Sep. 22: The solution to fixing Canada's broken healthcare system

Roy Green Show

We will begin to review issues which should take prominence in the upcoming federal election, whenever that may occur between now and next October. Issue 1: Healthcare for Canadians. The number of Canadians without a family doctor, currently at 6.5 million will swell to 10 million, or 25% of the national population. Meanwhile, seeing a specialist can take a year or longer in Canada and some people are dying undiagnosed. What is the possible solution? One argument is the introduction of additional private and insurable healthcare for Canadians. That is constantly decried and the doctor who has been at the forefront of the private healthcare for Canadians argument and has seen his arguments set aside by Canadian courts repeatedly is Dr. Brian Day. Guest: Dr. Brian Day. Founder, Cambie Surgery Centre, Vancouver. Author of My Fight for Canadian Healthcare: A Thirty-Year Battle to Put Patients First. Dr. Day is a past president of the Canadian Medical Association.   Learn more about your ad choices. Today's podcast: Is there any question any longer than war has in fact broken out between Israel and the Iran-sponsored and defined by Canada as a terrorist organization, Hezbollah?  And is the Canadian government increasingly turning its back on our traditional ally Israel? Israel certainly considers this to be so as Israel's Ambassador to Canada suggested on air with us yesterday.  Guest: Vivian Bercovici. Former Canadian Ambassador to Israel Canadians are drinking less (alcohol). Why might that be at a time of increased tensions? Cost? Something else? Guest: Professor Sylvain Charlebois. Nestled in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies in southern Alberta lies the small town of Pincher Creek.  With a population of just under 4,000, Pincher Creek has the distinction of being the “Wind Capital of Canada.”  It is perhaps better known as the birthplace and hometown of the Right Honorable Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin, the longest serving Chief Justice of Canada's Supreme Court.Despite being told by her 8th grade teacher that her aptitude for reading wouldn't do her much good as a girl, Chief Justice McLachlin went on to study philosophy and eventually law at the University of Alberta.  Upon graduating with high honors, she spent six years in private practice and then turned to academia, teaching at the University of British Columbia for seven years.  At age 37, she received her first judicial appointment to the Vancouver County Court.  Could she have imagined the significance of this life changing moment?  Over the next eight years, from 1981 to 1989, Justice McLachlin was on the rise!  She was appointed to the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the British Columbia Court of Appeals, made Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia, and in March 1989, she was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada. Her highest honor came in the year 2000 when she was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, a role she held for 17 years, making her the longest serving Chief Justice in Canada's history.    Chief Justice McLachlin's legacy cannot be adequately cataloged.  During her tenure on the Supreme Court, she authored over 400 majority opinions on the most consequential matters of legal interpretation under Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms, including assistance in dying, the criminalization of prostitution, equality, free speech, and aboriginal rights.Resources:Truth Be Told: The Story of My Life and My Fight for Equality, Beverley McLachlinFull Disclosure: A Novel, Beverley McLachlinHer Honor: Stories of Challenge and Triumph from Women JudgesThe Persons CaseSupport this podcast by subscribing and reviewing!Music is considered “royalty-free” and discovered on Audio Blocks.Technical Podcast Support by: Jon Keur at Wayfare Recording Co.