Send us a textJoin us this week as we sit down with the inspiring Lisa Vogel, the visionary behind the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival. At just 19, Lisa's dream of creating a music festival exclusively for women became a reality, drawing thousands in its first year through sheer determination and innovative methods, even before the internet era. She opens up about her personal journey, sharing candid stories of battling alcoholism while nurturing a cultural movement that's left an indelible mark on the landscape of women's music and the vibrant lesbian culture it fostered. As the festival grew, so did its commitment to equality, offering fair pay and opportunities for artists in a predominantly male-driven industry. Lisa reflects on the festival's evolution, touching on the challenges faced, such as resistance from conservative groups, and the lessons learned in creating inclusive spaces. From memorable moments like her mother's surprise attendance to the conclusion of the festival's 40-year run, Lisa's anecdotes paint a heartfelt picture of the legacy she and the festival have left behind. We also pay tribute to Bob Briddick, a cherished figure in Houston's LGBTQIA+ community who recently passed. Through stories from his close friends, we celebrate Bob's impact, from his artistic talents to his dedication to community building, showcasing how his elegance and generosity turned ordinary gatherings into extraordinary events. Bob's legacy lives on through a scholarship fund in his name, ensuring that his passion for making a difference continues to inspire future generations. Ultimately, Bob became a model for how to age in the LGBTQIA+ community; his light showed bigger and brighter each decade.  This episode weaves together the stories of two trailblazers whose contributions highlight the power of community, resilience, and shared history.Queer Voices airs in Houston Texas on 90.1FM KPFT and is heard as a podcast here. This week's episode is the second episode of a 2 part series of Technically Human. Over the next two episodes, I speak with six women/nonbinary/trans individuals about their experiences transitioning into the tech industry after leaving established careers. They share their stories about what led them to decide to leave their established careers and retrain as technologists through the Grace Hopper Coding Academy, a program specifically targeting women/nonbinary/trans individuals who want to learn how to code so that they can pursue careers in the tech industry. We discuss the challenges that women/nonbinary/trans individuals face when pursuing careers in tech. We talk about what tech represents for those who have been historically excluded from it, and their decision to launch their new collective, "Intercode," a platform that seeks to establish a community for Womyn+ in tech to share their stories and forge new connections. Intercode is a collective of voices exploring how the intersection of identity and privilege impacts every facet of the tech industry–including access, culture and the ethics governing the space. Through candid conversation and writing, we work to tackle the ways current DEI efforts can still fall short in fostering inclusive and equitable spaces. The idea for Intercode began with several candid discussions amongst a group of software developers and recent graduates from the Grace Hopper Program, a NY-based bootcamp targeted towards historically underrepresented candidates in the field of engineering. While sharing our perspectives we quickly realized that these discussions were valuable enough to merit a larger audience and began laying the groundwork to create a formal space for us to share these perspectives with the world.

Serena Chang is a Fullstack software engineer and professional dancer in New York City looking to combine both these passions in her next career. Chang was dancing as one of the lead roles in the off-broadway performance, “Then She Fell” and prepared to go on an international tour prior to the performance shutdowns due to Covid. Looking for another creative and technical pathway, she became immersed in coding and the endless creative possibilities it offered to interface with humans. Kelsey Roy is a Software Engineer who is seeking to implement socially conscious practices in the tech sphere. She has held previous roles as a Data Analyst and Operations Manager and as a Project Management Consultant. Kelsey is devoted to a career working for mission-driven organizations with diverse and collaborative environments that make a positive difference in the world. Related to her passion for supporting DEI efforts in tech, she is also interested in the ethics surrounding AI, machine learning, and computing in general. Jazma Foskin is a Fullstack Software Engineer who recently graduated from the Grace Hopper Program at Fullstack Academy. She is an Army Veteran who is passionate about learning, traveling, and growing. Combining technology and creativity has allowed her to work on passion projects that are aiming to push the Black and LGBTQIA+ community forward. As a Black woman, Jazma is continuing to be a representation so that others may see themselves in her and understand they too no matter their starting point can accomplish their goals. Diana Viglucci (they/them) is a full stack developer, community-builder, and lifelong learner. They like writing code that brings people joy, helps them learn something new, or that makes resources more accessible. Diana completed their technical training at the Grace Hopper Program, where they were best known for their Stackathon-winning rat tracker app. Prior to transitioning into tech, they worked in community-based nonprofit programs, supporting individuals and their families as they navigated mental health issues, career changes, and LGBTQ+ identity. A cum laude graduate of Cornell University, Diana finds joy in making art, spending time in nature, and turning off their phone for hours-long stretches. Their work is grounded in person-centered, trauma-informed, and intersectional perspectives - and always will be - because software is for people. Violet Cutler (She/They) is a trans woman living in Philadelphia. She has been an artist and performer for more than a decade. She has also spent that time organizing DIY events in the queer and trans community and really values community building. She spent the last 4 years working in a food coop. She co-organized a successful union campaign when Covid struck. Despite this success, the dangers of the pandemic drove her to look for another way to support herself. In August of 2021, she quit her job and began studying to get into the Grace Hopper Program at Fullstack Academy. She graduated in April 2022 and looks forward to a career in Tech and Game Development. Her priorities moving forward are accessibility of the web and creating spaces in tech for other marginalized identities. Jessica Donig (she/her) is a Fullstack software engineer with a background in social entrepreneurship. Prior to attending Grace Hopper, Jessica co-founded a nonprofit, worked as the first employee of a YC-backed startup, and conducted clinical research at Stanford University.  From the time she entered the startup world in 2015, Jessica wanted to learn to code, but the lack of female representation in the field had made her hesitant to do so. Now that she has completed her coursework, Jessica is passionate about helping other nontraditional engineers—especially women—see themselves in tech.

