ADHD and politics has been at the top of my ‘topics I want to cover' list for quite some time now, but given the extreme political division within the United States and around the world, I wanted to wait until I had something to share that could possibly make things better and wouldn't add more fuel to the fire.    Well, I recently read the book The Molecule of More by Dr. Daniel Lieberman and Michael Long, and I was inspired to finally tackle this topic in a way that I thought my listeners  especially would be able to understand: with biology. What if, just like with ADHD, we could connect the differences in how we see the world to our brains, rather than character flaws or a moral failing?    I'm hoping that by answering this question, I can give you a new, gentler lens through which to view those on the other side of the political spectrum. The only way we're going to bridge the political gap is by trying to understand those who are different from us. If we can find an understanding through biology, rather than shaming and blaming, perhaps we can let down our guards enough to come together and start doing the work. Dr. Erika will surely liven up your party as she loves strategic planning and is excited to share it with the world. Strategic planning - a fun party trick that Dr. Erika loves to death, is often put on the backburner by companies and business owners until the very end or when their problems start popping up because they have been ignored for too long. Although it's become a buzzword, being authentic will allow you to impact the people around you and the things you do, while chasing the same carrot as everyone else may seem ideal and more accessible. However, many will not feel satisfied when they reach their end game and feel like they wasted time and effort on something unworthy. Rather than giving in to what society dictates as a measure of success, we should focus on our direction. Often, we look up to other people we admire and try to emulate them, and while there isn't anything wrong with that, we would make much more impact when we show up as ourselves rather than imitating someone else. To be authentic, one needs to show up as they are, don't let others define your success, and while it's not wrong to grind for your goals, ask yourself these questions:  Are you pushing because you want to? Are you moving because you're supposed to? Investing in your people is a must because they are the ones who will drive your business or even sink it. Regardless of whether they decide to stay or leave, it's essential to make people feel valued. Don't fall for trendy and generic professional development that you see being paraded around. Instead, spend time with your staff and see where you can take them from there. But before promoting someone, make sure that you will be able to communicate why you are doing that to provide them value and an opportunity to grow. Even the least interested leader will take up the mantle when given clarity on why they are granted that role. The same goes with delegation. Lieberman, M.D. He is professor and vice chair for clinical affairs in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at George Washington University. Dr. Lieberman is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a recipient of the Caron Foundation Research Award, and he has published over 50 scientific reports on behavioral science. How to have a healthy relationship with dopamine The observing ego Delusions and psychosis Takeaways:   The single most important thing in this world was the human mind.   In order to get something you don't have, the first step is you've gotta want it so that you're willing to put in the work.   Dopamine is interested in what we don't have, and as soon as what you want becomes what you have, dopamine shuts off.   The kind of people who can most afford a beach house are least able to enjoy it.   The main purpose of the brain is to keep us alive, keep us functioning, keep us reproducing, basically keep us obeying dopamine.   Craving is when you feel that there is nothing that can make you feel good, and nothing can make you feel satisfied unless you use that substance.   What happens with addiction is that we have an imbalance between the desire and the control circuits.   The real key to helping people overcome addiction is going to be in the kinds of new relationships they're able to form.   Love is a dopaminergic phenomenon. It's not so different from getting very, very high on drugs.   Healthy behavior is a habit. You can't jump to the finish line in one leap. Guest Introduction: Our guests today are Dr. Daniel Lieberman and Michael Long. Dan is a professor and vice chair for clinical affairs in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at George Washington University. Mike is a trained physicist and award-winning writer. Dan and Mike are the co-authors of the new book, “The Molecule of More: How a Single Chemical in Your Brain Drives Love, Sex, and Creativity – and Will Determine the Fate of the Human Race.” Interview Summary: In this interview, Dan and Mike start by discussing where they got the idea for their new book. They describe what dopamine is, how it functions in the human body, and how it affects our thoughts and behaviors. We then ask them how understanding the idea of dopamine can help us to live healthier, more fulfilling lives. They go on to talk about how modern technology stimulates the same receptors that we used to stimulate with drugs and alcohol. They also explain how dopamine focuses on maximizing future resources, and is incapable of ever being satisfied. Chris provides an example of getting a similar high from both pigging out and then dieting. Dan describes the three different dopamine pathways: desire, control, and physical movement, and explains how they work. We then ask Dan and Mike to discuss the role that dopamine plays in relationships, love, and sex. They offer advice on avoiding the friend zone, as well as managing longer term relationships and transitioning from a future to present focused mindset.
