Welcome back! We are pleased to welcome Connor Pratt to the podcast. Connor is a former USMC Logistics officer who attended the Cameron-Brooks Career Conference in January 2018— and the perfect example of how a prepared officer has options when making the transition to business. He spent eight years in the USMC and held many positions, including Battalion Maintenance Management Officer, Platoon Commander, Battalion Motor Transport Officer, and Joint Logistics Directorate Officer. Connor has a degree in Marine Transportation from the US Merchant Marine Academy. When he attended the Career Conference, he interviewed for roles in Team Leadership and General Management, Business Analysis, and Business-to-Business Sales. Breaking Down Misconceptions At the Career Conference, Connor interviewed with 15 different industry-leading companies, including Boston Scientific, Corning, Kaeser, and Altec. He intimately chose to work for Globus Medical, a world-leading spinal and trauma medical device company. He started his career in a business-to-business sales role, and we spent the first part of the conversation diving into his day-to-day work life. Because many Junior Military Officers have a skewed view of what life is like starting in a sales role, it is always good to hear from someone who has been at it for many years now and understand their perspective on the nature of the work. A Prepared Officer Gets Results Connor spent 13 months in the Cameron-Brooks Development and Preparation Program© (DPP) before attending the January 2018 Career Conference. During that time, Connor participated in a robust professional reading program, learned about the different career field options available to him, created a relevant and specific professional resume, and prepared to interview with multiple hiring managers. Through that in-depth preparation process, Connor attended the Career Conference and got every company he interviewed to pursue him. In this episode, he explains how he thoroughly engaged in the DPP to get those kinds of results. Have Friends and HAVE FUN! Connor's friend, Chris Wilkeson, attended the November 2015 Career Conference. The two pieces of advice that Connor gives that helped him to be more successful through the process are: 1) keep in contact with those who went before you and 2.) have fun. The first seems logical; the second seems counter-intuitive. That said, the officers that are more successful at the Career Conference are those who are prepared and, thus, have the mentality to have fun. At the Conference, you will meet a wide variety of interesting and experienced business professionals. Those officers who see that as an opportunity tend to have more success through the process; that is just more fun! Abstract: The lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), a retinotopic relay center where visual inputs from the retina are processed and relayed to the visual cortex, has been proposed as a potential target for artificial vision. At present, it is unknown whether optogenetic LGN stimulation is sufficient to elicit behaviorally relevant percepts and the properties of LGN neural responses relevant for artificial vision have not been thoroughly characterized. Here, we demonstrate that tree shrews pretrained on a visual detection task can detect optogenetic LGN activation using an AAV2-CamKII-ChR2 construct and readily generalize from visual to optogenetic detection. We also characterize how amplitude and frequency of optogenetic stimulation affect behavioral performance. Given the importance of temporal stimulation parameters, we also study tree shrew behavioral ability to discriminate among pairs of visual flicker frequencies and demonstrate performance transfer among related discrimination problems as well as limitations. Neural recordings in LGN and primary visual cortex (V1) examining two flicker discriminations reveal that while LGN neurons multiplex information about temporal stimulation discriminations, V1 neurons explicitly encode information about one or the other discriminations but not both. Our findings confirm the LGN as a potential target for visual prosthetics and introduce a distinction in stimulus encoding between thalamic and cortical representations that could be of fundamental importance in artificial vision.

