In 1934, Upton Sinclair ran for governor of California. During the campaign, he wrote a book, in the past tense, talking about all he accomplished as governor. The problem? He got crushed in the election bid. His talk and hype outpaced the work he needed to do to actually win the race. Like Sinclair, many of us can get ahead of ourselves with talk—about what we have or hope to accomplish. In the process, our hype game outpaces our actual accomplishments. In this episode, we'll talk about practical ways to make war with ego, or pride, which starts with the words we use. Who do we blame when things go wrong? Who do we give credit to when things go right? How does seeing ourselves as a student help us tame the beast of overgrown pride? We'll discuss this and more in the episode. Chapter 1:Summary of Ego Is the Enemy"Ego Is the Enemy" by Ryan Holiday is a philosophical book that explores the concept of ego and its detrimental effects on personal and professional growth. The book is structured around three main sections: Aspire, Success, and Failure, each illustrating how ego can obstruct our path at various stages of our lives.1. Aspire: In this section, Holiday discusses the importance of humility and the value of being a student. He emphasizes that a strong drive for success should be accompanied by a desire to learn and grow. Ego can lead to overconfidence, making us less receptive to feedback and new ideas.2. Success: Here, Holiday highlights how achieving success can inflate our ego, leading us to become complacent or arrogant. He warns against the dangers of entitlement and the temptation to rest on our laurels. Instead, he advocates for maintaining a mindset of continuous improvement and gratitude, reminding us that success can be fleeting.3. Failure: In the final section, Holiday examines how ego can exacerbate failure. He points out that people often struggle to accept setbacks due to their inflated sense of self. The book emphasizes resilience, the ability to learn from mistakes, and the importance of taking responsibility for one's actions.Throughout the book, Holiday shares historical examples and anecdotes of notable figures who either succeeded or failed in part due to their relationship with their ego. He argues that managing ego is essential for achieving long-term fulfillment and success. In conclusion, "Ego Is the Enemy" serves as a guide for recognizing and overcoming the ego's influence, encouraging readers to adopt humility and a growth mindset in their personal and professional lives.Chapter 2:The Theme of Ego Is the Enemy"Ego Is the Enemy" by Ryan Holiday is a philosophical work that explores the impact of ego on personal and professional achievement. Can ancient philosophy be the key to modern success? Ryan Holiday, a leading thinker of his generation, believes so. From NFL quarterbacks to corporate CEOs, many credit Holiday's work with introducing them to the transformative power of Stoic philosophy. In this episode, Ryan talks to Guy about the teachings of the Stoics through the lens of Holiday's influential books, including The Obstacle Is The Way, Ego Is The Enemy, Stillness Is The Key, and, most recently Right Thing, Right Now. These aren't just bestsellers—they're respected works that have left a lasting impact on leaders and entrepreneurs around the world. But Ryan Holiday's journey wasn't always about philosophy. Before becoming a celebrated author and podcaster (The Daily Stoic) he started his career in marketing, a field that would shape his first book and inform parts of many others. This conversation was recorded in 2021.
Stuart McLaren is a Scottish-Australian football player and coach, who is currently assistant coach for the Northern Ireland national women's team. As a player Queensland Roar signed McLaren on a short-term contract in early November 2005. He was signed due to Josh McCloughlan's injury, playing as a defender as he did when he was a former player-coach with the Brisbane Strikers in the NSL in Australia. He was then signed as a permanent player and regularly played in the starting eleven, occasionally captaining the Queensland Roar. McLaren left Australia in early 2011 returning to the United Kingdom to be nearer his place of birth with his family. In June 2011, he was appointed as head of Football at the world renowned Loughborough University in England. Following a very successful stint in British University Sport, McLaren began his journey in mens professional football when he was appointed manager of Stirling Albion in November 2014, where he experienced relegation from Scottish League One at the end of the 2014–15 season. He left Stirling Albion by mutual consent in September 2016, following a 4–0 defeat by Elgin City. In October 2018, McLaren was appointed by the Scottish Football Association to be a national youth team coach, with responsibility for the Scotland U16 team. McLaren was appointed interim manager of the Scotland women's national football team in January 2021 where he remained in the role until the appointment of permanent manager Pedro Martinez Losa at the end of 2021. He is here to share all that experience and knowledge with aspiring coaches and to offer strength and support to people already in the industry.

