The Narrow Door is an ecumenical podcast that aims to promote dialogue in the Christian community. Catholic host Sam Oh sits down with a Catholic lay preacher, an evangelical pastor and a non-denominational Bible instructor to explore their differences an
We made it, Door-itos. This is the last parable on the Road to Revelation series
We're still not over the fact that Israel was actually a blessing that was bestowed upon Jacob by God and it means "overcome" and that the proof of Israel is 12 tribes - Jacob had 12 sons who eventually became the 12 tribes and Jesus had 12 disciples who are addressed as "12 tribes" in James 1:1. But is there a third Israel to be created according to the book of Revelation? Bonus: numbers in the Bible and their significance!
Mica is a host, actress, model, vlogger and restaurant-owner who even has a day job and we're still wondering how she found the time to join us on the pod but she did! She swings by to share her born-again moment and ask Instructor Aaron questions about prayer - would it speed up God's answer if I prayed more? Does sin hinder blessings? Does God change His mind? Pray tell!
Host and actress Issa Litton is a curious cat and not only does she want to know about the heaven, earth, sun, moon and stars that are used figuratively in the book of Revelation but she even asks about the sea that passes away in Rv 21:1
Our friend Issa is a host, actress and the Lit behind 1Lit Corp and she wants to know - why do some people think this is the time of the end? The term 'end time' gets thrown around a lot to mean the annihilation of the planet and life as we know it but is that what the Bible is referring to when it says end time/end of the world/end of the age? On this episode, Instructor Aaron gives us an overview of the different eras that were ended and recreated in the Bible, explains how we can know this biblical end time is now and what it means for believers today.
Jerusalem and Babylon are two places that appear from the Old Testament all the way to the book of Revelation in the Bible. We understand that these are actual places where a lot of significant events took place in the past but what are they doing in a book of prophecy for the second coming, especially Babylon when it no longer exists as such? Many claim and fear that a physical war will be the beginning of the end but the Scriptures make it clear that we do not wage war as the world does (Eph 6, 2Cor 10) so it's all a little confusing but that's why we're here. Come on in and let's talk about it!
Big D has been in your ear for 30 years and currently does the mid-day and morning show on 104.3 Capital FM2. He was once Sam's radio boss and Tina's radio partner (who'd make her cry
The girls get a little QT with Instructor Aaron today because, you know, maybe he feels like he just gets grilled about the book of Revelation all the time (which we're sure he doesn't even mind!
It's part 2 of our conversation with journalist and TV host Mariz Umali on the parables of bridegroom, bride, widow and orphan and she has questions!
It's a mouthful because we got lots to talk about on this two-parter with veteran TV journalist and pioneering K-fan Mariz Umali
Our friend Migo joins us again today to talk about the fascinating language of life, death and resurrection that we find in the Bible. Perhaps one of the most puzzling things Jesus ever said was to a disciple who wanted to go away for a bit to bury his dead father - "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead." What does this mean? Is there more than one way to be dead in the eyes of God? (Spoiler alert: yes) Resurrection is a pillar of the Christian faith. What is the first resurrection that we find in Rv 20? Talk about an Easter hangover episode
As we roll into Holy Monday, our friend Migo Ybañez sits down with us to talk about how his chase for money led him to a 5-million-peso debt which was really just the beginning of how he was stripped of everything he deemed valuable - a relationship, his car, his laptop, even his phone! We're sure a lot of you have been reflecting on your idols this Lenten season and if not, this episode is sure to help you meditate on the things that we put before God and how the enemy uses these things to distract us from Him. We wish you a meaningful and blessed Holy Week and we'll see you next Monday! ✨
For this third and final installment of our conversation with Justin, we are putting Instructor Aaron on the hot seat! Kind of. Starting with Justin's question last time about the 4 living creatures, we get into the deep spiritual meaning of the physical laws of the Old Testament and also talk about Chairman Lee Man-hee who Shincheonji Church of Jesus claims has received the full understanding of the book of Revelation. It's called RANGE and we're here for it!
Halo, Doo-rito!