Abstract: Mechanisms of neuromodulatory transmission in the brain remain ambiguous. Dopamine is a prototypical neuromodulator, and it was recently found that its secretion relies on active zone-like release site assemblies. Here, we use in vivo biotin-identification (iBioID) proximity proteomics in mouse striatum to isolate dopamine release site proteins enriched over the general dopamine axonal protein content. Using three bait proteins, we identified 527 proteins that fall into several synaptic protein classes, including active zone, calcium regulatory and synaptic vesicle proteins. We also detected many proteins not previously associated with synaptic exocytosis. Knockout of the presynaptic organizer protein RIM profoundly disrupted dopamine release site composition assessed by iBioID, while Synaptotagmin-1 knockout did not. Alpha-synuclein, a protein linked to Parkinson's disease, was enriched at release sites, and this enrichment was lost in both tested mutants. We conclude that RIM organizes scaffolded dopamine release sites and we define the protein composition of these sites. Copy rights belong to original authors. So in today's episode, we want to talk about, the concept of building an ecosystem, thinking about how it can benefit your business, and if you can sell it that way. Notes on the time-stamped show: [00:00] Introduction [01:24] How pricing can be utilised to build new and stickier business models that customers find difficult to leave. [04:53] Business models, such as espresso and Apple, emphasising how they created an ecosystem wherein everything the customers need is offered, boosting profitability. [08:18] How different it is to build ecosystems in B2B settings, and how can they do it. [12:20] How to build an ecosystem and create barriers against competitors without your customers realising it. [15:44] Joanna highlights the need of striking a balance between customer value, manufacturing, and product innovation, for a successful business transformation. Hello and welcome to another edition of Pricing College, with your hosts, Aodhan Campbell and Joanna Wells Someone told me last week that I'm known as the cool teacher of Pricing College, so thank you very much for that. I actually made that up. So in today's episode, we want to talk about, the concept of building an ecosystem, thinking about how it can benefit your business, and if you can sell it that way. So what is an ecosystem? In theory, it's building a system that basically increases the chances that you will sell things to people. Whether that is the classic selling of a printing machine, and then printing, you know cartridges or an espresso machine. Then locking in, that you have to sell them on espresso pods. So that's a concept that we will discuss today. When I think about this concept, I describe it as a sale system, something we can sell more of to customers. But actually, beneath that, an ecosystem is a whole business model change. But before we get on to that, what I'm particularly interested in was how pricing can be used to make a new business model and sales model stickier, not more difficult for customers to get out of but also more valuable to customers so they wouldn't want to get out of this new system that you've built. And thinking about that, you've mentioned espresso... these people love espresso. It's a great business model and it's a new one. When you think about where espresso came from, so Nescafe and all that was built on the dry roasted coffee empire. But obviously, the business model was declining for years. People wanted fresher coffee, but they also wanted the convenience of that coffee at home but they didn't want to compromise on taste. So, espresso was launched. It really did disrupt the market in a good way and gave customers what they wanted. The key about the pricing: the actual machine itself was priced considerably below the alternative. Now the alternative was those, remember all those fancy, we have to grind down coffee beans, etcetera. Now, they were priced considerably higher on a per unit basis compared to the espresso. But the thing that really locked customers into espresso wasn't the machine. This was the genius behind the idea of the time. It was the pods that at a unit level were priced comparatively high. So as a customer, "Wow what a great business model. It's new, it's great. Attractive pods, interesting. Actually, the machine is pretty cheap. Yeah, get that." Not really thinking of the total cost of getting that machine when you think of all those pods that you use over a year. Some people in Australia drink two or three mega coffees, double or triple espressos a day. And you know, that's a highly profitable part of the business. So, the less profitable part of the business was the machine. They disrupted that market. They thought that compromised on profit on that. Because people will buy more of the pod. And obviously, they have to provide the value with the taste. Anyway, that's a concept where you can reinforce a new business model change with pricing, and use pricing as a way to make that business model sticky so customers will find it difficult to leave. What I really like about it, you'll also see it another example, which is Apple. In espresso, it doesn't integrate with other pods or other systems. In reality, it's quite limited which can be seen as a problem. In reality, that problem is the real design genius whereby, in your kitchen, you got one system, you're probably unlikely to change, and you're probably unlike to invest in a second system. It's some sort of aspect whereby you're designing it, you're thinking about the long-term. The only thing I like about the ecosystem of espresso, and this could be applied to all the businesses, Apple's another example is that it really tries to build this higher value community, versus other coffees. They have this sort of image of George Clooney, the actor, this glamorous individual that promotes espresso and gives it an aspirational aspect. You have them in espresso stores, and shopping centres, whereby you can only buy this one brand, which is very unusual when you think about it. We're used to supermarkets where you can buy everything. So it's an unusual approach but it builds the atmosphere. The other example I'll give is Apple, whereby they almost built a system that prevents other things from getting into it; whereby even the plugs are different, their operating systems are different. It builds a real community feeling. It builds a really close system that massively boosted the profits over