© 2023 Silver Linings Media LLC. The 5 Cs of History: Context, Episode #3 of 4. There are few individuals in American history with as divided a legacy as Margaret Sanger. For many, she was a pioneer of women's health, an important birth control activist, and founder of Planned Parenthood. For others, Sanger represents the immorality of feminism and insidious evil of reproductive choice. Yet others see Sanger as a eugenicist orchestrating a genocide against the Black American population. Radical, unconventional, and outspoken, Sanger is an endlessly useful character for modern day political ends. Which is it? Was Margaret Sanger good or evil? If we slow down, think like historians, and examine Sanger's beliefs and actions within their historical context, we can get a bit closer to the reality. Welcome to season 2, episode 2 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week my guest is David Armstrong, also known as Sensei Dave Armstrong. At a young age Dave dealt with a lot of challenges and turmoil. He unfortunately watched his mother get physically abused by a man she was dating. He says that the experience hardened him so much so that he experienced his first arrest for armed robbery before the age of 12. Dave struggled with anger management issues from all the abuse not only that he watched his mother endure, but that he endured as well! His behavior brought him to live in a boy's camp, youth correctional facilities, and foster care after his mom passed away when Dave was just 13 years old. At one point Dave ran away from the facility he was living in and tried to commit suicide. He shares that at the time he was disappointed that he was unable to go through with it.Then, two people came into Dave's life that saved him. His CASA - Court Appointed Special Advocate and his Sensei/Martial Arts Instructor. Their belief in him helped him to change course. All it takes is just one person to believe in us when our internal faith in ourselves is lost. Connection is at the core of our humanity.Dave went on to become a 24-year Air Force Veteran, an author of the book, 'Why Me? My Fight for Life', Life Coach, speaker and at-risk youth mentor/advocate. Dave shines when he talks about the work he is now doing. He is helping parents, mentors, and CASA's truly understand what it is like to be a child growing up with extreme trauma and how to be successful in working with kids who are dealing with this in their lives daily.  To find out more about the programs that Dave runs through his organization Unlimited Potential, go to https://www.upna.net/.Listen in to hear the footprint that Dave wants to leave in the world. Next week, my guest is Martine Cadet, a social media content coach and creator. She is also founder and owner of Kaderique Media, LLC a Boutique Digital Media Agency supporting small business owner's brand themselves online and expand their visibility. She talks about her journey to entrepreneurship and her journey was definitely not a straight line.  There is a moment in this interview that will take your breath away as it did mine. At 17 years old, Jarrett Adams was wrongfully convicted of sexual assault and sentenced to 18 years in a maximum security prison. He served 10 years before being exonerated with the help of the Wisconsin Innocence Project. Adams would then go on to become a lawyer himself, with the goal of helping those who, like himself, had faced discrimination in the legal system.rnrnIn August 2016, Jarrett Adams joined the City Club to share this story. In his new book, "Redeeming Justice: From Defendant to Defender, My Fight for Equity on Both Sides of a Broken System", Adams outlines the racist tactics used to convict young men of color, the unique challenges facing exonerees once released, and how the lack of equal representation in our courts is a failure not only of empathy but of our collective ability to uncover the truth.rnrnWhat are the limits, and possibilities, of our country's system of law? And what can we learn from Jarrett Adams' story to work toward a justice system is truly just for all?rnrnJarrett Adams earned his Juris Doctorate from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in May 2015 and started a public-interest law fellowship with Ann Claire Williams, judge for the Seventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, the same court that reversed his conviction. Jarrett also clerked in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York with the late Honorable Deborah Batts. After working for the Innocence Project in New York, he launched the Law Office of Jarrett Adams, PLLC, in 2017, and now practices in both federal and state courts throughout the country.