Sam will never forget the time she was backstage with Justin for an event - she was excitedly talking to him about her new-found faith and he whipped out his phone to show him that he had been praying for her
We wouldn't think twice to call Tin our DJ and sportscasting idol but we're hitting the brakes once we're in faith and Bible territory. We can see throughout the book that God abhors idols and worshiping them was basically an act of forsaking the one true God. Physical idols in the Old Testament make a transition to spiritual ones in the New Testament and then in the book of Revelation, there is mention of 'food sacrificed to idols' in Rv 2 and an 'image' that is worshiped in Rv 13 - what iz thiiiizzz
Our friend Tin is smart, funny, adorbs and she actually knows and talks professionally about basketball - give the rest of us a chance, girl!
Are you ready for today's parable to rock your wooooorld?
(We noticed that the audio cut off at some point on the first version of this episode and it has been replaced. Thank yew!
Alright Door-itos, this one's gonna be off the scales!
By "we", we mean Instructor Aaron and our guest Jay Aruga - host of The Jay Aruga Show the first Filipino podcast on conservative values - while Sam and Tina sit back and ask questions. Not only that, Jay is also on Unboxing Catholicism with our friend Bernz Caasi and they are currently doing a series on the Scriptures as well and on this episode he shares with us how Catholics view and read the Bible, how the book of Revelation is reflected in the Catholic practice and how the book of Revelation is reflected in the Catholic practice. Of course, it wouldn't be a Road to Revelation convo without going into prophecy, fulfillment, testimony and is the second coming happening now? You know. The usual! Come on in
On our last episode with Nikko, we established that the trumpets that appear in the book of Revelation are actually a parable or figurative language for people and the sound of these trumpets is actually a testimony. But why is the seventh and last one different and important? And are we hearing it today? We also took a couple of side trips on this episode - Are the book of Revelation, Mt 24 and Gn 1 supposed to fit together? ('Cause you'd be right to think that Gn 1 as a creation story doesn't quite add up) And once and for all - who run the world?? (Aside from girls
Nikko Ramos is host of the Call to Arms podcast and editor-at-large of Slam Online. He's joining us today and Sam has zero chill because since their radio days together, Nikko has gotten engaged, married and become a parent all during the pandemic (while Sam has had none of the above happen to her). What better way to reunite than over a conversation about the book of Revelation, second coming and parables?
The seal is one of them parables that are understood in different ways and we're here for it! And it's an important one because there is a specific number of people - 144,000 - that the book of Revelation says is sealed. We can say that this is a literal number because there is a great multitude that follows (this all goes down in Rv 7, fyi) and without it being an exact number, we wouldn't know where the count for the great multitude begins. So what exactly is a seal and what does it mean to be sealed? This is for you, curious Door-ito - signed, sealed, delivered!
We didn't really set out to answer that question when we hit record but you know what they say: when life gives you lemons, bust out the tequila! This is us busting out the tequila. Other questions that we didn't set out to answer but turns out are really important and interesting as we move forward in this series - Has the new covenant fulfilled and when? Are traditions bad? We want to thank our friend Bernz for joining us on this conversation, we missed him as much as you did!
Alright Door-itos, we're legit back on the Road to Revelation! Ever notice how mountains are poppin' in the Bible? The Garden of Eden is called the holy mount of God (Ez 28:13-14), Noah's ark came to rest on Mt. Ararat, Abraham bound his son Isaac in Mt. Moriah, the Ten Commandments were given to Moses in Mt. Sinai, Jesus was transfigured on a mountain. These may be physical mountains but what is its spiritual meaning when used in prophecy? In Mt 24 where Jesus gives instructions for the second coming, he said to flee to the mountains when we see the abomination standing in the holy place. And sure enough, we see Mt. Zion in Rv 14 and Heb 12:22-23 says that Mt. Zion is a church. Interestiiiiiiiing. Shouts to our favorite dwedgie RikiFlo for joining us on this convo and the durian for its pungent cameo which singed off all of Sam's nose hairs on this recording. Thanks for the warm welcome back, Door-itos!
Hey Door-itos, it's been a minute. Just kidding, it's been 2 months!
We are so tickled that our last episode for 2021 is number 143 ❤️ We're talking about the parables of flesh and blood in the Bible which we are to eat and who better to have this convo with than a restaurateur?