time because they sell everything to you. Once you get on the door, once you got your MacBook, iMac or whatever you call it, they own you. And even small things, when they share a text message with an apple phone, it comes in a different way, and you can see when it's read, and stuff like that. And the people who have Apple phones didn't like receiving texts from Samsung or Android users. So it's almost strange peripheral things that reinforced that ecosystem. I just want to go back to that point you made. It's really a good point about this particular model. The union of systems seems like an instant hit. But obviously, you're taking smaller chunks or you have to transform your business model to become that new model. Because espresso... you know why they had to use a brand to sort of make some noise in a busy market, and it worked well for them... but I'm thinking for B2B, it quite a difficult play. It doesn't happen overnight. I think a lot of B2B businesses are making the sale now to hit the target because there are so many margin pressures at the moment, especially with inflation, and supply issues. This sort of conversation is nice to have. "Do we have time to change our business?" But that's short-time thinking. Too many CEOs have thought that in the past leading to the problems that we have now. I think mining, manufacturing, and a lot of industrial companies have a lot of untapped profit potential and aftermarket and afterparts servicing that they didn't explore. Because it didn't look, it didn't have the most revenue. It wasn't analysed in terms of growth rate, so it didn't seem the most profitable. But it's always been there as something that should have been nurtured over time. Some companies have grasped that and invested in it to make the wholesale business model transformation to this type of market. Even in B2B, I'm thinking of Kaeser who does like air compressor engines. They were, "We can sell engines because that's what our customers are used to or we can try to sell them in an ecosystem, the after-service parts, the ongoing services, the machine learning and data so we can optimise the machine." It worked very well for them. But it didn't happen overnight because obviously customers were used to buying the whole engine themselves. They had to disrupt the buying process as well and that took time, took marketing effort, new pricing model. In terms of pricing, they had to show their customers what the total cost of buying that engine was, not just the unit cost which was very expensive. But over time, if they buy the whole engine, they'd have to service it themselves, the maintenance, the downtime, etcetera. The biggest cost is energy to the customer. 300-400% more expensive than the maintenance cost, 5-10 years after the purchase, that's the average a compressor engine lasted. Here we've got two difficult challenges. How do you change your business model? And how do you change your market, your customer's perception about your products and make them buy differently, so it becomes more profitable? It requires investment and people to think strategically. People consider this the long play. Often it's the thing that's gonna save your business now. Thinking about profitable opportunities and how you can balance them with your BAU processes, which could be on the decline. I think there's probably a bigger topic that we'll come back to and dig into more specific examples. But I suppose in any business, the first thing to think is, "What are you really selling? What is the best way of charging for it? Are you selling the printer or are you selling the cartridges?" It's that sort of mentality. And then you start looking at potential buyers from the competition and trying to increase those really—trying to make sure that those barriers are as high as possible potentially without the customer knowing. That could be getting something into their hand, getting a capital asset bot. It could be a cost leader, it could be selling below cost, or it could be providing a capital asset to them. Once you have one, you get it there. It could be providing an app to them, an example is Uber. Once get that app, get used to using it, and you're probably gonna stay on that app. You're probably not going to go back to booking a taxi. I think it's really trying to work out how you can increase those barriers to a third party, to someone shopping and using other stuff without them being aware. I think warranties and guarantees are very useful. The classic car manufacturing is, you get the car, it's got warranty, as long as it uses official Toyota, or whoever it is, parts. Which really locks you into that ecosystem. It locks you to go back to the dealership. Once you're back, you're more likely to buy a car, I assume when you've seen new models. If you can get your hands on those barriers without them [customers] being aware of it... this could be as simple as free delivery. No set-up costs, no onboarding costs. Make those aspects as easy as possible. Get your foot on the door and potentially, it's hard to get you out of the door. I think this topic is very large. We can dig into it business by business in the future if people are interested. I know our clients are talking more about this, we need to cash flows now in light of the considerable margin pressures, and inflation that we're facing but at the same time we know we need to be different. But how? What are the steps to take in terms of business strategy? How do I think differently about customers? Cause remember, a lot of B2B, and naturally, operations on manufacturing focused, it's very hard to get out of that mindset if your whole legacy has been built around day to day operations making a product. As opposed to generating value for your customers, it's a very different mindset. And often the very people that are in those positions are struggling. The good ones recognise that and want to change. But that's not disregarding the manufacturing, absolutely not. But there's a balance between customer value, manufacturing, and product innovation. They should always be that competing force. From there, that's how you gradually transform your business—weighing up those three competing pressures in line with your business. As Aodhan said, it's a huge topic, something a lot of our clients are talking about. It's on their mind but making money is also on their mind. To cover the bills, to keep going. So feel free to get in touch with us if any of these has struck a chord, very happy to speak with you more about it. Thanks for listening.