Marilyn Peterson Haus' story begins when she was born in 1941 on a farm on the Minnesota Plains. Twins, mental illness, sexism/favoritism, religion, farm life in the 40s and 50s, forgiveness and reconciliation are all topics she meticulously weaves together in this extraordinary memoir. While we touched upon all of that in our interview, what struck me hardest was the struggle she faced with her twin brother. This hit home for me as, like Marilyn, I have a twin brother and our relationship was also strained by favoritism and mental illness, though to a much lesser extent. While her memoir has elements of tragedy, at the end of the day it is a story about a woman who found the courage and strength to break free and live life on her own terms. Paulina Armeria - We are more than our achievements

Paulina Armeria is a mexican born italian taekwondo competitor. Most of her career has been fighting for Mexico until last year when she changed her life one day to another to start living in Italy and competing for that country. As her grandfather was Italian, she has both countries citizenship. She received an academic and sport opportunity so she didn't hesitate to take it.Before traveling the world, you have to learn how to ride a bike.During all of our lives, we have chances to learn and grow up. One of the early lessons that Paulina remembers from her childhood was precisely from her grandfather Remo Vecchi, when he was teaching her how to ride a bike.By the way, Paulina's grandfather was a professional cyclist and biker. He was an Italy cycling national team member and when he moved to Mexico he participated in many competitions, founded a motorcycle factory and then a motor competition team. But that's another story. When she was 4 or 5 years old Paulina's grandfather was teaching her how to ride a bike and in her first attempt she fell off the bike and started to cry. She was expecting her grandfather to comfort her as her knees were bleeding. But it didn't happen. He made her ride again. A few years later she understood that moment as a big lesson, because when you fall you have to try to recover as early as possible. That not only applies to sports but also for life.We are more than our achievements. Her grandfather gave her another lesson without even talking. When he passed away she and her family were moving his stuff and they found pictures and pieces of newspapers, until that moment she realized all the amazing achievements that he made in the past.I've known some amazing people that you never heard them boast about their past feats. Until you hear it from other people. You need to be very humble and self secure to achieve such amazing things and never to talk about it.Paulina remarks that we should be proud of our past but we are not only our achievements. What is the solution to avoid dancing lessons? Taekwondo!Paulina was a sporty girl. She was supposed to start dancing lessons, but she didn't like it. At the same time her school was promoting taekwondo classes. So her first motivation to start in taekwondo was a way to don't take dancing lessons. She fell in love with the sport and she started to attend normal classes. After some time she had to move out of her comfort zone to start training taekwondo in a more competitive environment. One month is nothing in a long athlete career. When she went to her first big tournament she made it to the final but lost on the golden point. A very good result for being her first competition of that level. The preparation time for that competition was too short, only a month, but in her mind she thought she trained a lot. After the competition she said to Mario Labastida, her trainer -That was so sad, to lose after such a long time of effort and training. His answer was simple, he laughed and said to her. -That was not a long time. That was only a month.Mario taught Paulina that the things that are worth take time and that you have to be disciplined to reach your goals.Going to an upper weight class to winPaulina struggled to make Mexico's national team. Her first opportunity came when the national team trainers doing scouting saw her fighting and invited her to train with the team. They saw her talent but she still hasn't won the place there fighting in a tournament. She was happy to be in the team but she wanted to be there by winning a national competition. By that time she was 17 and fighting on -53kg. Her mother saw that each tournament was harder and harder to make the weight. She was still growing. After making weight she used to fight lacking energy, different to how she performed in training. With her family and trainer support, she decided to try at -57kg. The results were completely different. She felt much better and won her spot at the national team. That was the way she started to compete internationally. She's been Panamerican Champion, silver medal in the Toronto Pan Am Games and Bronze medal in Taipei 2017 Universiade.Out of the comfort zone againLast year Paulina was looking to an opportunity to study abroad. And she wanted to choose a place where she could also train taekwondo at a high level.Naturally one of her options was Italy, because as she had the citizenship it was always on her mind. She asked Carlo Molfetta, the Italian National Team manager if she could train with the team in case she moved to Italy and help them in some way. In combat sports is always useful to test your athletes against others. The answer of Carlo Molfetta was very favorable. The Italian Federation was not only open to let Paulina train, but also to let her fight for Italy. Obviously she had to compete in italian nationals to win her spot at the national team, but she had the right to do it as she had the citizenship. In December 2019 she won the Italian National Championships, she is preparing for the European Pre Olympic looking to be in Tokyo 2021.My fight, your fightOutside taekwondo Paulina is a very educated person. She speaks three languages. She recommended Ronda Rouses's book My Fight your Fight as it helped her to prepare for Juegos Centroamericanos. She also recommended The Power of Now, a book that is often recommended by athletes I've interviewed.Another interesting recommendation was Man in the Search for Meaning, the classic book by Dr. Viktor Frankl. During the interview I remembered that Frankl has an essay about Sports and Logotherapy, where he states that the main competition for an athlete is against himself not against others. Please enjoy the interview.
