My conversation with Sol Nazzar, a yoga teacher from Honduras, was so beautiful as we dove into her history and how getting in tune with yourself helps you to be inspired by your true nature. I hope that this conversation made you want to travel to learn more from yoga teachers around the world just like Sol and I both have done. And how it has changed both of our paths because of it - it can change yours as well! If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about Honduras then this is the conversation for you. Support the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/wildyogatribe For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Honduras episode? What was it like to “grow up” with yoga? Yoga as a family activity every Sunday Why incorporate dance, capoeira, body expression, and theater into yoga? How to find your own inner guru? Yoga is an everyday methodology Tell me more about Sol Nazzar Sol Nazzar, a yoga teacher from Honduras, has been teaching yoga for 20 years, integrating her diverse training in Ashtanga, Iyengar, Kundalini, Sivananda, Jivamukti, Hatha, and Vinyasa styles. She combines her experiences in capoeira, dance, body expression, and theater to create a unique and fluid approach to yoga. She teaches internationally and at the Yoga's Garden in Honduras. What to expect in the Yoga In Honduras episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Sol Nazzar is a radiant yoga teacher hailing from Honduras. Sol's name, meaning "sun" in Spanish, perfectly captures the radiance she brings to her dynamic and transformative yoga classes. With 20 years of teaching experience under her belt, Sol's journey has led her to integrate various yoga styles, including Ashtanga, Iyengar, Kundalini, Sivananda, Jivamukti, and Vinyasa into her teaching. But it doesn't stop there; she infuses her classes with her deep love for capoeira, dance, body expression, and theater, creating a unique and mesmerizing experience for her students. What sets Sol apart is her deep-rooted connection to yoga, which she inherited from her family. Growing up, her father's life-changing encounter with an Indian guru led him to embrace yoga wholeheartedly. Her mother, while pregnant with Sol, also practiced yoga, creating an aura of positivity and mindfulness that surrounded her family from the very beginning. Their Sunday ritual of exploring different yoga asanas together laid the foundation for a lifelong passion for yoga and a love for sharing its profound benefits with others. In the backdrop of Honduras, where yoga was once met with skepticism and misconceptions, Sol's perseverance and passion have contributed to its blossoming acceptance. Her family's studio, Yoga's Garden, has been a guiding light, offering a sanctuary where students discover the true depth of yoga beyond physical postures. The studio's nurturing environment has attracted practitioners from diverse backgrounds, fostering growth in not only asana but also meditation and energy work. Sol Nazzar is a beacon of light in the yoga world, spreading positivity, love, and inspiration wherever she goes. Real inclusion is all about connection! It's not about having everyone in the classroom doing the exact same work. It's about helping everyone find the way that they can connect with the topic of the day best!In this episode, I talk about how I manage this in my online classes where I teach Woodworking and Family Yoga through The Charlotte Mason Co-op.But really, it just comes down to treating kids with respect as persons (just like you) and "minding your own mat" to allow children to work where they are at.Join me as we talk about providing "wiggle room" so kids can connect in a way that is valuable to them!Show Notes: https://amybodkin.com/podcast-episode-15

This is now also an article in Better Humans Publication - How to Teach Atypical Family Yoga https://betterhumans.pub/how-to-teach-atypical-family-yoga-32bba77ed462?sk=d93d20ac300da1c5cd3efbbaba593fab Unconditional positive regard is the key to seeing kids shine! Non-judgment, self-regulation, and appreciation: these are essential in any yoga class. When teaching neurodiverse families (as I've done for 20 years), these qualities will make or break your class. Jess is a yoga teacher who was hired to teach family yoga to a group with autistic kids. She was feeling nervous about it, and reached out for best practices and suggestions. Below are the recommendations I gave her. These suggestions could also apply to doing yoga with your own family at home, or to any family yoga class. Modeling inclusivity benefits everyone. What neurodivergent kids and their parents crave the most: Unconditional positive regard. Some other tips I cover: “YES” space Let it go Accept Appreciate Priming Visual supports Special interests Sensory Sensitivities Community How I Structure Inclusive Family Yoga Classes: Sit in a circle — kids with parents on one mat or each on their own next to each other. Encourage everyone to participate at their level of ability, and do something centering, like a name song, a chant or an ice breaker. Let the kids shine! Keep it fun and be sweet. Keep relaxation time short. End with a simple song or chant. Have a blast! Maybe you will see that the kids or their parents are calmer after class. Maybe you will see them shine. You may never know the benefit your class has on the families who attend. That's okay, since inclusive family yoga isn't something you will do for the validation. It will be an extension of your yoga practice, and you will learn so much. FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/mindfullyparentingatypicalkids Free 5 Day Challenge starts Monday April 19! Ceci est le premier épisode de la série de la fête des mères. Durant le mois de