The beast in Revelation is possibly one of the scariest and most infamous imageries we find in the book. But actuallyyy, there are many other animals that appear throughout the Bible. The people of God are called sheep, Jesus is called the Lamb, what is sacred is not to be given to dogs and pearls are not to be given to pigs, there is a serpent in the Garden of Eden. What do these animals symbolize? Of course, the beast in Revelation is not your average farm animal - it has 7 heads, 10 horns and a tail. Could each part be pertaining to something? How amoosing!
This may seem like a random cluster of parables but trust that there is a method to the madness! Not only were some of the OG disciples literal fishermen but in Matthew 4:19, Jesus told them to follow him and he will make them fishers of men. In Matthew 13, we see the Parable of the Net where the kingdom of heaven is likened to fishermen who catch all kinds of fish with a net that is let down into the sea - the good fish are put into the basket and the bad fish are thrown back into the sea. And then in Revelation 18, there is mention of sea captains, those who travel by ship, sailors and all who earn their living from the sea that weep and mourn. Is this a coincidental web (net?
Hey Door-itos, please flow on in for today's parables
Our friend RikiFlo is the mother of three children and three podcasts, she's a very busy bee! So we are delighted that she made time for us to talk about the parables of blind, deaf and clothes that appear in the book of Revelation (Rv 3:17-18). You know who else was a busy bee? Jesus. On top of preaching the gospel, he performed many miracles of feeding thousands, healing the sick and raising the dead. In John 9, Jesus heals a man born blind but the story takes a turn for the spiritual when Jesus says, "For judgement I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind." And in Matthew 13, Jesus said of the people who rejected his testimony that if they would just open their eyes and ears and turn, he would heal them. And so while these physical conditions were real concerns at the time, it seems like Jesus used them and their healing to convey something infinitely more important - the spiritual arrogance that shuts our eyes and ears to the truth. This truth is also what washes our clothes which seems to be the condition in order for us to enter the kingdom of Heaven (Rv 22:14) so open-open and gising-gising, gaiz!
It's YouTube phenom Mikey Bustos in the haaauz! Shortly before the pandemic, Mikey had a funny feeling that something was about to go down in the world and he is adding a bunker into the dream farmhouse that he is currently building. Another thing you might have not known about our good friend - he grew up in the Catholic educational system and has read the entire Bible. The whole thing. Summarized every book. So what does he think about the parables of light and darkness? Because Jesus said that as long as he is in the world he is the light of the world but that darkness will come when he leaves. And what of this concept of the Bible being sealed at a certain time (Is 29:9-13) and then opened at an appointed time (Ez 1-3) which we also see in the Book of Revelation (Rv 5, Rv 10)? 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6 says that Jesus will come like a thief in the night for those in the darkness but if we are sons of the light and sons of the day, this day will not surprise us like a thief. We just wanna be Team Light as in enlightened, illuminated, be in the know! You know?! ✨
Today's episode is
Welcome to Parable City. Population: Door-itos
As early as now, we can already tell you that the key to understanding the parables is knowing their physical characteristics. Food is what sustains us. It's seasonal and there's good and bad food. Yeast is a living thing that changes the structure of the dough that it is added to. Given these characteristics, what is their spiritual meaning? The parable of food is extra fascinating because it seems to show up through all the eras of the Bible to this day. Also on today's episode - our comfort foods! And here's a little something to keep in theme and chase away the Monday blues - What's the difference between pizza and Jesus? Jesus can't be topped MUHAHAHAHA luvyew
Are you ready for them para-para-parables?! (High five if you sang that line) To the shock of no full-fledged Door-ito, we are starting with the seed and with good reason - in Mark 4, Jesus was adamant that we realize its meaning saying, "Don't you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable?" And sure enough, it seems to be the key to unlocking everything else in Matthew 13:31-32 where the Kingdom of Heaven is likened to a tree where a bird comes to perch. And while it's cool that we are able to grasp the meaning of these elements in an academic manner, the more important question seems to be - how do these things all come together and what is God telling us about the Kingdom of Heaven that He will establish here on earth? You know. The usual Thursday morning questions one mulls over ☕️
So there's the moral-lesson parables (shouts, Good Samaritan
Hebrews 5:12-14 makes a distinction between an infant believer and mature believer and interestingly, being one of the two has to do with the ability to distinguish the teaching that is coming from God and the teaching that is coming from the enemy or -- good and evil. Things get really complicated because the enemy knows the scriptures better than most and his work is to deceive, sow doubt and distort the Word that God has given to us resulting in confusion and division. How do we make sure not to fall for this trickery? That is one of the burning questions to be answered on this episode along with what is the quirkiest thing about Bernz's mom and what is Insta Harry and Tina's fave Zumba move? It's a hard-hitting one today, Door-itos!