Coming from a background in mechanical engineering, Matt McCorkle, Manager of Branch Operations for Kaeser Compressors, is very interested in how sales works. He has always believed in the power of the telephone as a selling tool, so when he learned about ConnectAndSell's sales-acceleration platform from our Market Dominance Guy, Chris Beall, Matt immediately saw how he could use the telephone to increase Kaeser's market share. “Matt was so curious, unlike many people in sales,” Chris says. Curious about how to get future appointments, how to coach coaches, how long onboarding takes, and about why face-to-face sales is different from phone sales. In this episode of Market Dominance Guys, Corey Frank and Chris learn what Matt has figured out: In face-to-face sales, he says, “people like you to leave feeling that they like you, and you like them, and everything's okay, so they're not really telling you the truth.” But — as the title of today's episode of Market Dominance Guys states — “On the Phone, They'll Tell You the Truth!” Tune in to hear our Guys' and Matt's view on dominating your market through the awesome power of well-orchestrated and professionally coached cold calls.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.10.28.357574v1?rss=1 Authors: Emperador Melero, J., Wong, M. Y., Wang, S. S. H., De Nola, G., Kirchhausen, T., Kaeser, P. S. Abstract: Liquid-liquid phase separation enables the assembly of membrane-less subcellular compartments, but testing its biological functions has been difficult. The presynaptic active zone, protein machinery in nerve terminals that defines sites for neurotransmitter release, may be organized through phase separation. Here, we discover that the active zone protein Liprin-3 rapidly and reversibly undergoes phase separation upon phosphorylation by PKC at a single site. RIM and Munc13 are co-recruited to membrane-attached condensates, and phospho-specific antibodies establish Liprin-3 phosphorylation in vivo. At synapses of newly generated Liprin-2/3 double knockout mice, RIM, Munc13 and the pool of releasable vesicles were reduced. Re-expression of Liprin-3 restored these defects, but mutating the Liprin-3 phosphorylation site to abolish phase condensation prevented rescue. Finally, PKC activation acutely increased RIM, Munc13 and neurotransmitter release, which depended on the presence of phosphorylatable Liprin-3. We conclude that Liprin-3 phosphorylation rapidly triggers presynaptic phase separation to modulate active zone structure and function. Copy rights belong to original authors. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Tuesday 17th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. NEWS IN BRIEF: Renault has confirmed the Australian dealers that will sell the Zoe EV, while the electric hatchback's list price of $47,990 before on-road costs has also been announced. Tesla is extending free unlimited Supercharging for Model S and Model X with referral program- but only for another two week A photo posted online showed the Performance Model 3 with 116MPGe, which less than the 130MPGe for the long range version Nissan's design boss Alfonso Albaisa has been talking about the next Nissan GT-R, and said the engineering team is still developing the basic architecture of the program, and debating how much electric assistance the powertrain will consist of, whether it will be a plug-in hybrid, a fully electric car or remain powered by a conventional combustion engine. FROM #1 CRITIC TO #1 FAN Sandy Munroe made a YouTube video of a first release Model 3 and didn’t hold back. Not a fan of the fit & finish [audio clip] But now having driven it, and taken it apart, someone has changed their tune. He raves about the electronics….[audio clip]…the batteries…[audio clip]…and he eats some humble pie…[audio clip] RUMOUR MILL: TESLA TO ADOPT CCS? Should we start with a rumour? I report on unsubstantiated rumours so little on this show but here's one that I've been asked about over the last few days, and then yesterday another thing crops up on Reddit, so let's speculate. So let’s start with Reddit: A German Tesla supporter named "Tesla Klaus" spoke to a Tesla technician during a Supercharger stop in Germany, who was at the Supercharger to replace two cables. However Tesla Klaus claims the engineer told hi, he's also doing preparations to add an additional cable to the Superchargers. Those additional cables will have CCS connectors (the chargers will have two cables, the existing Type 2 and then the new one with CCS Combo 2 plug). That's needed because the European Model 3 will have a CCS port. Cables and Connectors will be water cooled to support more power. Reservoir with coolant will be placed on top of chargers Here in Europe Tesla uses a slightly modified Type 2 connector for Supercharging. Tesla had to add the GB/T DC connector to S and X and did that by adding a charge port door, however the Model 3 charge port area is large enough to fit the Combo 2 connector. Japan favours CHAdeMO but Tesla doesn't support. However CCS Combo 2 can deliver charging up to 350kW, up to 1000v and 500A. In the European Union according to the Directive 2014/94/EU[26] all high power DC charging points set up after November 18th 2017 shall be equipped for interoperability purposes at least with Combo 2 connectors. Elon has hinted at Supercharger V3 in the past. There are screenshots of a Model 3 in factory mode which show that Model 3 is capable of DC charging with a higher rate than the current superchargers support. S & X