosystem Map https://buildingmovement.org/our-work/movement-building/social-change-ecosystem-map/Mariame Kaba http://mariamekaba.com/Closing song: "Here Comes The Sun" Nina SimoneREBEL HUMAN REPORT: subscribe at https://www.therebelhuman.com/newsletterLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/rebel-humanSUBSCRIBE to Rebel Human YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/RebelHumanSCHOOLS PROGRAM: https://www.therebelhuman.com/schoolsWEBSITE: https://www.therebelhuman.com/

This episode is about self-advocacy and fierce advocacy for your health. Tait starts out telling her story about a gynecologist trying to prescribe her estrogen without doing proper blood work, claiming she was moving into menopause. After getting another opinion from Dr. Richard Rock, she found out that wasn't the problem at all and she actually had a tumor on her pituitary gland. She explains what would've happened if she hadn't advocated for herself. They discuss the difference between advocating on behalf of someone else versus advocating for oneself.  Not everyone is standing up to or questioning doctors and they discuss how you can feel more comfortable doing so. What happens when you're depleted and really sick? What does your voice and vocal cords have to do with it? Jenny talks about how to make it easier to share your voice and disrupt the people pleasing status quo. You can take up space and make noise! SING! CHANT! Are you holding things in? Holding things back? This will be good information for you. Tait shares her challenges with saying some words and a little on interoception and exteroception and how moving fluidly between the two can be helpful when feeling anxious. They also discuss how mindful meditation can lead to apathy and an unhealthy detachment. Their funnies include their made up character, Carol Featherington. Good For My Mind Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/63wYcrA5cXDx3AzWwvZ1ly?si=8c4de9f74c3044fdClosing song: Sing by Jon Batiste + Tori KellyREBEL HUMAN REPORT: subscribe at https://www.therebelhuman.com/newsletterLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/rebel-humanSUBSCRIBE to Rebel Human YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/RebelHumanSCHOOLS PROGRAM: https://www.therebelhuman.com/schoolsWEBSITE: https://www.therebelhuman.com/

Will your life change by taking "adrenal support" supplements? Do we need to "detox"? Will lemon water help us digest and lose weight? What is homeopathy? Movement strengthens the nervous system, building resilience in the body that translates to resilience in our lives. Meditation actively trains the brain to process and navigate difficult emotions with equanimity and clarity. Creative expression allows a reimagining of a better world for ourself and others while actively connecting us with our values and greater purpose. The world needs more rebel humans, learn to be one now.Rebel Human was founded by Jenny Arrington and Tait Medina, Ph.D. Read more about them HERE.www.therebelhuman.comSchool Program: https://www.therebelhuman.com/schoolsSign up for the Rebel Human Report: https://www.therebelhuman.com/newsletterYouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/rebelhuman

Jenny and Tait talk about the program they are building to support school districts this Fall. As schools scramble, working day and night to prepare, they also acknowledge the programming holes. Additionally, we now know the toll that daily e-learning can take on kids. School systems don’t have the infrastructure to provide high quality supplemental instruction. We want to help. We’ve worked out the kinks around digital asynchronous learning. They talk about all the amazing teachers they’ve brought in to build the program, from a dancer who toured with Beyonce, Ashley Rockwell, to James Beard Grant Winner, Jasmine Sheth, to a recording artist, Jess Godwin, who has taught 40,000 people to write their song. They give a sneak peak of this new programming for schools and explain how it will get the kids inspired, off their screens to explore, and begin creating instead of consuming. We are excited to have Ellen King on the show today, founder of Hewn. Hewn is a bakery that Ellen started out of her condo. Ellen talks about the ways she is a Rebel Human! In the beginning, she delivered bread with her 3 year old son on their way to preschool with their Burley brimming with loaves. It is now a household name in Evanston and beyond. Everything at Hewn is made in-house, from scratch daily. Ellen tells the story of her winding path to baking bread and how it helped her through depression. If she had medicated herself, or ignored her depression, she may not have jumped into bread baking with the intensity and dedication that she did. She may not have found herself, her gift, her business, and her community. She has been sharing her gift and feeding the community for years, and we are grateful. The word hewn—which means to give form or shape with heavy cutting blows by hand—is a way to connect the past with the future. In a time of big box stores and large chains, Hewn is a return back to a smaller, independently owned and operated bakery. Evanston is the first municipality in the country to pass a resolution on reparations to their Black community and Robin Rue took the lead in bringing it to City Council for the vote. After years of ground work and months of negotiations, Robin got an almost unanimous vote and it passed. Robin talks with Jenny and Tait about her work and the necessity of reparations. Education isn’t going to close the wealth gap. Reparations can close that gap. White high school dropouts have more wealth than Black college graduates. White college graduates have seven times the wealth as Black college graduates. These are just a couple of examples among thousands that illustrate the wealth gap that isn’t closing. There is also a life expectancy gap so white people on average have 15 more years to accumulate wealth and build a financial legacy to hand down.Robin talks about what white people can be doing to help and what they can stay out of.Below are several resources that are referenced in the show: Evanston reparations fund that anyone can contribute to: https://www.cityofevanston.org/government/city-council/reparationsChicago Magazine article about Robin: http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/June-July-2020/Evanstons-Road-to-Reparations/?fbclid=IwAR0Otz2XJyQiXI9Rhj3WFjW5wb-1DyWF5pDYxm7s4YrmH6TF1z1VRwTMWOgThe Case For Reparations by Ta-Nehisi Coates https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2014/06/the-case-for-reparations/361631/Sunshine Enterprises: https://www.sunshineenterprises.com
