Gamboa recuerda a Fidel.

Today's episode features a roundtable discussion on Research Impact. Caroline Goldsmith, Associate Director, Charleston Hub, talks with Rachel Borchardt, Scholarly Communication Librarian and University Library Faculty, American University; Andrea Hebert, Research Impact Librarian, Louisiana State University; and Camille Gamboa, AVP, Corporate Communications, Sage. This conversation features both the librarian perspective and the publisher perspective of how each defines and supports research impact at their institutions, how the conversation has expanded over the years, and why forward thinking is crucial to meet the challenges such as academic silos, the dominance of traditional metrics, and the lack of commitment from U.S. universities to initiatives like DORA, and to support more effective impact of research. Librarians have an important role in shaping these conversations and helping institutions move beyond traditional metrics. We also discuss Policy Maps, which is a free tool offered by Sage for individual researchers to determine their policy impact. Marco was born in Chicago but has also lived in Mexico City and San Antonio. He holds two bachelor's degrees in English and Psychology, as well as a Master of Jurisprudence. With 15 years of experience in the corporate sector, his roles have spanned product management, operations, governance, and call center positions. In 2011, after the birth of his first daughter, Marco began to feel ill. For nine years, he was told it was anxiety, but nothing seemed to help. It wasn't until 2020 that he was finally diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. From 2011 to 2022, Marco struggled with agoraphobia, but with the help of medication, therapy, and supportive friends, he was able to overcome these limitations. During his time at home, Marco began writing a collection of fictional short stories. Originally, he intended to gift the stories to his daughters, the youngest of whom was born in 2013. However, after sharing the stories with friends, he was encouraged to consider publishing them. In 2023, the stories were published as a novel titled Within Normal Limits. Shortly after its release, the novel became an Amazon Best Seller in the Multiple Sclerosis category. The novel follows a fictional version of Marco as he navigates struggles with religion, relationships, fatherhood, and connecting with others who are also dealing with their own solitude. After the publication, Marco began doing readings. Though the book is quite sad, Marco (the author) is not, which led to the readings evolving into comedy routines. This eventually opened the door for Marco to participate in stand-up comedy around town. Book Synopsis: This gripping collection of stories tells the story of Marco, a young man diagnosed with multiple sclerosis who must confront the harsh reality of his prognosis. Set against the backdrop of a life being slowly taken away from him, the reader is taken on a journey of strength, courage, and resilience as Marco learns to appreciate the beauty of life. With his relationships pushed to the limit, Marco must find the courage to face his illness and discover the weight of hope. https://www.wnlmarco.com https://www.instagram.com/wnlmarco https://a.co/d/8ITF5BA (Amazon link to purchase, although folks can get it through Target, Barnes and Noble, and a ton of other online retailers).