mai je parlerai avec des mamans de tout les âges. On this episode I sat down with Alba Gil, filmmaker, yoga teacher, mother to a 4 year old boy. Alba created the successful Family Yoga program at Naada Yoga in Montreal's Mile End. We talk about her immigration to Canada from Mexico and the cultural differences of raising a child. She lets us in on the daily challenges of being an entrepreneur and mother and generously shares her traumatic birth experience. Le désir d'Alba est de créer une communauté dans laquelle les parents et enfants peuvent partager une pratique commune. Perhaps listening to this episode we can all take from Alba to be ok with what is uncomfortable, to listen to our intuition and remember the importance of friends and community especially during the early years of parenthood. Cet épisode de déroule en anglais. You can find Alba at: www.naadayogafamily.ca instagram & facebook @naadayogafamily

She empowers children by teaching them the most important technique of yoga, which is breath. Breath is a simple technique that anyone can use anywhere because it is immediate and non-disruptive. To wake up and know everything will be ok because your calming tools are constantly with you is empowering. Meet Christine Devereaux the owner of Spectrum Yoga. She has taken her love of yoga and developed specialized classes to help children with autism and their families. She not only works with individuals but teaches yoga to the family unit as well. Yoga does not discriminate, if it works for your child, it will work for you and vise versa. Christine talks about the world as being a reflection of yourself, so if you see the world as chaotic then internally you are chaotic. In her yoga classes she brings this awareness to her students by teaching them to slow down and breathe. Yoga is just not a practice... it is a life skill. IN THIS EPISODE: Christine Devereaux is the owner and founder of Spectrum Yoga located in Littleton, Colorado. Spectrum Yoga is a therapeutic yoga service specifically for individuals with autism. It’s a goal-based service with specialized and private classes. Classes are offered for children between the ages of 7-18 and she offers family classes so they can learn yoga techniques as a family unit. Over the last two years Christine has developed several specialized classes based on the needs of families and her students. The primary needs are helping with anxiety. A lot of the yoga work focuses on breathing and overall muscle tone. Breathing affects everything from speech to muscle tone. Breath is more important than poses and works directly with nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. Breath is a technique that someone can use and pull out anywhere. We don't know what triggers kids, so something as simple as a breathing technique is immediate and non-disruptive. Children can calm in their environment quicker. Christine sees lots of families come in as yoga being their last resort. She developed a Sensory Wind Down that helps with sleep. Parents come in looking to do things like yoga to replace or avoid medication. The tools that they learn in class they can apply every night instead of giving medication. Sleep is huge! Another thing that affects your body is when you lack sleep. You can see kids unraveling with less sleep. Sensory Wind own helps with sleep. It also balances the nervous system. In return it helps with rest and digestion. Parents have said kids have more self-regulation and less anxiety Christine also does Life Skills Yoga. It is really fun, luxurious, and relaxing. Life Skills Yoga involves massage and essential oils. It helps with anxiety, communication (verbal or non-verbal) listening, and awareness. These four things bleed into life. People ask how yoga affects life skills and it's everywhere from managing emotions at a job to communicating with people, etc. In addition, Christine offers Family Yoga. It is great because sometimes parents stress bleeds into their child's anxiety and they don’t see or know that it's happening. Working on stress as a family and recognizing it is huge to keep things peaceful at home. Yoga does not discriminate. If it works for your kid it will work for you and vise versa. There are so many different types of yoga. There is kids yoga, adaptive yoga, and yoga therapy You can apply yoga techniques to anyone at any age. Christine also does Hand Yoga in which she teaches her students a technique to do with their hands while saying “sa ta na ma." It's for regulation that they do when things are overwhelming. It's something that kids can do by themselves and it's awesome. Life is so hustle and bustle and Christine feels people don’t think yoga is effective because with yoga you do have to take the time to slow down and pay attention. Sometimes people don’t see the benefits of slowing down your breath. If we could instill slowing down and breath to kids, it could be life changing. It would change their mindset and show them to see the world in a more calm and positive way. That is when they can start interacting with the world because it gives them control. The world is a reflection of you, so if you see the world as chaotic then internally you are chaotic. So to have the control within you is essentially controlling the world around you. How empowering is that? To wake up and know everything will be ok. "I have my tools with me and the world is at my fingertips." That awareness piece is a life skill. When it comes down to it, it's all breath. Christine teaches it in every class. It's yoga, it's meditation, it's a life skill. MINDSHIFT (takeaways) Let go of the expectation of what you think yoga is because it's different for everyone... Forget what you think it is, come with no expectation and try it out.