Leave Wellness + Wisdom a Review on Apple Podcasts Power Quotes From The Show The Ego Protects You "Our ego is always trying to protect what life is always trying to annihilate. Life has a target on your core wounds because the universe knows that until you heal those core wounds, you're always going to be brought back down to that level of development. You're going to attract situations in life that are going to give you an opportunity to heal core wounds that you experienced as a child." - Greg Schmaus Collective Wounds "A lot of times we have this illusion that if we keep revisiting things or the same things keep coming up, it means we haven't healed that in ourselves. Which maybe that's true but I think there's a possibility that that's not true. A lot of the things that we're healing within ourselves are not actually ours personally. They're collective patterns that we're voluntarily working through as a way of transmuting that energy out of the collective." - Greg Schmaus Intuition = Relationship with God "Your relationship with God directly connects to your relationship with your intuition. Your intuition is an expression of the higher self that's guiding you towards your potential which a lot of times goes against what feels safe and familiar. If you're still in your survival archetype, always needing to go to self-preservation, you're going to override intuition to always go into that self-preservation because the two are in conflict. Once you heal these survival archetypes, you're in a different relationship with truth. “Don't take yourself too seriously, if you do it is about your ego. If I get my ass kicked, I will brag about it, because then it means I am learning something. We go into these things as insecure beings, I was no different. But be willing to learn, my philosophy revolves around the concept of learning. I have progressed a great deal, because every time I train with someone, I will come out better in some way. I want to grow every time.” – Michael Jai WhiteReturning as my guest this episode is Michael Jai White, a highly trained martial artist, and actor. Michael has broken barriers as a Hollywood star and is an International Box office sensation. He is a national martial arts champion, a special education teacher, and a Black Belt under the legendary Bill “Superfoot” Wallace. He was awarded Black Belt Magazines, 2015 Man of the Year. This episode is all about approaching the study of martial arts with humility and honesty. My key takeaway is that the Ego is the enemy and it stands in the way of progress and growth. Humility relaxes the Ego and allows martial artists to face their insecurities and control issues. By repeatedly putting yourself in uncomfortable positions and letting go of what other people think you will become comfortable expressing your authentic self and this will unlock your true hidden potential. We also dive deep into the value of sparring, and how to get the most out of your sessions. Michael shares great stories of his encounters with Floyd Mayweather, Donald Cerrone, and Michael Bisbing. This was a fascinating conversation about martial arts, philosophy, and mindset, tune in for another great episode with Michael Jai White.

Power Quotes From The Show Why Do We Experience Suffering? "Reality, in its mercy, has to show you that you're contradicting the way things really are and it does that through what we call suffering. Suffering is like a wake-up call to change your relationship with life, with reality. And until we do that, to the point where everything is a loving relationship, then we're going to suffer to some degree." - Aaron Abke Spiritual Bypassing "The ego will use any spiritual concept to trick you into bypassing your feelings and healing. Ego doesn't want you to sit with your pain and love it and forgive it. It wants you to bypass it. It loves using spiritual teachings to do that." - Aaron Abke Unconditional Love Is Our Savior "The only savior that exists for consciousness at this level is love. Our embodiment of love is our return to unity. It's our return to the remembrance that all is one. That's why the Law of One calls it the service to others' path. You have to get beyond yourself, the separate ego self, and begin to share what you are with others. Love is not a possession of something. Love is unconditional, it thinks no thought of itself, and it extends itself. Because of that love has an infinite supply of power." - Aaron Abke Links From Today's Show Aaron Abke The Ra Material: An Ancient Astronaut Speaks (Law of One) by Don Elkins, James Allen McCarty, Carla Rueckert A Course In Miracles by Foundation For Inner Peace Ego Is The Enemy by Ryan Holiday Paul Chek Aaron Abke's YouTube Channel Eye of Ra and Eye of Horus 528 Vanessa Lambert | Clear Karma, Find Dharma: The Healing Power of Kundalini Yoga + Akashic Records 503 Paul Levy | Wetiko: Break Free From Collective Mass Psychosis Shop the Wellness Force Media Store breathwork.io HIGHER DOSE INFRARED MAT, RED LIGHT FACE MASK, SAUNA BLANKET - Get 15% off with the code “JOSH15“ (link + code must be used together for discount) Cured Nutrition CBD - Save 20% with the CODE "WELLNESSFORCE" PLUNGE – Save $150 with the code “WELLNESSFORCE" LiftMode - Save 10% with the code "JOSH10" Organifi – Special 20% off to our listeners with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' HVMN - Get 20% off your Ketone IQ order with the code "JOSH" MitoZen – Save 10% with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” Paleovalley – Save 15% on your ACV Complex with the code ‘JOSH' NOOTOPIA - Save 10% with the code "JOSH10" ActivationProducts – Save 20% with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” NEUVANA - Save 15% with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” SENSATE - Save $25 on your order with the code "JOSH25" DRY FARM WINES - Get an extra bottle of Pure Natural Wine with your order for just 1¢ CHILISLEEP - Save 25% on Josh's favorite ChiliSleep products with the code "JOSH" ION - Save 15% off sitewide with the code ‘JOSH1KS' TOUPS - Save 15% with the code "JOSH" Feel Free from Botanic Tonics – Save $40 when you use the code ‘WELLNESS40′ Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, with any purchase BREATHE - Save 20% by using the code “PODCAST20” Essential Oil Wizardry: Save 10% with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' MY GREEN MATTRESS - Save up to $125 on your order with the code "JOSH" NEUROHACKER - Save 15% with the code "WELLNESSFORCE" ALIVE WATER - Save 33% on your first order with the code "JOSH33" M21 Wellness Guide Wellness + Wisdom Community Leave Wellness + Wisdom a review on Apple Podcasts Aaron Abke The Aaron Abke Podcast Instagram YouTube About Aaron Abke Aaron Abke is a spiritual teacher and conscious influencer. He was born and raised as a Pastor's Son in the Silicon Valley of California. He spent one year working as a full-time worship pastor at a church in San Jose until eventually, at 23, he felt called to leave his religion and pursue a deeper and more authentic spirituality. At 27 years old, Aaron had a spiritual awakening that changed the course of his life. He was working as a signed Fitness Model in San Francisco and competing at the National level in men's bodybuilding at the time, and completely walked out of his former life to dedicate his life to seeking how to return to that state of Self-Realization permanently. Aaron's passion is teaching Unity Consciousness and Spiritual Awakening with the world, and he does so today via YouTube, Social Media, MasterClasses, and Workshops, primarily teaching through texts such as "A Course In Miracles" and "The Law of One". Aaron believes that Unity Consciousness and freedom from the Ego is the next evolutionary leap for mankind and is available for anyone who truly desires it.
A leader who is more concerned with the success of the team than their own personal glory is a leader who will inspire others to do great things. When a leader is able to put their ego aside and focus on the big picture, they are able to make decisions that benefit everyone. But when a leader is focused solely on their own success, they become blinded by their ego. They may make decisions that benefit themselves in the short term, but in the long run, these decisions will hurt the team and the company. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theleadershipboost/message