Halo! Totally didn't plan this but we love it when the stars align - we're talking about Heaven on All Saints' Day
I think we all know without question by now that God's heart for us is "lavish l♥️ve" as Brother JPaul so often puts it
It's what makes us Christian - recognizing and accepting Jesus as the promised Messiah when he came 2000-ish years ago. The first coming is something that we are all familiar with but on this episode, we take a slightly different but infinitely fascinating look at what Jesus did while he was here by breaking down God's promises in Jer 31. In verse 22, He promised to start a new thing with a woman surrounding a man as fulfilled by Jesus being born of a virgin. In verse 27, He promised that there will be a sowing of two kinds of seed as we see fulfilled in Mt 13:24-30. And in verse 31, the new covenant is promised which Jesus made at the night of Passover. You know, the Last Supper scene you saw everyday in the dining room next to the giant spoon and fork. And then your Tita Bhaby enters asking what's for lunch and you point with your lips to the sweet-style spaghetti with the red hotdog. Shouts
Insta Abi once said that sometimes, when she teaches about the covenants, she gets tired of repeating how the chosen people kept breaking the covenant again and again and it makes her reflect on the heart of God. And I think I get it. WHY ARE WE LIKE THIS
How does Moses style his hair? With a parting HAHAHAHA. Sorry. Hope you Door-itos had a restful weekend 'cause we're hitting the ground running today with the epic period of Joseph to Moses (legends!). There is no way we could possibly do justice to this super eventful and colorful era with an hour-long convo but the point is this: God made promises to Abraham that he didn't live long enough to see fulfilled but God, being the faithful and promise-keeping God that He is, fulfilled them through Moses. The Israelites though were a different story - they were whiny and unbelieving despite all of God's amaaaazing provisions through the desert and ended up roaming for 40 years when the trip to Canaan should've taken them a couple of weeks! Another thing worthy of note is the pattern of creation and recreation that is emerging in the salvation plan of God. And then there's Moses, faithful and humble Moses, who saw the Promised Land from afar but couldn't enter. How come?
So it seems like the best joke I could find about Abraham is "Who was the smartest man in the Bible? Abraham. Because he knew a Lot" and I feel like he deserves so much better because out of everyone that's been given a covenant so far, Abraham is the only one who was able to keep it! I mean, fine, he didn't live long enough to see the fulfillment of all of God's promises to him and well, yes, there was that one incident with Hagar that was weird but he's the father of faith darn it so please. Send your best Abraham jokes my way. Other than that, it's quite the story time on today's episode which is why we have popcorn! We also talk about the kimchi that Bernz's mom made for us. We're not a food show, promise. Back to our man Abe, he knew exactly what God's promises were which is why he was able to hold on to them until the end so we hereby pronounce him as the patron saint of blind faith ✨
1 Cor 10:11 tells us that the history that we see in the Bible serves as examples and warnings for us and boy oh boy does the story of Noah have them in spades! After the sin of Adam and Eve, God chose Noah and had him preach for a hundred years for the people to repent. Noah also warned everyone about the flood that was coming but no one listened to him and in the end, only Noah and his fam for a grand total of 8 people were saved. There's a popular notion that Old Testament God is a grumpy old man but on this episode, we get a glimpse of God's heart for all men to be saved and of His patience as He waits for our repentance. Why are we so stubborn and hard of heart? And after going through one deluge of a lesson, did Noah and his family keep the new covenant that was given to them? Well. Let's just say that what happened next didn't float God's boat
Greetings and salutations, Door-itos!
It's a special episode for no reason whatsoever!
On Part 1, we talked about the Bible being the history book of God and His chosen people + how its contents can be categorized into history, moral teaching, prophecy and fulfillment. Today, it's about how the Bible is a book of covenant. Did you even know that 'testament' is synonymous to 'covenant' which is synonymous to 'promise'? Me neither.