will probably also support this once their battery setup gets an upgrade. ENGINEERING BOSS SAYS EVS "SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT TRANSFORMATIONS OF ALL TIME” "Joe Kaeser, global chief executive of the engineering giant Siemens, said up to almost a third of jobs could be lost as the transition from combustion engines to electric cars takes place over the next decade, in what will be “one of the single most important transformations of all time”. writing in today's Guardian newspaper Angela Monaghan: "Speaking over the weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Kaeser said it would be a key challenge for industry leaders to build the car of the future responsibly and get the transformation right, because ultimately many traditional roles will disappear in the short-term." He says: "It may cause quite a dip in employment, because if you have 20-30 less value chain, then … you have 20%-30% fewer jobs. That is how it has been in the first three industrial revolutions. There has always been a significant change in employment. And then by enabling growth, it actually turned out that more jobs were created. Higher growth was achieved and obviously more people moved out of poverty and had better lives." https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/jul/15/global-workforce-will-be-decimated-by-fourth-revolution-says-siemens-boss TESLA MODEL 3 ROLLOVER CRASH HAS A GOOD ENDING FOR THE DRIVER "Rollover accidents for electric vehicles are generally regarded to be rare. That’s mostly due to the fact that they have large and heavy batteries at the bottom of the vehicle, producing a low centre of gravity. Just last May, Tesla showed off how it tried to make a Model X rollover without success." reports JC Torres for Slashgear: "“I thought the car performed spectacularly from a safety standpoint. The driver seat airbags protected her during the roll including one underneath the steering wheel for her legs which I didn’t even know was there. As you can see from the photos the cabin was completely intact. The windshield and glass roof obviously shattered but they did not intrude into the cabin at all.”" Redditor StapleGun shared pics of his blue Model 3 whose front was pretty much totaled. Especially the driver side front wheel that hit the freeway median with such force that it sheared the wheel off. But the surprise was how the inside of the car was, for all intents and purposes, totally fine. https://www.slashgear.com/tesla-model-3-rollover-crash-has-a-good-ending-for-the-driver-15537706/ 20% OF PARKING SPACES SHOULD BE CONVERTED TO EV CHARGE POINTS "Local authorities should allocate one in five parking spaces to be converted into electric vehicle (EV) charge points by 2025 to prepare for the increasing uptake of zero-emission vehicles, a report has recommended." according to James Fossdyke for Motor1.com: "The National Infrastructure Commission’s study into the UK’s economic infrastructure says councils should turn five percent of parking spaces, including on-street spaces, into electric vehicle charging bays by 2020, before upping that to 20 percent by 2025." "The study also suggests regulating charging bays" https://uk.motor1.com/news/252353/parking-spaces-become-charging-points/ FORMULA E TEACHES CAR COMPANIES HOW TO MAKE ELECTRIC VEHICLES Forbes sat down with James Barclay, director for the Panasonic Jaguar Racing team, to talk about Jaguar’s involvement with Formula E and how the series will help the automaker continue to develop electric vehicles. "We’re already seeing real-world learnings from our activity in Formula E that apply to our production cars: the construction of some of the hardware items like the e-motors and inverter, the materials we use and the way we package them, the weight that we can achieve in the race car, how we maximize efficiency through software and control systems, how we optimize the whole powertrain, from the inverter to the e-motors. Fundamentally Formula E is about making cars go as fast as they can for as long as they can. From a production standpoint, that’s perfect because if you can achieve that in a customer car, it means the customer can drive longer and faster, too." https://www.forbes.com/sites/jaclyntrop/2018/07/16/formula-e-teaches-car-companies-how-to-make-electric-vehicles/#6ea9b33d1ae7 LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR V12 HYBRID TO LAUNCH A GENERATION "Lamborghini will embrace electrification in its next-generation flagship supercar due early in the next decade, and in the models that will follow" reports Steve Walker for AutoExpress: "Plans are afoot not just for a V12 hybrid in the Aventador replacement that will come first but for a V10 hybrid in the next Huracan and a fourth Lamborghini model line could also be under consideration. The V12 hybrid Aventador replacement had already been confirmed to Auto Express by Lamborghini Research and Development boss Maurizio Reggiani back in January. An all-electric Lamborghini isn’t part of the firm’s immediate plans, but an EV is an option beyond the next generation hybrid supercar" Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali: ""When we’re talking about performance, the killer of performance is weight. Nils had some great examples, but the webcast was limited to ASUG members only, so I asked him to come on the IoT Heroes show to share the customers wins with everyone. He didn't disappoint :) This chat is also available on Youtube at https://youtu.be/jOiBRL27h0U And Nils is @TechMadiba on Twitter