Hello!! We are back this week with an actual convo with someone else! YAAY! In today's episode, I bring back my 2nd guest that I had on the show last year, Deepa Pulipati,  to talk about empowering South Asian women and strengthening their leadership skills in the workforce.  Deepa brings up some interesting facts she discovered in her research about South Asian women in the US corporate world, things that reflect our South Asian upbringing in a patriarchal society. It's complicated, but she and I have a great talk about the corporate world and how we can be agents of change to create a more harmonious place at work where productivity, creativity, and self-compassion create a bottom line of job satisfaction, better leadership, and a better product.  Plus, she gives two very simple exercises to create more balance between the inner critic we all have and developing the inner champion we need more of.  We had such a great conversation and we are so excited about the South Asian Womyn's Leadership program! Topics discussed in this episode: -People tend to lump South Asian and SE Asian womyn together, but there are some unique differences between the 2 groups -Deepa and Sharmila are working together in the South Asian Womyn's Leadership Series, a bespoke 5-week program to provide South Asian (here on out S.A.) womyn with tools for advancement, build confidence, and learn how to share their stories amongst other important tools just to name a show -How do South Asian womyn advance in the workplace -Deepa observed her South Asian womyn clients and South Asian womyn associates that worked in felt like they didn't had a clear path to "get ahead" and a lack of representation of South Asian womyn mentors, or South Asian womyn in a leadership role -Deepa personally knows many South Asian womyn that are successful in South Asia and in America -There are very few studies and articles about South Asian womyn in the workplace in the United States       --why is this? -A study showed that womyn are not confrontational nor do they take risks at work -American corporate culture needs to change. We need to think differently and revamp the corporate structure -Solutions offered for clients in the SA Womyn's Leadership series, create community, i.e. "your ideal day" exercise, taking inventory throughout your day, focusing on all the tasks you did -What 3 things do you appreciate about yourself exercise Resources mentioned:  South Asian Womyn's Leadership series deepa@tulacoach.com for more info www.nytimes.com/2019/03/21/business/indra-nooyi-corner-office-pepsi.html   Asian Amerian & Pacific Islanders stopaapihate.org About the guest: Deepa Pulipati is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. Amantha was a guest with us in the first year of MotherHouse and it is so exciting to have her join us to celebrate her wonderful new book, Way of the Seabhean with co-writer Orla O'Conneell! The book has just been published by Womancraft Publishing in February 2021.“The seabhean (pronounced sha-van) is the Irish female shaman, healer and seer, the woman who walks between the worlds. What if we didn’t have to look to other traditions for our spiritual practice? What if we could connect to the roots of our own ancestors’ rituals?"Way of the Seabhean brings Amantha's Goddess storytelling, rich experiences, and powerful Shamanic practices to a greater audience. Her Wheel of the Year introduces us to some lesser-known Goddesses, as well as more familiar; Medb, Brigid, Áine , the Cailleach, Tailtiú, Boann, Macha, and Tlachtga.Amantha shares some of her personal story and how she came to the Goddess through the land itself in Ireland as a child with the guidance of her Grandmother. On this special holiday edition of the Global Research News Hour, we salute the 44th annual Earth Day with a speech given in Winnipeg recently by outspoken anti-globalization author, environmental activist, and eco-feminist Dr. Vandana Shiva.Born in Dehradun India in the foothills of the Himalaya, Shiva got her training at the University of Western Ontario in Canada as a physicist. In 1982, she shifted her focus to inter-disciplinary research in science, technology and environmental policy and moved back to India. Dr. Shiva is the founder of Navdanya, a participatory research initiative dedicated to the preservation of native crop species, the rejuvenation of indigenous culture and knowledge, and to support and direction for environmental activism. She is the author of more than 20 books including Soil Not Oil: Environmental Justice in an Age of Climate Crisis; Stolen Harvest: The Hijacking of the Global Food Supply; Earth Democracy: Justice, Sustainability, and Peace; and Staying Alive: Women, Ecology, and Development. She is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades including the 1993 Right Livelihood Award (Alternative Nobel Prize) and the 2010 Sydney Peace Prize. On March 29, 2014, Dr. Shiva spoke at the North Centennial Community Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada at the invitation of a local collective known as Power House Producers in association with the Women's and Gender Studies Students Association, and the University of Winnipeg's Womyn's Centre. Her speech followed a so-called Feast of forgotten foods which highlighted a meal prepared by local activists with organic ingredients all provided by local farmers for an audience of about a hundred people. Preceding the talk was an announcement about a Bill moving through the Canadian House of Commons known as Bill C-18, the Agricultural Growth Act which critics argue undermines traditional farm practices by ensuring the intellectual property rights over new varieties of seeds to the plant breeders that generate them and force farmers to pay a royalty to them when crops from those seeds go to market.