Round 1: Ricochet Shot! During a campaign event for U.S. Senate candidate Lucas Kunce, a bullet fragment from his AR-15 ricocheted and struck a reporter, KSHB-TV's Ryan Gamboa, in the arm. Kunce, a Democrat and former Marine, quickly administered first aid. Despite the incident, Gamboa continued reporting. The event, just two weeks before Election Day, provided some unintended publicity for Kunce as he faces a tough race against Republican Sen. Josh Hawley. Round 2: Horror in the Barracks A Fort Cavazos sergeant, Sgt. Greville Clarke, faces shocking allegations of breaking into barracks rooms and attacking female soldiers, including attempted rape, robbery, and even attempted murder. Clarke's actions have horrified the military community, and his trial is set for December. The case sheds light on alarming conditions within the barracks and the military's handling of such severe incidents. Round 3: Bad Judgment In an unusual rescue, a woman in New South Wales, Australia, got stuck between boulders for seven hours after slipping into a crevice while trying to retrieve her phone. After a lengthy, complicated rescue operation involving multiple agencies, she was safely freed with only minor injuries. However, her phone was not recovered. You can find every episode of this show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or YouTube. Prime Members can listen ad-free on Amazon Music. //The Wire//2200Z October 23, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: TERROR ATTACK STRIKES TURKEY. JOURNALIST WOUNDED AT CAMPAIGN EVENT IN MISSOURI.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Turkey: A terror attack was conducted this morning at the Turkish Aerospace Industries complex in Ankara. Multiple gunmen assaulted the industrial facility this morning with small arms and hand grenades. Early this morning, it was reported that hostages had been taken by the assailants, who were holding employees of the facility for unknown purposes. So far 5x fatalities have been reported, along with around a dozen wounded. AC: This attack was likely planned to coincide with President Erdoğan's arrival in Russia for the BRICS summit, which occurred just a few hours before the attack began. Most Turkish media is blaming the attack on PKK militants, which is likely considering the long-standing historical conflict between Turkey and the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq.Of note, immediately after the attack, most social media was cut throughout Turkey. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, TikTok, and YouTube were all immediately restricted, probably to prevent footage of the attacks from circulating. This is yet another reminder that in some nations, censorship is the knee-jerk reaction to any major event. This further complicates the situation, and prevents citizens from knowing if the threats are isolated, or part of a more coordinated attack. This is a very important consideration to remember, as a citizenry might only get notification of a single event occurring…because follow-on attacks will likely take place under a blanket of censorship. For now, this attack appears to be an isolated event in Turkey, though time will tell if other attacks take place in the near future.-HomeFront-United States: Boeing continues to experience setbacks in the form of equipment failure in space. Boeing's IS-33e communications satellite catastrophically exploded a few days ago. The US Space Force is tracking the debris field, which largely consists of approximately twenty pieces of debris. No word has been provided yet regarding what caused the satellite to explode in orbit. AC: Satellite failures are more common than one might think, however one exploding in orbit is quite rare. As with most critical infrastructure failures within the United States, discerning whether an incident was the result of incompetence or malice remains challenging. While most will be quick to assign blame to Boeing with regards to Boeing's long history of shoddy workmanship, one would do well to remember that a new form of ‘space race' has been underway for years, with most major power-players around the world attempting to develop weapons for use in targeting adversarial satellites. So far, no indications are present that this explosion might have been the result of a hostile act, however an investigation into this incident will surely examine this possibility.Missouri: The Democratic candidate running for Senate, Lucas Kunce, accidentally shot a local journalist during a campaign event. KSHB-TV journalist Ryan Gamboa was hit in the arm (suffering non-life-threatening injuries) via what was likely spalling and/or a ricochet from the targets used during a “range day” campaign event. As inadequate medical care was provided for the wounded journalist at the scene, Gamboa was transported to a local hospital for actual care.AC: The observations regarding this event are numerous and vivid. Though the incalculable safety violations at this event make determining a cause for this incident challenging, this casualty was almost certainly caused due to the event participants engaging steel targets with rifles at very close distance. Steel targets are only used at considerable range with rifles, as the risk of ricochet and/or spalling is too great at close range.Somewhat ironically, a bystander receiving

Cristina Gamboa is CEO of the World Green Building Council, an influential local-regional-global network focused on “the transformation to sustainable and decarbonized built environments for everyone, everywhere.” She is an economist with a background in sustainability, policy, and multi-stakeholder partnerships; as such, she is a trusted convener in international settings such as UN Climate Change summits and the World Economic Forum. Cristina is from Colombia and lives in London. Before she came to this work, she was an academic economist with a focus on international affairs and a passion for communicating. “Collectively, we've had a huge win, getting buildings on the global climate agenda. But with visibility comes responsibility,” Cristina says. “Now we have to make sure that the private sector is empowered to deliver progress.” She says that the finance community understands that buildings are the largest global asset class, and this is an opportunity. “If we get this right, they can invest in better assets,” she says. “If we work with the finance community and we find ways to delink emissions from growth and, for example, make sure that the retrofit economy really lifts off, we could unlock the benefits of a carbon-free and circular economy.”Great strides have been made, she says, but there is work to do: “We still don't have aggregated data to show change at scale. This is a gap that makes our movement vulnerable. The sooner we can quantify benefits, the better.”