In this week's minisode, I'm talking about '19 Rules For A Better Life' - at least in the mind of Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius, who believed that "our life is what our thoughts make it." I couldn't agree more, Marcus.Marcus Aurelius is known as one of the biggest proponents of Stoic philosphy, a philosophy practiced for centuries by the likes of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Theodore Roosevelt, Walt Whitman, Thomas Jefferson and many others. Stoicism is, among other things, a tool in the pursuit of self-mastery, perseverance, wisdom and peace. In this episode, I read out a newsletter from another great thinker, Ryan Holiday - author of Ego Is The Enemy and The Obstacle Is The Way - who picks out his favourite of Aurelius' rules for a better life, including 'never be overheard complaining', 'waste no time worrying about other people's opinions', and 'treat success and failure the same.' Listen, digest, implement, and you can't fail to see an improvement in your life. Fancy getting your hands on my FREE Top 10 Mindset Tips? On this episode, I dive into the topics of mentorship, coaches & how your ego is the enemy - how your ego can hold you back from reaching your potential in any area of life if you let it. I also share a personal business experience that completely changed the trajectory of my company & life. Are you self aware enough to know if your ego is getting in the way? Ego is what prevents you from hearing critical but necessary feedback from others. Ego makes you over-estimate your own abilities & worth, and under-estimate the effort & skill required to achieve goals. Overall, ego can cause you to miss opportunities — to improve, to connect with others, and to achieve your goals. Ego costs you time. So put your ego down & seek help - find a real life cheat code: Hold the B button & Press Up, Down and press R R1, R2, L1, L2, B, A (If you listen, you know).

When people react in a way that is out of proportion to the situation at hand, they aren't reacting to you. They are reacting from past hurt. They are reacting out of ego. How do we fly above the fray? How do we act, and react, like Jesus? 1) Overlook the offense 2) Check your ego at the door 3) Don't let fear dictate your decisions.

In our next series on Ryan Holiday, we dive back into Ego is the Enemy to answer questions about what to do when the biggest obstacle is internal. Holiday explains how finding early successes led him to the realization that ego can cloud ambition and hinder personal and professional growth, particularly when accomplishments are tied to self-worth. Ego Is the Enemy puts forth the argument that often our biggest problems are not caused by external factors such as other people or circumstances. Instead, our problems stem from our own attitude, selfishness, and self-absorption. In other words, introducing ego into a situation often prevents us from being rational, objective, and clear-headed. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
